Betty June Fales - June 12, 1926 - May 09, 2024

Departed: 05/09/2024 (Palatka)
Obituary Preview: BETTY JUNE FALES
Betty June Fales, 97, of Satellite Beach (formerly of Palatka), went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, May 9, 2024 after living a full, active, and blessed life. Betty was born on June 12, 1926 in Pimento, Indiana to Daisy and Grover Williams. She was the baby of four siblings, Imogene, Maxine and Garland. She was very close to her mother following the death her father when she was just seven years old. Fortunately, they lived on a farm, and she often related the hardships of growing up during the Great Depression, having only a single doll, wearing dresses made from flour sacks, and selling duck eggs for candy money.
When she was 18, Betty met the love of her life, Navy sailor Joe Fales in Bloomington, IN. He bought her a Tom Collins, danced to the song "Stardust," and they fell in love. They married six weeks later and stayed devoted to each other for the next 70 years. First living in Battle Creek, MI., Betty gave birth to a daughter, Sherry Jo, but she lived for only five days and her passing was forever painful. Subsequently, she had three boys, Randy, Greg, and Jeff; raising the two older boys alone, while Joe was deployed for eighteen months during the Korean War. She always said, "We didn't have much but there was always love."
In 1956, the Fales moved to Florida and by chance, settled in Palatka. They bought a piece of property on West River Road and lived there for the next 59 years.
Besides raising a family and being a neighborhood mom, Betty worked and retired from the Putnam County School System. Following their retirement, Betty and Joe traveled extensively around the country in their RV and found it easy to develop many new friendships with fellow travelers.
She loved dancing and took every opportunity to get on the floor. Renown for her noodles at Thanksgiving and chocolate peanut butter balls and peanut brittle at Christmas, she was an excellent cook in the tradition of her sisters and Mimi. She loved living on the river and sharing her life with her special neighbors on Eberhardt Avenue. She was a prolific reader and consumed hundreds of books. Strong spiritually and in her faith, she especially found comfort in her church.
Following the passing of her dear husband in 2015, Betty moved to Indian Harbour Beach, FL to be near her son and family. For the next few years, Betty enjoyed her new life with her granddaughters and many great grandkids. Betty is survived by her sons, Randy (Dianne), granddaughters, Kim, Kelley (John), Kristen (Hanano), Kara, Courtney (Trevor), and Carleigh (Bob); son, Greg (Connie), grandsons, Jody and Jason (Deborah); and son, Jeff (Leighan), grandsons, Jacob (Eva) and Justin (Kelly), and granddaughter, Jami (Cliff). And she will be dearly missed by her many great-grandchildren: Lauren (Josh and great-great granddaughter Olivia), Allison (Zac), Shane, Brett, Riley, Hayes, Beau, Brooke, Blake, Brittany (Sam), Kendall, Gavin, Jude, and Hayden
She will also be missed by her cherished nieces and nephews, Dodie (Jerry), Clara Lou (Tommy Dale), Warren (Peggy), Sandy, Karen (Sam), Gary (Jane), Phyllis, and Frances Ann (Jack).
The family will host a Celebration of Life for Betty on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Masters Funeral Home in Palatka. The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 10:00 a.m. – an hour prior to the start of the service. Betty will be interred with her beloved Joe at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery on June 5, 2024 at 1:00 p.m.

