Obituary Preview: Barbara Rose Watley Wooten was born on July 2, 1943 in Kelly Louisiana to the late Clareither Burton Wooten and J.C. Wooten.  She had two sisters (Eunice Gray and husband Elijah Gray and Peakola Nelson who preceded her in death and husband Royal Nelson who also preceded her in death) and one brother James Wooten and wife, Mary Wooten).
Barbara was an astute student who enjoyed writing.  Along with having a wonderful personality that everyone admired in school, she was also very beautiful and won school pageants at her H.S., (Carroll High).  She moved to Denver Colorado and later enrolled in college to study journalism in San Diego California.  Barbara loved poetry and had written hundreds of unpublished poems. She authored a book “The Hidden Tears of My Heart” that has been the center of many book club meetings.  She has also written PSAs for local radio stations in her hometown of Monroe Louisiana. She especially loved writing literature for her favorite political candidates.
Above all, Barbara’s love for God and desire to be with him one day guided her throughout her life.  She was taught the gospel of Christ while in San Diego California and soon was baptized becoming a member of the church of Christ.  She was a member of the King Oaks Church of Christ as well as Marx Street Church of Christ, presently known as Parkview Church of Christ.  While she was able, no matter where she lived, you could always find her on a church pew each Sunday morning Sunday night and Wednesday night.  She so much enjoyed holding Bible studies, attending revivals and traveling with her brothers and sisters in Christ to lectureships.
She had a passion for cooking and would many times cook and clean house for seniors who were in need.  She believed in waking early to make sure her children and grandchildren had a nice breakfast cooked for them. People in her community would often times come by to get some of her delicious pralines, a talent she picked up during her brief visit to New Orleans.  She was very crafty and would make hats, shawls and crafts for her family members and friends.
Barbara Watley loved family and had 8 children, Johnathan Adams of Virginia, Delia R. Watley of Texas, Robert L. Meeks of Arkansas, Henry L. Cooper of Texas, Dewayne Wooten of Louisiana, James Carter of Texas, Rueben Watley of Louisiana and Saranne Lyons (deceased).  13 grandchildren, Michael, Artisha, LaBradford, Henry Jr., Johnathan Jr., Dalvin, Makia, Maniah, Elias, Jamison, Gerald, Christopher and Vincent, as well as 13 great grandchildren.  She also had 4 nieces, Trevena, Eulunda, Evette Catrina, Joyce, and special godchild Valencia, along with 6 nephews, Trent, Jimmy, Bruce, Leroy, Alvin, Hubert and Patrick.

Deborah, also known as Niecy, attended Tippit Elementary. She later attended Riser and graduated from West Monroe High School. She later met Ricky Morris with whom she had 3 beautiful children. Niecy was a strong, smart, and independent. She spent her pass years listening to music, cooking soul food, shopping, and spending time with her family.
Deborah was preceded in death by her mother, Hattie Lee Pickens and father, Henry Hayes.
Her beautiful life will forever be cherished by: her children, Monisha Morris-Alexander (John Alexander Jr.);  Dominique Pickens; and Delandel Pickens (Lakeisha Pickens). She also leaves behind a bonus daughter, Joann Thompson; her siblings, Otis Pickens, Connie Pickens, John Pickens, Benard Pickens, Angela Pickens, and the late Kenneth Pickens.

