Patricia H. Edison - December 11, 1927 - April 15, 2022

Departed: 04/15/2022 (Grand Rapids)
Obituary Preview: Patricia Thornquist Hannagan Edison, age 94, of Grand Rapids passed away on Friday, April 15, 2022, after a short illness. Pat was preceded in death by her husband of fifty years, William (Bill) H. Edison, in 2000.
Born in Grand Rapids, Pat was a nearly lifelong resident and supporter of East Grand Rapids. It was in high school at East that Pat discovered her passion for volunteerism by leading an effort to sell War Bonds during WWII.  At the University of Michigan, Pat majored in English and Journalism and was a member of the Delta Gamma sorority. She graduated in 1949 as a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, the oldest academic honor society in the United States.  Pat was also a member of Phi Kappa Phi, an honor society that recognizes superior scholarship. These prestigious distinctions demonstrated her exceptional academic achievements and keen intellect, as well as foreshadowed her dynamic career in leadership and philanthropy.
Her late husband Bill described Pat as a “professional volunteer.” Pat served as a member of various boards in Grand Rapids including Aquinas College, Butterworth Hospital, the Porter Hills Foundation, and the Grand Rapids Community Foundation. Pat led the Grand Rapids Community Foundation as its first female Executive Director from 1980 – 1986. She was acting Executive Director of the Frey Foundation from 1988 – 1990. Pat’s other commitments included serving as President of Junior League of Grand Rapids and President of the East Grand Rapids Public Schools Board of Education. She also served as a member of the City of East Grand Rapids Planning Commission from 1976 – 1980. A member of Grace Episcopal Church throughout her adult life, and a member of the Vestry from 1979 – 1981, Pat was a woman of profound and deep faith, which comforted her throughout her entire life and especially in her final days. Pat also enjoyed longtime membership at Kent Country Club, where she loved to meet friends for an afternoon of bridge and (occasionally) a round of golf with Bill. Curious by nature and an avid reader, Pat embodied the definition of a “lifelong learner,” which even extended to embracing current technology to adapt to physical challenges during what she called her “battle against old age.”
Pat was the kind of person we all strive to be. She personified graciousness, elegance, thoughtfulness, generosity of heart, positivity, intentionality, and perseverance. Simply put, Pat was beautiful inside and out. She loved her family and friends dearly, and she loved the community to which she was devoted. But most of all she loved Bill whom she met at age 17 and with whom she formed a remarkable partnership and love story. Pat will be deeply missed.
Pat’s legacy continues through the lives of her three devoted children John (Louise “Punky”) Edison, Barbara (Michael) Pemberton, and Stephen (Monica) Edison; seven adoring grandchildren Patty (Vincent) Racco, Michael Edison (partner Meaghan Cotter), David (Katie) Edison, Kyle (Stacey) Moore, Julie (Eric) French, Maggie Edison and Grace Edison; and thirteen wonderful great-grandchildren Cira, Mia and Nadia Racco, Bailey, Liam and Lila Edison, Avery, Rylee, Maddie and Charlie Edison, Lillian Moore, and Eli and Henry French. Pat also leaves behind sister-in-law Mrs. John S. (Penny) Edison, and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Porter Hills, and especially Paige Hendrickson, Linda Gaffin, and Kris Bennett for their exceptional friendship and care.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 23 at 11:00 am at Grace Episcopal Church (1815 Hall Street, SE Grand Rapids). The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 10:00 am.

