Herman Edwin Amolsch - February 15, 1941 - May 16, 2024

Obituary Preview: Herman Edwin Amolsch, 83 years of age, passed away peacefully into the arms of his beloved “Trish” on May 16, 2024. Herman was born in Monroe on February 15, 1941, to Andrew and Hazel (Zimmerman) Amolsch. He was raised by his sister Stella after the death of his parents.

Herman was baptized on June 1, 1941, and confirmed May 29, 1955, as a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he also attended school for K through 8th grade. He was a 1959 graduate of Monroe High School where he excelled and lettered in football and baseball.

He met Patricia, the love of his life, at a court dance at St. Mary’s Park in 1954. They married on June 4, 1960. Herman was employed by Ford Motor Company for 36 years, retiring in 2001. In the early years of his Ford employment, he also worked for Banas and Wrobel and did blueprint drawings for several contractors. After retirement, Herm and Trish spent several winters in Arizona. In 2008, due to health issues, they sold their place in Arizona.

Herman was a remarkable golfer, spending all of his summers honing his talent at Dundee Golf Course. There he made lifelong friendships and maintained a family relationship with the Flynn family, especially Dan and his family.

Herman is survived by two daughters: Kelly (Mitchell) Brower and Kimberly Collum; grandchildren: Stefenni (Terry) Turner, Ashley (Chad) Ewing, Patricia (Michael) Zinner, Megan Heil, Aryn Brower, Andrew (Nick) Brower, Adam (Julie) Brower, Brandon Calkins, Jeffrey (Abigail) Calkins, and Austin Calkins; great grandchildren: Dylan and Landon Turner, Rachel and Payton Zinner, Charlotte Ewing, Reid, Jack, and Finn Heil, and Emelia Scarantino; and a sister: Sharlene Cote of Alabama. His passing was preceded by his beloved Patricia in 2019; a daughter: Kristen in 2023 and her spouse Paul in 2018; his parents; four siblings: Stella, Richard, Sherman, and Rosella; and his beloved four-legged companion: Jake.

Friends may gather from 2:00pm until 7:00pm on Wednesday; May 22, 2024, at Merkle Funeral Service, North Monroe; 2442 North Monroe Street, Monroe, Michigan 48162 (734) 384-5185. A Funeral Service Celebrating His Life will follow at 7:00pm also at Merkle’s with Pastor Mark Witte officiating. Since Herm and Pat spent many Saturdays attending U of M Football with family and friends, please wear your favorite U of M gear. Obituary Preview: Dominic “Vincent” Ruffolo or Vincent was born on June 20, 1956, in Detroit, Michigan. He was one of four children born to the union of Joseph Ruffolo and Anne (Walin) Ruffolo. He attended Melvindale High School, graduating with the class of 1974.

Vincent worked for several years as a transmission assembler employed by Massey Ferguson. After the company closed, he took a position in the construction industry as a hardwood floor sander.

Vincent loved being in the outdoors whether he was hitting the links at one of his favorite golf courses or spending time on Lake Erie with his cousins Sam and Mickey fishing for walleye or a boat full of perch. He enjoyed horse racing and was excited to attend the Kentucky Derby but was just as fond of the races at Northville Downs. He was a Detroit sports fan always rooting for the Red Wings and the Tigers. An avid winemaker, he enjoyed his homemade red wine.

Dominic Vincent Ruffolo, age 67 of Newport, Michigan passed away at Wellspring Lutheran Services on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, surrounded by family. His passing was preceded by his father; Joseph Ruffolo and one brother; Jeffrey Ruffolo.

To cherish Vicent’s memory he leaves his mother: Anne Ruffolo of Newport, Michigan; a sister: Julie (William Michael) Wilson of Carleton, Michigan; and a brother: Dean (Sally) Ruffolo of Virginia; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Obituary Preview: Violet Emmieline Freeman was born on May 20, 1936, in Lambertville, Michigan. She was one of three daughters born to William G. Freeman and Carmen (Cassady) Freeman. Violet was blessed with the birth of three sons and two daughters of her own. A loving mother and wife, she raised her children on an eighty-acre farm in Ida, Michigan alongside her husband, Oliver Strack. After Ollie’s passing, she later wed Donald Nickel. The proud wife of a United States Army WWII veteran, Vi was a lifetime member and Past President of the American Legion Post 514 Auxiliary in Ida, Michigan.

