James Boyce - July 17, 1922 - August 01, 2019

Departed: 08/01/2019 (Hancock)
Obituary Preview: Houghton James Edward Boyce passed peacefully on August 1st at Portage Pointe nursing home in Hancock at the age of 97. Jim was born on July 17, 1922, in Buffalo, New York, the son of James G. Boyce and Nina Pilkenton Boyce. He grew up in Bronxville, New York, where he attended an elementary school based on the educational philosophy
of John Dewey, an experience that made a lasting positive impression. After graduating from high school in Rochester, Indiana, Jim went to General Motors Institute in Flint, Michigan, in a cooperative engineering program where classroom studies alternated with work in the auto plants. His GMI years were broken by World War Two, when he served in the infantry in Europe and the Philippines. After a postwar entrepreneurial stint with his beloved brother Charles, selling homemade “Lucky Club Cola” on the campus at Indiana University, he returned to GMI,
graduating in 1949. He met the love of his life, Alice Hobbs, on a blind date in 1947 when she was visiting relations in Brown County, Indiana. They married in Topeka, Kansas, Alice’s hometown, in December 1949. They lived briefly in Muncie, Indiana, where Jim worked at the Chevrolet plant, before moving to Lafayette where he entered graduate school in psychology at Purdue. Their first child, James Kenneth, was born
there in 1950. In 1953 they returned to Flint, where their son Daniel Hobbs and daughter Marilyn Anne were born. They moved to Troy, Michigan, in 1956, when Jim was transferred to the GM Technical Center in Warren. During their years there he and Alice joined the Birmingham Unitarian Church, where he served as president of its board of trustees. After 22 years with General Motors, he began a new career in academia in
1968, organizing an adult continuing education program at Oakland University. Jim moved to Houghton, in the “Copper Country” of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, in 1970 to join the business school faculty at Michigan Technological University. One of his proudest accomplishments were helping MTU obtain its MBA program
accreditation. Jim realized a long-cherished dream of working in developing countries in 1977-78, when he received a National Science Foundation grant to work on management training with local industries in Medellin, Colombia. In the early 1980s he carried out research at the Monterrey Institute of Technology in Mexico. In both places, to his delight, he happened to overlap with brother Charles, who had become an urban
planner. After his retirement from MTU in 1984, Jim and Alice traveled widely in Europe, China, and throughout Latin America. Jim was an ardent advocate of multi- lingualism, and he and Alice worked tirelessly on their Spanish language skills. In 1994 they served as election monitors in El Salvador following the country’s civil war. In the morning on election day, Jim had a heart attack, and after being
evacuated by the United Nations he had a successful bypass operation in Marquette. Jim and Alice dearly loved the Copper Country, and it became their true home. In November 1994 he was elected to the Houghton County Commission, where he sought to promote development while conserving our beloved natural beauty and heritage. He and Alice were founding members of the Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, and he was active in many civic organizations including the Houghton County Planning Commission, the Copper Country Heritage Council, the
Keweenaw Land Trust, and the Rotary Club. Jim is perhaps best remembered for his indefatigably upbeat optimism and his great
generosity in both spirit and deed.

Adam Drew - July 09, 1987 - July 08, 2019

Departed: 07/08/2019 (Hancock)
Obituary Preview: Adam Dominic Drew - 31, died unexpectedly on Monday, July 8th, 2019. He was born on July 9th, 1987 in Green Bay, Wisconsin to Patrick J. Drew and Martha (Keller) Drew. Adam graduated from Ashwaubenon High School with the class of 2005.
Adam was living in Prescott, Arizona the past 6 years, which suited his appetite for his inquisitiveness and his search to engage in a part of our country’s natural beauty. And, as always, to forge new friendships along the way. He enjoyed his job working in the Lone Spur cafe, working with people who became like family to him.
Adam will be dearly remembered for his ability to make just about anyone laugh in the room. He had a unique, special energy that made you want to be his friend. Adam was a talented self-taught guitar player. He loved films directed by Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino.
Adam impacted the life of those near and far. One of these is his unintended contribution to a book written about the tragic loss of a daughter due to drug addiction, titled “The Day the Musick died”. Adam is mentioned in the final chapter, the author inspired with his success in his recovery after she met him in the Lone Spur cafe in Prescott, AZ. Adam gave her hope that recovery is possible. But now suddenly our Music has died. Songs he so often played on his guitar like “Stairway to Heaven” and “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” will always have a special place in our hearts.
We take comfort knowing Adam is no longer struggling with addiction, a battle he fought for many years. We would have given anything for him to feel that freedom in this lifetime. Our grief over losing him is infinite. And now so is he.
Adam is survived by his mother Mardi Drew (Danny Thornborrow), father Patrick Drew, sister Bailey Drew (Creighton Maricque), Green Bay, brother Dane Drew, Green Bay, in addition to several aunts, uncles, and cousins in Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. Preceded in death by his grandparents Robert and Helen Drew and Marvin and Ann Keller.
A celebration of Adam’s life will be held at the Ashwaubenon Community Center on July 21st 1:30-4:30 pm.

They help notify people of the passing, provide details about funeral services and memorial events, and offer a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, a close friend or colleague may also contribute to the writing process.

What information should be included in an obituary?

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or memorial websites.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspapers often charge by the word or line, while online obituary platforms may offer free or paid options with varying levels of features and customization.

Can I publish an obituary online only?

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the platform or newspaper. Online obituaries can often be published within hours or days, while print publications may take longer due to production schedules and deadlines.

Can I make changes to an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform where the obituary was published to inquire about their correction policy. Some may allow minor corrections or updates, while others may not permit changes once the obituary has been published.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to share the obituary publicly, you can opt for a private or password-protected online memorial page. Alternatively, you can choose not to publish an obituary at all and instead share news of the passing through personal networks.

Yes! Video tributes are becoming increasingly popular as a way to celebrate a person's life through images, music, and storytelling. You can create your own video using personal footage and photos or work with a professional videographer.

How do I share an online obituary on social media?

Most online platforms provide easy sharing options for social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. You can also copy and paste the link into emails or messaging apps to share with friends and family.

Can I update an online obituary after it's been published?
