Mary Parkinson - July 08, 1927 - September 22, 2022

Departed: 09/22/2022 (Media)
Obituary Preview: Our beautiful mother and mommom, Mary Parkinson, passed away, peacefully on September 22, 2022 at the age of 95.  She was one of 10 children born to her parents, the late Andrew and Anna Grigal Komar. Mary was proud of her Ukrainian heritage and loved her big family.  She grew up in the west end of Chester and attended Dewey Mann and Chester High School.
Mary moved to Ridley Township and later to Springfield, when she married her beloved husband of 56 years, the late Thomas Parkinson.  She was a cherished mother to Tom and Denise; devoted mommom to Luke Vetti (Ushita), Colleen (Peter Sullivan), and Shane; and admiring great grandmom to great grandchild, Inaya Isabel.
Mary was predeceased by sisters Madeline Cernos, Anne Brown, Catherine Mioli, Sophie Sakewicz, Olga, Rose Howley and brothers, Steve and Walter.  She is survived by her brother John.
Mary devoted herself to the welfare of her family and others, always lending a helping hand and giving sage advice.  She had a sweet temperament and a cute sense of humor but did not suffer fools.  She loved children, valued education and fostered a love of reading in the young people in her life, routinely gifting them with books.
She enjoyed music and had eclectic taste but Tony Bennett, Andrea Bocelli and BB King were favorites.  As a young woman, she did wedding gigs playing the accordion and was lead soprano in Chester High’s chorus.  She loved to dance and would jitterbug around the kitchen with Tom (who couldn’t dance), expertly leading the way.
Mary, also, had a sense of style and loved to keep current with fashion trends.
She worked at Baldwin Locomotive in Eddystone, where she managed the supply room and won the beauty title, Miss Diesel.  Mary lovingly raised her family and went on to manage a medical office.
We will miss her beautiful smile, her kind and giving nature, her advice, and strong presence which emanated love.
God bless you, Mom.  We love you, always.
Friends and relatives are invited to her Mass of Christian Burial on September 29, 2022 at 10:00 in the chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Morton, PA, followed by her burial at Calvary Cemetery, Media, PA.

Obituary Preview: Vimala Rajagopal (nee L.G. Vimala), 86, formerly of Media, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2022. Born in Bangalore, India on August 24, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Sri. L. Gundappa and Smt. Sharadamma. She is survived by her three children Madhavi Rizzio (nee Rajagopal), Chetana (Rajagopal) Narasimha Jois, and Sriram Rajagopal (married to Nidhi Gupta); three grandchildren, Nicholas Rizzio, Arjun Rajagopal, and Nishanth Rajagopal; four sisters L.G. Sumitra, Kamala M.S. Balu, Veena Rao and Vasanthi Culleton, and one brother L.G. Jyothishwara. Vimala was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, H.Y. Rajagopal, who passed away in 2018, and her brother, L.G. Amrutheshwara.
Vimala Rajagopal was a teacher, a specialist in Indian folk music and folk traditions, a reputed performing artist, and a lecturer and consultant on Indian culture, who lived in the Delaware Valley for over fifty years and made significant contributions to the cultural life of the Indian community and the community in general. She worked at Elwyn Institute as a Recreation / Music Therapist and taught Kannada language at University of Pennsylvania’s South Asia Studies Department.
She was a talented storyteller who regaled everyone by narrating amusing incidents from her life. Throughout, she remained an inspiration to her family, brothers and sisters, and all students. In the truest sense, she was a cultural ambassador par excellence. In reaching the folk music of Karnataka to audiences all over USA, she sang her way into every heart.
Vimala was born and raised in Bengaluru (Bangalore) and earned a B.A. (Honors) in English Literature from Central College, Bangalore (Mysore University). She was born into a family of rich cultural heritage and language scholarship. Her father Professor L. Gundappa and her uncle Sri Matighatta Krishnamurthy were among the earliest to collect and publish the folk songs of their region in the State of Karnataka. This provided an early contact with and appreciation of Indian folk music. From an early age, she and her sisters Dr. L.G. Sumitra and Kamala M.S. Balu learned folk music directly from the villagers and gave innumerable stage and radio performances in various parts of India, which earned for them critical acclaim from leading literary figures and artists as exponents of authentic folk music. Popularly known as “L.G. Sisters,” they were invited to participate in All India Radio’s prestigious National Program of Regional Music broadcast from New Delhi. They were also invited to sing to many important State guests from foreign countries as well as from within India. They released a CD and of Kannada folk music ("Nadapadagalu"), reflecting the authentic folk music of the Hassan region of Karnataka. These have been acclaimed by critics as an outstanding contribution to Kannada folk music.