After her children were grown, Vi began working as a telephone operator for Bedford Answering Service. She later took employment as a receptionist at Bedford Motor Corporation. A talented crafter and painter, she owned and operated a ceramics shop. She was a big fan of “The King of Rock n Roll” and loved listening to every single song Elvis performed. Vi also enjoyed trying her luck at bingo.

Known to have a lead foot, Vi could often be seen speeding through town. Fortunately, she never experienced anything more than a minor fender-bender and continued to drive independently into her eighties. Strong-willed and self-sufficient, Violet was confident enough to have chosen the life path that was right for her and lived without regret.

Violet Emmieline Strack-Nickel, age 87, of Monroe, Michigan passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday; May 14, 2024. Her passing was preceded by her parents; her husband: Oliver Strack; her husband: Donald Nickel; a son: Norman Beamer; a daughter-in-law: Norma Beamer; two granddaughters: Anjuril Autumn Miller and Lyndsei-Nicole Summer Tuttle; and two sisters: Edna Gill and Lois Slaughterbeck.

Liz graduated from Airport High School in Carleton, Michigan with the Class of 1970. During her marriage, Liz was blessed with a son, Ronald. She was employed as a quality technician at Amex Plastics for many years until retiring in 2018. Not one to stay idle, she returned to work on a part-time basis just a year later. Although she was never afraid of a hard day’s work, she greatly appreciated the simple act of relaxing on her chair after a long day.

For the most part, Elizabeth never cared much to venture far from the comforts of home. However, she recently took a memorable trip to Pennsylvania with a group of friends and happily reported that she’d had a wonderful time. Liz found her greatest joy in her grandson, Jacob. A member of the United States Air Force, she was extraordinarily proud of his service to our country.

Elizabeth Ann Foley, age 71, of Monroe, passed away peacefully at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Ebeid Center, in Sylvania, Ohio on Tuesday; May 14, 2024. In addition to her parents, Liz’s passing was preceded by her son: Ronald Foley on September 18, 2018; and her sister in-law: Joyce Snodgrass.

Obituary Preview: Timothy Dwayne Harris was born on September 28, 1973, in Monroe, Michigan. He was the son of Bobby Wayne Harris and Joan Elizabeth (Joblinski) Harris. He attended Airport High School.

A man of many talents, Tim was a gifted artist preferring the mediums of pen and ink he painstakingly sketched drawings of elephants, monsters, faces, eagles, and roses to name a few, captivating all who saw them. His endeavors didn't stop there as he also made beautiful, beaded jewelry, from necklaces to bracelets, and shared these passions with those around him. He enjoyed journaling and writing poems.

At an early age, Tim developed a love for the simple pleasures of life and cherished every moment he spent with loved ones. Though he never had children of his own, his natural connection with them was quite evident. He shared his time, creativity, and heart with them. Whether it was jumping on the trampoline or surprising them with new toys, Tim knew how to care for his younger siblings and nieces and nephews. He was a big kid himself with a huge heart. He enjoyed reading them stories and loved how they naturally gravitated towards him, recognizing his kind and playful spirit.

Tim felt most at peace when spending time with nature. He loved all animals, walking to the beach, or spending time at the park. He had a passion to care for the Earth and diligently recycled everything he could.

Although he was always up for an adventure and the first to hop behind the wheel for a road trip, his willingness to help around the house was truly appreciated by his father.

Timothy Dwayne Harris, age 50 of Monroe passed away unexpectedly at ProMedica Toledo Hospital on Monday; May 13, 2024. At his passing, Tim gave the gift of life to others through his selfless donation of organs and tissues through Life Connections of Ohio. His passing was preceded by a brother: Nathan in 2008; a nephew: Jace Smith in 2018; and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Obituary Preview: Mary Katherine Voigt or “Kati” as she was affectionately known was born on July 9, 1957, in Monroe, Michigan. She was one of three children born to the union of Samuel Voigt and Helen (Sagan) Voigt. Kati attended St. Mary’s Academy in Monroe, graduating with the class of 1975.

On October 3, 1975, Kati married the love of her life, Jerry Cobb at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Monroe. Together the couple were blessed with three children. To help provide for her family, Kati worked many years for the Monroe Public Schools as a bus aide and lunchroom assistant before retiring in 2014.

