Johnny JS Churchill - January 21, 1940 - September 01, 2023

Departed: 09/01/2023 (OKLAHOMA CITY)
Obituary Preview: Johnny was born on January 21, 1940, the firstborn of two children born to the late John D. and Esther Jane Givens Churchill. His parents waited a long time before being blessed with the answer to their prayers, a son and a daughter, born 19 months apart. His birthplace was in Bolivar, Hardeman County, TN. When Johnny was two years old, the family relocated to Jackson, TN. He had a happy childhood living on Church Street and walking down the street to South Jackson Elementary School and playing in the neighborhood. Johnny and his friends had so much fun, skating and going from house to house. An adventurous youth, his mother began the practice of calling him when it was time to come home, yelling, “Johnny Boo” which is how he acquired that nickname and his friends began calling him by it. Also, in the summer, Johnny and his first cousins liked to return to Bolivar and visit with relatives. As he entered his teen years, he would work various jobs, including the then segregated Jackson Country Club where he worked as a caddy on the golf course. This is where Johnny was introduced to the game of golf and fell in love with the game, playing golf his entire life until failing health prevented active participation. Wherever he traveled, those golf clubs went with him via car or plane and he taught the game to many, including family members, friends and mere acquaintances. Johnny was the kind of person who never met a stranger and interacted with everyone. His door was open to all and most of the time, wasn’t locked. Friends knew they could just walk in and would be welcome; if there was coffee, help yourself and if he had cooked, you were welcome to have a plate. That was just our Johnny. Johnny accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized at Home Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson, TN under the pastorage of Rev. Timothy Grimes. The family would walk to church on Sunday because in those days, you didn’t get in a car and drive everywhere; walking was the major mode of transportation whenever possible. The 23rd Psalm was his favorite scripture and his mantra in times of trouble. He Heals the Brokenhearted – Psalm 147:3
Johnny’s secondary education continued at Merry High School on Tanyard Street, where he played football and was the co-captain of the football team. He graduated with the first class of the newly built Merry High on Lane Avenue in 1958. The school was across the street from his father’s barber shop and after school was let out for the day, of course, he and friends would go there to ask for money. His higher education was at Lane College in Jackson, TN where he graduated in 1964. Upon graduation, Johnny’s first professional position was teaching and coaching  Idlewild, Michigan. The schools of Idlewild and Baldwin, MI consolidated in 1965, forming Yates Township School, and he also served as interim principal. His tenure in Michigan was 1964 – 1972. While in Michigan, he coached a group of boys with whom he formed a lifelong bond and kept in touch, which was the beginning of his mentoring of young people. Some were helped to the extent that they commented “he was the only father I ever knew.” Later in life, this group of students honored Johnny by giving him an all-expenses paid trip to Idlewild, MI where they had a golf tournament, a picnic and a banquet in his honor, and he was presented with a plaque proclaiming him “The Man of the Century” among other accolades. It was in Idlewild, MI that Johnny met and married his wife, Annie, and they were happily married until her untimely death in 1970.
After moving to Chattanooga, he married Albertine Churchill (deceased), and later Linda Churchill Roberts. Johnny relocated to Chattanooga, TN in 1974 where he was head basketball coach at Chattanooga City High from 1974 - 1980; he also served as football coach and girl’s track coach, and took them to track meets as far away as Memphis, TN. He taught and coached at Riverside High School from 1980 – 1982, coached basketball, football, Boys & Girls Track & Field. Johnny relocated to Oklahoma City, OK in 1982 where he accepted a position at Southeast High School and from 1982 – 1990 was Assistant Coach of Football, Track and Boys Basketball. His tenure at Northwest Classen was 1990 – 2002 where he taught and was Head Boys Track Coach and Assistant Coach for Football, Boys and Girls Basketball. After an illustrious career of instructing and mentoring young people, Johnny retired in 2002, and he received a wonderful and heartwarming program spearheaded
by present and former students. Johnny’s retirement years were spent enjoying golf, travel, visiting with family and friends and substitute teaching as he desired. He also brought his mother to Oklahoma to live with him for an extended period of time. When his health declined, he was cared for by his devoted, faithful and loving daughter, LaDana with the assistance of Chazz Lane, who he looked upon as a son. Phillip Ingersoll, his faithful and loyal friend, was always there for Johnny and the family. The light of Johnny Churchill came to an end on September 1, 2023. He passed away peacefully at home with his daughter, LaDana and his steadfast friend, Phil with him. Preceding him in death are his parents and his half-sister, Geneva Gatlin of Bolivar TN. Left to cherish many loving memories are his children: Frankie Churchill (Jeanett) of Houston, TX; Vicki Rose (David) of Memphis, TN; Tamatha Borkcom (Jon) of Memphis TN; Andre Fox (Cindy) of Toledo, OH; Tamarya Webb (Al) of Melbourne, FL; La’Dana Churchill (Chazz Lane, special friend), of OKC, OK. His loving sister, Winnie Churchill Walker of Jackson, TN; a special 1st cousin, Precious Jenkins of
Cleveland, OH; Sixteen grandchildren whom he loved dearly and 13 greatgrandchildren. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear and special friends.
To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. A time to be born, and a time to die ……………………. Ecclesiaste
