Neil O'Hara - December 31, 1953 - February 23, 2023

Departed: 02/23/2023 (Windsor)
Obituary Preview: Neil E O’Hara, 69, of Windsor, CO, passed away on February 23, 2023, after battling Cancer for the last 14 months. Neil was born on December 31, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York.  Having a birthday on New Year’s Eve, he would always say the world celebrated his birthday with him.  At age 3, Neil moved to the North Shore of Long Island—Northport, New York.  He attended Northport High School and later graduated from Adelphi University in the Village of Garden City, New York.
In high school, Neil was a gifted athlete playing 3 sports competitively—basketball, soccer and baseball—and had been referred to as Northport’s “all-purpose redhead”.  In soccer, Neil helped his team to win the 1971 New York State Championship.  Most notably, Neil was a standout baseball player.  He played both outfield and infield at second base, when not on the mound at pitcher.  Neil received the honors of MVP and League Batting Champion with a .397 average in 1972.  He was voted to All League, All Star Team for each of his 4 years in High School.  By the close of Neil’s senior year, he was presented with opportunities to play for either the Kansas City Royals or St. Louis Cardinal minor leagues or accept a baseball scholarship to Clemson or Adelphi.
Neil ultimately chose to attend and play baseball for Adelphi University.  His collegiate achievements included: Batting Champion in 1973, Team Captain in 1975 and 1976, and earning All Star status for each of his 4 years.  In 1976, Neil graduated from Adelphi University with a Bachelor of Science Degree.
After college, Neil discovered his love for aerospace which took him from NY to TX, then to CA and ultimately landed in CO.  There wasn’t an airplane or helicopter model Neil didn’t know and loved to share his knowledge with anyone who asked.  For the last 20 years, Neil served as VP of Marketing and Sales for Hutchinson Aerospace.
Along with his love of aerospace, Neil also loved spending time with his family, travel, watching sports, and of course golfing.  Neil and his wife Marci were fortunate to move to CO 3 years ago to live on a golf course and be closer to family.  Neil and Marci traveled the past few years, touring through Europe, Greece, Panama, and a cruise along the US East Coast. There wasn’t a NY Yankees, Dallas Cowboys or Notre Dame game Neil didn’t miss.
He is survived by his wife Marci of 33 years, and children: Shawn O’Hara (Brandi) of Keller, TX; Kellie Huggins (Rusty) of Springtown, TX; Kristin Hammel (Evan) of Littleton, CO; and Danielle Newhart (Joe) of Fort Collins, CO; along with his mother Rita O’Hara of Northport, NY and brothers Kevin O’Hara (Mary) and Allen O’Hara.  Neil was born to be Pop-Pop to his grandkids, which was probably his favorite title - Tyler, Reagan, Brecken, Kennaddie and Gwyneth will all miss his fun spirit and silliness.

