Ian Ross Wheeler - March 23, 1988 - March 15, 2023

Departed: 03/15/2023 (Bethel)
Obituary Preview: Gorham, NH – Ian Ross Wheeler shed these earthly bounds unexpectedly March 15, 2023.
He was born March, 23, 1988 in Norway on a cold, bright blue March day. He attended Bethel schools and Fryeburg Academy. Over the course of his life, he was employed in various occupations. For some time he and his brother Ryan ran a landscaping business and one of his proudest achievements was being part of the construction of a massive stone wall at Sunday River. He worked for Sunshine Landscaping with Ben Pierce for several seasons and some of his stone work is there as well. Most recently he was employed with Pioneer Surveying & Mapping. He enjoyed explaining all of the techniques and functions he was learning from Rusty Farrar the owner and he liked to talk about all of the different places they surveyed together.
He was good at anything he set his mind to and was a great asset to any project he decided to join. He had great energy and a good eye and an uncanny knack for solving problems. He had a natural ability to fix things. He could always see how the pieces fit together. He was never afraid to put his back into it, always the guy who would pick up the heaviest end of the stick.
Around 2010 he decided to travel out West and lived in Washington, Alaska, California and did a short stay in Colorado and then home to Bethel after his adventures.
Ian enjoyed fishing locally and also made many trips to the Salmon River in NY, starting when he was eleven. He was actually kind of a star on the river because he was so good at a young age, landing uncounted numbers of King and Coho Salmon, Brown Trout and Steelhead. Running around the river, only four feet tall he hooked into a big one, yelling “FISH ON!” at the top of his lungs. Some of his best and happiest days were spent on the river with family and friends. A picture of him holding a big Steelhead was published in a New York fishing magazine.
Ian enjoyed music from a young age and was a fan of a lot of “classic” rock as well as contemporary music. He was well versed about many artists and styles. Over the last couple of years he taught himself to play guitar, and he had a good voice to accompany his playing.
Ian had an inquisitive mind and it was full of things that he had discovered, researched or read and his thoughts and interests were far ranging. Always innovating and thinking of better ways to do things. An adventure to talk to, never afraid to speak his mind and always a challenge to your point of view. But maybe most of all Ian was a free spirit shunning convention in many ways and treading his own path. He loved people and was forgiving and loyal, if you needed him he’d be there.
The myriad of people he knew and the friends who have reached out in this time of grief speaks volumes. He was a person who most would not soon forget once they met him. He remains in our hearts forever.
Ian is survived by his father John Wheeler and partner Deborah Giasson, sister Jenny Mae Wheeler and partner Jim Lindsay, and nephew Aiden. Brother Ryan and spouse Devon Wheeler, nephew Asher, and niece Brecklyn all of Bethel. Brother Josh Maillet of Durham, NC. His grandmother Marilyn (Wheeler) Estrada of West Paris, uncles and aunts, Roger Wheeler of Newry, Tim and Stacey Wheeler of Bethel, Chester Wheeler and partner Dee Witherell of Northwood, NH and Harry and Judy Morton of Kentucky. And many Wheeler and Morton cousins. Family members Dennis and Maryvonne Wheeler, Sue O’Donnell, Cindy Mills, and Sandra Wheeler all of Bethel. Ashley and Justin Hautaniemi, and MaryBeth Brown.
He is also survived by his mother Heidi Smith Roy and husband Clem of Destin, Florida. Aunts and uncles Rebecca Barlow and partner Scott Pelissier of Norway. Wendy and Tony Lewis of Sheridan, Illinois, Wanda Smith of Woolwich. Holly Ellingwood of South Paris and David and JoAnn Smith of Oxford. And many maternal cousins. He was predeceased by his grandparents Wendell and June Smith.
Ian would want us to make mention of his brothers from other mothers, Brady “Gump” Wilson, Cassidy White, and Shaun Hunt and “second parents” Dave and Berta Hunt of Albany.
A service and celebration of Ian’s life will be held at the Bethel Inn Event Center on May 6th, from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. To express condolences or to participate in Ian’s online tribute, please visit www.chandlerfunerals.com.