Kati was a member of CrossPointe Church on Stewart Road in Monroe where she enjoyed being a part of the Love Lifters, an outreach ministry that made crafts for church mission trips. She loved all animals especially her two cats: Jessie and Princess. When traveling to Knoxville, Tennessee to visit her daughter or Omaha Nebraska to visit her son she spoiled their dogs with treats. Kati loved watching all the crime shows on tv but was most fond of NCIS, Blue Bloods, Matlock, and Murder She Wrote. She enjoyed spending time in her garden and canning what she grew. She liked canning corn and tomatoes to create her homemade salsa. Her most cherished time, however was spent with loved ones baking Christmas cookies, preparing homemade cheesy potatoes, or doing all the preparations for a summer barbecue.

Mary Katherine “Kati” Cobb age 66 of Monroe passed away on Tuesday; May 7, 2024, at the Corwell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. Her passing was preceded by her parents: Samuel and Helen Voigt, a sister: Marci Greening; and an infant son: Jason William Cobb.

To cherish her memory she leaves a husband of forty-eight years: Jerry Cobb of Monroe; a daughter: Kristina (Darick) Vass of Knoxville, Tennessee; a son: Jason (Carrie) Cobb of Omaha, Nebraska; a brother: Samuel (Jennifer) Voigt Jr. of Lake Orion, Michigan; eight grandchildren: Ashlynn, Trentton, Steven, Nolan, Samantha, Kimber, Daxton, and Emjae; and one great grandchild on the way that “GiGi” was very excited to love and spoil.

James Michael Darnell - May 16, 1951 - May 04, 2024

Obituary Preview: James Michael Darnell was born on May 16, 1951, in Detroit, Michigan. He was the second eldest of four children born to Howard Darnell and Ann (Copeland) Darnell. He graduated from Taylor Central High School with the Class of 1969 where he lettered in baseball and basketball. He continued his education at Central Michigan University.

Mike was a proud member of United Auto Workers Local 600 and provided for his family with his employment at Ford Motor Company. He was an exceptionally hard worker, putting in forty-six years of dedicated service before retiring in 2017. During his tenure at Ford, he was blessed to have met his fiancé, Pamela Cranford. The couple enjoyed more than twenty years of companionship.

A sports fanatic, Mike cheered on the University of Michigan, Detroit Lions, and the former Oakland Raiders football teams. He was also a Detroit Red Wings hockey fan. Mike earned many trophies playing slow pitch softball for Ford. Always conscience of his health, he was an avid weightlifter. Mike also enjoyed the great outdoors. He always paused to appreciate the true greatness of the sun slipping beneath the horizon. An avid fisherman, Mike took many trips to Canada and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to cast a line alongside his brother, Randy. He was often the man behind the grill or frying up the catch of the day.

A PC gamer, Mike challenged himself to the games Doom, Duke Nukem, Quake, and Half-Life. He enjoyed classic rock music and attended many concerts, including his favorite bands: Black Sabbath, Rush, and Metallica. Mike was a night-owl who often passed the hours until sunrise by tuning into Sci-Fi flicks and Clint Eastwood Western movies. A devoted father, he loved spending time with his children more than anything else. Mike never missed any of their activities, ever present with his camera in hand, ready to record the moment. Very talkative, Mike considered no one a stranger. He was a straight shooter who never left you wondering what was on his mind.

James Michael Darnell, age 72, of Carleton, Michigan passed away unexpectedly at his home on Saturday; May 4, 2024. His passing was preceded by his parents: Howard and Ann Darnell.

Obituary Preview: Ora Marie Stults was born on September 21, 1927, in Lynn, Alabama. She was a daughter born to the union of Daniel Stults and Isabell (Ward) Stults. She was gainfully employed for nearly twenty years as a sewing machine operator with General Motors Corporation. On September 7, 1946, Ora married the love of her life, Delbert Johnson and the couple was blessed with the birth of five children.

Ora grew up with a fondness for the treasures one could uncover at flea markets and garage sales, a passion she pursued with enthusiasm throughout her life. For Ora, the thrill was not just in the finding of a great deal but in the stories and history every item carried with it.

When her mobility became limited, Ora didn’t let that dampen her spirits. She began making delicious fried apple pies, a treat that brought her community to her front door. Her pies became famous in her hometown, combining her love for cooking with her innate hospitality. People from all walks of life stopped by to pick up a pie, share a story, and on occasion, enjoy Ora’s delightful company.

