Marcia Lee Hobbs - March 02, 1943 - March 08, 2022

Departed: 03/08/2022 (Rockton)
Obituary Preview: Marcia Lee Hobbs, 79, joined the angels in heaven on March 8, 2022. She was born on March 2, 1943, in Rockford, Illinois the daughter of the late Harold and Nancy J Remfrey.
Marcia is survived by her husband, David C Hobbs Sr, children, David C Hobbs Jr and Michele (Mimi) Hobbs; grandchildren Dalton Hobbs and Shelby Hobbs; her cousins; and her fur babies Libby Rose and Maddie.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
Marcia lived a meaningful life, one that involved courage and being in service of others. She was never fond of being the person at center stage and preferred to be the most reliable, steadfast, thoughtful, co-pilot a husband, son, daughter, grandchild, cousin, friend could ever have. She did not shy away from adversity and was fiery about standing up for and empowering others. Anyone who knew her, knew she had strong convictions and was feisty.
As a young wife and mother, she was instrumental in helping develop one of the first in kind suicide prevention Hotline telephone programs in Southern Wisconsin. As her children grew, she volunteered her time at their schools and in the Turtle 4-H club. Later, her husband encouraged her to return to school to pursue her dream of becoming a Registered Nurse. She worked for Beloit Hospital, and then found her true calling as a Hospice and Home Health Care Nurse. Taking care of others was her passion, Marcia was always thinking of others, and with her actions she did what she could to improve people’s lives and that she did, in many ways.
She retired from nursing when she moved to Selmer, Tennessee. While there, Marcia enjoyed her time studying the US Civil war, spending time with the Twitty’s, gardening, and raising her golden retriever. It was there that she fell in love with quilting. When Marcia and her husband returned to the Midwest, she continued to quilt innovative pieces, volunteer her time at church, and took joy in spending time with her grandchildren.
Marcia passed peacefully at home. She will be missed.
Thank you to her care team at UW Hospital and Northern Illinois Hospice. Special thank you’s to Doctors Sam and Meghan Lubner and Dr. Cheryl Miller for their compassionate care of Marcia.

Edward W. Collins - March 31, 1928 - January 18, 2022

Departed: 01/18/2022 (Rockton)
Obituary Preview: Edward W. ‘Red’ Collins passed away peacefully in his home on January 18th, 2022 after a long and happy life. Red was born March 31st 1928 in Oakley, TN, to Maude and John William Collins. The youngest of 9, his mother died when he was less than a year old and he was cared for by his special sister, Magdalen, until he reached school age. Red grew up with 5 brothers and 3 sisters, learning the value of hard work and the love of family through both hardship and joy on his family’s farm. In a time where you pranked someone by putting their wagon on the barn roof, rode a horse to school, and ate what you grew, Red longed for something different. With his father’s blessing, he left the farm for a job in construction and joined the National Guard at 18.
In the summer of 1949, Red met the love of his life, Kathryn Seals. In love and defying family objections, they ran off together and got married. They were wed April 2nd, 1950 in Mississippi at 6 a.m. after waking up a Justice of the Peace to do the job. It wasn’t long, however, before he was called to active duty in the U.S. Army. One week after Christmas 1950, Red left his new bride behind to serve his country in Korea. Soon after, he learned he not only had a wife to return to but also a baby on the way.
After finishing his commitment to the military, Red was eager to reunite with his young family. On a trek to find work to support them all, he landed in Rockton, Illinois and that is where they made their home together.
Red worked 38 years as an electrician. He built his house on Center Street with the help of his son, designed, crafted, built, and rebuilt beautiful things for his adored wife and still found time to help family and friends with their needs. He loved being a husband and father and loved being a grandfather even more. He loved traveling, particularly with his wife. As a man who could do everything, he was always in high demand and could always be counted on. Red was a scoutmaster, a craftsman and one mean roller skater. He was a protector, an adventurer and a fixer of all things. He was a tinkerer, a coin collector, a breakfast maker and, most of all, a good man. He will live on in the many treasures he built in his workshop and in the words he left for us all.
Red is survived by his son, Robert Edward Collins, granddaughters Susan, Sarah and Amanda, 3 great grandchildren, a great, great grandchild and countless nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will never forget him. He is predeceased by his parents, John William and Maude, siblings, Arisona, Walter, Floyd, Magdalen, Willard, Mattie Bell, Wilton and Willie Hugh, daughter, Tammy Lee and his loving wife and soulmate, Kathryn.
Husband, Father, veteran, friend, most beloved ‘Gramps’, and our family patriarch for many years, he will be dearly missed but remembered often and with joy, love and gratitude. You can just call him Uncle Red…like so many did. “A great man is always willing to be little.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

