Robin B. Frē - May 14, 1953 - May 05, 2024

Departed: 05/05/2024 (Highland)
Obituary Preview: Our friend, Robin B Frē, has died. We remember her in songs she wrote and quilts she made, when the coffee is hot and the pipe full, when the sun’s out and clothing is optional. Her spirit lives on in all that is free. She loved us and we loved her.
Robin came into herself in the 1970s as lesbian and Pagan on the fringes of society in the Catskills. She managed a rooming house and waited tables in Stonington Maine, and traveled extensively. She was once briefly stateless on the Niagara Bridge - neither the US nor Canada would let her in! Robin obtained a degree in Anthropology and wrote for Lynda Herbeck’s Come To Woodstock paper. She sold her quilts at Mowers Flea Market and chatted with anyone and everyone there. Now, after almost 71 years she has fulfilled her chosen name and become free.
We know little of her birth family other than she was predeceased by her parents and a sister. She is survived by stepdaughters Juliana Forbes and Jenifer Butler, caregiver Jen Pouliotte, the singing group Women with Wings of which she was a founding member, Frank Marquit, Dennis Carter, and Andy Donaldson.
A graveside service will take place on Wednesday, May 15th, 11:00am at Trinity Cemetery, Trinity St. in Saugerties, NY.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, the funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template to make it easier for the family.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and any other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for around 150-200 words, but some publications may allow for longer or shorter obituaries.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful for those who read it.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to find out their specific submission guidelines. Some newspapers may accept submissions online, while others may require you to email or fax the information. Be sure to ask about any deadlines, word count limits, and photo requirements.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Yes, there are many online platforms that allow you to publish an obituary. These websites often offer additional features such as guest books, condolences, and photo galleries. You can also share the online obituary on social media or via email to reach a wider audience.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspapers may charge by the word or line, while online platforms may offer free or paid options with varying levels of features. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $500 or more for a traditional newspaper obituary.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. Keep in mind that your family may still need to review and edit the final version before publication.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement that informs readers of someone's passing. It typically includes only basic information such as the person's name, age, and date of death. Death notices are often used when a full obituary is not desired or cannot be published due to time constraints.

What is a funeral notice?

A funeral notice is similar to an obituary but focuses specifically on the funeral or memorial service details. It usually includes information about the date, time, location, and officiant of the service.

How do I announce a death on social media?

When announcing a death on social media, be respectful and considerate of the deceased's family and friends. Use a clear and concise message that includes essential details such as the person's name and dates of birth and death. Avoid sharing sensitive or personal information without permission.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular to inject humor into an obituary as a way to celebrate the person's personality and spirit. Just be sure to keep it tasteful and respectful of the deceased and their loved ones.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary?

If you're having trouble writing an obituary, don't hesitate to ask for help from family members, friends, or even a professional writer. You can also use online templates or examples as inspiration to get started.

Can I update an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, it may be possible to update an obituary after publication. However, this depends on the publication or platform's policies and deadlines. Be prepared to provide corrected information and follow any necessary procedures for making changes.

How long are obituaries kept online?

The duration that an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep them archived indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period (e.g., 30 days). Be sure to check with the specific platform for their archiving policies.

Can I reprint an obituary from another source?

If you want to reprint an obituary from another source (e.g., another newspaper), you'll need to obtain permission from the original publisher or copyright holder. Be respectful of intellectual property rights and follow proper protocols for reproduction.

What if I need help finding information for an obituary?

If you're struggling to gather information for an obituary, try reaching out to family members, friends, or former colleagues who may have insights into the person's life. You can also consult public records, social media profiles, or old photographs for inspiration.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the deceased's values or interests to make it more meaningful.

How do I handle errors in an already-published obituary?

If you discover errors in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately to report the mistake. They will guide you through their correction process and work with you to rectify the issue as quickly as possible.

Can I create a memorial website instead of publishing an obituary?

Yes! Memorial websites are becoming increasingly popular as a way to honor loved ones who have passed away. These sites often include photos, stories, condolences, and other memories that can be shared with friends and family.

What if I'm unsure about what details to include in an obituary?

If you're unsure about what details to include in an obituary, consider consulting with other family members or close friends who knew the deceased well. You can also seek guidance from a funeral home director or bereavement counselor for support during this difficult time.

Can I include charitable donations information in an obituary?

Absolutely! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers in the obituary as a way to honor their loved one's memory and support a good cause.