The Covid pandemic in 2020 meant an end to her impromptu pie gatherings, but not to the bonds she had formed with those around her, who continued to support her in any way they could.

A self-proclaimed master gardener, Ora also possessed a profound love for flowers, a passion that began in her early years. Her garden was a place of refuge and joy, filled with a variety of blooms that reflected her love and care.

Ora Marie Johnson, age 96, formerly of Newport, Michigan, passed away at her daughter’s home in Woodstock, Alabama, on Saturday, May 4, 2024. Her passing was preceded by her husband of fifty-one years: Delbert; a daughter: Sheila Bell; and a son: Jeffery Johnson.

To cherish her memory, she leaves three children: Roger (Rochelle) Johnson, Melanie (Dennis) Allen, and Donna Bercheni; nine grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.

This respect and tenderness remained a core part of who he was throughout his life.

He was known for his bright smile and contagious laughter, filling every room with joy. Blake had an innate ability to connect with people, driven by his immense love and respect for others. He saw the best in everyone, always offering the benefit of the doubt and trusting freely, his soul guided by an unshakeable faith in humanity.

An ever sweet and comforting presence, Blake cherished his relationships. Above anything, he possessed a particular devotion to his family. His loyalty and love were the pillars on which many relied.

Obituary Preview: Lisa Ann Helmick was born on January 23, 1971, in Monroe, Michigan. She was one of three children born to Richard Helmick and Irene (Childs) Helmick. Lisa attended Monroe High School where she was a talented member of the softball team. She later continued her education at Monroe County Community College. On July 8, 1988, she wed the love of her life, Roy Anthony Cordial, whom she’d known since age fifteen. The couple were blessed with a son and a daughter. Although they eventually went their separate ways, Lisa and Roy later reconnected.

Lisa was employed as a site clerk at TMS International for the past eleven years. She had an eye for landscaping and beautifully decorated her yard with elaborate rock gardens and unique décor. Lisa also enjoyed antique shopping for anything that piqued her interest, which included several old-fashioned school desks. She also collected angels for a time. Lisa often scrolled through YouTube watching music videos of her favorite artists, Kid Rock and Jelly Roll.

Lisa loved being outdoors amongst the wildlife. Animals were drawn to her like “Snow White”. They seemingly sensed her kind nature and would come right up to her. Lisa also took in several stray animals who came to her in search of a loving home. Wild or domestic made no difference to Lisa as she bestowed all animals with their own special name. A safe haven for all, Lisa had a huge heart. She was quiet, but friendly and opened up once she got to know someone. More than anything else, Lisa adored her grandchildren. She cherished the time she spent with them, even if they were doing something as simple as digging a hole in the ground together.

Lisa Ann Cordial, age 53, of Monroe, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday; May 2, 2024. Her passing was preceded by her parents and a brother: Richard Keith Helmick in 2000.

Shirley married William “Bill” Jennings on November 1, 1955, and they shared a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and adventure. Together, they embarked on numerous journeys, but it was their jaunts to Texas to visit their son, William, that led them to fall in love with the Lone Star State.

Shirley discovered her passion for art and creativity at a young age. As she matured, this passion evolved into a profound talent for oil painting, especially for serene landscapes, which brought to life the beauty she saw in the world.

A woman of many talents and hobbies, Shirley had a keen eye for treasures and could always be found exploring local thrift stores, hunting for hidden gems. Her hands were rarely still, as she spent countless hours crocheting blankets, each stitch filled with love and warmth, which she generously gifted to many family members and friends.

Shirley’s faith played a significant role in her life. She was a dedicated member of the North Monroe Street Church of God, where she formed lifelong friendships, particularly with her closest friends, Barb, and Evelyn. The trio were inseparable, often being spotted enjoying laughter-filled lunches and supporting each other through life’s ups and downs.

Shirley Ann Jennings, age 86 of Monroe, passed away at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital on Thursday; May 2, 2024, at 5:30am. Her passing was preceded by her husband: Bill and a daughter: Cynthia Cosby.

Her professional life was as colorful as the cakes she decorated. Her career blossomed at the Awrey Bakery in Livonia. It was there that she met her future husband, Duane Chipman. She married Duane, the love of her life, on June 27, 1970. The couple was blessed with the birth of two children.

