Michael N. Connolly - March 26, 1944 - May 13, 2024

Departed: 05/13/2024 (Suttons Bay)
Obituary Preview: Michael N. Connolly Died May 13, 2024
GILLS PIER- Michael Neil Connolly, 80, of Northport, passed away on May 13, 2024, at his home on Gill’s Pier Road surrounded by his loving family. Mike was born on March 26, 1944, in Flint, to John (Jack) and Barbara (Gourdie) Connolly.
Born and raised in Flint, Mike spent his childhood collecting baseball cards and ice fishing with family. He graduated from Flint Southwestern high school.
He attended Michigan State University, where he earned a Ph.D in Sociology, though he refused to ever be called doctor. In a political science class, Mike met Jeremy Lynn Thomas. She would become his best friend and the love of his life. Thanks in large part to dear family friend Charlie Emery who helped orchestrate (or rather reorchestrate) the match, Mike married Jeremy in 1968 in Pittsburgh, PA. Professionally, Mike was proud of his work with the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians (GTB). In the 1980s, Mike and Jeremy moved to Leelanau County where Mike was hired as the interim tribal manager and later as the health and human services director for the GTB. Years later before leaving his job at the tribe, his longtime friend -- and then tribal chairman -- Buddy Raphael had this to say of Mike: “There are those among us that quietly go about the business of making this a better world to live in, without overt expectation of praise or reward, save for the internal satisfaction derived from seeing something accomplished or someone becoming more self-actualized and successful.”
Mike is one of those rare people who ask for little and are willing to give all to the common cause of good among Native people...” He was later made an honorary member of the tribe and maintained lifelong friendships with many of his colleagues until he died. Mike also was proud of his work at Northwestern Michigan College where he coordinated the tutoring and special needs programs.
Throughout his life, Mike was known for his wit and willingness to talk to anyone, with countless inside jokes scattered across Leelanau County. He had a standing goal to “make someone smile everyday” and he took that commitment seriously. While not much for following the rules, Mike was rigidly ethical and lived according to his own code. He consistently prioritized family and had fun doing it. He would forfeit pay each summer to go on month-long road trips taking his kids to the 48 continental United States. He coached his daughter’s softball team each summer and played basketball with his son every chance he got. His most prized title was “Papa,” spending his early mornings with his grandson Raven Connolly, often serenading him with songs, much to Raven’s delight. Even as walking became difficult, he participated in as many outings, activities, and adventures with Raven as he could. He referred to Raven as his “joy.”
He loved life in Leelanau County and cherished “running into” friends around the county. Often with one of the family’s many dogs (Dune, Rosie, Lucas, Q, Franklin, and Ellie) by his side, he hiked Leelanau’s many trails.
He loved watching and supporting Northport students in sports and the arts, and never missed a senior project night.
Mike is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Jeremy; their children, Erin and Cory Connolly; grandson Raven Connolly; his brother John (Theresa) Connolly; a sister in law, Karen Liske; many nieces and nephews, and a vast extended family and network of dear friends, including Charlie and Maggie Emery and Sue and Steve Holmes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, in- laws Maurice and Mildred Thomas, sister Shannon Christie, brothers-in-law Donald Christie, Edward Liske, Maurice Thomas, sister-in-law Nancy Thomas, nephew Steve Thomas, and dear friends Rich Feinberg, Pete Seif, and Phyllis Wanegeshik.
The family will be hosting a gathering to remember Mike at Fischer’s Happy Hour Tavern (7100 N. Manitou Road) from 2pm to 6pm on May 25, 2024.

