Obituary Preview: DEBORAH J. PRECH
Deborah J. Prech of North Royalton, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2024. Deborah was born on December 25th, 1950 to the late Steve and Katherine Rosala. She was the beloved wife of David and loving mother of her rescue puppy Louis. She was the dear sister of Craig (Brenda), Wayne (Deborah), and Faith McNamara (John); loved sister-in-law of Mary (David), Laura (Darrell) and Debra Rosala; cherished aunt of Brian, Brandon, Ryan, Lindsey and Luke. Deborah will be remembered as a true gift from God, having been born on Christmas Day. She touched everyone who knew her with her loving, kind and gentle spirit. She was always doing for others. When you received a gift from Deborah it would probably be something she made. A knitted scarf or hat or maybe a personal watercolor painting. She was an amazingly talented artist and she loved to knit and crochet.
Deborah loved the furry, four-legged members of her family. They brought her so much joy.
A very special thank you to Deborah’s wonderful, supportive friends from her Bible study group Women of Worship, and Knit Wits Knitting Club.
All services are private.
Deborah would greatly appreciate any donations to be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.

SUSAN M. KEANE - February 05, 1946 - April 30, 2024

Departed: 04/30/2024 (Lakewood)
Obituary Preview: In loving memory of Susan M. Keane (nee Kenney), aged 78, whose vibrant spirit touched the lives of many, departed peacefully from this world on April 30, 2024. Beloved wife of the late Thomas A. Jr. loving mother of Kelley Drumm (John), Maureen Starner (Mike) and Katie Keane; grandmother of Thomas Drumm and Samantha Hildebrand (Dustin); great grandmother of Grady and Asher; dear sister of Barbara Kolezynski (Richard) and William E. Kenney III.
Sue's journey in life was marked by dedication and a passion for serving others. Her pursuit of nursing at Mercy College of Ohio’s Nursing School in Toledo reflected her innate desire to care for those in need. This commitment only deepened when she married her soulmate, Tim, and welcomed three daughters into her life, whom she adored beyond measure.
Sue's compassion and expertise touched countless lives, evident from her days as Head Nurse of Surgery at Fairview Hospital, as well as throughout her esteemed career as an operating nurse. Her daughters fondly remember their time as Candy Stripers at Fairview Hospital, a testament to Sue's ability to instill a sense of service and empathy in those around her. Even in her brief stint as an ER nurse and as a clinical consultant for Kaiser's IT department, Sue’s passion for helping others remained unshakeable. Near the end of her career she traveled across the country as a consultant, to lend her expertise on operating room procedures to small and rural hospitals.
A connoisseur of Diet Coke, although never with ice, Sue delighted in her weekly bridge groups and dining out with her beloved friends. Her passion for reading allowed her another opportunity to connect with her friends in her book club. Rarely did Sue turn down a social engagement.
Sue's love knew no bounds, especially for her family. She leaves behind her daughters Kelley Drumm (John), Maureen Starner (Mike), and Katie Keane, all of whom were her favorite. She adored them beyond measure. Sue took great joy in her grandchildren, Thomas Drumm and Samantha Hildebrand (Dustin), and reveled in the wonder of her great-grandchildren, Grady and Asher. Sue's family was her pride and joy, the center of her universe.
Sue was a proud graduate of Beaumont High School and an active alumni, meeting regularly for lunch with her classmates. She was also a member of St. Ignatius’ alumni spouse group, actively participating in their events throughout the year.
A trailblazer in her own right, Sue pursued her dream of attaining a bachelor's degree while juggling the responsibilities of full-time work and motherhood. Her determination led her to graduate with honors from David N. Myers University (formerly Dyke College), a testament to her resolve, motivation, and competitive spirit to achieve her bachelor’s degree before her daughters.
Sue's professional achievements were complemented by her steadfast commitment to her community. She volunteered as a Red Coat at Playhouse Square, Airport Ambassador at Cleveland Hopkins Airport, and donated 18 gallons of blood and platelets to the Red Cross during her lifetime, impacting over 450 lives.
An unwavering pillar of support for her friends and family, Sue's kindness knew no bounds. Affectionately known as "Suber" to many, her generosity and warmth endeared her to all who had the privilege of knowing her. Whether it was driving someone to the airport at the crack of dawn or offering a listening ear, Sue's selflessness left an indelible mark on those around her. She was always there for those in need.
A proud Clevelander through and through, Sue's love for her city was noteworthy. From impromptu tours of Cleveland if you were in her car, to cheering on her favorite sports teams (Indians, Ohio State Buckeyes, Browns, and Cavs in that order), her enthusiasm was infectious and her allegiance enduring through triumphs and tribulations.
Though Sue may have left this world, her spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her, as well as the countless lives she touched. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten, her legacy of love and laughter enduring through the ages. Until we meet again, Sue, may your adventurous spirit continue to guide us, and may your legacy of love and kindness endure for generations to come. As she would say when she left her friends…Ok, Kiddo, see you next time!