An artist at heart, Dolores was renowned throughout her life for her beautifully crafted cakes. Whether it was creating intricate wedding cakes for family and friends or whimsical birthday cakes for many family members, her creations were always made with love and keen attention to detail.

As a mother, Dolores soon found joy in the togetherness of community service. Her journey of giving began with volunteering for the Girl Scouts and the Boy Scouts, where she made an impact for several decades. Her deep commitment to nurturing young minds was further demonstrated through her involvement with the 4H club, guiding the next generation with patience and wisdom in numerous agricultural and craft projects.

Dolores also played a significant role in the Jefferson education system, particularly in the art room of Miss Conner's class. Here, she earned her affectionate nickname 'Grandma Dee,' a testament to her warm, grandmotherly guidance to the many children whose lives she touched.

Dolores Chipman, age 78, of Monroe, passed away at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital on Thursday; May 2, 2024. Her passing was preceded by her parents; a brother: George Kastura; a sister: Mary Barbara (Richard) Vargo; her father and mother-in-law: Don and Lucille Chipman; a sister-in-law: Diane Stocking; and a great granddaughter.

Obituary Preview: Julie Ann Dussia was born in Sylvania, Ohio on December 5, 1959. She was one of four children born to Donald and Inez (Scott) Dussia. Julie was a graduate of Airport Community Schools in Carleton, Michigan. She was blessed with the birth of three sons: Aaron, Kevin, and Rodney.

Julie was employed at Johnson Controls in Monroe, Michigan for ten years. She previously spent a decade working for Time Container, also in Monroe. More than anything else, Julie cherished her role as a mother and grandmother. She often babysat and never missed her grandchildren’s sports games and other school events. Julie also enjoyed watching Disney and Christmas movies with the kids, including her favorite flick: “The Wizard of Oz”.

A talented crafter and seamstress, Julie sewed blankets and created yard art which she offered for sale at local craft shows. She also hemmed clothing for all of the grandchildren. Never afraid to tackle any project, Julie was a devotee of the “Do It Yourself” mantra. She possessed the skills to use whatever tools she needed to bring the creations she envisioned to fruition. Julie was equally talented in the kitchen. Her family especially enjoyed her baked goods, deviled eggs, and sloppy joes.

Julie made many trips to visit family in Florida, as well as California, where her son, Aaron, lived at the time. Outgoing and friendly, she never met a stranger. Although her independent spirit could lead her to be stubborn at times, Julie always had the best intentions in her heart. A fantastic mother and grandmother, she truly left a lasting legacy.

Julie Ann Mayes, age 64, of Monroe, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Tuesday; April 30, 2024 at Medilodge of Monroe. Her passing was preceded by her parents and a granddaughter: Nora Mayes.

Sandra loved to do all sorts of arts and crafts but painting ceramics was her favorite. She enjoyed any time spent with her grandchildren, especially when they joined in on the craft projects. She filled her time at the nursing home building puzzles, playing Bingo, and euchre with her friends there. She could be spotted at the local Goodwill or Dollar Store searching for her next treasure on any beautiful day. Sandra always loved the feeling of the sunshine and could be found relaxing by the pool. Memories of playing Tonk with family was something she cherished the most.

Robert had many varied interests and expertise. These broadened interests extended to his enduring love for automobiles, spending countless hours in his garage tinkering with cars.

Robert Burton Guthrie, age 88, of Roseville, peacefully passed away at Elderly Solutions under the care of Elara Hospice on Saturday; April 27, 2024, at 8:25am. He had been in rapidly declining health since March. His passing was preceded by his parents; his first wife: Carole M. (Schultise) Guthrie; his second wife: Eleanor M. (Dueweke) Guthrie; a sister: Margaret Klang and his rescue companion "Brandi" who passed in January of 2020.

Obituary Preview: Ruby Ann Lester was born on August 28, 1937, in Tazewell, Tennessee. She was one of eight children born to the union of Lon L. Lester and Viola (Buchanan) Lester. As a young girl, Ruby came to Monroe, Michigan where she made her home.

On April 9, 1955, at the home of Reverend James Hosch, Ruby married the love of her life: Merlin Leach. Ruby and Merlin were the first couple to be married by Reverend Hosch. Together they were blessed with two beautiful daughters: Pamela and Patricia. She was a proud founding member of the Monroe Apostolic Church now known as Gracepoint United Pentecostal Church. Ruby enjoyed serving others. She often lent a helping hand to the ladies at church making peanut brittle for the church fundraiser, visiting local nursing homes with her husband, or spending time at the Camp Lord Willing RV Park treating camp-goers with her beautiful voice.

