Obituary Preview: Paul W. Haskins, age 73, of Knox, passed away Monday, May 13, 2024. Paul was born March 25, 1951 in Frankfort, Indiana to Wilbur and Barbara (Wampler) Haskins, both deceased. Paul is the former owner-operator of Peoples IGA Grocery Store in Knox and had also retired from Galfab in Winamac. He loved riding his Harley, boating, fishing, gardening, trains and spending time with his fur-babies, Cooter and Barney. He was a huge Chicago Cubs fan, and loved watching his grandkids play softball and baseball. On December 11, 1971 he married his wife of 52 years, Diana Fields Haskins, she survives. Also surviving are his children, Shay Haskins of Knox and Kasi Decker (Steve) of Winamac, three sisters, Janice Waymire (Jarrel) of Elwood, Indiana, Deanna Chinn (Jim) of Anderson, Indiana, and Bobbie Sue Evans (Larry) of Tallahassee, Florida, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Mark and Wilbur Haskins.

Obituary Preview: Timothy P. Brettin, age 82, of Knox, passed away Saturday, May 4, 2024 surrounded by family in his home. Tim was born February 26, 1942 in LaPorte, Indiana to Edward Brettin Sr. and Nora (McBride) Brettin. Tim was a United States Army veteran (1960-1962), serving his country post-war during the Berlin Crisis in Germany.
He was very involved in his community and various community organizations, such as, member of the congregation of St Peter Lutheran church in North Judson, Starke County Historical Society, Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, congregational chairman, and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church Sunday School teacher, a long time Bass Lake Lions member, International Lions, Melvin Jones Fellow Distinguished Service Award recipient, treasurer Starke County Republican Party, Washington Township Volunteer firefighter. He retired from Bethlehem Steel as an Electrical Supervision/Forman. After his retirement, He joined a Lutheran men’s group, Laborers for Christ. A Christian-based group of Lutheran men who together, built Lutheran church facilities, schools, and refurbished homes.
The family was a Christ-centered home, with two parents and hard working. Tim was a servant of the Lord, and a giving servant of time and talents. Tim was always willing to give someone a helping hand or encourage them to do anything they needed.
He and his wife, Peggy, were life-time sweethearts. They married on August 25,1962. However, the two attended church and Sunday School together, confirmed together, and this year they were married 62 years together. In fact, they were in choir together, and in a youth organization in the church too.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy (Marks) Brettin, also surviving are their four sons, Timothy P. Brettin II (Ritta) of Sherrills Ford, North Carolina, Scott D. Brettin of Troutman, North Carolina, Keith A. Brettin (Valarie) of Mooresville, North Carolina and Michael S. Brettin of Valparaiso, Indiana, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Jessica, six brothers and a sister, Edward Brettin Jr., Francis “Bill” Brettin, James Brettin, John Brettin Sr., Richard “Dick” Brettin Sr., Matthew Brettin and Margaret “Marge” Schuster.
A visitation will take place Thursday, May 9, 2024 from 4-7:30pm (CT), with a Lions Club Memorial Service at 7:30pm at M.C. Smith Funeral Home in Knox. Funeral services will take place at St. Peter Lutheran Church in North Judson on Friday, May 10, 2024 at 11am (CT), with visitation one hour prior to services. Burial with military honors will follow at the Bass Lake Lutheran Cemetery in Knox.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bass Lake Lions Club or the St. Peter Lutheran School.

