Robert R. Crabtree - August 08, 1941 - March 13, 2024

Departed: 03/13/2024 (Mechanic Falls)
Obituary Preview: Mechanic Falls - Robert (Bob) R. Crabtree, 82, of Mechanic Falls passed away peacefully in his recliner at his home on March 13, 2024.
Bob was born August 8, 1941, in Easton, Maine, the eldest son of the late John and Beatrice (Hayden) Crabtree. He grew up and spent most of his life in Mechanic Falls, having graduated from Mechanic Falls High School.
Bob worked as a painter for a time, but eventually found his way to Adams Russell Cable as a technician. He was part of the team that originally expanded and built out the cable system in Maine, including to Mechanic Falls and many surrounding towns. He was employed there for most of his working career, and was a manager at the time of his retirement. He had many fond memories of his time there with his co-workers.
You could easily find Bob most days in his garage working on a project - unless he was attending Friday night poker with his friends! It was his passion to have something to fix or create, whether it was “Bob’s Garage” itself, decks, roofs, cars, motorcycles, any small engine repair, or all of his nieces’ and nephews’ bikes and vehicles throughout the years.
Bob loved his critters too! Whether it was bringing home a baby chipmunk or two named Chipper and Chipper 2, or a very special dog named Sam, or building a bird feeding station in his backyard that fed most of the birds and squirrels in the area while providing him endless entertainment in his later years. Bob was also loved by his family members’ pets, whom he would patiently give attention to every time.
Bob was surrounded with love from his three siblings and their families, as well as his wonderful friends. He greatly enjoyed being a part of his nieces’ and nephews’ lives, who he treated like his own. Bob was always there for anyone, in his crisp blue uniform, an anchor that you could count on. He was honest, generous, calm and logical. He would always do the right thing, was easy to talk to, and happy to give his best advice. We are deeply saddened to lose our dear friend and Uncle Bob.
Bob is survived by his brother, Talmadge Crabtree and his wife, Norma of Mechanic Falls; and nieces and nephews, Stephen Chase and his partner, James Tyrrell, of Fryeburg, Cheryl Piper and her husband Don, of Minot, Deborah Marston of Poland, Chad Crabtree and his wife, Rebekah, of Columbus, Ohio, and Julie Roux and her husband, Francis, of Hampstead, NH; and several great nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, John and Beatrice Crabtree; his sister, Lydia Chase, and her husband, Kenneth “Jerry” Chase; his brother, Charles W. Crabtree Sr, and his wife Paula; and his niece, Stephanie Chase Brown.
We would like to send a special thank you to Bob’s good friends, Chuck Morin and Walter and Rena Berry, who visited Bob regularly and helped him maintain his home and garage. We are grateful for all you have done. We would also like to thank everyone for their love and support of Bob throughout his life. He was easy to love and will certainly be missed.

Robert J. Malcolm - October 20, 1931 - February 19, 2024

Departed: 02/19/2024 (Mechanic Falls)
Obituary Preview: South Paris - Robert James Malcolm passed away peacefully with family by his side on February 19th, 2024. He was born in Gardiner, Maine on October 20, 1931 to James and Viola Malcolm. There he spent his childhood years growing up with his three younger siblings (Janet, Marion, Virginia) in a multi-generational household. After high school he entered Bangor Conservatory of Music, with an eye toward teaching music. His time there was interrupted when he was drafted into the Korean war. After serving our country, earning a Bronze Star for Valor, he returned home. Robert earned his BA, completing his degree at UMO.
Robert moved to the Boston area where his sister Marion was training as a nurse. She introduced him to a good friend of hers, Ruth Ryder. This was a pivotal moment in all of their lives. The two fell in love, married and were together for over 50 years, raising five children in Mechanic Falls, Maine during that time. As for teaching music, which was the impetus for moving to that town, the reality was somewhat different than the concept. Like many hats he tried on throughout his life, it did not fit quite right and was uncomfortable. His true passion was playing music, most notably the organ and piano. From a teen through his 80’s, Robert was the soundtrack for countless ceremonies including church services, weddings, and other important life celebrations. An amazing gift he still shared at age 92.
Despite their busy lives, Robert and Ruth always made time for family and friends. Their circle was filled with truly good, kind and caring people. Bob, as his many friends called him, had a sharp mind, a quick wit and wry sense of humor. He enjoyed keeping people on their toes. Rarely would someone get an expected response to any situation. Anyone who spent time around Bob also knew he liked a good drink as much as the next guy, maybe more. That was simply part of who he was.
Traveling with family and friends around the country and beyond was a favorite activity as well as gatherings of loved ones at home. There were many Sunday drives after church, food and family loaded in the station wagon, exploring the back roads using his well loved Maine Gazetteer. Small Point, PEI, Southwest Harbor, and North Conway were places they returned to often.
Robert was predeceased by his loving wife Ruth, his parents, sisters, and brother-in-law Keith and Bob.
He leaves behind his children Bruce (Ruth), Roger (Laurie), Scott, Sonya (Mark), and David, brother-in-law Paul and Ted, along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
His last years were spent in the Maine Veterans Home in South Paris. Malcolm, as he was known there, was well cared for by an amazing team of people who obviously care deeply about the work they do. Once again, he made many friends. He will be missed by all.

