Shirley Mae Lange - August 26, 1953 - April 16, 2024

Departed: 04/16/2024 (Bellville)
Obituary Preview: Livestream at: Miller Josey Mortuary LLC Facebook.com
Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Shirley Kelley Lange, died on April 16, 2024. She was 70 years old.
Shirley was born to the late L.W. and Annie Williams Kelley in Brookshire, Texas on August 26, 1953. She was the sixth of 13 children to bless this union. She was a perfect combination of her mother’s beauty and her father’s gentle spirit.
Affectionately known as “Big Red” to her family and friends, Shirley had a quiet personality, but had a hilarious sense of humor around those who knew her well. She often recalled the shenanigans that she and her siblings got into as kids. She frequently mentioned the admiration of how her parents raised her and the pride she took in family.
As she became a young woman, she shied away from attention. Like her parents, she became a shining example of love, beauty, devotion, and faithfulness.
She attended Clemons School in Pattison, TX and Royal High School in Brookshire, Texas. She displayed her creative talent in art class showing natural ability to draw and paint.
She also sang in the high school choir. After she completed her formal education, she extended her caretaker role into a career. Shirley worked as a nanny for families in the community. She also worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at the Brookshire Nursing Home for more than 15 years.
She accepted Christ as a teenager and joined Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Brookshire. She had fond memories of Vacation Bible School, the Mt. Zion Lively Hope Association and going to church revivals. Shirley attended a ‘camp meeting’ held in Brookshire and became immersed in her faith. She met Sister Evie Johnson, who had a profound impact on her spiritual journey.
Shirley and her sisters Lena, Frances and Rose joined church in Sealy, Texas where she made lifelong friends. Even after relocating to Chula Vista, California, Shirley continued to faithfully tithe to her hometown church (Zion Hill Baptist Church) and worshipped via online service. Recently she met another prayer warrior, Sister Demetria Wallace, who leads daily prayers for her family.
Shirley was the heartbeat of her home and family. She united in marriage with Edward Lange and this union was blessed with two children, son Dunshae and daughter Ciji.
She poured her heart and soul into being the best mother possible and instilled in them the same small-town upbringing and values that she had. She kept her children close to their extended family and taught them respect, gave them discipline, and loved them unconditionally. She fully supported all of their endeavors and was their number one fan.
During her lifetime, she was ‘like a mom’ to nieces, nephews, and bonus family whom she loved dearly. Her motherly love knew no bounds. She balanced no-nonsense discipline with tender, loving care. ‘Aunt’ Shirley raised family members as her own at times: Chasene, Romeka, Lil’ Robert, Chinquetti (KeKe), and Brandon.
Countless afternoons, summers and weekends were filled with many children including Toyja, Tartarian, Omar, Yomuni and Tynettra who happily piled into her house, playing, watching TV, eating, and sleeping alongside her own two children. Thoughts of those days bring smiles to our faces even now.
Lasting memories were also created during summertime visits with a special niece, Toy, at Willow Springs. Shirley looked forward to catching up with Robert, Desjone’ and Kaiden whenever she had the chance. She enjoyed road trips to Dallas to spend time with Chasene, DeWayne and Danyale. She cherished time spent with Demetri who loved spoiling her. Shirley also treasured being Godmother to Tishanna Hollins.
She encouraged all to do their best in everything and supported each of them in their school, extracurricular and church activities. She first answered to ‘Maw Maw’ while raising her great-niece Arieana, whom she cherished as a daughter.