In addition to being a distinguished radio artiste, Vimala Rajagopal served the All India Radio as a Transmission Executive at the Vijayawada Station in Andhra Pradesh. Vimala Rajagopal married H.Y. Rajagopal in 1962 and moved to Warangal, India. She had her first daughter, Madhavi, shortly thereafter. She arrived in the US in 1967 to join her husband who was pursuing a Ph.D. in Engineering at Penn State University. She worked as an instructor of Kannada language to Peace Core volunteers by traveling to San Luis Obispo with her 3-year-old daughter, Madhavi. Later, she moved to the Delaware Valley (Broomall and Media) when her husband accepted a teaching position in the Civil Engineering Department at Villanova University. She had daughter, Chetana, and son, Sriram, while living in Broomall.
With her husband, she founded INDUS, Indo-U.S. Children’s Association, dedicated to the cultural development of children and young adults. As a founder member, Program Coordinator, and later President of the organization, she organized a number of programs designed to inform and improve the cultural awareness of children. This was the first organization to provide classes in Bharata Natyam, a classical India dance form, in the Delaware Valley by such Internationally renowned exponents of the art as Indrani Rehman. These classes were organized at a community level and were made accessible not only to persons of Asian Indian origin but to others as well. This was also the first organization to put Indian children and young adults on stage during the Philadelphia Folk Festival, conducted by the Nationalities Service Center, which gave them a sense of uniqueness as well as community togetherness. Other activities planned by her included periodic meetings with invited lectures and artistic presentations.
She organized presentations of Indian music and dance for several local celebrations such as The Philadelphia Folk Fair, India week during bicentennial, and an India Day at Rose Tree Park, Media, PA. In 1981, she led the simultaneous presentations of Indian cultural at The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Fels Planetarium at The Franklin Institute, the Please Touch Museum for the exhibit “Manifestations of Shiva.” For her contribution, she received commendations from Stella Kramarisch, a leading specialist on Indian art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and from many Indian organizations.
Vimala and her husband were keen to share their inspired backgrounds in Indian culture with the community and were founding members of several cultural organizations which have over time have grown to be national in their scope. Examples include SHRUTI, the Indian classical music organization; TRIVENI, an association of Kannada speakers; CIO, The Council of Indian Organizations; PRASTAAPA, a forum for appreciation of literature and arts, and KSR, an organization devoted to the study and promotion of Kannada literature.
Additionally, Vimala Rajagopal worked as a Recreation/Music Therapist at Elwyn Institute, Elwyn, Pa. for 20 years. In her work, she successfully integrated aspects of Indian culture, and introduced many Indian folk arts such as Rangoli and garland making in the therapeutic activities that she designed for the physically and mentally challenged clients. She taught Kolata, the Indian stick dance, to men, women and children with intellectual disabilities, who performed it at their annual talent shows with great enthusiasm. She loved those in her care and received great love from them every day of her work life. Her heart went out to them, and she provided individualized care to give comfort to each based on their specific needs.
Vimala Rajagopal, mother, grandmother, sister, teacher, singer, and cultural leader will be deeply missed but the legacy she created will live on to inspire others for many future generations.

Peter Brower Bloom - June 22, 1936 - September 10, 2022

Departed: 09/10/2022 (Media)
Obituary Preview: Peter Brower Bloom, M.D., age 86, passed away on Saturday, September 10, 2022, at Riddle Hospital in Media, PA.
Peter was born in 1936 to parents Herman and Mary Brower Bloom.  A lifelong resident of Swarthmore, Peter graduated from Swarthmore HS (’54), earned his BA in Chemistry at Cornell University (’58), and went on to study medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School ('62).  During his senior year of medical school and throughout his rotating internship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), his interest in the psychological side of medicine began to develop.  This interest continued during his internal medicine residency at HUP.
In 1963, his residency was interrupted when he was drafted into the U.S. Navy Medical Corps. He served in Albuquerque, NM on a joint service military base for two years.  During his service, Lt. Peter Bloom received the Dept. of Defense’s Joint Service Commendation Medal for organizing Sandia Base Hospital’s outpatient clinic which served 10,000 patients each month.
After his military service, Peter finished his medical residency and gastroenterology fellowship at HUP.  During his GI fellowship, he saw so many patients psychologically presenting as medical illnesses, that he finally decided to become a psychiatrist. Dr. Bloom completed his psychiatric residency at the Institute of the Pennsylvania Hospital in 1971 and immediately started his private practice at the Institute.  When the Institute closed in 1997, he moved his office to Bryn Mawr, PA. He was a preceptor and taught at Penn’s Dept of Psychiatry, becoming a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry in 1992. He was affiliated with Penn for over 50 years.  In 2008, he received the Annual Award for Clinical Faculty, in part for having “served as an outstanding role model for a generation of students and colleagues”. He always believed that the biological side and the psychological side of who we are complement each other.  As a result, his practice of psychiatry was broadly based, with hypnosis as “one arrow in his therapeutic quiver”. He believed that the psychiatrist’s craft is creativity, the willingness of the therapist and patient to try something new or unexpected in the treatment process, rather than being wedded to only one or two theories. “Like all art, it (a patient’s growth) cannot be forced or called upon at will.  I don’t worry when it’s not happening.  I just have to trust the process.”