However, where he really shined was with one of his many guitars in his hands, and a mic in front of him. He played at many venues in the area and away. He was a very talented musician and also a talented artist, with many drawings. After retirement, he started delivering papers for The Sunjournal where many customers were upset when he gave that up.
Deane lived life his way and nobody was going to change that.
He leaves behind his parents Pearl and Ivan Fifield, his brother David and sister-in-law Cathy, his brother Dale, his Uncle Armand and Aunt Mary, many cousins, nieces and nephews, his life long friends Brian and Sue Spiller, good friend Stephen "Chester" Manchester II, and his dog Johan. He will be missed by many relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held Saturday, December 16, 2023 at Chandler Funeral Home, 26 W Dwinal Street Mechanic Falls, from 10:00am-12:00pm with a service immediately following at noon.

Paul R. Foster - June 26, 1937 - November 21, 2023

Departed: 11/21/2023 (Mechanic Falls)
Obituary Preview: Paul R. Foster 6/26/1937 - 11/21/2023
A collective sigh of relief was heard when the fish in the ponds and lakes of eastern Maine were made aware of the passing of Paul Foster on November 21st, 2023. Paul was known by many things to many people such as; class clown, United States Marine, amazing father and grandfather, master electrician, bee keeper, wood carver and purveyor of wisdom and wit. There is no challenge he would not face be it a large scale job in the trades, projects with the kids or an idea composed in the barbershop think tank. Known for his kindness, generosity and as a man who lived his life exactly as he wished, he will be remembered fondly by everyone who knew him, even if only briefly. This is a man who is already sorely missed by his family and children.
As a tribute to this amazing man we ask that you spend a day with a child of any age fishing, laughing and building memories. Lord; he’s yours now. You may want to order some more coffee!

