Marilyn Joy Tuer - April 02, 1937 - May 13, 2024

Departed: 05/13/2024 (East Syracuse)
Obituary Preview: Marilyn (Lounsbury) Tuer, 87, passed away surrounded by family and friends May 13, 2024.
Marilyn was known by many different names, but was known by many who loved her as Baba and Miss Daisy.
She wore many different hats throughout her life. From business owner, to care giver, to a beloved mom, grandma, and great grandma.
She was vivacious, full of life, and the most stubborn woman you would ever meet. She loved getting in the car and going on adventures, even if it meant just driving until she was lost and having a grand time finding her way back home (but if you ask her, she was never actually lost).
Marilyn loved her family and friends deeply. She truly had a heart of gold, and was always willing to help out whenever needed. Her life revolved around care and concern for those she loved, and we will be forever grateful for all the things she did for us throughout our lives.
She was predeceased by her sister (Sonya) and daughter (Kimberly). She is survived by her son Charles Seidel (Kathryn Geck), granddaughters Kathryn Menustik, Colleen Pilcher, and Rachel Pilcher, and her great grandchildren Jamie Scott, Althea Stolz, and Samuel Stolz, as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life will be held at 1:00pm on July 21st at Marilyn's home in Pompey. Leave condolences for the family on the Tribute Wall

She was born with Down Syndrome during a time in the world where families were told to leave their precious family members at a facility and forget about them.Kris’s parents, Elizabeth and Rupert, ignored the recommendation and brought their daughter home, raising her just as they raised their other seven children.
Kris was a pioneer, forging many paths for people with disabilities who came after her. She was the first student with Down Syndrome to receive a certificate of completion at Liverpool High School. After graduating, she worked at several places until she found her dream job as an administrativeassistant, answering phones, greeting guests, and delivering the mail at CNY DSO. Her pleasant personality and daily compliments made her the perfect person to welcome visitors and fellow employees each day.
In 1987, she met the love of her life, Paul DeForge, at an ARC of Onondaga dance. After a five-year engagement, they were married in 1993, becoming the first couple, both with Down Syndrome, to marry in the United States. They were married for twenty-five blissful years. Kris had many hobbies, an extensive library of recipe books, and a vast knowledge of all the master chefs. She was very artistic, creating colorful pictures and hand-copied recipe books for special family members and friends. Compliments were her specialty. She found goodness and beauty in everyone, and her sincerity brought goodwill and smiles to all she met. Rummy was her life-long passion, and her frequent winning streaks earned her the nickname of Lucky Ducky. When she took occasional liberties with the rules, she was called Sneaky Peeky.”

Special thanks to Sharon Darton, Rosemary Neri, Donna (Angel) Aikens, Ann McCarthy, Lou Maury, Gary Schulterbrand, Rosemary Burke, Marilee Hill, and especially, Jeff Sutch, a fierce advocate, who accompanied Kris and Paul on their honeymoon and played an enormous role in normalizing their lives as married people.
Kris will be dearly missed, but her grace and kindness will be forever remembered. As we weep on earth, there will be joy and dancing in heaven.
Good-bye sweet princess. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