Obituary Preview: Grace Wiggins Mitchell (nee Kelly) lived a life full of love for family, friends, and God almighty. A nurse by trade, she provided care for others as needed, while asking little in return. She was imbued with a spirit of discernment and charisma; she was beloved by all who were blessed to make her acquaintance. The name Grace is derived from the Latin word gratus, which means ‘pleasing’, ‘beloved’, or ‘favorable.’ She was born Grace Nell Kelly to Bob and Leader Kelly (nee Jones) on December 17th, 1940, in Farmerville, Louisiana. On April 16th, 2022, God decided it was time to call Grace home and she went to see her heavenly father, surrounded by her family and in the comfort of her own home. Her passing has left a void that will never be filled but a legacy that will live on forever. She was and always will be immensely treasured. She married Robert Wiggins, Sr in 1963, raising seven children, and they loved each other until his death in 1992. Her family was her everything and she provided for and took care of them without fail, even if it meant neglecting her own needs. She had an affinity for complex jigsaw puzzles, playing word games and sewing. She was a kind, generous and compassionate soul. She made her whole family laugh with her acerbic wit and her homespun sayings. Even when she spoke in anger, she did so in a way that prompted smiles upon reflecting on her transitory displeasure. She had an angelic voice and would often sing “There’s A Leak in This Old Building” or “Lord Don’t Move That Mountain.” She was a staunch advocate for education and pushed her children to gain as much knowledge as possible. As a testament to that, she pursued and attained her nursing degree in 1984, while raising a family and taking care of a household. She had an immense vocabulary and though she was subtle about it, she would not hesitate to “help” when a word was mispronounced or used incorrectly in a sentence. She is survived by her children, Joseph B. Kelly, Debbie C. Wright (nee Kelly), Wanda R. Jackson, (nee Kelly), Michael W. Kelly, Kerry M. Wiggins, Robert L Wiggins, Jr., Teresa L Wiggins, her sisters Faye Ruth Dixon, June Kelly Carpenter, Ruthell Kelly Pugh, a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Judy was born on January 31, 1944 in Columbia, La.to her late parents Ethel and Timothy Cassels. She graduated from Columbia High School and began her life as a stay at home mother of one girl and three boys. She was a faithful member of Sandy Bayou Baptist Church in Caldwell Parish. She was married to Tommy B. “Pat” McKee, an avid commercial fisherman, farmer, and father, who passed from this life on June 16th, 1995. She began her work life as a private sitter and at LaSavilla Blue Jean Factory in Caldwell Parish.
Judy loved her garden and planted flowers all seasons of the year. Her favorites were yellow roses, sweet olives, and pink azaleas. Her free time was spent tending her flowers, doing yard work, and caring for her four children. She was known by her closest friends as “Jooty Booty” and was a calm, loving spirit with a feisty attitude.
She was preceded in death by her husband Tommy “Pat” McKee, mother Ethel Cassels, father Timothy Cassels, and Grandmother Alice Grant who raised her for the majority of her life after losing her mother at the age of 4. Those left to cherish her memory are her sons Michael McKee and wife Mindy of LaSalle Parish, Jeff Mckee and wife Cindy of Caldwell Parish, Chris McKee and wife Ashlie of Caldwell Parish, and daughter Donna and husband Bobby Johnson of Caldwell Parish. She is also survived by 17 grandkids and 17 great-grandchildren.

Obituary Preview: The days and nights had been long and the burden I had borne seemed heavier than I could bear; and then it lifted. But someone took it to God in prayer and asked for the easing of the load, and God in his infinite wisdom and compassion stepped down and removed it from me.
On Palm Sunday, April 10, 2022, at Stoney Brook Memory Care Home, the death angel came and bore the spirit of Brother John Edward Harrell away to glory land where he is free from sickness, sorrow, pain, and death.
At an early age, Brother Harrell united with the Cedar Grove Baptist Church, where he remained a loyal member to his death. While living in Milwaukee, he joined the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, where he was an active member.
He graduated from Union Central High School in 1965. He moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and obtained his Associate degree in Electronics from M.A.T.C. Later, he obtained his real estate broker license; but primarily, his career consisted of working as an assistant manager for Kohl’s Food Stores.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathaniel and Leneva Harrell; and one sister, Linda Harrell, and one brother, Michael Harrell.
His loving memories will be cherished by his two children from a previous marriage, Jonathan and Jennifer Harrell, both of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; two brothers, James Harrell of Grayson, Louisiana; and Herman Harrell of Franklin, Wisconsin; two sisters, Dianne Bennett of Monroe, Louisiana; and Theresa (Ralph) Engl of Grayson, Louisiana; one aunt, Viola Riser Hawkins of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; one uncle, Andy Riser of Grayson, Louisiana; two special aunts, Willie Bea Riser and Alice Riser; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

He attended Carroll Junior High and later went on the graduate from The Wossman High School Class of 2019. While attending high school, Joseph became physically ill unexpectedly. Although Joseph faced this serious health issue, he never let that stop him from living a joyous life. For instance, he was a natural born musician who played all sorts of eclectic musical instruments.
Joseph aspired to be a well-known rap artist someday. He was so multitalented that he almost obtained a record deal. He was truly our shining star.