Fred A. Huntress, Jr. - October 02, 1933 - November 16, 2023

Departed: 11/16/2023 (Mechanic Falls)
Obituary Preview: Fred Allston Huntress, Jr, age 90, passed away with his daughter and son-in-law at his bedside in the early morning hours of Nov. 16, 2023 at the Androscoggin Hospice House in Auburn.
Fred was born Oct. 2, 1933 at Central Maine General Hospital in Lewiston, Maine and raised in Auburn, ME. He was the elder son of Fred A. Huntress and Mary Stiles Huntress. He graduated from Edward Little High School in 1951 and from the University of Maine in 1955 with a BS in Forestry. Fred was employed by Eastern Pulpwood Company out of Calais, ME from June 1955 to January 1956. He served in the Army from February 1956 through December 1957 stationed in postwar South Korea.
Fred married Shirley H. Sanders of St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada in December 1955. He began work as a consulting forester with New England Forestry Foundation and worked for them and also New England Forestry Consultants until he retired. He demonstrated various skills in his forestry work. He was a licensed forester, land surveyor, real estate appraiser, and real estate broker. He could offer complete forestry services in one location.
In addition to his work as a consulting forester he started buying and managing his own forest lands. He enjoyed weeding, thinning, pruning, and harvesting his own timber and estimates he planted more than 50,000 trees. Over the years he spent thousands of hours in his woods. His pride and joy was the Rattlesnake Mountain lot in Casco and Raymond where he maintained the Bri-Mar trail in memory of his children, Brian and Marlene, who passed away in December of 1966. His granddaughter Alexandra is the fourth generation of the Huntress Family to hike the mountain with him.
Of all the trees in the forest, his favorite was the white oak. His interest in this species probably began when he and Brian dug up a small sapling at Rattlesnake Mountain and probably began when he and Brian dug up a small sapling at Rattlesnake Mountain and transplanted it to their home. In all the millions of board feet of timber he marked for cutting during his active years of forestry he never marked a white oak for cutting. For several years he raised white oaks and donated them to the Maine Forest Products Council for their annual fund raising auction. These trees are now growing well outside of their natural range.
Fred was active in many branches of government in Poland since he moved there in 1961, including the planning board, board of selectmen, board of appeals, conservation commission, and the trail committee. Fred was the town forester for the Town of Poland from 1964 until his death. He was also an active member of the Stanton Bird Club for many years and served as president for several years. He was instrumental in acquiring land for the bird club during his active years. Fred served as president of the Poland Historical Society for several years and was a lifetime member. As the license plate BIG TREE on his pickup truck indicated, he was a dedicated advocate of the Maine Register of Big Trees and nominated several species during his forestry career. He found a national record Eastern Larch (Hackmatack) in Jay in i1966.
Fred was predeceased by his wife Shirley and their two children Brian and Marlene.
He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Laurie Huntress, her husband Josh Hounsell, granddaughter Alexandra Hounsell of Hebron and his brother Richard C. Huntress of Auburn.
Fred would like to thank his mother for teaching him about trees and birds and flowers, his father for taking him hunting and fishing, his wife for putting up with him for 55 years, and Laurie, Josh, and Alexandra for giving him hope for the future of his family.
The family would like to thank Elite Home Care of Buckfield and Androscoggin Homecare and Hospice for exceptional care the past four months.

Melissa Parsons Twist - September 02, 1978 - November 15, 2023

Departed: 11/15/2023 (Mechanic Falls)
Obituary Preview: Mechanic Falls
Melissa “Missy” Twist, formerly Melissa Lally Parsons, passed away at home in Mechanic Falls on Wednesday, November 15, 2023.
Missy loved life and although she is gone from this earth far too soon, she filled her years here with plenty of it. She loved children. She was the mother of Zach and Ella Parsons along with the stepmother of Courtney Twist.
For years, she cared for countless children while working at Wilsondale Country Care in Gray, Maine. She would later work at Briarwood Children’s House in Lyman, Maine.
In 2011, she would meet her eventual husband Michael Twist. Together, they founded Twist Family Motors of Cumberland, Maine. Missy served as the General Manager of the dealership and made many friends there thanks to her warm personality. After the business closed, she used that same disposition to become a successful ride share driver in Boston with over 10,000 rides and a near five-star rating. Her favorite shift was overnights and she grew to love Boston and all of its charms – especially during times that others might be asleep for. 2022 was a big year for Missy and her family. They moved back to Maine from the Boston area where she settled into a new family home with Yankee Candles usually burning and dozens of
family photos lining the walls. Even as she struggled with health issues, Missy filled that home with love and character. On a snowy New England day in December, Missy and Michael got married in an intimate ceremony in Ipswich, Massachusetts with family and friends there to share the day.
Missy enjoyed writing poetry, spending time at home while also traveling throughout New England with her family and helping to care for Spot and Gronk – the family dogs.
Missy is survived by her husband Michael Twist, daughters Ella Parsons of Mechanic Falls and Courtney Twist of Malden, Massachusetts, son Zachary Parsons of New Gloucester, father Michael Lally and stepmother Lisa Vasiliauskas Lally of Auburn, Mother Susan Lally and stepfather Russell Levesque of Calibou, sisters Jennifer Lally of New Gloucester and Jamie Lally, soul sister Erin Maschino as well as several nieces and nephews and countless devoted friends. Kenneth C. Carlin - June 18, 1930 - November 06, 2023