Michael Kevin Broderick - March 30, 1951 - August 30, 2022

Departed: 08/30/2022 (Bethel)
Obituary Preview: Michael Kevin Broderick, 71, of Bethel, passed away on August 30, 2022 after a long battle with dementia. The son of John and Madeline Broderick, he was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, in 1951. He graduated from Our Lady of Good Counsel in Wheaton, Md., and later obtained degrees from Boston College and Boston University. He met his wife, Eileen, while both were working on the John Kerry campaign in 1972; they were married on August 31, 1974.
From his first job in high school until dementia forced his retirement, he was committed to hard work; it was through no fault of his own that three of his last four employers—Dynapert, Encryption Technology, inc., and the American Skiing Company—ceased to exist during his employment with them.
Mike was committed to learning in all aspects of his life; he regularly pursued opportunities for learning and advancement in his career, in service to community, and in his passion for skiing and teaching skiing.
His marriage is remarkable for many reasons, not the least of which being that not only did it last for nearly fifty years, but it survived both his car catching fire on a date and Eileen teaching him how to ski.
Many years later, he taught skiing in Sunday River’s River Runners program, often coaching the children of the women his wife coached in the Women’s Turn program. They also passed a love for skiing on to their sons Kevin and Brian, both of whom have earned USSA coaching certifications; Mike also earned USSA coaching and officiating certifications in both alpine and freestyle skiing as well as multiple PSIA certifications. He was also a member of the board of the Sunday River Ski Club.
He was active in the local parish for many years, helping Our Lady of the Snows welcome local residents and visitors alike in celebration of the sacraments.
He believed that service to community included political service and was involved in the Oxford County Democrats as well as with town politics. The Maine Democratic Party recognized his efforts with the Joseph Mayo award in 2006. He saw value in having both parties represented on the ticket even in races likely to be one-sided, and wasn’t afraid to put in the effort to run a serious campaign even when the odds weren’t on his side.
He is survived by his wife Eileen; his brothers Jack and David; his sons Kevin and Brian; his aunt, Rita Doyle; his four grandchildren: Ellie, Everett, Oliver and Holden; his mother-in-law Marilyn Brennan; his brothers-in-law Timmy and Billy Brennan; his sisters-in-law Kathy Holland, Lynn Brennan, Susan Babson and Jamie Broderick; his daughter-in-law Kayla Broderick; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Brian R Douglass - June 07, 1958 - February 05, 2022

Departed: 02/05/2022 (Bethel)
Obituary Preview: Brian R. Douglass 1958~2022
Brian R. Douglass, 63, of Bethel passed away unexpectedly at his home on February 5, 2022. Brian was born on June 7, 1958, in Lewiston, ME. to Richard and Grace (Taylor) Douglass of Bethel, ME. He graduated from Telstar High School in 1977 and continued to work for his family’s business, Richard A. Douglass INC. He was married in 1978 to his high school sweetheart, Gina Emery at which time they ventured off to Florida looking for new adventures and work. They finally ended up in Raleigh, NC. for 18 months learning on the job carpentry. They found the busy city life a huge change from living in the glorious mountains of quiet western Maine and decided family was much more important at which time they returned to Bethel.
Brian worked for his family's business with all his heart and soul for the rest of his life. His work in the field of rock and dirt evolved with his brother Brent by his side over many years even before finishing high school. The business started with his father Richard Douglass on a smaller scale with a backhoe and a dump truck and over the years they grew their business into a very active rock crushing company in a small quarry in Albany, ME. Their family business challenged him every day to work harder to crush the best product for every construction need over the years. He loved learning more and progressing every day to build their business. The crushing business kept him busy half of the year. During winters he and his brother plowed the Bethel Regional Airport and worked to repair crushing equipment for the next season. Brian and his brother were a team of many talents and worked diligently to build their business into what it is today. His job never felt like work for Brian but more like a hobby with the need to produce a great quality of product for everyone all over the area and beyond. He simply loved his work and the constant challenges it created daily.
When Brian wasn’t working in the quarry, which was very seldom, he loved cutting wood with his wife and sons which was almost meditative for him. Once in a while on weekends he would take a break from all the work that was never ending and take his favorite play toy, the jet boat and his family to his favorite spot on Richardson Lake. He loved to waterski, play games and relax on the beach. Thankfully the joy this gave him was immense. A couple times during the summer he’d hike to his favorite peaceful fishing hole and fish for trout in the quietness of the mountains, mosquitoes and all. He never came home without a delicious feast of fish. His patience and his work ethic were his strong points in his life and what everyone will remember about him. He loved his adult children, his grandson and grand dog with all his heart. All of them put a sparkle in his eye and a grin on his face.
Brian is survived by his wife Gina, his sons; Braden and his wife Andrea, and Bronson; his mother Grace; brothers; Bruce, Brent and his wife Shelley, and his sister Beth and her husband Chuck; grandson, Sawyer; grand dog, Penny; nieces; Brianna, Britany and River Ann. He was predeceased by his father Richard.
We’re very grateful for the Bethel Rescue’s prompt and difficult assistance the night of Brian’s passing. They were very helpful and gracious in a time of great need.