Ted Frey - April 26, 1944 - April 11, 2022

Departed: 04/11/2022 (Grand Rapids)
Obituary Preview: Edward “Ted” John Frey, Jr., age 77, of Ada passed away peacefully at his home on April 11, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. He was a beloved father, son, husband and brother. Background
An entrepreneur, business and real estate developer, philanthropist, family man and animal lover, Ted Frey made an indelible impact on communities in west and northern Michigan.
Ted was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on April 26, 1944, the son of Edward J. Frey, Sr. and Frances “Tallie” M. (Taliaferro) Frey. After graduating from Ottawa Hills High School where he played basketball, Ted attended Grand Rapids Community College and Grand Valley State College (GVSU).  He began his career working at Foremost Insurance Company and Union Bank & Trust Company. Ted then spent nearly two years in South America working for World Bank where he provided agricultural lending and worked to develop high yield crops and boost irrigation. Upon returning to Grand Rapids, he honed his skills as a real estate developer, working on several development projects in downtown Grand Rapids.
In 1979, Ted along with his wife Elizabeth, moved their family to Harbor Springs. He brought with him a sharp mind for numbers and entrepreneurial spirit and continued developing businesses and real estate in northern Michigan. Having been involved in the brick and block business in Grand Rapids and Detroit, he founded Emmet Brick and Block in Petoskey, a business that still thrives today.
Ted enjoyed a simple quiet life surrounded by the beauty of northern Michigan’s landscape and the crystal-clear waters of Lake Michigan and Little Traverse Bay. It was there that he took up golf. His passion for the game sparked a vision that resulted in the design, development and construction of Little Traverse Bay Golf Club & Restaurant, a hidden gem nestled among the hills overlooking the panoramic views of Little Traverse Bay. The golf course and restaurant operated for three decades before Ted sold the property.
An avid sailor, Ted competed in numerous Chicago-to-Mackinaw and Port Huron-to Mackinaw races and spent countless hours sailing the beautiful waters off Petoskey and Harbor Springs.
Ted treasured time with his current wife of 26 years, Brenda, as well as his children, grandchildren and dogs. He loved to travel with Brenda, and they explored many places around the world. He had a passion for all animals, but in particular dogs. He was instrumental in establishing a veterinary clinic at Little Traverse Bay Humane Society, a no-kill animal shelter. While it is often said that dog is mans’ best friend, it was apparent that Ted was also dogs’ best friend.
Ted had recently sold his home in Harbor Springs to return to his birthplace of Grand Rapids and purchased a home in nearby Ada. Ted and Brenda also have a home in south Florida where they have spent the past 27 winters enjoying the warm weather and sunshine. Community Service
Ted was a loving and compassionate man intensely focused on community, diversity, philanthropy and education. With a deep sense of humanity and a generous spirit, he was actively involved in the communities of Petoskey, Harbor Springs, Charlevoix and Grand Rapids. He constantly fought for equal housing, education, employment and health care opportunities for all. He was a quiet mentor to many and believed in fostering the potential of others. He silently worked behind the scenes as he developed projects to better serve the communities he loved.
The Petoskey Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, The Little Traverse Bay Conservancy, The Dyslexia Center, Little Traverse Bay Humane Society and Dental Clinics North are just a few of the many organizations Ted was involved in. Most recently, he worked with North Central Michigan College in Petoskey where he helped develop a plan to provide quality, high tech education to students and to provide continuing education for all regardless of age, race, ethnicity or economic status. Ted served for decades as a trustee, treasurer, chairman and investment committee member of the Frey Foundation based in Grand Rapids. For more information regarding Ted’s grant making and leadership roles within the foundation, please click here: https://freyfdn.org/ted-frey
Ted’s commitment to service and love for his family and community continued through his final days. His spirit and legacy will live on, and he will be truly missed by those who knew and loved him and those whose lives he touched. Family
Ted is survived by his wife, Brenda, and his faithful chocolate lab, Henry. Also surviving are three daughters, Mary E. Frey Bennett (Richard) of Gainesville, FL, Cynthia A. Frey of Harbor Springs, MI and Sarah R. Frey of Harbor Springs, MI; six grandchildren, Luke, Eric and Emma Bennett, Grant and Grace Rose and Laura Young; three siblings, Mary “Twink” C. Frey of Grand Rapids, MI, John M. Frey (Hildi) of Charlevoix, MI, and David G. Frey (Judy) of Grand Rapids, MI; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Barbara C. Frey, and grandson, Parker W. Rose. Services

