Mafalda A Von - April 29, 1917 - March 12, 2022

Departed: 03/12/2022 (Mt Pleasant)
Obituary Preview: Mafalda A. Von, 104, crossed over into her new life on Saturday, March 12, 2022. She was surrounded by the love of her family and her dog Emma
.
Mafalda was born on April 29, 1917, in Jersey City, New Jersey. She was a survivor of two global pandemics, the Korean War, World War II, and the Great Depression.
A lifelong independent thinker, she was a woman way ahead of her time. She was a proud graduate of Dickinson High School which she attended despite her parent’s opposition. She played center on the school’s basketball team.
Mafalda loved Nursing and graduated as a R.N. from the Medical Center Nursing School in Jersey City, New Jersey. Mafalda’s parents were so opposed to her becoming a nurse that they refused to attend their own daughter’s graduation. She enjoyed nursing in all its forms. She was a Trauma Nurse at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City. When Physicians were conscripted during WW II, she rode ambulances in New York City’s worst neighborhoods often accompanied by a Policeman and a gun.
She loved babies and eventually became a labor and delivery Nurse alongside her longtime associate Dr. Ippolito. Dr. Ippolito often commented that Mafalda had the “best hands” and was better at delivering babies than his own physician son. He extorted Mafalda to go to Medical School (and to marry his son) but she remained devoted to nursing believing that it was really nursing that had the most contact with patients. Following her graduation from nursing school Mafalda did what was unheard of in those days. She moved out of her parent’s house in Jersey City and moved to New York City where she got her own apartment. She loved New York City and all it had to offer. She passed that love onto her youngest daughter Judith. While living in New York City Mafalda met and married her husband of 57 years Cornelius M. Von, of Connecticut. Together they explored New York City. In those days marrying outside of one’s ethnic group was frowned upon, and Mafalda was practically disowned by her parents for marrying a Hungarian when she was of the Italian descent. Mafalda and Cornelius both enjoyed “Big Band” music and she especially enjoyed Frank Sinatra. They continued to “cut a rug” as long as they were physically able. Cornelius suffered a serious car accident at the age of 40 which forever impacted his ability to work. Mafalda again did the impossible. She worked three jobs to support her three daughters and paid for all of them to receive a college education thanks to her extreme sacrifices.
At an advanced age, Mafalda herself returned to college at Jersey City State and received a Bachelor of Science degree. This was long before going back to school was fashionable. Mafalda was a strong advocate for public health. She eventually made public health the focus of her career and after returning to New Jersey established a free immunization clinic in Jersey City, a baby keep-well station for the care of mother and their infants and was instrumental in starting the WIC program. She was a founding member of the first Union for nurses in Jersey City because she was a long-time advocate for nursing rights, feeling that their contributions were often underappreciated and underpaid.
Mafalda was intelligent, articulate and wise beyond her years. She was witty with a wicked sense of humor and always brave despite all the adversity she faced. She was generous, even to those who did not deserve it and never bitter despite coming from a very difficult family.
The world is a much sadder and drearier place without her. Her legacy lives on in all the lives she has touched with her love, wit and wisdom.
She is predeceased by her husband Cornelius M. Von, her parent’s Raphael and Antionette Basile.
She is survived by her three children Therese Von, Lucy Ann Serwetz and Judith M. Von; her grandsons, Justin (Jessica) Serwetz and Trent Serwetz; and her great-granddaughter Kaia.
Special thanks go to special friends Diane Bailey, Bill Schandall and Matilda, Dan and Thalia Townsend. Thanks to Marie Donnely for staying overnight when Mafalda was in the hospital. A special shout out to her long-term partner in crime Sister Mary Cyril and to all the friends and neighbors who enjoyed partying with her over the years. A thank you to the whole team at Amedisys Hospice especially nurse Jennifer Perry and her aide Jourdan Beecher. Krystal Musselman was Mafalda’s favorite caretaker and deserves notice for conscientious care. Jessica Perry was both a friend and housekeeper who maintained sanity and organization.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, 1520 Rifle Range Road, Mt. Pleasant. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, March 17, 2022, at Christ Our King Catholic Church, burial will follow in Holy Name Cemetery in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to McALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL & CREMATION, Mt. Pleasant, 1520 Rifle Range Rd., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464, (843) 884-3833.