Obituary Preview: Yvonne Gloria Butler was born June 28, 1939 to Edward and Blanche Bennet in Sacramento, California. She passed away peacefully in her sleep May 3, 2024. She spent her entire life in Northern California, until the age of 80. At that time she moved to Indiana to be near her oldest daughter. Yvonne was a fun, energetic, independent woman. She was passionate about international travelling and home remodeling. Her stepdad, Lee, loved calling her “Mrs. Winchester” for her never ending house remodeling projects! She loved her family dearly, along with dancing, pinochle, jazz festivals, water skiing in her younger days, people and Engelbert Humperdinck. She was the life of the party with many, many friends. As a young mother, she had a thriving reupholstery business. As an empty nester, she built a very successful Realtor career.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Rodney Butler, her step-dad, Lee Teague and one granddaughter, Amber Butler. She leaves behind four children, Daniel Butler, Denice Runkle (Cliff), Tami Redding (Robert), and Troy Butler-Baker (David), and a sister, Gloria Teague-Schmidt (Paul). She also leaves behind five grandchildren, Heather, Joshua Matthew, Shannon and Jaimee, as well as, nine great grandchildren, Maddie, Alexander, Jacob, Shelby, Evelynn, Hannah, Mabel, Emilia and Daisy. A celebration of Yvonne’s life is planned for June 29, 2024 at Granite Bay/Folsom Lake, California (Specific time and location to be determined)
As Mom was passionate about the environment, in lieu of flowers, the family requests planting a tree in her memory or a donation to the charity of your choice.

She spent 23 years working at Pizza Hut, where everyone knew her as Granni. Scotty travelled all over the world with the United States Air Force for 37 years. He received several medals and awards for his service. Scotty had a true love for the outdoors and especially his horses Stormy and Thunder. He was a long-time member of the Golden Horseshoe Saddle Club. Scotty loved to have coffee every morning and afternoon at Christos in Knox, where he had several friends. He is survived by his son and daughter in law, Walter and Michelle Eskridge, his sister Vickie and three grandchildren, Whitney (Jason) Lopez, Walter Jr., and Lacielynn Eskridge, a great granddaughter, Payton Lopez, a nephew Scott and niece Jamie, along with many, many friends.
Scotty was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Peggy.

Billy loved to go fishing and was also a big sports fan who loved watching the Chicago Cubs and Blackhawks play. He also loved his pets, two cats and a dog, his favorite was his kitten, Boo. He is survived by his mother, Barbara Boyd of Chicago, his companion, Ashleigh Brewer of Knox, a son, Bailey Boyd of Knox, a sister, Elizabeth Boyd of Monterey, IN, brothers, Michael Boyd (Gabriella) of Chicago, and Joshua Boyd (Samantha) of Florida, and his nieces, Shayla, Serenity, Aubree, Ameliah, Ava and Isabelle. He held a special place in his heart for Addyson and Tatum, and especially loved his tea parties with Tatum! He was so proud of his son, Bailey for being such a great young man and of all of his accomplishments attending college. He was preceded in death by his father, William Boyd Jr. and his grandparents, William and Gladys Boyd, and Grandmother, Carol Davis.
A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, March 2, 2024 from 11am to 1pm (CT) at M.C. Smith Funeral Home in Knox. A dinner will follow at the Knox Community Center.

Elizabeth Sickbert - October 19, 1940 - February 11, 2024

Obituary Preview: Elizabeth "Betty" Mary Sickbert (Sirovy), 83, of Panama City, Florida, passed away on February 11th, 2024.Betty was born on October 19th, 1940, to Virginia and Joseph Sirovy in Michigan City, Indiana. She graduated from Knox High School in 1959.She moved to Dolly Madison in Gary, Indiana, an all-girls boarding house where she met long-time friend Carol.
She started her first job at Illinois Bell as a Telephone Operator, kickstarting a 25-year career with Mountain Bell and later AT&T.
In 1964, Betty moved to Orlando, Florida, and there she met and married John Dillard Felts in 1965. Betty and John went on to have one child, John Ashley Felts. And after working primarily as a waitress, sometimes working with John who was a Chef, she got back on as a Telephone Operator at Mountain Bell in Pueblo, Colorado. Betty loved to talk with folks, and the job suited her perfectly.
After her husband John passed in 1988, she moved around chasing AT&T as they closed offices due to automation. She met and married Earl Henry Sickbert in 1991. Earl called her “Liz.”Once she retired from AT&T, they settled in Panama City, Florida. She then went to work for Walmart and retired from there. Spent her remaining years visiting with family and friends and helping people, she was an avid coffee drinker, collector, and traveler, logging thousands of miles on the road.
Elizabeth was predeceased by John (1988), Earl (2015), her Mother Virginia (2004), Father Joseph (1975), brother Joseph Sirovy (2004), sisters Joanne Reda (2023), and Helen Eubanks (2023). She is survived by son John A. Felts; granddaughter Annika C. Felts; children Tammy L. Huntsman (Sickbert), Earl H. Sickbert Jr. (Barb Sickbert), Penny A. Jacobs (Sickbert); sisters Virginia Hawkins (Sirovy), Margorie Lockridge (Sirovy), Doris Doyle (Sirovy), Mary Nesbitt (Sirovy); and brother Jonathan Sirovy.
Services will be held at MC Smith Funeral Home, Knox, IN on March 16, 2024, at 2:00pm.