Christos T. Panopoulos - January 01, 1936 - April 05, 2022

Departed: 04/05/2022 (Grand Rapids)
Obituary Preview: Christos T. Panopoulos, accomplished entrepreneur, avid golfer, grateful philanthropist, shrewd card player, nature lover, proud patriot, faithful servant and true family patriarch, is now at rest.
Chris was the first of five children born to Theodoros and Athanasia Panopoulos, in Dara, Arcadia Greece on January 1, 1936.  Before he emigrated to the United States at the age of 19, he survived two wars which provided the context for many of his most formative experiences.  He was sponsored by his Uncle Xenophon (Panopoulos) Payne, in Chicago where he started to build his American dream.  After working various jobs while learning English, he earned his United States citizenship and attained his cosmetology degree, eventually taking over a small salon in The Pantlind Hotel in Grand Rapids, MI.  He married Joan Vallas in 1964 and together, with their parents, they built Salon Enterprises, which included Panopoulos Salons, Haircuts Plus, and CHIC Cosmetology Schools.  Success with this business afforded them the opportunity to bring his siblings to America to create their own destinies.
Chris was involved in many community organizations including the Grand Valley University Foundation and Metro Health Foundation.  He was honored to be inducted into the West Michigan Businessman Hall of Fame in 2004.  He was an Archon of the Greek Orthodox Church and a member of Leadership 100.  Chris was an outdoorsman who tended to his garden, hunted, fished, and golfed at every opportunity.  He appreciated good food and wine, devoured fresh figs (often from his own trees), and celebrated every occasion.  He loved his native Greece, but he was a proud American, often heard proclaiming “God Bless America!”  Though Chris was proud of his business, his true loves were his church community, his many friends and, above all, his family.
A courageous fighter to the end, Chris battled cancer successfully for many years, against all odds.  He faced that obstacle with the courage, determination, optimism, and perseverance that defined his entire life.  Chris is survived by a loving family including his devoted wife of 57 years Joan, his daughters Paula (late Mark) Hurd, Thania Panopoulos, Alicia (Evan) Magas and Christa (Jason) Bird.  He adored his seven grandchildren: Kelly (Tommy), Kathryn, Nicholas, Jenna, Christos, Sophia, Thano and his great-grandson, Cooper.  He is also survived by his brother Demetrios (Chrysoula) Panopoulos, his sister Iota (George) Mourloukos, his brother-in-law John Pappas, his sister-in-law Connie Vassiliades (late Tony), and many nieces and nephews.  Chris’ friends from Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Cascade Hills, southern California, and Salon Enterprises were like family to him as well.  Chris was preceded in death by his parents, Athanasia and Theodoros Panopoulos, his sister Lola Pappas and his brother Panos Panopoulos.
He lived with great faith, gratitude, and an infectious love of life.  His family thanks God for his many years and feels blessed beyond measure for the life he and Joan created, the opportunities they provided, and the community they served.  May his memory be eternal.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 10th from 3pm-7pm.  Funeral Service will be held on Monday, April 11that 11am.  Both the visitation and funeral service will be held at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 330 Lakeside Drive NE.  Burial service will be private for the family.