Ruby liked watching game shows and her favorites shows included “Wheel of Fortune”, “Jeopardy”, and “The Price is Right”. Ruby made sure to always look her best. She pampered herself getting her hair done at the local or shopping at different stores like Sears, Dillards, and Elder-Beerman. She also liked to eat out with Big Boy and Cracker Barrel being her favorite choices. She never missed an opportunity to peruse the Cracker Barrel gift shop.

Ruby once had the opportunity to visit the Grand Ole Opry. Her trip was fondly recalled for many years as she was entertained on the stage by Minnie Pearl and Loretta Lynn. Of all things in this life nothing brought a smile to Ruby’s face faster than spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Gathering together to share a meal such as on Thanskgiving and Christmas or having the children parade around in their Halloween costumes was family time that she cherished.

Obituary Preview: Dewey Franklin Ervin was born on August 18, 1956 in Middlesboro, Kentucky. He was the son of Clarence and Maggie Ervin. For many years Dewey was employed as a sexton at various cemeteries, preparing the final resting places for residents of Kentucky and Tennessee. He also worked for a time at a tree service, where he was never afraid to climb as high as he needed to get the job done. Dewey wed Shirley Herrell and was blessed with a daughter, Emily. Although the couple went their separate ways, they later reconnected and Dewey settled with Shirley in Monroe, Michigan in 2006.

Dewey had an immense appreciation for the great outdoors. When visiting family down south, he enjoyed sightseeing, often walking the trails through the hills of Kentucky and Tennessee. A fisherman, he spent much time on the shores of Lake Erie casting in a line. Dewey was a talented handyman who could tackle any home remodeling project. He was an equally talented mechanic and generously completed vehicle repairs for his family and friends.

A master of the grill, Dewey could perfectly sear his favorite porterhouse steaks. He enjoyed tuning in to “Law & Order” as well as Western movies and “Walker Texas Ranger”. Extremely outgoing, Dewey never met a stranger. Although he could be stubborn as a mule, he loved to laugh and cherished spending time with his family.

Dewey Franklin Ervin, age 67, of Monroe, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday; April 20, 2024. His passing was preceded by his parents; a step-son: James Carey; twin grandsons: Rolland James and James Rolland Hayes; infant grandsons: Malachi and Aiden Wilson; and four brothers: Jay Ervin, Grant Ervin, Gene Ervin and Charles Ervin.

James Newton - September 22, 1938 - April 18, 2024

Obituary Preview: James Wallace Newton was born in Detroit, Michigan on September 22, 1938. He was one of six children born from the union of Oscar Newton and Hazel (Olson) Newton. He honorably served in the United States Army, dedicating himself to our nation and earning his GED while enlisted.

On February 6, 1960, Jim married the love of his life, the former Anita Sword. The happy couple were blessed with the birth of two children. To provide for his family, Jim devoted thirty years as a janitor employed for the Ford Motor Company. His tales from his workdays, especially the memorable incident where he inadvertently parked a front loader atop the foreman’s car, brought much laughter and a few winces to all who heard them.

In their early years, Jim and his wife, would escape the harsh Michigan winters for the more forgiving climate of Clearwater, Florida.

A fervent angler, Jim spent countless hours on Lake Erie aboard his prized boat, the “Wendy Jo”, a twenty-foot Thompson Cutty Cabin boat, with many of his family or friends. He truly enjoyed casting his line and waiting for the next big catch.

Jim’s athleticism extended to the golf courses, where he and his lifelong friend, Bill McDonald, were familiar faces at the River Raisin and the former Lilac courses. On the green, as on the lake, Jim’s sportsmanship and camaraderie were ever present.

Even as dementia began to cloud his mind, Jim's instinct, and ability to fix anything and everything remained undiminished. His hands were rarely still, always tinkering, repairing, creating.

James “Jim” Newton, age 85, of Newport passed away at his home, on Monday; April 18, 2024. His passing was preceded by his wife: Anita (Sword) Newton; five siblings: Bill Newton, Mary Ellen Barr, Harry Newton, Kathrine Mullens, and Lee Schmelzer.

