Obituary Preview: Rozella May Dickey, age 84, of Tamaroa, passed away peacefully at 2:25am on Wednesday, April 13, 2022 at Fairview Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Du Quoin.
Rozella was born in Christopher on February 26, 1938, the daughter of Kattie (White) and Jess Willard White. She married Ernest Leroy Dickey in Sesser on December 24, 1954, at the young age of 16. Together, they have shared more than 67 years of marriage and precious memories. He survives.
Mrs. Dickey lived her life as a loving homemaker, wife, mother, and grandmother.  She will be dearly missed by all those that knew and loved her. She is survived by her loving husband- Ernest Dickey of Tamaroa Son and Daughter-in-law- Dennis and Sarah Dickey of Sesser Son and Daughter-in-law- Mike and Desiree Dickey of Belleville Seven Grandchildren- David Dasher of Belleville Chandra Dane and Jeremy Howard of Centralia Paige Dickey and Russell Arndt of Marion Katie and Josh Gass of Fairview Heights Michaela Dickey and Jake Stafford of St. Louis, Missouri Corey Dickey of Panama City, Florida Wesley Dickey of Panama City, Florida Great Grandchildren- seven Brother and Sister-in-law- Amon and Marilyn White of Metropolis
She was preceded in death by her parents, son- Robbie Dickey, brother- Jess White, Jr., and her grandson- Justin Dickey.

Timothy Lee Darnell - October 05, 1962 - March 30, 2022

Obituary Preview: Timothy Lee Darnell, age 59, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 9:50 am on March 30, 2022 at his home in Mount Vernon.
Timothy was born October 5, 1962 in Germany, the son of the late James and Doris (Saughae) Darnell. He married Thelma Ham on March 24, 1984 in Benton, Illinois. She survives.
Timothy is also survived by his daughter, Robin Davis and husband, David of Branson, Missouri; son, Dustin Darnell and wife, Angel of Mount Vernon, Illinois; son, Travis Darnell; siblings, James "Jim"  Darnell of Thompsonville, Illinois, Tammy Todich of West Frankfort, Illinois, Connie Freeman of West Frankfort, Illinois; several nieces and nephews including, Jesse James Darnell and Rebecca Wilkins; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Prior to his retirement, Timothy had worked as an auto mechanic. His love of cars and tinkering on them always remained. He liked monster trucks especially, Big Foot.
Timothy will be dearly missed by all those that knew and loved him.
A private family gathering was held in the slumber room of Maxton-Rosado Funeral Home where the family shared in wonderful memories and said their final good-byes to a most wonderful and loving man prior to cremation rites.

Sonnie Dempke - May 22, 1941 - February 08, 2022

Obituary Preview: Sherrill L. “Sonnie” Dempke, age 80, of Du Quoin, passed away at 2:35 am on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at Du Quoin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Sherrill was born at Kaskaskia Island on May 22, 1941, the son of Henery and Ruth (Kreilter) Dempke. He married Audrey L. (Owens) Lynn in Cutler, Illinois on December 31, 1995.
Sonnie was a United States Army Veteran. Prior to his retirement, he made many friends while working jobs he enjoyed, including manager of Hills Hardware in Du Quoin, bartender of the bowling alley, truck driver, and even a metal polisher. Sonnie was a big part, and very active in, the VFW, where he also served as bartender.  He was a proud member of the Storm Rider Motorcycle Club, allowing him to embrace his love of Harley Davidson motorcycles. Survivors include his wife- Audrey L. Jean Brewer - June 11, 1923 - February 06, 2022