Departed: 11/06/2023 (Mechanic Falls)
Obituary Preview: Auburn - Kenneth C. “Ken” Carlin, 93, of Mechanic Falls passed away peacefully on November 6, 2023. Ken was born at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Maine on June 18, 1930, to mother Grace Stowell Holt. Ken grew up on Highland Avenue in Mechanic Falls, only briefly living in Augusta from 1936-1938 before returning to his Highland Avenue home in 1938. Ken graduated from Mechanic Falls High School in June of 1948.
After Graduation Ken’s first job was at Nelson, Son & Page in Mechanic Falls. Later Paul E. Merrill “PEMCO” bought out Nelson, Son & Page, and Ken continued to work there until 1962. Ken often told the story of how his mother handed him an application on his 21st birthday and told him to apply to the Masonic Lodge. He was initiated into Tyrian Lodge #73 at the age of 21 in December of 1951 and raised on January 24, 1952.
The Lodge was a big part of Ken’s life. He had over 70 years of service and held various positions over the years including Master in 1965 and District Deputy for the 23rd District in 1978. He was nominated Mason of the Year for the 23rd Masonic District in 1991. He was also the Grand Representative to Italy for the Grand Lodge of Maine. Ken was coronated a 33rd Degree Mason for the Scottish Rite in August of 1993.
Ken was the sole provider for his mother Grace until she passed away in 1955. After his mother passed, he was drafted by the U.S. Army and served for 2 years starting with training and radio school in Fort Dix New Jersey. Before he was drafted, Ken met the love of his life, Doris Virginia Groves, through his niece Joan Thurlow. Ken told Doris that he wanted to marry her, but she told him she would only marry him if he felt the same way when he returned home from the service. The U.S. Army Forces Far East sent Ken to Korea in 1956 unassigned. He ended up in the Military Police and then to Motor Pool as a Shop Foreman and finally a Specialist 3rd Class. He was in Korea for 16 months returning home in September 1957. He then enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corp Reserves for a total of 6 years as a Sergeant.
Ken finally married the love of his life, Doris Virginia Groves, on November 10, 1957, at the Methodist Church in Mechanic Falls, Maine. Doris was a homemaker and Ken always said she didn’t work outside of the home, but she worked inside of it to care for their family. Together they had three daughters, Virginia, Corinne, and Cheryl. Ken was always a proud dad and husband above all else. He loved his girls more than anything.
In 1962, Ken purchased the Sheet Metal Shop on Maple Street in Mechanic Falls. In 1963, he was given the opportunity to work at the Mechanic Falls Post Office. He did this part time and ran the Sheet Metal Shop as well. He eventually leased out the Sheet Metal Shop and worked nights at Paris Manufacturing until he sold the Sheet Metal Shop in 1965 and began to work full time for the Post Office. He became Postmaster in 1973 and held that position until his retirement in 1990 at the age of 60.
In retirement Ken enjoyed spending time with his wife and family. They spent many weekends together in Casco Bay on Cousin’s Island where Doris grew up. Ken and Doris resided on Highland Avenue in Mechanic Falls for their entire marriage. Doris passed away suddenly on January 1, 2006, and Ken has missed her ever since.
Even if you didn’t know Ken, you more than likely saw him over the years at Kathy’s Diner in Mechanic Falls. Ken was a regular at Kathy’s for over 20 years. Kathy’s was his favorite place to enjoy a good meal, especially breakfast. While he always enjoyed the food, we think he liked to socialize and see everyone there even more.
The family would like to thank Clover Manor Assisted Living in Auburn for giving Ken a comfortable place to live in the last few months of his life. We would also like to thank the Androscoggin Hospice House in Auburn for their care in Ken’s final days.
Ken was predeceased by his wife Doris, his mother, a brother, Russell Holt, and sisters Ethel Thurlow, Thelma Allen, and Patricia Thurlow. He is survived by his three daughters, Virginia Lincoln and her husband Tom of Hampden, Corinne Moore and her husband Eric of Mechanic Falls, and Cheryl Royal and her husband Jeff of Gray. Grandchildren, Chelsea Hodgdon and her husband Sam, Emily Lincoln and her fiancé Colin, Nicole Morris and her husband Ted, Scott Jenkins and his wife Amy, Jacob Moore, Seth Farrington, and Brooke Yankowsky and her husband Alex. Great-grandchildren, Halie and Brycin Vachon, Emily Morris, Emma Jenkins, Grace LeVasseur, Lincoln Hodgdon, Leonardo and Capri MacDonald, Elsa and Evelyn Farrington and Mabel Yankowsky.
Ken was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather that will be deeply missed by all his family and friends.
