John F. Thurston - October 02, 1939 - November 02, 2023

Departed: 11/02/2023 (Millis)
Obituary Preview: John Franklin Thurston, who proudly served the town of Millis as a firefighter, police officer and emergency medical technician, died peacefully on November 2 after a long illness. He was 84. He is survived by his children, Scott, Karen (Caragliano) and David, and six grandchildren: Joshua, Tyler, Anthony, Kyle, Matthew and Kathryn. He is also survived by his sister, Penny, and his former wife, Thora.
John was born in Lynn, Mass., and was the son of Franklin and Amy. He graduated from Westwood High School, where he excelled in tennis, and attended the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts. John was a master carpenter (he could do anything with his hands) and also owned Coventry Landscaping, embracing his love of horticulture and the outdoors.
He was always there to help people in need and found his true calling in his many years with the fire department, in which he made lifelong friends. He was so dedicated to answering the call that on one occasion when the scanner rang, he rode his son’s 10-speed bike (not waiting to hear that the brakes were broken) to the station, skidding across Route 109.
John was always an early riser and looked forward to meeting the guys each morning for breakfast at Bob’s. He loved spending time in Lake Winnipesaukee and enjoyed a good game of cards, telling stories, watching NASCAR and playing softball on the Millis Police team. An avid Boston sports fan, John was a longtime Bruins season ticket-holder, and in his final days, he would perk up long enough to complain about Bill Belichick, or the Red Sox.
John often said many of his happiest years were spent at Magnolia in Franklin, where he made a new group of friends and enjoyed his later retirement years. He will be missed.
Visiting hours will take place at Roberts Mitchell Caruso Funeral Home, 90 Curve St., Millis, on Wednesday, Nov. 8 from 11-1, followed by a graveside service at Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Departed: 10/08/2023 (Millis)
Obituary Preview: Age 85, passed away suddenly, on October 8, 2023, under a beautiful blue sky at her residence, in the company of her daughter. Beloved wife of the late Gennaro J. Dorato, daughter of Gerard Casey and Martha Casey (Gleason), she was preceded in death by a son, Thomas, just days old. She was also predeceased by her brother, Gerard Casey, and her sister Patricia Messina (Casey), with whom she grew up in the Jeffries Point area of East Boston. She leaves two younger beloved sisters, Eleanor Casey, of Lynn, and Helen Penczek (Casey), of Escondido, CA. Jackie leaves her son, Stephen G. Dorato and his wife, Valerie Dorato, and her daughter, Judith Josephine Dorato O’Gara and her husband, David O’Gara, as well as two grandchildren, Emily Edith O’Gara, and Ethan Thomas O’Gara.
Jackie graduated from East Boston High School in 1956. After starting their family, she and Jerry moved to Revere following his MS diagnosis. Jackie raised her children in Beachmont while taking care of Jerry full-time, showing great strength while her family was displaced by storm-related flooding, most notably during the Blizzard of ’78. She worked in the cafeteria of Massachusetts General Hospital prior to his passing in 1982, and subsequently worked as a general cashier for the Marriott Long Wharf for 25 years until her retirement.
Jackie loved to dance, learning different ballroom dances as a teen at her local church. She and Jerry shared a passion for ballroom dance before his illness, and later, she and friends would frequent Wonderland Ballroom in Revere, among a few other dance halls. Living room dancing was common at her home on Dolphin Ave., and her sister Eleanor remembers Jackie teaching her the cha-cha at the age of three.
Jackie felt at home near the ocean, often reminiscing about boating to Boston’s Harbor Islands as a teen with friends who were members of the Jeffries Point Yacht Club. She liked a good game of cribbage, a cold glass of beer, her cats, and taking care of her plants and small garden. As she got older, she enjoyed travel with friends, visiting the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Spain, Portugal, France, California, to see her sister, Virginia, to visit her uncle Leonard, and to England, with her beloved late sister-in-law, Anna. Jackie had a direct manner, with an acerbic wit and sometimes salty tongue, but her love was wholehearted, unwavering, and loyal. If she loved you, she loved and cared for you, even if you weren’t on speaking terms. She’d stress that everyone was a human being, with frailties and imperfections, but worthy of love just the same. If you told her she looked great, she’d promise to pay you later, adding, “It’s the lipstick."
Jackie herself was loved deeply, and she will be missed.