She was born in Bangor, Maine on July 4, 1951, the daughter of Robert Barlow Rhoads and Phyllis Ann Paul Rhoads.
Cornelia grew up on her parents’ 140-acre horse farm in Old Town, Maine. The Rhoads were a close and loving family, and Cornelia was a devoted daughter to her parents, as well as a kind and loving big sister and role model to her three younger sisters, Ruth, Alecta, and Alesia. She also spent much of her childhood caring for an assortment of animals on the farm, from horses and sheep to cats and dogs. These childhood experiences were the beginning of a lifelong love of animals, as well as a lifelong commitment to caring for others, especially the ones she loved.
Cornelia graduated from Old Town High School in 1970. She went on to attend the University of Maine and graduated in 1974 with a degree in Child Development. After college, she went to work as a nursery schoolteacher. Her kind, warm, and caring personality made her perfect for this role, and she went on to teach nursery school for over 30 years.
Cornelia married Norman Buck, and together they started a family at their home in Old Town, Maine. In 1979, the most important person in Cornelia’s life was born, her son Rob Rhoads. Cornelia was an incredibly devoted and loving mother and was determined to provide every opportunity she could to her son. Growing up, Rob was an outstanding athlete, and Cornelia, Norm, and Rob made many happy memories as a family, traveling around Maine and across the country to numerous sporting events. Later, she was an ever-present fan at Rob’s football, basketball, and baseball games for Orono High School, as well as at Rob’s baseball games for Brandeis University. Cornelia never missed a game, she was always there to support her son, not only in sports, but in everything he did.
Cornelia remained close to her parents, living just down the road from them in Old Town. She was there for them as they got older, and she and Norm would often drop by to visit and bring them dinner or a homemade dessert. She was a terrific baker and was renowned by all who knew her for her ability to make desserts that were both delicious and healthy. Cornelia and Norm also treasured their trips to see Rob, whose work had taken him to Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. They made many special trips to see Rob, his wife Heather, and their two children, Charlotte, and Emerson.
Later, after the passing of her husband, Cornelia moved to Mount Pleasant to be closer to the family that she loved so dearly. She doted on her two granddaughters and was an enthusiastic supporter at Charlotte and Emerson’s dance recitals and sporting events, cheering them on just as she had done for Rob many years earlier.
To all those who knew her, Cornelia will be remembered for her kind, loving, and caring nature, and for her devotion to her family and the ones she loved. She also had a fun-loving side and was always up for a spur-of-the-moment shopping excursion or a dance party in the kitchen. She had a reputation as a prankster who could always make you laugh.
Cornelia’s family will also be forever grateful to the caregivers at Bright Star - Cori, Dee, Shirley, and Valencia, for the love and compassion they showed to Cornelia and her family over the last year. They brought joy and laughter to Cornelia and her family.
Cornelia is survived by her sisters, Ruth Rhoads-Vigue, Alecta Rhoads, and Alesia Rhoads; her son Rob and his wife Heather; her granddaughters Charlotte and Emerson Rhoads, and many nephews and nieces.

