Louis F. Grund - August 28, 1944 - April 26, 2024

Departed: 04/26/2024 (Willoughby)
Obituary Preview: Louis Fredrick “Skip” Grund, Jr., 79, Painesville, passed away Friday, April 26, 2024, at Grand River Health & Rehabilitation Center in Painesville.
He was born August 28, 1944, in Newark, N.J.
Skip worked at Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company and Fisher Fazio’s before retiring. He was also a landlord. Once he retired, Skip also worked as a courier and a security guard. After being born in New Jersey while his father was in the Navy, Skip grew up in Maryland and then moved to Ohio as a teen and lived there the rest of his life. He remained close to his family in Maryland, though. Each visit to Maryland, he made sure to indulge in childhood favorites such as roadside sno-ball stands and scrapple. His daughters were happy to try a sno-ball, but they wisely refused to have anything to do with scrapple!
Skip especially loved to spend time with his daughters – taking them to see Elvis for their first concert (giving them serious bragging rights!) which was the start of many more in the years to come. They also made frequent visits to Maryland, the Autorama, Cleveland Force games, roller skating, the list goes on and on. There was only one thing Skip loved more than spending time with his daughters and that’s when he was blessed with grandchildren. He never missed any of their ballgames, karate tournaments, cheerleading events, parades, dance recitals and graduations. When any of us asked if he minded attending all our activities, he’d say he didn’t mind because “I get paid by the hour”. Skip had an amazing singing voice and loved to dance (he actually broke his leg dancing!) to all types of music – anything from Elvis to AC/DC, Rolling Stones to Evanescence, gospel to heavy metal and everything in between. Seeing “Phantom of the Opera” in Toronto was a favorite memory and he’d belt out a few bars of “Angel of Music” without much prompting!
He had pet cats and dogs throughout his life and was also known for feeding stray cats. Some favorites are his cat, Ben – a stray he adopted; and his dog, Shandy – who was a blind Maltese that barked his head off at the slightest sound, bit anyone who tried to pet him and peed on everything in his path. A dog only Skip could love! Skip’s last dog friend was Missi’s dog, Tigger. He was so proud of the fact that Tigger had been rescued from an abusive owner and is now living a spoiled life since being adopted by Missi. Skip had a huge heart and was as loyal and generous as a person could possibly be. He’s the guy you’d call if you needed help with a project around the house, to borrow a car, money or to come bail you out of jail! He did it all without complaint. Up until the day he died, he was asking his daughters if they needed money or help with anything else!
He was the loving father of Shelli (nee Grund) Kocis and Missi (nee Grund) Chapman; cherished grandfather of Steven Doremus, Dale Verbic and Jamie (nee Carpenter) (Logan) Foster; great-grandfather of Savannah Foster; grandfather to his special granddog, Tigger; brother of Louise (Clifton) Stanley; uncle of many nieces and nephews; and friend to many.
Skip was preceded in death by his parents, Louis F. Grund, Sr. and Olga (nee Erjavec) Grund; and siblings, Henry Grund and June Delong.
Family will receive friends 2 to 6 p.m. Friday, May 10, at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 38001 Euclid Ave., Willoughby, with a service to follow at 5:30 p.m. Pastor Aaron Taylor officiating. Family and friends to meet at the funeral home 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 11, for a procession to Mentor Cemetery. Burial will be at 11 a.m. After the cemetery, the family asks that everyone meet at VFW 1500, 38295 Pelton Rd., Willoughby, for a luncheon in Skip’s honor.

Joan C. Zimmerman - Unknown - April 03, 2024

Departed: 04/03/2024 (Willoughby)
Obituary Preview: Heaven gained another angel when Joan (nee Davis) Zimmerman, age 90, passed away April 3, 2024.
Born July 5, 1933, in Pittsburgh, Pa., Joan grew up in Weirton, W. Va., graduated high school in 1951, and received her nursing certification from Ohio Valley Nursing School.
Joan married Ernie Zimmerman in 1956, and moved to Ohio in the late 1950s, where they raised their four children. Originally a Cleveland Clinic nurse, Joan was an operating room supervisor at Suburban Community Hospital and at The Center for Plastic Surgery for 14 years, before working as a visiting nurse in Port Charlotte, Fla. A majorette and an avid softball player in high school, Joan turned her athletic ability to golf. She became a scratch golfer at Misty Creek Country Club in Sarasota, playing in many tournaments. She loved golfing with her kids and even beat them a time or two!
After losing husband Ernie in 1989, Joan bought and ran Crawdad’s Restaurant in Venice, Fla. She had the perfect personality to welcome all with a smile, a wink and a drink. Joan could always be counted on to sing “Country Roads” on Karaoke nights and clog to “Rocky Top,” when the band played on weekends. Joan married Milton Thibeault in 1993. When they weren’t golfing, they spent a lot of time in Runaway Bay, Jamaica. Joan loved the sunshine, blue sea water, and dancing to Bob Marley’s greatest hits. Rumor has it she even sampled Jamaica’s most popular export, marijuana, but didn't like it!
After losing Milt, Joan focused her time on those she loved best, her children and grandchildren. She loved spending time with her granddaughters…teaching them to sing songs, and take walks in the woods, looking at nature. She spent plenty of time at cookouts and dinners with her kids. This is when Joan began her love of wine with “pinot noir and ice” being her favorite.
Though not looking for it, Joan was lucky to find love again with Frank Aruta. While only together for 15 years, Frank and Joan fit a LOT in those years. They were always taking trips to Ohio to see family, going on cruises and seeing shows in Sarasota with friends, and of course…golfing together. Joanie loved to dance with Frank; they could really cut the rug whether at local dinner dances or just in their own living room at home. Though she retired, Joan was still a nurse and kept up her certification in Florida. She would do free blood pressure readings for any who wanted them during the weekly Saturday club meetings. Joan even dressed up as a purple bumble bee and danced to Flying Purple People Eater for the club talent show.
Joan is survived by her children, Leslie (Rich Niemczura), Lesa, Chris (Jennifer Zimmerman) and Laurie; step-mother of Michelle (Eddie Olson); grandchildren, Hannah Vidmar (Bryan Taylor), Taylor Zimmerman and Haley Vidmar (Mike Martin); sister of Bette Burns and Bill Davis; sister-in-law of Alice Janet "AJ" Starkey and Nancy Zimmerman; and aunt of many nieces and nephews. She also leaves her beloved beau, Frank Aruta.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Ernie; dear second husband, Milt Thibeault; parents, Agnes and William “Hap” Davis; brothers-in-law, Bill Zimmerman and Skip Starkey; along with her many aunts and uncles.
Joan had such a zest for life. Her kids hope you can attend her Memorial to share funny stories and would love to hear your favorite memories of their mom. Family will receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, April 12, at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 38001 Euclid Ave., Willoughby.