Neal E. Neese - February 16, 1936 - May 03, 2024

Departed: 05/03/2024 (Suttons Bay)
Obituary Preview: Neal Edward Neese Died May 3, 2024
CEDAR- Neal Edward Neese, 88, of Cedar, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2024, surrounded by his family at his home. Neal was born on February 16, 1936, on the Neese farm in Lapel, Indiana, to Lloyd and Velma (Bulen) Neese. He was united in marriage to Barbara Ann Rudolph on June 29, 1957, at the Speedway Christian Church in Indianapolis, Indiana. Barbara preceded him in death on February 15, 2024.
Neal graduated from Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis, Indiana (class of 1954 ), and earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the General Motors Institute in Flint Michigan in 1958. He enjoyed a successful career as a senior design and development engineer, working for Allison, General Motors, Oldsmobile, and B.O.C. until his retirement in 1991.
Active in his community, Neal was a member of the Little Traverse Lake Property Association and the NRA. Neal was also a faithful member of the Leland Community United Methodist Church and held strong political beliefs as a devoted Republican. Additionally, he was a proud member of the Alpha Gamma Upsilon Fraternity at GMI, joining in 1955.
The number one love of Neal's life was his wife of 66 years, Barbara, and he had passion for several things that came in a close second. Neal loved the game of golf – playing, watching on TV and talking about it. He was a member of two local golf leagues and loved to drive his mother's light blue 1979 Oldsmobile to the course. He shared his love of the sport with his grandsons and taught them all how to play. Occasionally they would get a better score than him and he would beam with pride. Deer hunting was another one of Neal's passions. Since he was young, he would spend two weeks every November deer hunting near Ralph in the Upper Peninsula, and later years in Minnesota at Stugie's Camp with his friend Stu Genung. He enjoyed his “deer camp” time regardless of his luck at bagging a buck. Cars; anyone who ever got corralled into a conversation with Neal soon realized that he loved to talk about cars. He could start talking about the fasteners holding the front bumper on and not stop talking until he was explaining the chrome nameplate on the trunk lid. He was loyal to General Motors and even after being retired for 33 years talked as if he were still part of the team. Another favorite thing was going out to eat. When family was visiting it was dinner out almost every night, and he and Barbara were no strangers to all the nice dining places in the area. Going to Market 22 was his latest favorite and Melanie treated Neal and Barbara like family. Boonedocks, Happy Hour and the Cove were also places he enjoyed treating family and friends. Never one to utilize the modern computers and smart phones Neal was big on reading, especially political reading. Any birthday or Christmas he received books among his gifts. Neal was a bit old fashioned and appreciated the simple things in life. Sailing, beach combing, hunting morel mushrooms, watching their grand kids play sports, driving his old MGA car, and watching the news channels on TV occupied a lot of his time.
Neal is survived by his two daughters, Julie Schubel and Jennifer (Rand) Hruska; his grandchildren, Justin Schubel, Carol Schubel, Timothy (Maggie) Hruska, and Joseph (Stacy) Hruska; and his great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Juliette, Ele, Noah, Logan, and Mia. He is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Barbara of 66 years, and his two brothers, Lloyd Neese Jr. and Don Neese.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, at the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay with visitation two hours prior at 9:00 a.m.
Burial will follow the service at the Cleveland Township Cemetery.