Rodriguez of Knox, Indiana, seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, George J. Mustonen and Jennie E. Maki Mustonen, her husband, Edward J. Rodriguez, a son, Charles R. Rodriguez, and two brothers, George and Duane Mustonen, and her granddaughter, Salina Rodriquez. A memorial service will take place at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at 2 pm (CT), with a luncheon following the services in the fellowship hall of the church.  M.C. Obituary Preview: Monsignor Richard Zollinger, a Roman Catholic priest in the Diocese of Gary, IN, was born March 23, 1929, in Fort Wayne, IN to the late Erwin and Catherine (Schof) Zollinger. He went home to heaven January 29, 2024. In Fort Wayne, he attended St. Patrick Grade School for 8 years and Central Catholic High School for 2 years before entering the minor seminary at St. Lawrence Seminary, Mt. Calvary, WI. Following his secondary education, he moved on to St. Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology where he attended 6 years. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 3, 1955.
During his lifetime of service as a priest, he served at numerous parishes within the Gary diocese. His last assignment was as Pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas parish in Knox, IN. He served as Director of Vocations for the Gary diocese and the Dean of various deaneries within the Gary diocese. He was elevated to Prelate of Honor on April 27, 1984.
Throughout his life he had many interests including scouting, photography, classical music, planning his flower gardens, traveling, Scuba diving, snow-skiing, officiating at basketball games, caring for his beloved black labs, and escaping to his lake cottage. As a young man he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and continued to participate in scouting as a chaplain. He knew no strangers, was an excellent listener, and reached out to anyone who needed a kind word. He had a knack for making everyone feel special. He had numerous stories to share and often incorporated them into his homilies. He valued his faith and family above all else. He loved his nephews and nieces and their families, and he enjoyed keeping up with them via his electronic photo frame.
Monsignor Zollinger Is preceded in death by his parents, Erwin and Catherine (Schof) Zollinger, his brother Erwin “Bud”(Ruth) Zollinger, and his sister Mary Catherine (Tom) Freiburger, and nephews Thomas and John Zollinger. He is survived by 3 nephews, 2 nieces, 17 great-nephews and great-nieces, and 37 great-great-nephews and great-great-nieces.
Rite of Reception will take place at 2:00 PM (CT) on Monday Feb 5 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 406 E. Washington St., Knox, IN. Visitation will be held on Monday, Feb 5 from 2 to 6 PM (CT) at St. Thomas Catholic Church, with evening prayers at 5:30 PM (CT) and on Tuesday Feb 6 at 9 AM (CT), at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church until morning prayers at 10:00 AM (CT). On Tuesday, Mass of Christian burial will take place at 10:30 AM (CT) at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Knox IN. Celebrant will be Most Reverend Robert J. McClory, Bishop of Gary. Burial will take place on Wednesday, Feb 7, 2024 at 11am (ET) at Catholic Cemetery, Fort Wayne, IN where he will be laid to rest next to his parents.

