Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, details about their life, and information about funeral or memorial services. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with family, friends, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the deceased, providing closure for those who are grieving, and serving as a historical record of a person's life. They also give family and friends an opportunity to share memories and celebrate the life of their loved one.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend writes an obituary, but it can also be written by a funeral home or a professional obituary writer. The writer should have a good understanding of the deceased person's life and be able to capture their personality, accomplishments, and spirit.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, cause of death (optional), surviving family members, achievements, hobbies, and information about funeral or memorial services. It may also include photos, quotes, or other personal touches.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or private publications.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include photos with an obituary. This can help bring the person's memory to life and make the obituary more personal and engaging.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

The submission process varies depending on the publication or platform. Check their website or contact their customer service department for specific guidelines and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the written obituary, payment information (if applicable), and any required documentation.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the obituary. Some newspapers and online platforms offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge several hundred dollars.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it is possible to write your own obituary. In fact, some people choose to do so as a way to reflect on their life and leave a lasting legacy. However, it's essential to keep in mind that your loved ones may still want to add their own thoughts and memories after you're gone.

What is the purpose of an obituary in modern times?

In today's digital age, obituaries serve not only as a way to announce a person's passing but also as a means of preserving their memory and legacy online. They provide a central location for friends and family to share condolences, memories, and stories.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be an effective way to capture the personality and spirit of the deceased. Just be sure to consider the tone and audience when adding humorous elements to ensure they are respectful and appropriate.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues or controversies surrounding the deceased person's life, it's essential to approach them with tact and respect. Consider consulting with family members or close friends before including potentially sensitive information.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include a request for charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased person's memory and support a cause they cared about.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search for old obituaries through online archives, libraries, or genealogy websites. Many newspapers also maintain archives of past issues that can be searched digitally or in-person.

Can I republish an old obituary online?

The answer depends on copyright laws and permissions. If you're unsure about republishing an old obituary online, consult with the original publisher or seek legal advice.

What is the difference between a eulogy and an obituary?

A eulogy is a speech or written tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service to celebrate the life of the deceased. An obituary, on the other hand, is a written notice announcing the person's passing and providing biographical information.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, poems, or lyrics that resonate with the deceased person's spirit or philosophy can add depth and meaning to an obituary.

How do I ensure accuracy in an obituary?

To ensure accuracy, fact-check all information before submitting the obituary. Verify dates, names, and spellings with family members or official documents whenever possible.

Can I update an existing obituary?

In some cases, yes. If new information becomes available or errors need to be corrected, you may be able to update an existing obituary. Check with the publication or online platform for their policies on updates.

What is the role of social media in sharing obituaries?

Social media has become a powerful tool for sharing obituaries and connecting with others who are grieving. Many funeral homes and online platforms now offer social media integration to facilitate sharing and condolences.

Can I create a digital archive of my loved one's life story?

Yes! Digital archiving platforms allow you to collect photos, stories, and memories of your loved one in one place. This can be a meaningful way to preserve their legacy for generations to come.

How do I deal with conflicting opinions when writing an obituary?

If family members or friends have differing opinions on what should be included in an obituary, try to find common ground by focusing on shared memories and experiences. Remember that the goal is to honor the deceased person's life and legacy.

What is the significance of including funeral or memorial service details in an obituary?

Including funeral or memorial service details allows friends and family to pay their respects and attend services if they wish. It also provides closure for those who are grieving.

Can I write multiple versions of an obituary for different audiences?

Yes! You may want to write different versions of an obituary tailored to specific audiences, such as friends versus colleagues or local community versus online networks. This can help ensure that each group receives relevant information about your loved one's life.