Obituary Preview: Mary Jean Brewer, age 98, of Du Quoin, went to her Lord at 6:25am on Sunday, February 6, 2022. She passed away peacefully, at home, surrounded by her loving family. Jean was born on June 11, 1923 in Bedford, Indiana, the daughter of Orval and Ruth (Walton) Swango. She married Kenneth Eugene Brewer in Indiana in 1940.  He preceded her in death on August 6, 1987.  She leaves behind two daughters- Ann Heaton and her husband Mike and Judy Stroyeck and her husband Mike, five grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and six great great grandchildren who think the world of her!
Jean was a faithful member of the Du Quoin Church of Christ. She also was a big fan of “Swamp People” and alligators. In her spare time, she enjoyed yard sales and her cherished friendships that went with them. Jean has left a big hole in many hearts.
Family and friends are invited to gather for a time of remembrance and celebration of Jean’s life. The visitation will be held from 2-4pm on Saturday, February 12, 2022 at Maxton-Rosado Funeral Home; 11 S. Hickory Street; Du Quoin, IL 62832.  Inurnment will take place at a later date at Old Du Quoin Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Twila Renee Davis, age 66, of Du Quoin, formerly of Chester, passed away unexpectedly at 6:22pm on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.
Twila was born in Red Bud on December 21, 1955, the daughter of Lester and Dora (Gerlach) Eggemeyer.  She married Gene Davis in Pinckneyville on August 11, 1997. Together, they have shared more than 24 years of marriage and precious memories.
Twila had worked for Zeigler Coal, Technicolor, and most recently at Marshall Browning Estates, where the patients she helped care for were adored as if they were family.  She loved her job at Marshall Browning as it fit in so well with who she truly was. A caregiver at heart, Twila spent her life taking care of others. She was selfless, generous, and loving, living her life and acting from her heart. Twila loved everything in nature from her love of hummingbirds to deer hunting. She will be dearly missed by all those that knew and loved her. Survivors include her husband- Gene Davis Son- Robert Hood Daughter- Staci (Zach) Gooden and their daughter Whitley Twila Gooden Son- Ronnie (Amber) Davis, Jr. and their children Ronnie Davis III (RGD3) and Charli Renee Davis Daughter- Marla (Daniel) Sullivan and their son Jordan (Karley) Sullivan and daughter Danielle (Tyler) Slone with their children Kael,  Clayton,  and Corbin Son- Billy Davis and his two sons- Codey Davis and Corey (Cindy) Davis with their children Nevaeh and Liam

Twila leaves such a legacy in all her children and grandchildren by the examples and way she graciously lived her life. Not only for her namesake given to many of her descendants, but also in the values instilled in each one of them to surely be passed on for generations to come. Twila Renee will live on through her beautiful children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Howard was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the son of Theodore R. and Bertha Mae (Hann). He married Kathryn Louise Lewis in Apache Junction, Arizona on April 14, 2001. She survives in Du Quoin.  Prior to moving to Du Quoin, Howard was a long-time resident of Wilcox, Arizona.
Howard had worked as a construction engineer. He was a Korean War Veteran, having proudly served his country in the United States Army. Obituary Preview: Cathy Marie Schweizer, age 65, of Carbondale, formerly of Pinckneyville, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones, on Thursday, December 9, 2021.
Cathy was born on February 13, 1956 in Richmond, Indiana, the daughter of Pearl (Holland) and Lewis T. “Tracy” Schweizer, Sr.  A graduate of Pinckneyville High School, Cathy was known for her athleticism, especially in softball, which also carried over to her college career at Southern Illinois University. While at SIU, she earned a bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees. She recently retired from the Center for Senior Renewal at Murphysboro where she had worked as a licensed clinical counselor.
Cathy was an avid reader. She enjoyed her flower garden but always looked forward with excitement to her weekends of arrowhead hunting in the fields with friends. She loved her cats, but more than anything she loved her family and any time spent with them, making memories to cherish. With a sunny disposition, Cathy had a sense of humor that will forever be missed. She could always see the positive and make light of even the darkest situations. She will be missed dearly by all those that knew and loved her.
Survivors include her life partner and best friend- Tammy Pesek of Carbondale; Tammy’s daughters, which she considered as her own- Heather Pesek of Carbondale, Jennifer Pesek of Carterville, and Stephanie Purvis of Paducah, Kentucky; Four Grandchildren- Andrew, Addison, Jenna, and Jaxson Pesek; Two great grandchildren- Kinley Cobb and Alina Pesek; Two brothers and sisters-in-law- Lewis T. Schweizer, Jr and his wife Louise of Pinckneyville, and Darrell G. Schweizer and his wife Shirley of Coulterville; One sister and brother-in-law- Polly M. Zeigler and her husband David of O’Fallon; Special friend that was raised as a sister- Nancy Kuhnert of Carmi; Second mother- Ann Kuhnert of Oakdale; and Several Nieces and Nephews and numerous Cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one great granddaughter- Kylah Cobb.