Obituary Preview: Ronald Edward McGregor was born on December 5, 1953 in Wyandotte, Michigan. He was the eldest of four children born to Edward and Helen (Slepsky) McGregor. Ron graduated from Melvindale High School in Melvindale, Michigan with the Class of 1972. He then continued his education at Henry Ford Community College.

Ron learned to cook while employed at the famous “Sign of the Beef Carver” restaurants. He later established a catering company, “Call the Cook”, which he owned and operated for several years. On November 16, 1990, Ronald wed the love of his life, the former Joyce LaVeque. After meeting his wife, Ron moved from the Downriver area to Monroe, Michigan. The couple enjoyed twenty-one years of marriage.

Throughout his life, Ron was a sports fanatic. He played baseball as a young man and attended many professional and college games. An avid fan of Michigan State, Ron also cheered on the Detroit Tigers, Lions, Red Wings, and Pistons. He truly found joy in the simple things in life. An ideal day could be spent on the shores of Lake Erie, casting a line in to see if anything was biting. He also enjoyed visiting historical sites and was intrigued by investigative television programs such as “Forensic Files” and “Unsolved Mysteries”. Ron was strong-willed and never shy to share his political opinions. Although he could be stubborn at times, he always had the best intentions in his heart.

Ronald Edward McGregor, age 70, of Monroe, passed away at his home, peacefully in his sleep, on Tuesday; April 16, 2024. His passing was preceded by his parents and his beloved wife: Joyce McGregor on June 12, 2011.

Not one to stay in a single spot, he frequently cast his line into the Saginaw Bay and ventured into the Florida Keys as well. But Andrew's love for water wasn't limited to fishing. He was an avid boater, finding comfort in the gentle rocking of the waves, under the vast, open sky.

Andy made friends wherever he went in his Adventures… from across the country to Costa Rica to France his network of friends had no limits. “Andy didn’t know any strangers”. Andrew's enthusiasm for life extended beyond the water's edge. He was a culinary aficionado, known among his friends and coworkers for his signature dishes, including hearty biscuits and gravy, fish fries, and mouth-watering stuffed peppers. However, it was his blueberry pie, made from fresh blueberries picked from Turner’s, that won hearts and rave reviews.

Beyond his hobbies, Andrew was a hard worker, a trait acknowledged by many and appreciated by all who knew him. Despite his rugged exterior, he possessed a kind and generous heart. Friends and family often recounted tales of Andrew chopping wood for elderly members of his friends or lending a helping hand without a moment's hesitation.

One of Andrew's greatest joys was spending time with “the girls”, his beloved Weimaraner and Vizsla dogs: Cinder, Rainey, and Ruby, with whom he shared countless hunting adventures. Together, they roamed the fields in pursuit of pheasants, sharing the unspoken bond of companionship and mutual respect for nature.

Andrew's laughter was infectious, and his ability to find joy in simple pleasures was his gift to those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of love for the natural world, a passion for adventure, and a reminder to cherish the moment.

She was one of four children born from the union of Jordon and Joan (Jacobs) Lockmiller. Jan, as she became lovingly known, graduated with the class of 1972, from Monroe High School in Monroe, Michigan. She then attended a few courses in the Pharmacy curriculum at Ferris State University.

Jan wed the love of her life: David Anthony Sr. and the couple were blessed with the birth of two children. They remained married until his untimely passing in 2002.

Jan was a kind-hearted person whose actions were always guided by her desire to bring joy and comfort to others. She had a remarkable ability to make everyone around her feel valued and loved a trait that endeared her to many. Jan's adoration for the simple joys in life was evident in her hobbies. She possessed a remarkable talent for knitting, creating countless scarves that were not only pieces of art but also tokens of her love.

A lover of games, Jan enjoyed the camaraderie and laughter that came with card nights with her family and friends. Whether it was a competitive game of hearts, or Euchre, she cherished these moments of connection. As a young adult, Jan's enthusiasm for gathering people together shone through her infamous bunco nights and Tupperware parties. These events, always filled with laughter and stories, where hosting was rotated amongst friends, creating memories that would last a lifetime.

Jan’s culinary skills were also unmatched. A master in the kitchen, she seemed to cook anything and everything to perfection. Her joy in baking, especially in the tradition of making cut-out cookies with her parents on the day after Thanksgiving, was a testament to her love for both family and the holidays. Valentine’s Day particularly held a special place in her heart. It was no coincidence that she chose February for her wedding, celebrating her love in a festivity of red and white, encapsulating her passion for love and togetherness.