‘Grandmother’ was the next badge of honor Shirley wore proudly. When her first grandchild, Chloe Elon, was born, her love and devotion to her family deepened even more.
Shirley made an unexpected, life changing decision to move from Texas to California when her second grandchild and only grandson, Austin Kai was born. The distance was unfamiliar to her, but she kept family ties strong through daily phone calls, face-time video calls, texts, and cards. The youngest grandchild, Caylee Elise blessed her life approximately six months after Austin.
She became a bi-coastal, full-time grandma and recently gained a bonus granddaughter, Cam and loved every minute of it. Her grandchildren became her pride and joy. She delighted in her role as ‘Maw Maw’ to them; absolutely loving each of her ‘babies’ and quietly spoiling them with endless hugs, special gifts, and individualized attention. Each of her grandchildren had a close and special bond with her.
Shirley had a true love for her family and was the glue that held the family together. She was everything to everyone and was there for everyone in her own special way.
Shirley, Frances, Rose, and Lena shared a passion for the Houston Astros; she made sure everyone knew what time the games started and even sent updates on the games. While the Houston Texans was her favorite team, she would often joke with her brothers about their teams winning and losing.
In her younger days, she played first base on a local softball team. Shirley even helped to coach her children’s t-ball and baseball teams, cheering them on from the stands or from the baseline. Those past memories always brought a big smile to her face.
She was a good cook too. As a holiday tradition, she would prepare cornbread dressing and ship it to her nephew and great-nephew Toyja and Toyja, Jr. as well as others who made special requests. Billy, Diane, Billy II, and Curtis would bring over Miguel’s cheese and brighten her day.
What she loved most was spending time with those she loved, talking, joking, watching a good movie, or sharing a delicious meal. Her soft-spoken easy-going personality will be missed the most.
While living in California, she welcomed new friends into her family circle. Shirley enjoyed spending time with her extended San Diego family who loved her dearly: Linford and Denise Schultz and family, Michelle Davis, Tanya Johnson, and La Toya Curry just to name a few.
Her life’s legacy focused on family, faith, and friends. She was central to so many funny, happy, and beautiful memories. The impact on the lives she touched, and the tremendous loss of her passing will never be forgotten.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, L.W. and Annie Williams Kelley; daughter, Elon Kelley Lange; brothers, Matthew Kelley, Curtis Kelley, and Bobby Kelley; one sister, Lena Kelley, niece, Chinquetti Kelley, and nephews; Robert Kelley II and Curtis Kelley.
Shirley leaves to cherish her loving memories: her son, Dunshae Lange, daughter-in-law, Regeorgia, and grandson, Austin of Chula Vista, California; daughter, Ciji Lange and son-in-law, Thomas Wells, and granddaughters, Chloe Lange, Caylee Coleman and Cam Wells of Omaha, Nebraska; brothers, Robert Kelley, Sr. (Ezella) of Katy, Texas, Billy Kelley, Sr. (Diane) of Chula Vista, California, Earnest Kelley (Edith), and Freddy Kelley of Brookshire, Texas; sisters, Birtha Thompson of Lancaster, Texas, Mae Frances Kelley of Katy, Texas, Rose Kelley of Houston, Texas and Kathy Lewis (Paul) of Pearland, Texas. She leaves a host of adoring nieces and nephews; cousins and extended family; special ‘sister’ Carylon Lange; special friends include Ella Louise Banks, Marian Collins, Essie Eason, Mary Harris, Ollie Doris Josey, Lisa Legan, Renell Stewart, Rosemary Wigfall, and Evelyn Williams.
Her legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. Shirley Mae Lange will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her family, friends, and community. May she rest in eternal peace.