Tiffany Marie Karlik - November 27, 1980 - April 22, 2024

Departed: 04/22/2024 (East Syracuse)
Obituary Preview: Tiffany Marie Karlik, age 43, passed away Monday, April 22, 2024, with her beloved husband and older sister and one of her dearest friends by her side. Tiff had infinite love for everyone but her two small children were paramount. It meant everything to her to love her children unconditionally, whether it was ensuring they had deep relationships with their extended family and her dear friends, planning meticulously themed birthday parties to bring them joy or spending happy hours as a family watching Bluey and Kids Baking Championship.
She also was the rock who held everyone together in her extended family and in her group of friends. The key to being the glue to so many people was not only her love but her goofy, spunky personality, her vivacity and vibrancy, her silly sense of humor, her wit and her never-ending compassion. With one lift of her famous Tiff eyebrow, she would tell you exactly what she thought without saying a word. Because of her open heart, she had an ever expanding circle of friends throughout her life.
Tiff’s love for her children fueled her will for a difficult two-year battle with metastatic breast cancer that failed to respond long to any form of treatment. She kept her vow to her husband to tackle things head on together during those difficult days. She made sure to savor every day that she had, especially with her children. She exhausted every chemotherapy known. Tiff was one of the first patients to undergo presurgical radiation. She took trial drugs off-trial to give herself a chance to beat cancer. Despite all these difficulties, she fought hard every day just to have one more day for her family.
Tiff was extraordinary in that she had both emotional intelligence and scientific brilliance. She brought both her heart and her intellect to bear when her daughter was born with a heart defect that required surgery as a young child. She used her scientific acumen to read and understand the scientific literature about her daughter’s heart defect and her breast cancer, and she would draw diagrams of her daughter’s heart condition. She was an organ donor and wanted her body to benefit scientific research. She had incredible intellectual curiosity and loved to be able to solve hard problems.
Tiff graduated as valedictorian of John Marshall High School in Rochester in 1999.
She earned a full scholarship to Rochester Institute of Technology from which she graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in microelectronic engineering in 2005. Among other companies at which she worked as a microelectronic engineer were Qimonda in Virginia and Smart System Technology and Commercialization Center in Canandaigua, which later was sold to Akoustis Technologies.
Most recently, she was a process engineer at NexGen Power Systems in East Syracuse. She was their first employee hired in New York State and key to procuring and developing an essential machine in their processing. At NextGen, she became a senior principal process engineer in April 2022. It was important to her to mentor the next generation of young professionals in the STEM career field, whether it was relatives, students participating in the FIRST robotics program at Hanover
High School in Virginia, or students doing their coop education in her workplaces. It was yet another example of her infinite love.
Tiff is survived by her adoring children and husband, as well as a large extended family and many devoted friends. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date.