Janet “Jan” Anthony, age 69, of Monroe, passed away on Friday; April 12, 2024, at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital. Her passing was preceded by her parents; her husband: David, Sr.; and one brother: Rick Lockmiller.

She was the oldest of five children born to the union of Howard Stoner and Mary Elizabeth "Betty" (Sweeney) Stoner. She attended St. John’s elementary and high school at Monroe Public Schools graduating with the Class of 1956. She continued her education at Eastern Michigan University obtaining her bachelor’s degree in education.

Sandra took a position with Jefferson Schools working as an Elementary Teacher. On December 12, 1964, she married James Carrol Norman at Carleton United Methodist Church. Sandra soon left her position to raise a family as the couple were blessed with the birth of three children. She later returned to the workforce taking a position with Airport Community Schools. At Airport, her career spanned many years, often requested by families, she was truly beloved as an educator.

Throughout her life, Sandy was passionate about her children. Always encouraging them and present at all their activities. A wonderful host, her home was always the place to be. The backyard was an oasis, with an inviting pool, where all the neighbor kids enjoyed hanging out. As a grandmother, Sandra remained highly active, doting over her grandchildren, just as she had with her children.

In her free time, Sandy enjoyed bird watching, gardening and beach time in Longboat Key. Being very artistic, following her retirement, she became an accomplished painter. She also liked crafts including knitting. She spent Tuesdays with the crafting ladies at Monroe Missionary Baptist Church.

For fifteen years, Sandy and Jim wintered in Lakeland, Florida. The Snowbirds enjoyed November through April in the Sunshine State. They were extremely social, with a group of friends attending plays, going out to eat, playing cards andr various board games. Most recently, Sandy moved with her daughter Carrie and husband Roy to South Lake LeAnn in Irish Hills. She attended the Lambertville Community Church and sang this last Christmas in the choir.

Sandra Ann Norman, age 85 of Jerome, Michigan formerly of Carleton passed away at 11:09pm on Monday; April 8, 2024. She had been under the care of Heartland Hospice. Her passing was preceded by her parents; husband: James Carrol Norman; a sister: Mary "Betsy" (Herb) Erickson; two brothers: "Bud" Howard Stoner Jr. and Paul (Susan) Stoner; and brothers-in-law: Jack Norman, Thomas Norman.

Obituary Preview: Margaret Lillian Francisco was born at home on December 5, 1928 in Newport, Michigan in the same house where she spent her entire 95 years of life. She was one of two daughters born to the union of Lee Francisco and Charlotte (Schulte) Francisco. She attended St. Mary Academy in Monroe, Michigan, graduating with the class of 1948.

On April 28, 1951, Margaret married the love of her life, Mr. Leo Jondro at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Sadly he passed away on April 8, 1975 the same day as Margaret forty-nine years later. Together the couple were blessed with two children. Although Margaret was married at and attended St. Charles, she was never baptized or confirmed until the Friday before Good Friday when Father Henry Rebello baptized and confirmed her at her home.

Margaret owned and operated the Francisco Insurance Agency in Newport with her sister for twenty-seven years before taking a position as the Secretary to the Vice President of Standard Federal Bank. She worked at the bank for many years before retiring in 1987.

Margaret stayed very active golfing until 91 years of age at the Lilac Golf Course, Monday Lilac Ladies Golf League; bowling in the senior league at Nortel Lanes up until the devastating fire, and enjoyed being a member of the Bookmark Book Club that was hosted at various friends homes. Twice a year she visited Las Vegas with a group of friends to try her luck on the slot machines. Margaret enjoyed being outdoors taking care of her yard and tending to all of her flower gardens.

Margaret Lillian Jondro, age 95 of Newport passed away at home under the care of Heartland Hospice. Her loving daughter was at her side. Her passing was preceded by her parents: Lee and Charlotte Francisco; her husband: Leo Jondro; her son: Timothy in 1973; a sister: Mrs. Carl ( Mary Anne) Jondro; and her long time companion Kenneth Falk.

To cherish Margaret’s memory she leaves her daughter: Susan Jondro (James Kerner) of Newport, Michigan and several nieces and nephews.