Thomas S Brooks - January 12, 1932 - February 02, 2023

Departed: 02/02/2023 (Windsor)
Obituary Preview: Saratoga resident Stan Brooks passed away peacefully in Denver on February 2, 2023, after a brief illness, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife Claire, his four children and six grandchildren, who all miss him deeply. Thomas Stanley Brooks was born in Rawlins in 1932 and spent his boyhood in PARCO-Sinclair where his parents J.G. Brooks and Adele Whatley lived along with his older sister Betty. His mother and father met in Breckenridge, Colorado, where Stan’s grandfather Ezra Brooks was a successful mining engineer, and his mother’s family were prominent local landowners. Stan’s Brooks paternal ancestors were English hard rock miners from North Devon and later the Lake District, before emigrating to America. His maternal uncle Barney Whatley was a prominent lawyer in Colorado and a good friend of U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice, Hugo Black. Stan’s father, J.G. Brooks worked for the refinery in Sinclair for over 30 years. From an early age Stan excelled in his studies, and he enjoyed debate and theatre at Rawlins High School, graduating in 1950. Stan attended the University of Wyoming from 1950-1954 (Major in Theatre, Minor in French), where he was a widely celebrated actor in the theatre department and also studied French. During his years at UW, Stan played leading roles in major Shakespearean productions as well as the title role in “Peer Gynt.” During his senior year at UW, Stan was Wyoming’s candidate for the Rhodes scholarship. He was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to continue his French language studies in France, where he lived for two years. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1956-58, after which he passed the demanding written and oral exams to enter the U.S. Foreign Service, beginning his career as a U.S. diplomat in December 1958. Stan’s first assignment was at the American Embassy in Vientiane, Laos where he met his wife Claire, a young woman from Boston who was working for the US Agency for International Development. U.S. Secretary of State Dean Acheson presented Stan with a Meritorious Service Award for his bravery in securing the release of hostages (including Claire) who were being held by rebels during the battle of Vientiane in 1960. Later, Stan was chosen for the Department of State’s rigorous two-year language training program in Mandarin Chinese, followed by an assignment to the U.S. Consulate General in Hong Kong. This was followed by an assignment to Kathmandu, Nepal in the late 1960’s as Political Officer of the U.S. Embassy, where he also coordinated with U.S. climbing expeditions to the Himalayan country. After assignments in Michigan and Washington, D.C. Stan was sent to Beijing, China in 1975 to serve as Political Officer of the U.S. Liaison Office, serving under George H.W. Bush who would later become the 41st President of the United States. At that time, the United States and China did not have formal diplomatic relations, but exchanges between the two countries were increasing daily. Stan’s 36-year diplomatic career was centered on China, and his fluency in Chinese served him well. He served as the Political Officer of the U.S. Consulate in Hong Kong in the late 1970’s, as Deputy Director of the American Institute in Taiwan, and then as Consul General of the U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai from 1983- 1987, and also as Charges d’Affaires in Seoul, Korea from 1988-1990. Stan’s last posting was as Director of the American Institute of Taiwan, a post equivalent to the rank of Ambassador. The Institute was established in 1979 to coordinate our relations with Taiwan after the United States formally recognized the People’s Republic of China and de-recognized the Republic of China. Although modest nearly to a fault, Stan received a number of awards for superior performance over his career. Upon his retirement in 1994, Stan and Claire returned to his beloved Wyoming, spending their time between the family property in the Platte Valley adjacent to the National Forest, and homes in Saratoga and Laramie. In retirement, Stan took up geology and natural resource conservation as serious matters of interest and study. He established a conservation easement under the Nature Conservancy and worked closely with Wyoming Game & Fish and NCRS on conservation projects. His main passion over his 29 years of retirement in southeastern Wyoming was working outdoors at the family’s 1,900-acre mountain property near Saratoga, building on his father J.G. Brooks’ legacy dating from 1933. Stan’s best days in retirement were spent walking great distances across the foothills of the Sierra Madre, mattock or iron bar in hand, working on the fence line, seeking new rocks to move or a new surface spring to protect. Although his diplomatic career for America took him all over the world, Stan always knew he was from Wyoming, and this was a source of immense pride and satisfaction for him. Stan had a funny story that captured his retirement perfectly. One day at Allen Insurance in Rawlins, he was waiting for a clerk to finish some paperwork. A couple of desks away another clerk, a friend of Stan’s from grade school days over seventy years earlier in PARCO-Sinclair was talking to another customer. Both of them were looking at Stan. Stan overhead the old friend say, “Him over there? He used to be some kind of ambassador. Now he’s a hermit back in the hills.” Laughing, Stan would say his old school friend had not missed the mark by far … in either characterization. Stan is survived by his wife Claire Stevenson Brooks, of Malden, Mass, and by his four children, David, John, Susan, and Jeffrey, and by his six grandchildren, Oliver, Nicolas, Madeline, Isabella, Lucas and Whitney. His family have inherited Stan’s deep love for the harsh natural beauty and rewarding landscapes of Wyoming. The Brooks family would like to thank friends and neighbors and the good people of Saratoga and Laramie for their kindness to Stan and Claire over the years. A remembrance event will be held for Stan during the summer of 2023 in Saratoga, Wyoming. The date and time will be announced later. Condolences and reminiscences about Stan may be sent to the family at P.O. Box 770