Nancy G. Schmitt - November 28, 1954 - March 09, 2024

Departed: 03/09/2024 (East Syracuse)
Obituary Preview: Nancy G. Schmitt, 69, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2024 with family by her side.  She was born in Geneva, NY to Rosemarie (Cole) and the late James R. Lamphier.  Her early childhood was spent in Warners, NY with her parents and three younger siblings until the death of her father James in 1963 changed the course of her family’s life.  Four years later, her mom married a second time to John L. Martineau, gaining a new Dad and three new brothers.
Nancy’s newly blended family moved to Morrisville, NY, to a small farm with horses, dogs, chickens, ducks and cows. She attended and graduated from Morrisville-Eaton Central School in 1974, where she picked up lifelong friendships, and completed an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration at SUNY Morrisville.  She met her husband, Tom, when he and his parents moved to Morrisville, right next door to Nan’s family home.  Their connection was immediate, and they married three months later.
She worked for Gerritt Smith Infirmary, SUNY Morrisville, Colgate University, Leavenworth Prison in Kansas, and the Earlville Methodist Church in Earlville, NY. The longest, most recent and most satisfying of her employments was with St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Hamilton, NY, which effectively became a second family and second home to her. She was the embodiment of a welcoming spirit, seamlessly turning new acquaintances into lasting friendships.
Nancy loved life, all things family and friends, past and present, old and new.  She loved gardening, house plants, cooking, cleaning (yep), homemaking – literally the force behind the updating or renovating of three old houses, transforming them into inviting comfortable homes, and was all-in when any of her children were looking for or establishing their homes. She loved family gatherings and social events, and if there wasn’t one in the immediate future, she’d make one happen.  Nancy simply adored her grandchildren and took every opportunity to be with them as frequently as possible.  She was restlessly optimistic and happy; she loved life and it loved her back.
Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Thomas P. Schmitt, their children and their spouses as well as 16 grandchildren; Rachel and Jeff Knapp, their children Jake, Josh, and Madelyn; Rebecca Hubbard and her children, Layla, Isaac, Eden, and Mea; Joseph Schmitt and Emma Golden and their children, Oren and Adele; Jessica and Stanley Dakosty, Jr. and their children, Stanley III, Nora, and Thomas; Laura Schmitt and Austin Axtell and their newborn Juniper; and finally Leah Schmitt and Chris Brockway and their children, Drew, Elsie, and Cillian.
Also surviving are her mother, Rosemarie Martineau; her siblings, Michael and Ruth Martineau and their family; Christopher and Ellen Lamphier and their family; Steven and Bobbi Jo Martineau and their family; Catherine Lamphier; David and Kristina Martineau and their family; and Andrew Lamphier and his family.  Nancy is also survived by her special lifelong friends, Deborah Radford Moudarres, Brenda Almonte, Susan Chapin, Tara Truett, Debbie Springer, Deb Curtis, April Cascione, and Carolyn Tucker, all of whom supported her and lifted her spirits throughout this difficult illness.  There are innumerable other friends and cousins that would fill pages if all were listed.
Nancy was predeceased by her father, James R. Lamphier in 1963; her stepdad, John L. Martineau in 2016; her parents-in-law, Joseph and Elsie Schmitt; paternal grandmother Ruth Evelyn Lamphier; maternal grandparents, Ira and Anna Cole; son-in-law, Joseph M. Hubbard, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins on both sides of the family.
Nancy's memorial celebration will be held on March 23, 2024 at the St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Hamilton, NY. Calling hours will begin at 9 am, followed at 10 am with a short service in the church.  Interment will be immediately after the service in the Memorial Garden beside the church.  A reception in the Parish House Community Room will follow.  All are welcome to any or all of the Memorial plans.  It was Nancy’s wish to keep the formalities brief and the celebration perpetual! Any monetary donations may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 12 ½ Madison St., Hamilton, NY 13346, in Nancy’s honor, with the intention of starting a fund for needed renewal of the kitchen/community room at St. Thomas. We know Nancy would enjoy being a part of one more renovation! Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and other biographical information. It may also include details about their life, achievements, and surviving family members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a permanent record of a person's life and legacy.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or crematorium may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to use.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include details about their life story, accomplishments, and charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a short paragraph.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

The process for submitting an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Check their website or contact their customer service department for specific guidelines and deadlines.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication or platform. Some newspapers charge by the word or line, while others offer package deals or discounts for online-only publications.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told in your own words.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, typically including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that includes additional biographical information and personal anecdotes.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including humorous anecdotes or personality traits can make the obituary more engaging and reflective of the person's true spirit.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues or family conflicts involved, it's best to approach the situation with tact and discretion. Consider consulting with other family members or a trusted advisor before finalizing the obituary.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes, including meaningful quotes or song lyrics can add depth and personality to the obituary. Just be sure to verify the accuracy of the quote and obtain any necessary permissions.

How do I proofread an obituary?

Carefully review the obituary for spelling, grammar, and factual errors before submitting it for publication. Ask multiple people to review it as well to catch any mistakes.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult or impossible to make changes to an obituary once it's been published. Be sure to double-check the information before submitting it.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Online platforms may publish immediately, while print newspapers may have a longer delay.

What is an online obituary?

An online obituary is a digital version of a traditional print obituary. It may include additional features such as photos, videos, guestbooks, and donation links.

How do online obituaries differ from traditional print obituaries?

Online obituaries offer greater flexibility in terms of length, format, and multimedia content. They also allow for easier sharing and access by friends and family around the world.

Can I create my own online memorial page?

Yes! Many websites offer tools and templates for creating personalized online memorial pages. These can be a meaningful way to honor your loved one and share memories with others.

How do I find old obituaries?

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who was young or died suddenly?

Yes. When writing an obituary for someone who died young or suddenly, it's especially important to be sensitive to the grieving family and focus on celebrating their life rather than dwelling on their death.

Can I include charitable donation information in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers can be a meaningful way to honor your loved one's legacy and support a good cause.

How do I handle cultural or religious differences when writing an obituary?