Dr. Lawrence R. Martin, Sr. - September 04, 1935 - March 07, 2022

The Book of Life opened for Dr. Lawrence R. Martin, Sr. on September 4, 1935 in Archie, LA to the late Dr. B.F. Martin and the late Yvonne Martin.  He was reared by his grandparents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Martin. On Monday, March 7, 2022, in West Monroe, Louisiana, Pastor Martin transitioned from labor to reward.
Pastor Martin is preceded in death by: Grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Martin, Sr.; mother, Yvonne Martin; father, B. F. Martin.
Pastor Martin confessed Christ at an early age at Evergreen Baptist Church in Archie, LA. After completion of his secondary education, Pastor Martin enrolled in Grambling State University and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Social Studies. He later attended Morehouse School of Religion at the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC), Atlanta, Georgia, and attained his Master of Divinity. In 1993, he received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from the United Theological Seminary and Bible College, Monroe, Louisiana. In 2001, Pastor Martin received his Doctor of Divinity Inter-Baptist Theological Seminary, Shreveport, Louisiana.
In 1964, Pastor Martin met and married the love of his life, Barbara Jean Thompson, of New Iberia. To this union, three children were born, Lawrence II, Perry and Chantel.
Professionally, Dr. Lawrence Martin was an educator in the public school system. He was an instructor at Jonesville Consolidated High School and Carroll High School. He gained the reputation for his perception, understanding, and his amazing vocabulary.
As a young man, Pastor Martin took up the crusade as a Civil Rights activist. He participated in numerous marches and demonstrations throughout the South. He was the only activist known from this area to have marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Pastor Martin continued being a fighter for the rights of people his entire life. He worked tirelessly to ensure voter education and engagement of the community he served.
Dr. Lawrence R. Martin is the son of a minister, the brother of three ministers, and the nephew of a minister. Born into a prestigious bloodline of ministry, it wasn’t long before he accepted the call to preach the gospel himself. Pastor Martin began his preaching career while attending Grambling State University.
By God’s divine will, Pastor Martin sustained a life complete with an abundance of distinguished experiences as a preacher, instructor, lecturer, moderator, and teacher. Pastor Martin was a God sent man with a rich heritage of religious experiences. The religious experiences that enhanced his life include: Pastor, Springfield Baptist Church in Gibsland, Louisiana; Pastor, Shiloh Baptist Church in Homer, Louisiana; President and Moderator, Springville M. and E. Association; Provost, United Theological Seminary and Bible College; Bible Lecturer, Tenth District Association; Secretary, GumSpring Association; Dean and Lecturer,  GumSpring Congress of Christian Education; Twin Cities Ministerial Union; and Louisiana Baptist State Convention and National Convention. The past forty-seven years, Dr. Martin faithfully shepherded God’s people as Pastor of the Trenton Baptist Church, West Monroe, LA.
Pastor Martin was a philanthropic, unpretentious servant who continuously tended to the needs of his church and community. His Motto was “Not for myself, but for others”.  Dr. Martin's esteemed service was been recognized by many. His awards and accreditations include: Who's Who Among Black Americans; Louisiana Bicentennial Commission-Certificate of Appreciation; Political Allies Association Awards- Outstanding Service, Monroe City Education Association - Charter Member and Past President, Ouachita Chapter NAACP - Member, OIC of Ouachita Parish -  Job Counselor, U.S. House of Representatives - Monroe, LA District Representatives, United States Civil Service Commission - Voting Rights Examiner, Hall of Fame - Jerusalem Baptist Church, Calhoun, Louisiana, West Monroe Christian Community-Legacy Award, Martin Luther King Foundation - MLK Pacesetters Award, Tenth District Association- Living Legend Award, Missionary – North American Mission Board; Springfield Baptist Church - Service Award, Thirty-Second Degree Mason and community action award. During his tenure as pastor of Trenton Baptist Church, seven ministers were called to the ministry. He ordained several deacons. Pastor Martin had an unselfish love for his church, especially the youth department. In his office, there was always a candy dish full of candy waiting on them every Sunday. He was proud to grant both- young and old- opportunities to learn and grow, spiritually, academically and socially. Pastor taught and preached the uncompromising Gospel in and out of season. A historian in his own right, he frequently expounded beyond the ordinary and provided additional historical context for further biblical understanding and application. Dr. Martin became almost iconic for one of his signature sayings when professing the word of God, “I know I’m right about it.”
One of the greatest joys of Lawrence’s life was being “Paw Paw”. He loved his grandchildren. He was blessed to have baptized all his grandchildren, as they professed Jesus Christ as their Savior.
Dr. Lawrence Raymond Martin, Sr. leaves to cherish his legacy and his memories: beloved wife of fifty-eight years, Barbara; Children: Lawrence Ray II (Kimberly) of Stafford, TX, Perry of Monroe, LA and Chantel (Julius) of Spring, TX; Grandchildren: DeVonte’, Austin, Paris, Ryan and Justin; one great-grandson, Braxton; Brothers, Donald Martin, B J Martin (Barbara), Kenneth Martin (Iris); and a sister, Veroncia Thomas (Winfred). Katherine was born July 12, 1986, in Monroe, Louisiana to Brenda Gradick and Larry Gradick, Sr. She enjoyed spending her days with her children. Some hobbies of hers are cooking and spending time in her garden. She would always say “I’m a bomb in the kitchen.” She found the fact that she growing her own veggies was even better and it added more flavor. Her last few days, she was surrounded by family and God knew she needed that. She spent a lot of time with her granddaughter, and she loved every minute of it.
Katherine is survived by her children, Cheyanne Gradick (boyfriend, Tobias Greely); David Chavers, Nicholas Gradick, James Stephenson, Monica Stephenson, and Rosalie Stephenson; bonus-daughter, Aiden Lee; grand-daughter, Evelina Greely; her mother, Brenda Kay Gradick; five brothers, Larry Gradick, Jr. (Maria Conner), William Manning, Elmer Gradick (Milenda Gradick), Henry Gradick (Jessica Gradick), and Clinton Gradick; three sisters, Peggie Wallace (fiancé, Micheal Lemmerman), Bethal Williams (Jimmy Williams), and Candy Crafts (Mixon Crafts, Sr.); and many nieces and nephews.
She was a kind soul. Everywhere she went, she made friends – a village of them.
Katherine was preceded in death by her father, Larry Gradick, Sr., sister, Rosa Grayton; uncles, aunts, and all four of her grandparents.
Katherine will definitely be remembered by her beautiful smile and soul.

