Obituary Preview: CARBONDALE – Elizabeth “Liz” Jane Tomac, 73, passed away on Friday, November 10, 2023 at Century Assisted Living in Carbondale surrounded by her loving family.Liz was born on January 22, 1950 in Highland Park, MI to Steven Tomac and Josephine (Hornick) Tomac. Elizabeth married William “Bill” Crimando on August 14, 1976 in St. Clair Shores, Michigan.Liz worked as a Rehabilitation Supervisor for the Jackson County Community Workshop, now known as START in Murphysboro. She then went on to work as a trainer for Region V Rehabilitation Continuing Education Program at SIU. She will be missed by all who knew her.Liz is survived by her husband of 47 years, Bill Crimando; son, Mark Crimando; sisters, Catherine (Gary) Adler and Stephanie Cunningham; and several nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents; brother-in-law, Bruce Cunningham; and sisters-in-law, Donna Marie King and Frances Marietta Herrick.Funeral Mass for Liz will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, November 15, 2023 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with Father Robert Flannery officiating. She married Donald Buckley on October 10, 2015 in Carbondale and he survives.Beth worked as a hairdresser at JCPenney Salon for over ten years. She also owned and operated her own beauty shop for many years. Haims, 73, passed away on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family.Lloyd was born on November 19, 1949 to Hymen and Bella (Cohen) Haims in Chicago. He married Marcia Jean Brown on September 19, 2003 in Murphysboro.Lloyd is survived by his wife, sister Cheryl (Louis) Cassuto of Mundelein; niece Felicia (Michael) Ratajczyk, nephew Adam Cassuto, and many great nieces and great nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.Lloyd was born and raised in Chicago. He came to Carbondale to go to SIU, fell in love with Southern Illinois and never left. He obtained his bachelor's degree in History and his master's degree in Community Development. He worked in state, local and federal government for many years. Lloyd was an avid sports fan, especially for the Chicago Cubs. He was passionate about all Saluki sports and bled Saluki maroon all his life.A memorial service for Lloyd will be on Sunday, November 12, 2023 at 2:00pm at Meredith Funeral Home with Pastor Ron Beaton and Vanesa Gerchkovich officiating. Obituary Preview: Brian Christopher Brannan, son of Phyllis Cavanaugh and Michael Colón, was born on June 17, 1980, in Hialeah, Florida at Hialeah High Hospital. He was raised in Winter Haven, Florida, and attended the public schools of Polk County, where he achieved his diploma at Lake Region High School. He professed his faith in Jesus Christ our Lord at an early age and proceeded to reconnect and continue his relationship with the Father later in life. His faith was held close to his heart as the Lord sealed his heart with the Holy Spirit and made his name to be read in the Book of Life.He met Melissa Potts in 2001 and was united in a covenantal relationship on June 10, 2010, until 2016. Their Union was blessed with three children, Tyler, Anthony, and Alexander. Along with his previous partner, they bared his eldest son, Joshua Brannan whom he loved dearly and looked to bless them all and to be united with them in his life.Brian was a skilled craftsman who enjoyed working in carpentry and various trades that matched his hard-working mindset. His infectious laugh and comical soul always knew how to be joyful and high in spirits which could be seen by many. His life was always dedicated to serving his children and finding peace in his relationship with them. He departed this life Saturday, November 4, 2023, in Carbondale, Illinois, where he spent his recent years and was loved dearly by friends and members of the community.He was preceded in death by his sister, Michelle Ann Brannan, and nephews, Damion and Hunter Day, Grandfathers, Raymond Andrew Davis and Luis Filipe Colón, Father in Law, Billy Joe Kent, Uncle, Gary Allen Davis, and his aunt, Trudy Ann Markland.He desired to be humble before the Lord. Obituary Preview: Carbondale - Charles Clarence Leming, 87, of Carbondale, passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2023 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.Charles was born November 23, 1935 in Sparta to Clarence and Agnes V (Schmidt) Leming.He married Donna Leming on October 29, 1960 in Cobden. She survives and is of Carbondale.Other survivors include three sons; James (Dawn) Leming of Carbondale, Philip (Laura) Leming of Stanton, CA. and Matthew (Claudia) Leming of Ontario, CA.; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.Charles is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Curtis, Tom and Robert Leming; and one sister, Helen Childs.He proudly served our country, in the Army, from 1958 – 1960. He also worked as a Teacher for Carbondale Community High School for 33 years until his retirement.Charles was a member of St Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Illinois Township Organization, Jackson County Retired Teacher Association, Knights of Columbus, Democratic Jackson County, Democrat Central Committee and the Carbondale Township Clerk. Obituary Preview: CARBONDALE - Jack M. Shelby, 87, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 19, 2023 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in Saint Louis, MO.Jack was born on August 22, 1936 in Harrisburg to Garland and Mary (Ferrell) Shelby. Jack married the love of his life, Avah Louise Phillips, on February 8, 1959 in Harrisburg. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from SIU in 1961 and his Master of Divinity degree from Golden Gate Seminary in 1965. In addition, he studied at Southwestern Seminary from 1983-84, working toward a Doctor of Ministry degree.Jack spent his life in service to Christ as a missionary for over 30 years. Together with his wife Avah, he served with the former Foreign Mission Board, now the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, from 1968-1999. The first years of his work as a missionary were spent in Hong Kong learning the Cantonese language. He would go on to study five other languages, using this gift to preach, teach, translate, and serve in a variety of cultures.During his missionary service, he was a lecturer at Hong Kong Baptist University from 1969-71 and was a seminary professor at the Malaysia-Singapore Baptist Theological Seminary in Penang, Malaysia from 1972-78 and from 1980-82. He was instrumental in starting several new churches in Malaysia and served as acting secretary of the Malaysia-Singapore Baptist Convention from 1974-76. From 1983-86, he served as the National Indian Ministries Director, living in Bangalore, India and traveling throughout the country. From 1986-1992, he lived in Hong Kong, working to place workers from a variety of professions into underserved communities. They moved to Wiesbaden, Germany (1992-94) and then Moscow, Russia (1995-97). After the fall of the Iron Curtain, Jack became volunteer coordinator for the Europe Area, and coordinated work throughout the former Soviet Republics and Central Asia. From 1997-99, Jack and Avah returned to Wiesbaden where he researched unreached people groups in Western Europe and assisted missionaries in planning strategies to reach these people groups with the Gospel.After retiring from the IMB, Jack returned to Illinois and served as IBSA director of Missions and Men’s Ministries from 1999-2005. In 2006 he was named associate executive director for Missions Mobilization. He retired again, but continued to serve on contract in various capacities including as Illinois Baptist Disaster Relief State Director. He made multiple trips to coordinate disaster relief efforts throughout the U.S., including coordinating relief efforts at the World Trade Center following the September 11 attacks, and in Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina. In 2014 Shelby was awarded with the Robert E. Dixon Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in Southern Baptist Disaster Relief, having dedicated 13 years to the ministry. In a final act of service, upon his death his body was donated to medical science.Jack is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Avah Shelby; daughter, Melanie (Philip) Nelson; sons James Mark Shelby (Julie) and Scott Shelby; grandchildren Lydia Nelson, Moriah Puckett, Hannah (Nicholas) Pellman, Rebekah (Brandon) McNeely, Peter (Heather) Nelson, Catherine (Jason) Allison, Megan (Paul) Miller, Ashley Reed, and Eric Reed; and fifteen great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents and twin brother, Edward E. Shirley married the love of her life, Calvin White on September 15, 1951 in Piggott, AR. He preceded her in death on October 24, 2022 having been married for 71 years.Shirley led a life of goodness, love and compassion. She was a warrior in all she did and strove to exemplify God in all she accomplished. If good deeds are embellishments on a crown, Shirley’s would be the most dazzling, precious treasure. A woman like Shirley Gay White is a rarity and the amount of lives she touched with her kind yet tenacious spirit are innumerable. We couldn't put a number on them if we wanted, she always gave with the stipulation that it's a secret between you and her. She poured into others her whole life without a single implication of personal gain. If Shirley loved you, she loved you with every ounce she had to give. Her legacy is spilled out into the women of our family that strive to be the wife, mother, grandmother and friend that she was with such ease and grace. Shirley’s kindness and care blankets over all the generations she has created; we are who we became because of her love. Maximilan and Mildred (Goforth) Shackleton. Tom married Gale Shackleton on April 28, 1973 in Carbondale.Tom worked as the Airport Superintendent at the Southern Illinois Airport until his retirement after 30 years of service. Tom enjoyed working on automobiles, watching racing with his children, and “pestering” his grandchildren. Tom was a proud member of the Village of DeSoto Board. Tom served as the Chief of the DeSoto and Southern Illinois Airport fire departments, and also served as the President of the Coal Belt Fire Fighters Association. Tom and Gale were also named “Senior Citizens of the year” in 2014.Tom is survived by his loving wife, Gale Shackleton; sons, Mike (Kathy) and Matt (Meghan) Shackleton; grandchildren, Stephan (Malerie) Shackleton, Teal (Michael) Felton, Austin Drury, Bridget, Ainsley, Max, and Ben Shackleton; great-grandchildren, Atlas and Indie Shackleton, and Ollie Felton.He was preceded in death by his parents, W. Obituary Preview: Charles Robert Greene, 73, passed away on September 30th, 2023 at his home in Columbia, Missouri surrounded by his family. Charles was born December 6, 1949 in Monee Illinois to Helen Elizabeth (Youngstrom) (decd. 2021) and Charles Eugene Greene (decd. 1951), and was raised by his mother and his stepfather Loren Americus Ross (decd. 2008).Charles, known as “Bob” to all his friends and family, graduated from Crete-Monee High School in 1968. He married his first wife Benita “Bonny” Joy Maciariello (Murphy) in 1970, with whom he had 3 children. Bob served in the United States Army from 1970 to 1972 where he was a Sergeant (E-5) in the Military Police while stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska.After completing his military service, Bob briefly attended Prairie State College in Chicago Heights, Illinois before moving to Carbondale, Illinois in 1973 to enroll at Southern Illinois University (SIU). While at SIU, Bob studied Plant and Soil Science and received his Bachelor’s Degree in 1977 and received his Master’s Degree in 1979. Bob worked for the Carbondale Park District for 30 years beginning in 1981 and was the Superintendent of Park Operations before retiring in 2011.Bob was a loving father to his five children, Eric Christopher Greene, Ivan Anthony Greene, Nissa Gabrielle Leal, Gavin Shaun Flynn and Daylen Skye Flynn, his daughter in law Meni Melek, son in law Gustavo Leal, and his four grandchildren, Darren James Hale, Lillian Joy Greene, Breno Schalch Leal, and Lucas Schalch Leal.Bob was a long-time outdoor enthusiast and enjoyed gardening, camping, fishing and canoeing. Bob also loved music and he enjoyed playing many instruments including the acoustic and electric guitar, electric bass, and the harmonica, and he was an avid collector of vintage guitars. In his high school days, Bob took center stage as the lead singer and bass guitarist for his band “The Coming Generation”. Throughout his life, Bob drew inspiration from musical legends such as Jimmy Buffet, B.B. King, the Beatles, Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan, among many others.Bob is survived by his siblings Carol Susan(Peter) Schutz and Timothy Scott Greene, his children Eric Greene (Meni Melek), Ivan Greene, Nissa Leal (Gustavo Leal) and Daylen Skye Flynn; his grandchildren Darren Hale, Lillian Greene, Breno Leal and Lucas Leal; his dear friends Tom and Sue Dilley, and Jerilu Flynn; and his beloved pets, Delilah from St. Francis and Kitten Shaun, both now residing with Daylen Skye Flynn in Missouri.Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Bonny Joy Murphy (2009), his son Gavin Shaun Flynn (decd. 2015) and his close friend Jodi Louise Flynn (decd. 2017).A Celebration of Bob's Life will be held at 3:00pm on Saturday, November 25, 2023 at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale with Tom Dilley rendering the eulogy. Obituary Preview: Steven Douglas Hacker Junior made his last wildly inappropriate and probably smart comment on September 23rd, 2023.Steven was born and immediately dubbed “the miracle child” by his father Steven Douglas Hacker Senior on July 7, 1988. The constant love, support, caring far exceeded anything Steven deserved. His mother Meleah Paschall worked tirelessly to get him to be a good man of God as he was raised to be.He is survived by his sister Claire Hacker and her husband Joesph Fonseca (Xena Rose, his niece will make her entrance into this world very shortly.) Additionally, his sisters Heather Filson and husband Kyle and Jennifer Sizemore and husband Brent. Steven’s demise will now allow them to emerge from his shadow. A variety of nieces, nephews and cousins would complete the list of those left to embellish his memory. He had two basic philosophies regarding work “careers are for the unimaginative “and, “surround yourself with great people and stay the hell out of their way.”Steven died knowing that Tommy Boy was the best movie ever. Even though Eminem wasn’t his favorite artist, he spent much of his childhood looking like him. He believed that chicks dug him because he was handsome.Although, a less than average life span, Steven did not live an average life. He traveled where he wanted to travel, laughed inappropriately at every chance, told the jokes that he wanted to tell even though they weren’t funny or appropriate, learned what he wanted to learn, fixed what he wanted to fix and loved who he wanted to love.There will be a celebration of life at a later date. Obituary Preview: CARBONDALE - Elizabeth Carol Anne Matheson Crelling, 78, passed away on Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale following a sudden illness.Betty was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada to Neil and Margaret (Miller) Matheson into a family dedicated to public and community service. Before leaving for Queen’s University in Kingston Ontario and graduating with a B.A. in History, she met her future husband, Jack Crelling visiting to research his own Island genealogy.Jack and Betty lived and worked in University communities raising their two boys in active academic environments. She supported musical, academic and athletic endeavors—passionately. She and Jack enjoyed a lifetime of travel related to his academic work and research and their children’s, and eventually grandchildren’s, life events. She was happiest in the midst of family and friends. Betty was an avid walker, birder, gardener and was extremely active in the Parish life of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Carbondale.Over the years Betty worked in archives, libraries and research. Her final research project was a joint effort with her sister to transcribe and memorialize the “Across The Island” columns of her father, an Island representative to Parliament and editor to the Island’s Guardian newspaper, spanning 13 years of wit, observation, folklore and stories from the past. These were gifted to the University of PEI in 2014.Betty is survived by her sons, James Crelling of Boulder, CO and Ian (Lindsey) of Panama City Beach, FL; grandchildren, Emma and Matheson Crelling; and sister, Margaret Matheson of Kingston, Ontario.She was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband, Jack.Memorial Services for Betty will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, September 15th at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Carbondale.
