Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary website, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who need to know about the funeral or memorial service. They can also help to notify people who may not have been aware of the person's passing.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, a close friend or colleague may also write an obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, as well as any charitable donations or memorials in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or website it will be published on. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary websites and funeral homes allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased with the obituary. This can help to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful to those who read it.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

You can usually submit an obituary to a newspaper by contacting their obituary department directly. They will provide you with guidelines on what information to include and how to format the text. You may also need to provide proof of death, such as a death certificate.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or website. Some publications may charge by the word or line, while others may offer package deals that include additional services like online hosting or guest book features.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance, often as part of their estate planning or end-of-life preparations. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told in your own words.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. It's often used when a full obituary is not possible or desired.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing someone's death, while a eulogy is a spoken tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service. A eulogy is typically more personal and emotional than an obituary.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Yes, many people choose to include humorous anecdotes or quotes in an obituary to reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased. This can help to celebrate their life and bring comfort to those who are grieving.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or websites that specialize in historical records. You may also contact local libraries or genealogical societies for assistance.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication or website where the obituary was published. Some may allow corrections or updates, while others may not. It's best to check with them directly.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

In some cases, families may choose to keep an obituary private due to personal or security concerns. This can usually be arranged with the funeral home or publication.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes, many people choose to include meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems in an obituary to reflect the personality or interests of the deceased.

How do I notify social media platforms about someone's passing?