Frank Reynolds Blossom - June 12, 1946 - April 02, 2022

Departed: 04/02/2022 (Grand Rapids)
Obituary Preview: Frank Reynolds Blossom was at his core a story teller, coach, teacher, and mentor whose gift to the world was helping others bring out the best in themselves. He was a true creative who loved finding new ways to express ideas and solve problems.
His career took him into advertising, where he turned his gift for storytelling into memorable campaigns to help brands find their voice. Frank’s storied career as Creative Director at Leo Burnett, D’Arcy, Noble & Associates and Felder Communications Group propelled top brands like Heinz Ketchup, Maytag and Lay’s Potato Chips into mainstays of American culture. In 2010, Frank was awarded The Silver Medal, the American Advertising Federation’s highest honor to professionals who have made outstanding contributions to the advertising and marketing industry and who have been active in furthering creative excellence and responsibility in areas of social concern.
He developed his coaching voice on the soccer field, using his skills honed as an All-American player at Ohio Wesleyan to coach neighborhood kids and eventually his own daughters in the beautiful game. His coaching turned to teaching when he became a professor of Advertising at Grand Valley State University where he used his experience in the advertising world to create programs and opportunities to help students practice their skills like Yardsticks, Creative Smackdown, GrandPR, and the Bloom Group. He took pride in using his networks to help students land their first internships and jobs, and was always generous with his advice and recommendations. In 2018, following his retirement from GVSU, the Frank Fund Endowment was established as a way to help defray the costs of “non-traditional educational experiences” including creative professional development, conferences, and interviews for cross country opportunities. The endowment was created for creative community members to “give back, so others can move forward” as a way of funding “extra mile” costs for students.
Coming from a family of strong women, including his mother, wife, two daughters and four sisters, he also found ways to contribute outside the classroom, focusing on opportunities for women and girls. He lent his time, energy and creative talents to the Women’s Resource Center, an organization working to empower women in the workplace, served on the Board of ANSWER, an organization supporting girls education in Nepal, and worked with the Pediatric Oncology Resource Team, serving West Michigan families with children battling cancer.
He found joy in helping others, though he was most happy on the porch of the family cottage in Castle Park, carefully selecting an appropriate soundtrack, and regaling visitors over bocce and cocktails with new (and many old) stories.
He had a quirky sense of humor, expressed in his colorful socks and hats, constantly changing flags, and favorite pranks on friends and family. His passion for life and loyalty was only tested by the Chicago sports teams he loved, who taught him lifelong lessons about disappointment and hope for better days.