SR. ANTOINETTE CAMPANELLA, CSJ - August 05, 1925 - April 06, 2024

Departed: 04/06/2024 (Lakewood)
Obituary Preview: Sister Antoinette (Toni) Campanella (formerly Sister Concetta) age 98, died peacefully on April 6, 2024 at St. Joseph Center in Cleveland. Daughter of the late Steven and Antoinette Cuoco Campanella, she was also preceded in death by her brothers Gregory, James, Julius and Frank, and her sister Elizabeth DiRienzo. An elementary teacher for over 50 years, Sr. Antoinette enjoyed her final 22 years of ministry at St. Bridget School in Parma. A Sister of St. Joseph for 70 years, she will be greatly missed by her Sisters and Associates in community, by her nieces Annette Gorris and Judy Puchmeyer, and many great-nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Brendan Church, 4242 Brendan Lane, North Olmsted, on Friday, April 12 at 10:30 AM, preceded by visitation beginning at 9:45 in the church. Arrangements by McGorray-Hanna Funeral Homes where a full obituary can be found on the website at www.mcgorray-hanna.com
Antoinette, the youngest of six children, was born in Cleveland to Steven and Antoinette Cuoco Campanella in 1925. She was named after her mother, who died the same day of her birth. Antoinette attended St. Ignatius elementary school and went to high school at St. Joseph Academy. After graduating in 1944, she stayed home and took care of her father because by then, her brothers and sister were all married.
Sister Timothy Ryan had been Antoinette’s sixth grade teacher and became a great influence in her life. By then, Sr. Timothy was at St. Rose School, and she recommended that Antoinette be a substitute teacher. When she was needed, Antoinette was always careful to leave home after her father left for work and to be home with supper on the table when he returned.
During these years, Antoinette felt a call to become a sister and would occasionally mention this to her father. She was torn between taking care of him and entering the convent. When she spoke to a priest about this, he advised her to continue taking care of her father and in time, he would let her go. Sometime later, out of the blue, Antoinette’s father asked her if she still wanted to enter the convent. When she replied yes, he finally said okay, thinking she would return home in a few weeks. Needless to say, that never happened. In 1950, at the age of 24, Antoinette entered the Sisters of St. Joseph and received the religious name, Sister Concetta.
Antoinette received a BSE from St. John College in 1962. She took additional courses over the years at Western Reserve University, Kent State University, and the University of Notre Dame. During her first assignment with third graders at St. Clement (1952-61), Antoinette discovered she loved teaching. She enjoyed the children and was well liked in return by the students, their parents, and other teachers. Her other teaching assignments were: St. Anthony, Parma (1961-68); St. Vincent de Paul (1968-69); St. Mary, Olmsted Falls (1969-81), where she was teacher then principal; and St. Bridget (1981-2003), where she formed a lasting friendship with Sr. Alice Rooney.
In 2003, Antoinette retired from teaching and moved to St. Joseph Village where she remained involved in the life of the community. She always loved art and was quite gifted and now had time to develop and share her creations. Among her many talents were making all-occasion cards, which she sold, and knitting, crocheting, calligraphy, and providing artwork for whoever needed it. Antoinette also volunteered with the Alumnae at St. Joseph Academy and tutored at Seeds of Literacy for six years.
For enjoyment, Antoinette liked travelling in the States and across Europe and made yearly trips to Florida, usually with Sisters Alice, Delphine and Dorothy. She cherished the memories of the sisters at St. Rose’s where she substituted, her classmates in community, the many people she met and worked with over the years, and the treasured time she spent with family. Daily Eucharist was an important part of her life, as well as reflecting on Scripture. During an interview in her later years, Antoinette expressed that God had been very good to her throughout her life and that she was always grateful for her good health. Her daily thought was to make the world a better place and that she continue to be faithful to God and to her commitment as a Sister of St. Joseph. She especially liked the quote “What you are is God’s gift to you; what you make of yourself is your gift to God.”
Gracious God, we are thankful for the life of our Sister Antoinette, and we rejoice as she enters into the fullness of Your love.