Dr. Bloom served as president of both the American Board of Medical Hypnosis and the International Society of (Medical) Hypnosis (ISH), where he was awarded the 2001 ISH Pierre Janet Award for Clinical Excellence and in 2004 the highest award of ISH Benjamin Franklin Gold Medal.  He was a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a Fellow of both the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis and Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis.  Dr. Bloom was a foreign member of the Swedish Hypnosis Society and an honorary member of many others including the European Society of Hypnosis.  He was on the editorial board of several clinical journals and has himself published many chapters and articles.
Peter loved to travel. His lecture work with ISH provided Marcia, his wife of 64 years, and him many wonderful adventures. They made many dear friends on the continents of North America, Australia, Europe, and Asia.
Personally, Peter loved music.  He was one of the original members of The Sherwoods of Cornell, a twelve man acapella group founded in 1956. The members continue to come together a few times each year to perform at special concerts and reunions. He loved camping, canoeing, and sailing, skills developed as a boy, teenager, and adult counselor at Camp Pocono. Peter also valued the friendships he made on the golf course at Rolling Green Golf Club.
Peter enjoyed a true love of learning.  He was always home for family dinner and the round table discussions typically involved at least one trip to the encyclopedia.  He believed that an unanswered question was a lost opportunity to expand one’s world. He also enjoyed sharing his interests and knowledge with those around him, young and old.  He participated in Indian Guides, chaperoned school field trips, taught fifth graders on the bus to Williamsburg the fine art of poker, sang in the Swarthmore Presbyterian Church Choir, performed school sports physicals for numerous athletes in exchange for cookies, coached SRA baseball, portrayed Shepherds and Wisemen in the town Nativity Pageant, at Dick Nenno’s urging became a Swarthmore Swim Club 1000 lapper at age 80, and quietly touched the lives of many town residents. Recently he and Marcia moved to Riddle Village where they quickly made many new and interesting friends. Getting to know people was always a great joy to Peter.
Peter will be greatly missed as he was deeply loved by his wife Marcia (nee Bloser), cherished by his children Kathy (George), Diana (Michael) and David (Jennifer), and adored by his “can do no wrong” grandchildren Alexis, Madeline (Stefano), Melanie, Anna, Jackson, and Logan.  Peter is also survived by his sister Barbara, brother Fred (Heike), sister-in-law Karen (Ray), nieces, nephews, and their families. A service celebrating Peter Brower Bloom’s life will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at the Swarthmore Presbyterian Church, 727 Harvard Avenue, Swarthmore, PA  19081
Interment will be private, followed by the Memorial Service at 2:00pm. Gifts to honor Peter would be welcomed by Chester Children’s Chorus Mailing Address: 500 College Avenue, Swarthmore, PA 19081 www.swarthmore.edu/chester-childrens-chorus or Doctors without Borders 40 Rector Street, 16th Floor, New York, NY  10006 www.doctorswithoutborders.org

Dale K. Wheeler - August 10, 1937 - August 01, 2022

Departed: 08/01/2022 (Media)
Obituary Preview: Dale Kenneth Wheeler was born on August 10, 1937 to Elizabeth Pfeifer Wheeler and Kenneth Eugene Wheeler, in Rosedale, Queens, and died on August 1, 2022 so just 9 days short of his 85th birthday. If Dale were here, he would say he was in his 86th year and not far off from his 9th decade!Dale was the eldest of 4 children, with his brothers Keith and Barry and sister Lyn. For the Wheeler’s, family was very important and the siblings were close and loved nothing more than partying with each other. They had many great times at family gatherings in New Milford, CT, on Candlewood Lake and then later, vacationing with each other in far flung places.Dale’s parents recognized his intelligence at an early age. His parents, Kenneth, an engineer at American Bell Telephone Company and his mother, Betty, an Executive Administrative Assistant at Bulova Watch Company learned early that Dale was unusual. Even though his family lived in Queens, Dale attended the competitive Brooklyn Technical High School and travelled far each day on various subways to get to school, which he later reminded his children of frequently.Dale went to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and graduated with a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering. Dale’s first job was with General Electric Company in the Berkshires. It was there that he and other young engineers at GE would frequent parties of the nursing students at St Luke’s. At a party at the boarding house where they lived, “The Castle” in Lenox, MA, Dale was lucky enough to meet a nursing princess, Juliette Bernadette