Virginia Mckee Methvin - December 07, 1934 - April 28, 2024

Departed: 04/28/2024 (Palatka)
Obituary Preview: VIRGINA “GINGER” METHVIN
Virginia McKee “Ginger” Methvin of Palatka passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, a Shands UF Health Hospital on Sunday, 28 April 2024, after a brief illness. She was a treasured wife and mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend.
Born the youngest of six children in the midst of the Great Depression in Mobile, Alabama in 1934, Ginger spent her early years in Fernandina Beach. She was named Virginia after her mother, but her father nicknamed her Gingersnap, and the moniker stuck. She liked to tell about how her father renamed everyone, including his own children. Her brother Alton became “Pete” because, when their father read the newspaper to the kids every evening, Alton always harangued him to skip ahead to the Peter Rabbit cartoon. Ginger also had a cat whose name she couldn’t recall, because her father had decided that the kitty walked like one of his coworkers did and he started calling the creature by the man’s name. So Fluffy (or whatever Ginger had named the cat) became P. Lawson. Evidently, he was satisfied with their dog Cornbread’s given name.
When Ginger was a teenager, her family moved to Palatka, where she lived for the next 75+ years until her death. She was angry with her father for uprooting her from the city to a small town, but she soon forgave him, because it was in Palatka that she met and married the charming and movie-star handsome Bill Methvin.
Both Bill and Ginger loved children and had enormous hearts so when they found that they couldn’t have their own biological children, they lovingly and enthusiastically adopted two boys and a girl. They probably wanted to return each of them for a refund a couple of times over the years, like when their daughter Laura informed Ginger one evening in 1980, the night before she was to recite a passage from Stuart Little at school, that she needed a mouse costume by the next morning. Despite probably being exhausted from having worked all day at her job as receptionist for optometrist Dr. Hal Hall and having cooked dinner for the family, Ginger bought supplies and stayed up late into the night braiding a tail out of black yarn and sewing it onto the back of a leotard and digging out the Mickey Mouse ears from Disney World that were stored somewhere in a closet. Ginger and Bill’s love for their children and for each other was boundless. The couple were married for 54 years, until Bill’s death in 2007. She was the sensible, realistic one, and Bill was the dreamer who brought fun and adventure to their lives. Their roles somewhat reversed for a day when Bill taught Ginger to drive a car when they were both teenagers. As Ginger told the story, they raced across a field with Ginger in the driver’s seat, but the steering wheel suddenly came off in her hands, and away they careened. (This foreshadowed Ginger’s driving style in her 80s.)
They were a perfect pair, and Ginger missed Bill terribly and spoke of him every day after he passed away, right up until her own passing. She often told anyone who would listen what a genius he was and how he had built their home and added onto it as their family grew. These stories grew to supplant her constant refrains when Bill was alive, such as, “Bill, I’ve told you and told you not to slam the back door!” and “Shut the car door! Were you born in a barn?” For the record, Daddy grew up on a farm, so for all we know, he may indeed have been born in an actual barn. But he did everything he could to make Ginger happy, and vice versa, continual battles over doors notwithstanding.
Ginger was always very active, serving as an inspiration to her no-account kids not to lie around and be lazy. (This inspiration was far more evident in Danny than in Kenny and Laura.) Ginger was a league bowler in the 1970s, traveling with her teammates to tournaments, where they won many awards and trophies. In the early 1980s, she also began jogging 2 miles a day every day before dawn at the Ravine Gardens State Park. When she was in her 70s, her knees finally forced her to downshift from jogging to walking. But she continued walking the Ravine every day and working out at the gym until age 83, when she fell and broke her leg and began using a walker.
She loved children, cooking, traveling, fishing and going to the beach. She should have donated her body to science so researchers could study how on earth she escaped getting skin cancer after decades in the sun with no more than an occasional coat of SPF 4 Coppertone.
She and her husband traveled together to destinations including London, Quebec, The Grand Ole Opry, Jamaica, Washington, DC, New York City, Philadelphia, and the Maine coast. After they retired, they took a trip together out West, seeing all the sights from Glacier National Park to Kansas sunflowers to Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon to Yellowstone, Yosemite, and the California coast. She took 12 rolls of film on the trip, and most of the photos are out of focus. But the memories were clear in her mind, and she often shared them with friends and family, clearly missing her traveling companion.
Her Southern cooking was legendary. It was one of her bitterest regrets in the last years of her life that she was no longer physically able to cook, because it brought her genuine joy (as it did all those lucky enough to taste her scrumptious dishes). No doubt another of her bitterest regrets was that her daughter Laura is one of the worst cooks who ever darkened a kitchen door. It wasn’t Ginger’s fault; she tried, but Laura was untrainable. We don’t have scientific proof that Laura’s failed attempt at cooking Ginger’s lasagna recipe poisoned her, but even the feral cats out back wouldn’t touch the leftovers. But as always, Ginger gratefully pretended it was better than it was, just as she did with every truly revolting meal her daughter prepared for her.
Both Bill and Ginger were faithful Christians and were members of the Palatka Church of Christ. Ginger loved attending church, where she sang both soprano and alto in the congregational singing.
In her later years, Ginger also enjoyed going out for lunch and a manicure with her good friend of many years, Kay. Whenever she was in hospital or rehab, she’d constantly fret about needing to get her nails and hair done. Her daughter was giving her a manicure in her hospital bed when Ginger passed away.
As much of a girly girl as she was, Ginger was also a big fan of the University of Florida Gators football team. She looked forward to football season every year and enjoyed watching the games on TV. She had memorabilia including a Gator blanket, Gator pendant, Gators address labels, a Gators mailbox, Gator coasters, Gator t-shirts, and Gator socks, among other kitschy items. Her heirs will have to wrestle over who gets her bedazzled Gators sneakers. She was also an ardent music fan. She and a friend won a singing contest put on by a local radio station in Jacksonville when they were schoolgirls. She was always singing aloud or humming, often with a playfully silly affect. Ginger attended concerts into her 80s, including having seen both Willie Nelson and Tony Bennett live twice with her daughter Laura. In the car on the way to and from her many doctor appointments in Gainesville in her later years, she always asked Laura to play the Dean Martin Pandora channel. Sometimes they’d put on the Willie Nelson channel, and, no matter how much her back or neck or legs were hurting or how tired she was, Ginger would always sing along at full volume to “Mamas, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys.”
Although she wasn’t much of a cat person and didn’t really want anyone in her house who shedded and couldn’t clean up after herself, she and her daughter’s cat Betty fell in love with each other almost from the moment Laura and Betty moved in with Ginger in 2015. They were two peas in a pod, primarily because they both loved to nap. Betty sorely misses snuggling in Grandmommy’s lap, receiving the best head rubs, and curling up against Grandmommy in bed. Laura’s precious other cat, Ruby, whom Ginger didn’t like because Betty doesn’t like her, could not be reached for comment.
Most of all, Ginger loved being a wife, mother, grandmother & great grandmother. She is survived by her two sons, William Daniel (Dan) Methvin of Palatka and Kenneth Liston (Kenny) Methvin of Kissimmee; her daughter, Laura Methvin of Palatka; six grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William L. (Bill) Methvin; her parents, Daniel Boone McKee and Millie Virginia McKee of Palatka; two brothers, Charles E. McKee of Palatka and Alton (Pete) McKee of Alabama; and three sisters, Mrs. Gloria (Dodie) Strickland of Palatka, Mrs. Grace Routzong of Winter Haven, and Mildred M. (Mickey) Mulhall of Palatka.

Burial will follow in Palatka Memorial Gardens.