Several new assignments and three children later, he was called to duty in Vietnam in 1968, where he flew 113 combat and combat support missions as a Bombardier/Navigator in the B-66 light bomber, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal, among other decorations for airmanship and mission performance.
Just prior to his year in Vietnam, he attended the Ohio State University for a masters degree in Accounting and Finance, which led to his various assignments in the AF Comptroller, Accounting, Budget, Computer Science, and Management Analysis fields. Toward the end of his career, he was the Budget Director for the Pacific Command (PACAF), then was selected to the Inspector General Staff at Norton AFB, CA in 1982, where he retired as a full Colonel on February 29, 1984. His post-retirement employment included Budget Director at citrus producer Pure Gold, Budget Director at World Vision, and Sales Associate and Trainer at Met Life Insurance.
Don's priorities have always been God, Family, and country, in that order. Even while at the Pentagon for one of his senior staff assignments, he found the time to support and participate in the Officers Christian Fellowship group for those assigned there. With each new reassignment and transfer, one of his first priorities was to find a local Bible-teaching church for the family. But his involvement didn't stop there. He served on several elder boards and as church Treasurer. Before his career in the AF was over, he had moved Jean and the family 19 times! This may explain Don's extrovert personality. He never met a person with whom he couldn't converse, and these qualities and more made him a stellar church usher, with an amazing ability to remember congregants' names. He also made it a personal responsibility to follow up with new attendees to make them feel welcome and appreciated. In 1992, Don and Jean sold their home in Redlands, CA to move to Roscoe to be closer to their kids and grandkids. As Jean's health had been deteriorating for several years, Don became her primary care giver until her death in 2016. For almost two decades, Don and Jean had become very good friends with a couple they'd met at Lino's Restaurant in Rockford after enjoying a meal there. They were on their way out the door, when Don struck up a conversation with Dave and Denise Martin, who were also dining there. They hit it off immediately, and every month thereafter, they'd meet for dinner at a local restaurant and enjoy an evening out as a foursome. Even after Dave passed in 2008, the three of them would continue the tradition until Jean died in 2016. Then, there were two. We're not sure who came up with the idea first, but a year later, Don married his 2nd beautiful and brainy gal, and this one spoke French!
The new couple started traveling together and spending the winter months in the warm south, including Gulf Shores, AL, and the Florida Gulf Coast. Shortly after they were married, Don and Denise took a wonderful trip to France where Don had a chance to meet many of Denise's close and extended family. He often commented afterward how warm and cordial they all were -- not to mention that they laid out the red carpet for them in every way.
As is often the case later in life, medical issues created challenges for both Don and Denise. With the advent of the additional spectre of a "new" virus, their foundational medical issues took on a new relevance. After a brief illness in late December, 2021, this combination was too much to overcome for Don, and the day that the Lord knew about since before he was born arrived for him on January 8th. On that day, we lost a dear father, husband, grandpa, great grandpa, uncle, stepdad and friend, whose legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of so many who loved him.

Our grief is immeasurable at the loss of someone who completed us and filled us with so much excitement. He's got one finger up and four fingers down on each hand, laughing into the next phase after this mortal coil. We're coming behind you, Bug.