Josephine Roy.Dale and Juliette met in 1960, were married in February, 1961 and quickly were expecting their first baby in January, 1962, Sara Lyn. Three other children followed, Alyson Beth, in 1964, Jill Elizabeth in 1966 and Thomas Jefferson in 1969. Dale earned an MBA at the University of Bridgeport while working full-time and having 3 young daughters. He also was awarded a prestigious GE Management certification in the same time period. Juliette had a career that has spanned over 60 years as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, which had her working long hours and frequently being on-call. Dale was a very hands-on parent (and an unusual father) in that he always made time for his children and often times coached their teams and volunteered for the organizations such as the Tarboro Swim Club.Dale’s work had his family living in many varied places: Louisville, KY, Schenectady, NY, Trumball and Newington, CT, San Juan, PR, Tarboro, NC, Greenville, SC and Baltimore, MD. The Wheeler Family really were Rolling Stones! Dale worked at three major corporations: General Electric, Black and Decker and Singer (owned by Sears.) Dale often traveled to Europe for work and would come home to his family and marvel at the amazing places he had gone like Lake Como, Italy, Germany and Great Britain.Dale’s life work was designing power tools and is credited with nearly 40 patents. His work centered around making power tools more efficient, like the keyless chuck and better hedge trimmers. He frequently gave power tools as gifts and always had a story of how his work had benefited the particular tool.Dale was extremely proud of his children. He was famous for telling strangers that his kids were such good swimmers that they were headed to the Olympics! Tall tales, for sure, but we smile now for we know how much he loved us and believed in us.Dale and his siblings loved the outdoors and were life-long athletes. Dale played baseball growing up, and he also enjoyed a variety of other sports. In his adult years, this love of sports translated to Dale discovering the jogging craze of the 70s and he would often go for healthy runs. Dale was also a competitive tennis player and he loved nothing better than going to the public courts in Tarboro and playing pickup tennis with anyone there, especially the teenagers on the Tarboro High tennis team. Dale’s children witnessed this love of sports and all were athletes in their own rite, swimming competitively, and playing: soccer, basketball, lacrosse and tennis.Dale was also an avid music lover. Dale and Juliette’s vinyl collection turned into an impressive CD collection. Music was usually playing from their stereo in Fallston, and was piped out to the pool area and back porch where Dale spent the time that he was not tinkering. He loved Big Band and swing music, Anne Murray, Glen Campbell, and Trini Lopez, The Kingston Trio and Professor Longhair. Dale and Juliette were also beautiful dancers and really ruled the dance floor. Dale would often complain that no one really danced anymore, they just jiggled around, which of course, he was right about. In his later years, Dale continued to design tools and other contraptions. He didn’t like to use CAD and instead chose to draw his designs on white graph paper with a properly sharpened Ticonderoga. He was an organizational genius and was very happy at his house on the Middle River, near Baltimore, in the shed, working in the yard, or in general, fixing things that were broken. We would be remiss if we did not mention that Dale (and Juliette) loved following politics and were happy to discuss and debate. They were also amazing philanthropists and contributed to literally hundreds of causes whether it was the Rails to Trails, orphanages, veteran’s organizations, etc. They did (and do) consider themselves to be Patriots and are proud Americans.Dale is survived by the princess and his wife of over 60 years, Juliette; his children, Dr. Sara Wheeler Reichard and husband, Dr. Kirk Reichard, Alyson Wheeler Llerandi and partner, Peter Skutnik, Jill Wheeler and Thomas Wheeler; 9 grandchildren, Ashlyn D’Andrea and husband, Joe D’Andrea, Grayson and Spencer Llerandi; Emily, Samantha and Alexander Reichard, Juliette Guillaume and Parker and Patrick Wheeler; and one great grandchild, Joseph Michael D’Andrea.Dale is also survived by his sister, Lyn Kutzelman and husband George Kutzelman, sisters-in-law, Pam Wheeler and Chris Wheeler; nieces and nephews Keith Wheeler (wife Heather), Kim Valzania (husband Mark Valzania), Keri Wheeler (partner Steve Pelton), Julie Kutzelman Pierrat (husband Marc Pierrat) and Stacey Kutzelman Hinton (husband Eric Hinton) plus 8 great nieces and nephews. Dale is also survived by his sister-in-law, Lucille Horton, and 14 nieces and nephews and more great nieces and nephews than you can count in the Roy family.Dale was predeceased by his beloved parents, Betty and Kenneth Wheeler, and brothers Keith and Barry Wheeler and his niece, Robbie Sausville.