Peter White Steketee - May 07, 1940 - March 31, 2022

Departed: 03/31/2022 (Grand Rapids)
Obituary Preview: Peter White Steketee was born in 1940 to parents Paul “Jack” F. Steketee, Jr. and Marian White Steketee who both predeceased him.  Peter had one sister, Sallie Steketee Warner, who also predeceased him on January 21, 2022.  He is survived by her three daughters and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Peter grew up in East Grand Rapids, attended East Grand Rapids High School and graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts in 1958.  After graduation he went on to the University of Michigan graduating with high honors in 1962.  He was a member of the ATO fraternity throughout his college years.  He became an avid fan of the University of Michigan football and basketball sports teams and remained a fan his entire life.  After graduation from Michigan, he continued his education at the Harvard Law School graduating with a J.D. degree and high honors in 1965.
Peter leaves behind a family grateful for his love and generosity: loving wife of 58 years, Joan Powers Steketee; children, John Steketee (Tina), Andrew Steketee, and Elizabeth Steketee (Mike Maloney); as well as six grandchildren, Charles Steketee (Kristen Withrow, mother), Jonathan (Jack) Steketee, Henry Steketee, Eleanor Steketee, Imogen (Emma) Maloney, and Benjamin Maloney.  He was devoted to his family and friends and will be greatly missed.
In addition to his devotion to family, Peter was committed to fighting for the natural resources all Michiganders hold so dear, and he leaves a legacy of commitment to conservation.
Peter’s legal career began in 1966 at Pillsbury, Madison and Sutro in San Francisco.  During the four years he practiced there he handled oil and gas matters and was an active member of the Sierra Club.  He was instrumental in San Francisco’s urban renewal of Alamo Square, stopping the development of the Bolinas Lagoon on the San Andreas Fault and the development of parks in San Francisco.
Over the time period of 1967 through 2008, Peter practiced with VanderVeen, Freihofer & Cook in Grand Rapids.  After his association with the VanderVeen law firm, Peter continued practicing law as a sole practitioner, specializing in environmental cases with the West Michigan Environmental Action Council, and Scenic Michigan. In 2009 Peter was awarded a Special Conservation Award by the Michigan United Conservation Clubs (MUCC) for work on the following: *Bottle bill initiative *Deregulation of DDT *MDot – stopping wholesale cutting of roadside trees Capping the number of billboards in Michigan
*Consumers Power – stopping use of plutonium as fuel at their Big Rock Reactor.  As a  result of Peter’s work on the case President Carter issued an executive order suspending the use of plutonium.
One of Peter’s greatest achievements was assisting the West Michigan Environmental Action Council in obtaining passage of the benchmark Michigan Environmental Protection Act of 1970.
In addition, Peter represented MUCC in the dispute over interpretation of the tribal Treaty of Washington of 1836 relating to Great Lakes fishing rights and inland hunting and fishing rights.  Peter spent over 30 years involved in this complex case which was not settled until year 2000.  The foundation laid in the 2000 settlement resulted in a 2007 Inland settlement that protects these resources and provides a fair use of these resources in the future.
In presenting the Special Conservation award, the MUCC described Peter as an extraordinary legal analyst with an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of the issue that was key in its ultimate resolution and his ability to maintain calm and perspective when emotions on this issue were very, very high… by peeling back the layers of those emotions to get to the real issues.
Peter gave freely of this time and expertise for fisheries, wildlife and water quality issues for many, many years.  A big thank you to Peter for his dedication, steadfastness, skill, and legacy of commitment to conservation.
Peter was not “all work and no play.”  He was an accomplished painter in oil and pastel for portraits, florals, and landscapes.  He enjoyed working in his art studio and experimenting with new techniques.  He followed in the footsteps of his grandmother, Sallie Hall Steketee who was a painter, and Helen Steketee.  In addition, Peter took delight in creating cartoons.
Throughout his life Peter seemingly was never without a book in his hand.  He collected a large library of books, many of which were books signed by the author.  He had an encyclopedic knowledge of birds, flowers, rocks – geology, insects, astronomy, and history, much of which he loved to tell his grandchildren about as he walked the trails and wandered the woods Up North.
Perhaps fly fishing was the hobby Peter enjoyed the most.  He loved fishing for trout at his cottage on the Little South Branch of the Pere Marquette River and in Colorado.  He could fish for hours on end.
Over his lifetime Peter enjoyed travels to San Francisco, Colorado, and Nantucket Island, Massachusetts with his family for vacations.
In later life Peter spent several years residing at Green House #2 in Cook Valley Estates, Grand Rapids, Michigan.  He exhibited a great sense of humor, was quick with a laugh, and entertained fellow residents with stories and jokes around the dinner table. A private family ceremony is planned.  The family wishes to thank all the staff who cared for Peter during the time re resided at Green House #2, as well as Emmanuel Hospice for their special care and support of Peter.  Please, no flowers.  A memorial contribution may be made to either of the following: The Land Conservancy of West Michigan 400 Ann Street NE, Suite #102 Grand Rapids, MI 49504 Or Addison Gallery of American Art/Phillips Academy 3 Chapel Avenue Andover, MA 01810

William " Mike " Conlin - Unknown - March 07, 2022

Departed: 03/07/2022 (Grand Rapids)
Obituary Preview: William Michael "Mike" Conlin left this earth on March 7, 2022, after a brief illness, ending a great run of 94 years. He was born in Brookfield, Missouri, where he developed a keen love of aviation. Mike would frequent the Salinas airfields and hitch rides on flights there from friendly pilots, including one ride that he took to Florida with no return plan, prompting a call to his tolerant mother that he would get back in a few days. After graduating high school, he served in World War II in British Guiana. His love for all things aviation and flight was a personal passion and also became the focus of his professional life. A move to Los Angeles, California lead to both his first job at Western Airlines, and his introduction to Margaret Jarmer. They married and eventually moved to East Grand Rapids, Michigan, where they raised their two daughters, while Mike held managerial positions for numerous aviation-related businesses. He then moved on to hold roles with Lear Jet in Wichita Kansas , then moved to Dallas working as the U.S. face of the French helicopter firm Sfena. This led to his love of France and many happy trips to the country - including a 2001 trip to Paris with his entire family. After a brief attempt at retirement he and Margaret formed Merlin, a successful aviation consulting practice. He and Margaret both received their pilot licenses and enjoyed flying to many locations around the U.S. They traveled to all seven continents, with particular highlights being Antarctica, New Zealand, and Singapore - and while they were home, they volunteered for the Frontiers of Flight Aviation Museum in Dallas. Margaret passed away after a long illness in 2016. He was then fortunate to find new love and happiness with Glenda and they married in 2018. Glenda and Mike spent the last four years together at Porter Hills Retirement Village in Grand Rapids, where they enjoyed attending St. Thomas church, visiting with family and traveling to Greece, Pentwater, Traverse City and the U.P. Mike was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was a devout Catholic and rarely missed a Sunday mass - no matter where his world travels took him. And he was a sharp thinker, with a keen recollection of his travels that he shared in vivid stories with his family and he followed national and international news with great interest. We are grateful for the compassionate and professional care he received at Blodgett hospital. Mike was predeceased by Margaret Conlin and infant son David. Mike is survived by his wife Glenda Conlin; daughters Margot Shirley (Gary Johnson) and Rosemary Conlin (Mikel Cahill); grandchildren Matt Furjanic (Jen Trompeter) Melanie Ryan (Dave Ryan), Lucy Cahill, and Nina Cahill; and great grandchildren Parker Ryan, Elliot Ryan, and Grayson Furjanic. The funeral will be held at St Rita's Catholic church in Dallas, on March 25. A memorial will be at Porter Hills Town Square on Wednesday March 16 at 11 a.m.