Raymond W Schmelter - March 26, 1929 - February 17, 2022

Departed: 02/17/2022 (Mt Pleasant)
Obituary Preview: Raymond William Schmelter, 92 of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, was peacefully called to be with his late wife Marian in heaven on February 17, 2022.
Ray was born March 26, 1929 in Escanaba, Michigan to William Otto Schmelter (1896 –1966) and Alma Ernestine Giese (1896 – 1958). Ray had two siblings, sisters Adeline Helen Schmelter (1921 – 2010) and Gladys Alma Blizzard (1927-1992).
Ray was a beloved husband of over 70 years to his late wife Marian Jensen Schmelter, 92, of Mount Pleasant South Carolina, who passed away January 3, 2022, and a loving father to his two sons, Dean (Karen) of Mount Pleasant, SC and Peter (Kelly) of Sudbury, MA; grand-children Garrett Schmelter (Meghan) of James Island, South Carolina; Lauren Cox (Robbie) of Mount Pleasant; Keith and Emmy Schmelter of Sudbury, MA, and great grandfather to Landon and Connor.
Ray and Marian met while students at Escanaba High School in Escanaba, Michigan and instantly became high school sweethearts. Ray’s penchant for mischievous ways and innocent pranks got him in to trouble early on at school, but Marian saw the good in him and stayed by his side. Ray focused more while at college at Michigan Tech and soon after graduation they married, but to anyone who knew him, his mischievous ways never fully abandoned him. His continuous pranks were popular stories at family gatherings for many years.
Ray moved to Connecticut where he raised his two children with Marian while working as a Program Manager on the jet engine fuel control project at Hamilton Standard for over 30 years, and then at Sikorsky Helicopter as a Program Manager on a helicopter recovery contract for the Taiwanese Navy. In spite of the demands of his career, he was always quick to volunteer in whatever sport or activity his kids participated in, including an assistant football coach, a soccer referee, manning the stopwatch at countless swim meets, all while working full time and for 4 years going to school part time to get his MBA. Once retired, he trained to first become a volunteer fireman and later a Fire Commissioner and Fire Inspector for several of the communities he lived in South Carolina, sang tenor in the local acapella group and the church choir, and more recently volunteered at Roper St Francis Hospital in Mount Pleasant for over nine years, greeting visitors with his big smile, bigger personality and infectious positive attitude. Each morning he looked forward to the local paper being delivered so he could play his favorite Sudoku game using a pen to enter his numbers, not a pencil so he had to be right the first time.
He loved playing tennis and golf, playing golf well into his 80’s before settling to watch his personal favorite sports. Early on, he enjoyed watching Arnold Palmer compete against Jack Nicholas every Sunday on TV; Yankees baseball; and any team from his home state of Michigan, college or pro; and more recently he enjoyed following Clemson’s football during their national title runs.
Over the years, Ray taught himself to be incredibly skilled in woodworking; from repairing and building furniture at the request of all his family, to patiently carving life-like ducks and smaller bird figures; creating beautiful wood framed trivets with thousands of wine corks; to wood picture frames for gifts, he loved working with his hands creating objects of his imagination. He always seemed to find time to fulfill numerous requests from so many friends and family who all loved his true talent and craftsmanship.

Gladys Peña Falla - October 15, 1937 - January 04, 2022

Departed: 01/04/2022 (Mt Pleasant)
Obituary Preview: Gladys Peña Falla, 84 of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina departed for Heaven on January 4th, 2022. Gladys, also known as Bella, was surrounded by family at Mt. Pleasant Manor as she died peacefully. Bella lived with Alzheimer’s disease for the last 10 years of her life, but her life was so much more.
Bella grew up in Colombia and traveled throughout Europe and the Americas. She married Luis Alberto in 1963 and they made their way to New York shortly thereafter. While in New York, Bella worked at the Bulova Watch company where she assembled Accutron watches —the watch famously pitched on the final season of “Mad Men.” It’s no wonder that the world’s most precise timepiece was made by the world’s most precise and punctual mother. Bella woke up at 6am everyday, kept a pristine home, and prepared delicious meals made with Adobo and love —always on time. Inspired by style icons of her day like Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn and Jackie O, Bella’s outfits, hair and makeup were always exquisite.
Bella was funny and kind, and she made everyone feel special and loved. Music brought her joy, especially salsa —and she was a superb dancer. Bella loved the USA and was overjoyed when she became a US citizen. Bella later lived in Miami, Florida and in Charleston, South Carolina. She worked hard until she retired, never missing a day of work. You never heard Bella complain of being sick, tired or stressed out. Always stoic and upbeat until her later days, when asked “how are you” she would reply “divinamente” (divinely) with a smile. While in Charleston, Bella volunteered at the East Cooper Community Outreach center’s Clothing & Linen Closet where she amazed co-workers at her ability to perfectly fold a fitted bed sheet.
Her life was not without hardships. Bella lost several children before her daughter Vanessa was born. This burdened Bella greatly as she came from a big family and always wanted to have a big family of her own. In recent years, Bella forgot that she had a daughter. While painful at first, her family was delighted to find out that Vanessa was replaced by the memory of Bella’s older sister Dilia. They played along and took pleasure in Bella’s childlike spirit as they uncovered memories from Bella’s youth. Proof that what the mind forgets, the heart always remembers.
Bella will be dearly missed and always remembered by her daughter, Vanessa Adams Garsys; her son-in-law, Darius Garsys; and her three grandchildren, Tiernan, Amanda and Bianca; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Bella’s beautiful legacy on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at 3pm at the McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, 1520 Rifle Range Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
A Catholic funeral mass followed by internment will be held in Bogotá, Colombia at a later date.