Departed: 12/10/2022 (Windsor)
Obituary Preview: Patricia Naslund of Windsor, Colorado passed away on the 10th of December 2022 at the age of 69.
I am sad to announce the passing of my dear sister Patsy Naslund. Her bright light and big heart left us far too soon. Patsy passed away peacefully on December 10th, 2022. She left behind a sister, Barbara Naslund (George McCloskey), her nephew Jack Orr, and her niece Brenda Orr-Lyner. She was born January 7th, 1953, in La Mesa, CA. Patsy grew up in El Cajon, CA and graduated from El Cajon Valley High School in 1971. She had moved to Cheyenne Wyoming for a few years but returned to her roots.  Circumstances changed and so we had her come to Colorado and live with me and my husband, George, here in Windsor in 2016. She quickly found the Windsor Community Rec Center that became her home away from home. She loved her Silver Sneakers classes and jumped right in to learning Mahjongg, which became her passion. She made many close and wonderful friends through the center that enriched her life and gave her much joy. Patsy was quite the crafter. She loved sewing gifts for her friends and family. And she was a master at making holiday cards and birthday cards that were amazing are true keepsakes. To honor her memory, we are holding a celebration of her life on Sunday, January 15th, at the Windsor Community Recreation Center in Windsor, CO.  We invite anyone who knew her to drop in between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., and we ask that you wear bright colors and share memories of Patsy.

Aaron James McCorkindale - February 10, 1998 - November 14, 2022

Departed: 11/14/2022 (Windsor)
Obituary Preview: Aaron James McCorkindale passed away unexpectedly on November 14th, 2022, at the young age of 24.
Aaron was born on February 10, 1998, in Salida, CO. He was a sensitive, adventurous soul who never knew a stranger. He loved to make people laugh and always had a joke to tell. His smile could light up a room. Aaron had a heart of gold and was always full of love and forgiveness. He was talented and knew how to live life to the fullest. He loved with all his heart and was very protective of his friends and family and had so many adventures in life. Being born in the middle of this wonderful mountain town he was always seeking adventures and was always up and going. As one family member put it “Aaron lived his life with his hair on fire.”
Aaron participated in 4-H. Through 4-H, Aaron learned many skills such as how to do dog obedience, cake decorating, baking, leather crafting and braiding, shooting, and archery. He was a skilled archer and baker. Taking grand champion in the state fair for his amazing apple pie.
He was an amazing musician and could play any instrument he set his mind to, trumpet, guitar, alto saxophone, and many others. His sister remembers how he once asked to play her alto saxophone and within an hour he was able to play it well and went downtown in Salida to play “Careless Whisper.” Aaron also worked hard on learning how to play his family's favorite songs on his guitar including teaching himself how to play the guitar instrumental “Classical Gas”.
Aaron was a talented actor. He did drama all throughout middle school and high school and once dreamed of becoming an actor, and he even brought his fencing training into one of his performances.
Aaron, being a fast learner, taught himself a variety of talents. He taught himself how to contact and fire juggle, unicycle, parkour, mechanics, gold panning, and blacksmithing to name a few. He learned to contact juggle in order to portray the character Jareth, from the movie “Labyrinth,” at Comic Con. He made a variety of gifts for friends and family members from blacksmithing.
Aaron did Tai Kwan Do and Boy Scouts throughout his school years. In Tai Kwan Do he had a purple belt and was planning on continuing to get his black belt. He was known for his amazing flying side kick. Aaron graduated from Horizons Exploratory Academy in 2017. There he gained a deeper appreciation for the outdoors and became an avid hiker, camper, and cave explorer.
He loved skiing. Going up to the mountain was one of his favorite things to do and he was excited to work at Monarch for the 2022-2023 ski season. His adventurous soul led him to the river for rafting and kayaking. And you could often see Aaron riding around town on his motorcycle. Lately though, he dreamed of becoming a pilot. He loved being in the air and loved the sense of freedom it gave him. He was planning on going to aviation school to become an official commercial pilot.
Having nearly lost him to numerous intussusceptions as an infant, and then to almost lose him again to devastating effects of Stevens Johnson Syndrome at 10 years old, his family admired his courage as he silently dealt with the lifelong aftereffects of Stevens Johnson Syndrome and will always be grateful for the time that they did have with him.
Aaron will always be remembered by his mother and father, Terry and Jim McCorkindale. His older sister Shaunalee McCorkindale and her partner Terry Gardunio and his daughter Senecka. His older sister Jayme Jefferson, her husband Scott, and their daughter Skylar. Aaron loved being a dad-like figure to both of his nieces and went out of his way to make them both happy.
Aaron also leaves behind many Aunts and Uncles, his dog, Figaro and his dearly beloved cat, Turbo. Both of his animals miss their human greatly.
To say he will be missed doesn’t even begin to describe the sentiment. The world lost a truly amazing person, and we are so thankful and blessed that we had him for as long as we did.
His family is planning on having a celebration of life for him on May 20, 2023. An announcement with details will follow later.
The family has asked that people write down their memories of Aaron so that a remembrance book can be made for his nieces and family. A memorial account has been set up at High Country Bank, or donations can be made to the Stevens Johnson Foundation.