Joan Marie Lynch - December 28, 1930 - February 24, 2022

Departed: 02/24/2022 (Grand Rapids)
Obituary Preview: Joan Marie Lynch – called Joanne by her husband and Nonee by her grandchildren – passed away peacefully on Feb. 24, 2022, holding the hands of her children. She was 91, and in the days preceding her death, she declared it was time to “go home.”
Joan was born on Dec. 28, 1930, in New Boston Township, Mich., and grew up in Saginaw. She graduated from Saint Peter and Paul High School in 1948 and met Edward Lynch – Pete, as she called him – shortly afterward on a blind date. They married on Nov. 17, 1951, and had four children: Michael, Tracey, Peter, and Dan. Joan and Pete moved to Lapeer in 1957, where Pete served as superintendent of schools and Joan formed friendships that would last decades. They lived in Lapeer for 27 years before moving back to Saginaw – first into Joan’s mother’s home after her mother, Maude, died, and then to a small ranch home with a blue bedroom and a talking car – a Chrysler experiment that never took.
In 1990, Joan and Pete moved to Grand Rapids and across Plainfield Ave. from Tracey and her family, ensuring Tracey’s three children would be exposed to infinite “Nonee-isms.” Joan often asked rhetorically, “Who has more fun than people?” and no one had more fun than her grandchildren. Visits with Nonee included trips to Showbiz Pizza (and later Chuck E. Cheese), baskets of fish at Long John Silver’s, and shopping at Meijer Thrifty Acres. Raised during the Great Depression, Joan understood the value of a dollar, and she bestowed her budgeting tips and tricks on anyone who would listen.
A self-proclaimed VIP – Very Irish Person – Joan was a devout Catholic, attending Mass every Sunday at St. Jude Parish, where she also helped count weekly tithing. She was especially proud to see her son, Peter, be ordained as a Deacon in 2017. In her final days at Boulder Creek Memory Care, despite the dementia that cruelly took too many of her memories, she still could recite her Hail Mary’s and participate in the Rosary. Joan is preceded in death by her parents, John and Maude Clark, her beloved husband, Pete, her eldest son, Michael, her brother, John, and her sisters Audrey Speckhard, Colleen Auld, and Christine Rutherford. She is survived by her children: Tracey (Floyd) Champagne of Grand Rapids, Rev. Mr. Peter (Kathy) Lynch of Lapeer, and the Honorable Judge Dan (Carolyn) Lynch of Concord, NH, as well as nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and dozens of nieces and nephews. While her family will miss her dearly, Joan always reminded them that “time goes by.”
A funeral Mass and celebration of life is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 28, at St. Jude, 1120 4 Mile Rd., Grand Rapids. The family will receive visitors from 10-11 a.m. in the church vestibule just prior to the funeral Mass. Interment at Saint Peter and Paul Cemetery in Wyoming will be private.