SR. HOPE GREENER, CSJ - May 03, 1928 - March 15, 2024

Departed: 03/15/2024 (Lakewood)
Obituary Preview: Hope Greener was the youngest of three children born to Leo and Geraldine Cain Greener, in Cleveland, Ohio. She grew up in a loving family and attended St. Aloysius Parish where she formed many friendships. While in elementary school there, she took piano lessons from Sister Cecelia Agnes Gagan, who was a great influence in her life and eventually led her to the Sisters of St. Joseph. She attended Ursuline Academy for high school, graduating in 1945.
Although the seed of a religious vocation had already been planted, Hope decided to attend Kent State University studying journalism. After two years Hope entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, receiving the habit and religious name, Sister Mary of the Angels, in August 1948. She received a BSE from St. John College, a master’s in library science from Western Reserve University, and a master’s in sacred doctrine from St. Mary’s of Notre Dame.
Hope’s teaching ministry took place in the following schools: St Agnes (1949-50), where she began the first kindergarten; St. Thomas Aquinas (1950-57); St. Joseph, Canton (1957-58); and St. Clement (1958-59). From 1959-76 she served at St. Joseph Academy - seven years as librarian, and ten teaching theology.
The focus of Hope’s ministry took a different direction in 1976 when she and Sister Mary Gallagher opened the St. Joseph House of Prayer at West 28 th and Franklin Blvd. At the same time, she was offering retreats and spiritual direction at the Jesuit Retreat House in Parma (1976-81).
In 1981, Hope became the founder and director of Providence House, a crisis nursery for infants and toddlers on the west side of Cleveland. This was the highlight of her various ministries. The name grew out of Hope’s strong belief in divine providence. It began as a day care center for three or four children under age five whose mothers were living at a women’s shelter. In 1983, with the help of a grant, Hope hired her first staff person, and they were able to keep some children overnight. Since its inception, Providence House has continued to expand and to offer free emergency shelter to children, newborn through 12 years old, actively living in crisis situations. They have cared for more than 15,000 children and families providing support through a holistic integrated program focused on family preservation. By 1992, feeling that Providence House was secure and in capable hands, Hope decided to pass on this ministry to others. She remained involved with public relations and fundraising her entire life. In October of 2023, Providence House opened an East Campus, called Hope’s House, in her honor.
From 1992-94 Hope ministered at Fontbonne Home in Bay Village, and then was asked to serve as Associate Director of Human Services for the CSJ Community (1994-2000).
Anyone who knew Hope experienced her love for dogs and can recall her trusty companions Midnight, Annie, and Beauty. Midnight was with her all through her days at Providence House and helped many children learn to love. When Hope (and Beauty) moved to St. Joseph Village in 1998 she continued to serve in a variety of ways: doing computer input for the Seeds of Literacy Adult Reading Program; serving on the Palliative Care Interdisciplinary Team at Community Health Partners in Lorain; organizing the library in St. Joseph Hall; driving sisters and visitors needing to get to and from the airport; working at the registration desk for River’s Edge events; crocheting for numerous non-profit organizations, etc. Hope was also an avid reader.
Hope was an active member of St. Peter Parish for many years. She found this worshipping community to be a tremendous source of support and an amazing example of a faith group committed to service. Hope was forever grateful for her many friends, her good health, and for the children she always loved to serve. As to Hope’s dreams for our CSJ future, she trusted that no matter what the changes, we will continue to serve “the dear neighbor”. She felt that the Spirit is leading us toward a new expression of religious life which will be meaningful for generations to come.
Gracious God, we are thankful for the life of our Sister Hope, and we rejoice as she enters the fullness of Your love.
