Robert Hayden Avellini - August 28, 1953 - May 04, 2024

Departed: 05/04/2024 (Farmingdale)
Obituary Preview: Robert (Bob) Hayden Avellini, 70, passed away on May 4, 2024 in Northborough, Massachusetts after a brief and valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. Son of Hayden and Eleanore, Bob grew up in a close-knit family alongside his sisters, Frances Kammerer (deceased 2009), Barbara, and Lorraine.
From a young age, Bob exhibited a passion for athletics, excelling in every endeavor he pursued especially baseball and football. He was a pitcher and shortstop on the winning team of the 1968 Senior Little League World Series, coached by his father Hayden. As a student at New Hyde Park Memorial High School, he made a name for himself as an All-County shortstop, catching the eye of recruiters from the New York Yankees. His true love, however, was on the football field, where his talent shone brightest. Recruited by the University of Maryland, Bob became the starting quarterback for the team and led UMD to two bowl games. Following his collegiate success, Bob was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1975. He played 10 seasons for the Bears, sharing the field with the legendary Walter Payton and leading the team to the playoffs in 1977 for the first time in 14 years.
Bob retired from the NFL in 1986 and pivoted his professional career from football to real estate and philanthropy. Settling in Chicago, he was an early investor in the now very popular Wrigleyville area. He was also highly engaged in local charities where he facilitated and appeared in numerous charity golf tournaments and events, raising funds for the local community.
Most of Bob’s personal time was dedicated to his family, friends, dogs, teaching, health, fitness, and of course, golf. He approached life with passion, living each day to the fullest. An inspiration to those around him, he eagerly embraced new challenges, striving to excel in whatever he pursued. Whether it be the countless hours on the golf course perfecting his chip shot, the dedication in training his perfectly behaved dogs, visiting a dozen open houses on a Sunday to get a feel for the market, or the passion he had for spending time with his family and friends, Bob has left an indelible mark on everything he touched.
Bob is survived by his loving sisters Barbara (Robert Feccia) and Lorraine; his nieces and nephews Christopher Kammerer (Leslie), Lisa Bombaj (Plinart), Stephen Feccia (Isabelle), Jeffrey Feccia (Bridget), and Kristen Curtiss (Gregory) and their children; his devoted girlfriend Beverly Fanning; and many others whose lives he deeply touched. He will be greatly missed.
Bob’s legacy is one of love, kindness, and unyielding determination. Though he may no longer walk among us, his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at a date to be determined. If you wish to donate in his memory, Bob has suggested the ASPCA, the Humane Society, or your local animal shelters