Leon was a skilled car care attended where he would wash, wax, and buff cars at Car Wash West in West Monroe. After Car Wash West, he worked at Coors Beer RC company, BFI, IRG, Monroe Transit, Family Dollar, Service Master and he remained a faithful worker at Monroe City Schools as the bus Driver of Bus 220.

As a child, she excelled in school and participated in many extracurricular events, her favorite being a flag girl for Block High School in Jonesville, LA where she graduated in 1990. She went on from there to continue her studies at Grambling State University (Grambling, Louisiana). Later, Rica joined the United States Air Force (from January 1993 – April 1996) and received an honorable discharge. Rica and her former husband, Dale Mason were married for 26 years and went on to have two beautiful children, daughter DeVan Alexus-Nicole, and her son, Devin Dionel and stepson, Seandale. In addition to being a dedicated and loving mother, throughout her entire life, Rica held an unwavering faith in God, which she shared with those who surrounded her. She loved her affiliation with women’s ministry and the Lord used Rica in a powerful way to touch the lives of every person she encountered. It has been said, “If Rica considered you her friend, you were friends forever.”
Rica exuded the light and love of Christ with her gentle discerning spirit and contagious love for the Lord, she was involved in multiple ministries and was sought after to speak at events. Her humble and gentle spirit resulted in many either coming to Christ or maturing in Him. She made a difference in the lives of all who knew her.
Rica is not only survived by her parents, Larry and Earline McKennery, but also by her loving sisters, Natasha and Kayshon,her children as mentioned above and her niece, Jada. In honoring Rica, let’s not only remember her for her love for the Lord, but try to live in accordance with one of her beloved scriptures Philippians 4:4-8: “Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say rejoice. She had a heart of gold but also expressed what was on her mind. No matter what challenges she faced, she believed in the power of God’s word.

As a teenager, she joined Unity Church of God in Christ under the leadership of her brother, the late Superintendent Donald Louis. As the church transitioned, she attended Spirit of Deliverance Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Elder Ronald Green. She remained a faithful member at Spirit of Deliverance Church of God in Christ until her calling home.
Angela’s professional career included being a dedicated employee at EA Conway Hospital and Chase Bank. She also spent many years volunteering in her local community. She was an avid animal lover and butterfly enthusiast, serving as a surrogate mother to many lost pets throughout the years. Her loving and giving spirit will truly be missed.
Angela’s love of music and Christ inspired her lifelong music ministry. For many years, she served as the choir director at Unity Church of God in Christ. She also served as president and choir director of Monroe District Choir. She was a member of Louisiana First Jurisdiction Choir under of the leadership of the late Bishop Roy L. H. Winbush. Angela’s musical journey also include singing with One Body of Christ under the direction of her first cousin, David Starr, and Minister to My Spirit Ministries under the direction of Martavius Mims.
Affectionately called Angie Boo, she was known to be outspoken and honest. She would “shoot it straight from the hip” and spared no words when interacting with her family and friends. She was always the one to call on when someone needed honest advice filled with love and care.
Although Angela did not have a child of her own, she absolutely loved children. Throughout her life, she served as godmother to more children than we could name. Her family and friends will cherish all the memories of their Angie Boo for many years to come.
Angela was preceded in death by her mother, Evangelist Harriet Warren Louis; her father, Deacon Hilton Louis, Sr.; her three brothers, Charles Ray Louis, Superintendent Donald Ray Louis, and Elder Hilton Louis, Jr.; her nephew, Elder Hilton Christopher Louis; and her sister-in-law, Evangelist Shirley Louis.

Though he wore many hats and had a knack for many things, his true passion and talent was selling cars.