James A. Henriott - November 20, 1929 - January 21, 2024

Obituary Preview: James Henriott passed away on January 21, 2024, following complications from COVID. James was born November 20, 1929 in Logansport, IN to John and Edna (Tabler) Henriott. His parents, brother (Paul Henriott), and sister (Catherine Horban), preceded him in death.
Jim was raised on a farm in Fulton County and attended Rochester High School, where he graduated in 1947. He then enrolled at Indiana State Teacher’s College in Terre Haute, IN majoring in Mathematics and Industrial Arts. While at Indiana State, Jim was a basketball student manager for Coach John Wooden his freshman year, and his sophomore year he was a manager for Coach John Longfellow. He was also a baseball player all 4 years and was the starting catcher his junior and senior years.
Upon graduating from Indiana State, Jim was inducted into the US Army where he served for 2 years as a Counter Intelligence Corp (CIC) agent. He attended Japanese language school and was on orders to go to Korea, but at the last minute the orders were changed, and he was to report to Fort Benning, GA where he was assigned to run security clearance for members of the Army and Department of the Army Civilians, who were employed by the Army. He was stationed in Savannah, GA.
When the 2-year military obligation was completed, Jim was discharged and sent home to Rochester, where he worked as a section hand on the Nickle Plate Railroad until school began in September. He continued in the active Army Reserves for the next 2 years, attaining the rank of Sergeant. In September 1951, he began teaching mathematics at Main Junior High School in Mishawaka, IN. The next year he taught math and woodshop at Rochester High School. In the spring of 1955, he was contacted by the FBI to see if he would be interested in going to Germany to screen refugees for immigration to the US. The refugee program ended on December 31, 1956.
Jim married his beautiful wife, Beatrice Lehman, on July 4, 1956 in Hamburg, Germany. Bea had been an elementary school art teacher in Mishawaka and they had dated prior to Jim going to Germany as a Dept of the Army Civilian. Their marriage lasted 65 years until Beatrice’s death on April 1, 2022.
Jim and Beatrice had 3 children: Jay Henriott (Rosie) of Jasper, IN; Jill Harvey (Steve) of Banner Elk, NC; and Ann Nicoson (Kevin) of Romney, IN. Jim and Beatrice had 8 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Jim’s teaching career began in Mishawaka, then Rochester, each for 1 year, then South Bend Washington High School teaching mathematics for the next 10 years. Jim earned his Masters degree in school administration from the University of Notre Dame in 1960. His first administrative job was guidance director and high school assistant principal at North Judson High School for 1 year, and then 2 years as principal of Liberty Middle School in North Judson. The next 8 years he was the high school principal at North White High School in Monon, IN. In 1978 Jim came to Knox as the high school principal and after 6 years he was promoted to be the assistant to the superintendent with duties of transportation director, purchasing, hearing officer, athletics, among other duties. Jim retired in 1992 from the Knox Community School Corporation.
He was a 22-year member of the Knox Kiwanis Club having served as president for 1 year and Chairman of the Christmas Food Baskets project for 19 years. He also was a 5-year member of the Monon Lions Club. He served 13.5 years on the Starke County election board as the Democrat representative. He served as chairman of the Starke County Scholarship Selection Committee for 6 years.
Jim was an avid golfer and had a hole in one on September 13, 2011, on the 8th hole at Hamlet. His foursome included Doctor Howard Henry, Attorney LeRoy Gudeman, and Attorney Orville Nichols. LeRoy Gudeman was a golf mate for 30 years.
Jim was thankful for the help he received from Elara Hospice; caregivers Michelle and Shawn Hite, Brittany Lovely; and his neighbor for many years, Joann Rush. Viewing hours for family and friends will be Thursday evening (1/25/24) from 4 PM to 6 PM (CST), 5 PM to 7 PM (EST), at the MC Smith Funeral Home in Knox, IN, with funeral services to be held on Friday morning (1/26/24) at 9:30 AM (CST), 10:30 AM (EST). Becky loved to camp with friends and family and spent many summers playing a game of cards while a campfire illuminated the campsite late into the night.
She was also a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She is preceded by her son, Jason Douglas Cornelius Jr., and her parents, Ron and Glenda Warner. She is survived by her husband, Jason Cornelius, her son Jacob Cornelius, daughters, Kathryn Lynch and Alicia Banta as well as her grandchildren, Kaydence Lynch, Harlan Lynch, Weston Lynch, Mackenzie Banta, Emery Banta, Amareya Banta, and Jackson Banta, and her sister, Wendy Korp.