Obituary Preview: Melvin Dean Allen, age 68, of Du Quoin, passed away peacefully at 7:25pm on Saturday, October 30, 2021 at St. Joseph Hospital in St. Charles, Missouri, surrounded by his loving family.
Melvin, Dean as most people knew him, was born in Cairo on July 24, 1953, the son of Clarence William and Mary Jane (Baggett) Allen. He married Karen Sue Gibson in Cairo on September 27, 1973. Together, they have shared more than 48 years of marriage.
Mr. Allen was a passionate member of the Spirit of Life Church in Du Quoin,  where he cherished his church family. A hard worker, Dean had worked previously at various jobs including fireman, dog catcher, and parking attendant for the state fairgrounds.  He enjoyed hunting at Campbell Pond and anything having to do with wildlife. Dean never met a stranger and will be dearly missed by all his family and many friends. A time of food and fellowship will immediately follow the services at the church. Final arrangements have been entrusted to Maxton-Rosado Funeral Home in Du Quoin. Jerry was born in Sparta on February 13, 1943, the son of John Newton and Osa Jane (Bird) Kelly. He was united in marriage to Cheryl J. Reidelberger on Oct. 13, 1972, in Bastrop, Louisiana. She preceded him in death on September 17, 2004. Together, they shared thirty-two years of marriage.
Jerry was a proud United States Army Veteran, having served from 1965-1967. Prior to his retirement, he had worked as a production scheduler at Decca/MCA/Universal Records in Pinckneyville for many years. Survivors include- Daughter and son-in-law- Amanda Jean and Wayne Reynolds of Pinckneyville Son- John Patrick Kelly of Coulterville Two Grandchildren- Ava and Gabe Hackworth of Pinckneyville Raised like a sister- Janet Horner of Coulterville
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife.

Betty was born in Carbondale on Christmas Day, December 25, 1935, the daughter of Thomas and Eulah "Dee" (Cross) Bailey. She married William Joseph Prowell in Kentucky in 1952. He preceded her in death on April 23, 1971.
Betty knew the value of working hard. She had worked at the shoe factory in Murphysboro as well as the Gilster-Mary Lee Plant. Even more so, Betty knew the value of a loving family. She cherished her family and time spent with them. Vickie lived life every day as a hard working single mother, doing what needed to be done to raise her family. She never felt her day was complete if she did not get her fair share of sweat in. In her spare time, she loved anything related to the outdoors, gardening, bird watching, and her scenic hiking trips to Giant City State Park.  She loved being in nature and the peace it provided.
Vickie was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Du Quoin. She is survived by her loving family including- Daughter- Holly Horton of Carbondale Daughter-Sarah Horton and Mark Szczeblewski of Du Quoin Daughter- Amanda "Lou" and J.D. Smith of Florida Ten Grandchildren Three Great Grandchildren Four sisters- Charlotte Lively, Kathy Wayer, Becky McClanahan, and Gail Crane One brother- Howard Steeley Multiple Nieces and Nephews

Deborah Sue Stowers - May 08, 1960 - July 27, 2021

Obituary Preview: Deborah Sue (Bower) Stowers was given the breath of life on May 8, 1960, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro, Illinois.
As the youngest child of the late Edward Carl and late Alma Ruth (Gale) Bower, Sue grew up at the foot of Buttermilk Hill in Jackson County, Illinois along with her brother Ed Bower, Jr. and sister Gail (Bower) Atherton. Both of who still survive.
She attended public school in Gorham, Illinois (class of 1978) and later went on to obtain her college degree in healthcare. Helping and caring for others was her life. She was fulfilled by helping those less fortunate than herself and those with mental or physical challenges; most recently serving as a supervisor at Goldplate in DuQuoin until her illness prevented her. She was always a fighter and never gave up, no matter what the odds appeared to be.
Sue loved traveling, fishing, gardening vegetables and flowers, collecting cast iron cookware and Fire-King Jadeite, and caring for her cat and miniature poodle, Ellie.
Her greatest success was her five children- Mike Hobbs, Travis (Becky) Hill, Kris (Lacy) Hill, Cole (Stephanie) Williams, Garret (Katy) Williams. Sue’s spirit is carried on by her five boys, thirteen adorable grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, numerous family members, and countless friends from every walk of life, including a special friend Janet Maxton.
She is also survived by her husband and best friend, Joe Stowers, who provided her with many years of happiness with his unwavering love and affection, giving her emotional support and comfort throughout her years-long fight with cancer, through to the very end; and for that her children are forever grateful.
Sue began her eternal life on July 27, 2021 at 5:50am, where she passed away peacefully at home. She will forever be remembered and loved by her family and friends. Keep her memory close, as we do, in your mind and your spirit.
As per her wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. The family will hold a private celebration of life at a later date.  Maxton-Rosado Funeral Home in Du Quoin is assisting the family with final arrangements.

Mr. Minnick had proudly served his country in the United States Army. Prior to his retirement, Ken had worked as a bidding subcontractor, specializing in painting and roofing. Janet was an avid gardener, loving flowers and hummingbirds. She adored her furbabies and liked to spend time shopping on QVC and eating out with the family. What she treasured most, were her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her greatest accomplishment in life was leading by example to teach her family to be strong, loving, supportive and independent. Traits that will pass down from her for generations. She will be greatly missed by all those that knew and loved her.