Harvey "Corky" Douglas Tomky - November 10, 1933 - October 02, 2022

Departed: 10/02/2022 (Windsor)
Obituary Preview: Harvey “Corky” Tomky, passed away on 10/02/2022.
Corky was born to Herman F. Tomky and Mary S. Tomky at their farm southeast of Brush on November 10, 1933.
Corky lived most of his life as a resident of Morgan County, leaving only to serve in Special Services in the United States Army during the Korean War 1953 – 1955.
Corky graduated from Brush High School in 1951. While in high school he was very active in 4H and FFA. He was elected president of Colorado FFA in 1952.
After Corky returned from the service, he purchased his first farm in the Weldon Valley in 1957 where he continued to live until 2020 when he and his wife, Connie, moved to Windsor. Versatility was his middle name as he successfully operated many facets of farming including a hog farrowing and finishing operation as well as raising sugar beets, corn, alfalfa, and beans. He had to change occupations in 1977 after developing a chemical systemic poisoning and had to give up hands-on farming.
He never met an obstacle he could not overcome. He started studying for and passed the Colorado Real Estate courses specializing in farm and ranch real estate. He then passed the Colorado General Appraisal test to become a certified Farm and Ranch Appraiser in 1980. He then went into business for himself until retirement in 1993.
Although he lived in the Weldon Valley, he became very active in Fort Morgan business associations. He was active in the Chamber of Commerce, serving as President in 1983. He was very active in the Morgan County Board of Realtors, serving as President in 1982. He served on the Morgan County Adjustment Board for 24 years.
Corky was known for his gregarious personality, never knew a stranger, and loved buying and selling real estate owning many properties over the years. He developed and brought into the City of Fort Morgan his alfalfa farm now known as the Tomky, Brenda Joy, Shawnee I and II sub-divisions in southwest Fort Morgan.
Corky married the one true love of his life in 1969 when he married his wife, Connie. They were married for 53 years.
One of Corky’s favorite things to do was travel. He traveled with his mother in 1989 when they went on a month-long bus tour of Europe, highlighted by a trip to Poland where his mother visited a church in Warsaw to look for family records. The one remarkable thing about this trip for Corky was the fact that two short weeks after he and his mom visited the Berlin Wall, it was taken down.
Corky and Connie continued to travel extensively. They were on every continent except Africa and Antarctica. Their two favorite places were South Island, New Zealand and Costa Rica. They were on a boat tour of the Volga River in Russia when the Twin Towers were destroyed on 9/11.
Corky was a life member of both the VFW and the Fort Morgan Elks Lodge.
Corky had many passions and interests in life. He loved to golf, fish, and play cards. He especially enjoyed being a driver for the Toyota dealerships, shuttling cars and trucks wherever needed.
Everywhere Corky traveled, he engaged people in conversation getting to know them and what they did for a living and what things were like where they came from.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Connie of Windsor and two sons, Michael (Kareena) of Mead and Trace (Sabrina) of Weldona, his sister, Bemmalou Bollig of Montrose, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Corky was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Darwin F. Tomky.