Finus O Tyler - April 11, 1921 - April 02, 2024

Departed: 04/02/2024 (Bellville)
Obituary Preview: In Lieu of Flowers Please Donate To: Meals on Wheels 915 Frydek Road Sealy, Texas  77474
Mr. F.O. Tyler started this epic journey to the age of 100 in Nacogdoches County on April 11, 1921. He was the eldest child of Mr. Benton and Mrs. Pearl Tyler. He later was joined by two brothers and two sisters. One thing that a farm family is very familiar with is hard work and, as the oldest child; Mr. Tyler carried a large portion of the workload. This work often interfered with his thirst for knowledge and education.
Mr. Tyler escaped the farm life by joining the U.S. Army serving with distinction from 1941-1945 in World War II in the 1317th Engineer General Service Regiment making sure that the front line troops were properly supplied with all that they needed to be successful in their military campaign. After his honorable discharge from the US Army, he decided not to return to the harsh farm life but instead enrolled in Prairie View A&M College at the time to pursue his quest for a different life than that of a farmer. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree and later earned a Master’s Degree from Prairie View A & M University as well.
It was not all work and no play for Mr. Tyler and, while enjoying his studies in college, he also met and married his first love, Esther Johnson. They were blessed with three biological children, Theadra Cookie Tyler Curry (Sealy), Yvette Mari Tyler (Ft. Worth, TX), and David Ronald Tyler (Grand Prairie, TX). From that union with Esther Tyler, Mr. Tyler was blessed with 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. After Esther Tyler tragically passed away, Mr. Tyler later married L. E. Sadler and added an addition 3 step-children to his growing family. After L.E. Tyler passed away, he married Jo Evelyn Owens, who he is happily married to today, and added an additional 4 step-children to his family.
After graduating Mr. Tyler moved his family to Bellville, TX and took a job as the first Black Austin County Extension Agent. During his two-year tenure there they won the Texas State Swine Show with the 4-H Program. He later moved his family to Sealy and was hired as a Coach, Vocational Agriculture Teacher, Bus driver, and Mentor at the Austin County Colored School. This school had a broad base of students which included the colored youth from Wallis, Sealy, and Bellville.
When the schools were integrated, he was one of the first black teachers that was selected to move to Sealy High School as a Vocational Agriculture Teacher. He taught Agriculture for 34 years teaching and mentoring young men for life’s challenges. One of his greatest achievements during his teaching career was sponsoring the NFHA Livestock Show and winning the Texas Leadership Contest.
Mr. Tyler was a very active member of Bethel Baptist Church of Sealy. He served as Superintendent of Sunday School for 55 consecutive years before retiring in 2007. He was the Chairman of the Deacon Board, a position he has held for quite some time as well. In addition to loving teaching, his church, his community, his family and loving all children he had not slowed down much on his activities. He had served in numerous organizations and committees during the 36 years the he has been “retired” from working in the school system. His love and dedication to the city that he now calls home has been evident. Some other accomplishments that he has achieved in his community are: He was the first black man to serve on the Sealy Planning Commission which he served for 25 years
He served on the Sealy Library Board for five years helping to establishing the first city library, later named the Gordon Library.
Mr. Tyler served as a member of the Board of Directors for (RAP) Raising Academic Performance and mentoring junior high and high school children.
Mr. Tyler was one of the first black men chosen to be the Grand Marshall of the Austin County Fair Parade and Livestock Show which he had the pleasure to serve in 2013.
Mr. Tyler was a member of the Eastside Foundation and the Prairie View Alumni Association where he received the Texas Teacher Training Award as well as the Outstanding Teaching Award during his teaching career. Mr. Tyler also served on the first Board and is still an active Board Member of the Helping One Another (HOA) Meals On Wheels Inc. of Austin County.
Mr. Tyler is still serving and giving of his time by helping others and being a beacon light of wisdom for Austin County. Mr. Tyler believes in GOD, education and the love of his family and for all mankind. He never met a stranger and says that he knows that the lives that he has touched has made him be a better complete servant of mankind. He hopes that something that he said or did will enhance the lives of others so that they can the pass the wisdom on from generation to generation. If you passed his house; he would be sitting on the porch looking for you to blow your horn so he could gladly wave at you. Mr. Tyler was only 102 years old but closer to 103. Who know what the future holds? But for Finus Odell Tyler, he has completed his GOD given assignment.

Jose Martinez - December 24, 1973 - January 02, 2024

Departed: 01/02/2024 (Bellville)
Obituary Preview: Jose DeJesus Martinez obituary
On Christmas Eve December 24, 1973, Jose DeJesus Martinez, also known as Chuy, was born in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico.
His mother named Virginia Serrano & Father, Ruben Martinez. He had 2 sisters, Juany Martinez and Betty Guerrero.
He was the first born but was also born prematurely. He spent a month in an incubator along with an injured foot. The doctors had informed his mother that he was too little and fragile, that his life expectancy was no longer than 2 years. Meanwhile, his mother was in and out of the hospital within 2 years expecting a loss. By the grace of God, our beloved Chuy, became 100% healthy at 2 years old and was blessed with 50 years of life.
In 1994, Chuy had moved to Bellville, TX with the rest of his family who had moved there the year prior. Chuy, excited, ready, to start a new life in the small town of Bellville,TX, joined the welding industry with his father. Less than a year later, they received the devastating news that his father had passed at the age of 40. Although he was heartbroken, he knew he had to step up and help out his family.
A few years later, Chuy and his family, were blessed with a man named, Rosario Serrano, changing their lives forever. He married his mother and helped them live the lives they’ve always wanted. He considered Rosario very much as a father figure.
He had a very playful, lighthearted, humorous personality making sure anyone around him was laughing with him. He loved to laugh and make others laugh. He was noble, with a heart of gold. With a deep love for his mother. Never complained one bit when his family and friends asked for a simple favor. Although he didn’t have any kids of his own, He was very much present in the lives of his nieces and nephews. Loving them as if they were his own children.
After 50 years on earth, Chuy was called by God to come home on January 2, 2024. Leaving behind his pride and joy, his pups Susy & Lucy.
Chuy will be missed by many, leaving a mark on the hearts of those that he loved most.
Rest in peace Chuyito.