Theda T. Connell - April 29, 1927 - March 27, 2024

Departed: 03/27/2024 (Suttons Bay)
Obituary Preview: Theda Tanner Connell Died March 27, 2024
NORTHPORT-Theda Tanner Connell, 96, of Northport, passed away on March 27, 2024, in Grand Rapids. Theda was born on April 29, 1927, in Detroit, Michigan, to Edward and Margie (Adkins) Tanner. On June 27, 1948, at Lake Shore Presbyterian in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, she married Gilbert Fred Connell, who preceded her in death on October 6, 2000. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Hannah (George) Connell, daughter and son-in-law Robin Connell and Paul Brewer, and grandchildren Carrie Connell and Benny Brewer.
Long time Northport resident, Theda Connell, was very active in the area through the Lions Club, Northport Singers, Trinity UCC, the Grand Traverse Lighthouse, Questers, Northport Area Heritage Association, DAR, Habitat for Humanity, Friendship Force International and other groups.
Her passion was socializing with others whether within her family or interacting with friends through travel, church activities, service clubs, or genealogy. She and husband, Gilbert, named their retirement home in Northport “Habitacion Internationale” to celebrate and welcome guests from around the world. From an early age Theda was drawn to people from different cultures, observing their customs, languages, beliefs and religions. She was curious, always striving for meaningful connections, and never ignored the opportunity to learn about her world.
Theda grew up in St Clair Shores, MI, graduating from Lakeshore HS in 1944. She found a job in Detroit and saved her earnings to attend Western Michigan College, graduating with an Associates Degree in 1947.
In June 1948, she married Gilbert Connell, a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy, who served on Liberty Ships during World War II delivering fuel and cargo to our troops in the Pacific Theater. Theda and Gilbert started their family with son, Richard, born in 1950, and daughter, Robin, in 1956. Church was central to their marriage, and family life, including Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, Family camp, summer camp, singing in the church choir, and participating in social activism.
Theda was, by all accounts, a loving and loyal wife, mother, and daughter, devoted to each. In their last years of life, Theda provided significant care and love for her parents, her husband Gilbert, and her dear friend, Philip. In addition to her roles as wife, and mother, Theda also became a career woman, completing her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Child Development at Wayne State University in 1965. She created an innovative two-year vocational program in Early Childhood Education at Ferndale High School. The FHS Laboratory Nursery School was the first such program in Michigan and one of very few in the U.S. Her high school students, through textbook and observational studies, and working in the Nursery School (of which she was the Director), received their Early Childhood Education Certification along with their HS diplomas at graduation. She was recruited by Royal Oak Schools to then create a Laboratory Nursery School at SEOVEC (SE Oakland Vocational Ed Center). Throughout her career Theda freely shared her research and curriculum with people across the USA. In 1976, The American Home Economics Association, and Family Circle, awarded her the Home Economics Teacher of the Year Award for ‘Outstanding contributions in educational and community programs.’
After retirement, Theda and Gil were finally able to live full time in Northport, albeit keeping just as busy as they had been while employed. In addition to participation in many community activities, Theda and Gil enjoyed several years of travel, much of it for genealogical research or personal enrichment. Participation in Friendship Force, as hosts as well as visitors, provided the opportunity to meet people from around the world and long-term friendships blossomed with friends in Japan and Australia.
After Gilbert died, Theda continued to travel, with longtime friend Philip Kellogg, for a few more years. In 2008 Theda traveled, with Robin, to the Channel Islands of Guernsey and Jersey, to visit her father’s family one last time.
In her final year, Theda greatly enjoyed sitting on her patio (or viewing the outdoors from her window), with frequent phone calls from her son, and almost daily visits with her daughter and son-in-law. She deeply loved her grandchildren, Benny, and Carrie, glimpsing the future through their eyes. She struggled with the loss of many loved ones yet understood that such heavy loss comes with a long and meaningful life. Her heart was full of gratitude which she continually expressed to all who visited or cared for her physical needs.
Memorial donations in Theda's honor may be directed to the Northport Promise PO Box 292 Northport, MI 49670, Trinity Church, United Church of Christ PO Box 156 Northport, MI 49670, or Porter Hills Village 3600 Fulton St E, Grand Rapids, MI 49546.

Burial will follow the service at the Leelanau Township Cemetery.
Please share condolences and memories with the family at www.martinson.info.

LELAND - Spencer Allen Walters, 78, of Leland, passed away on March 26, 2024, in Traverse City. He was born on November 26, 1945, in Traverse City, Michigan, to Allen and Elsie (Rokos) Walters.
Spencer graduated from Central High School in Traverse City. After high school, he began working for Alka Tool and Die as a supervisor in Suttons Bay, where he spent several years with the company. Following the closure of the company, he moved to Pennsylvania and worked at Alcoa. It was during his time in Pennsylvania that he met and married his beloved wife, Gretchen (Gaughan) Walters, on February 14, 1997, in Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania. After twelve years in Pennsylvania, they relocated to Spencer's cherished home in Leland, in beautiful Northern Michigan.
Spencer was an avid solitary outdoorsman who had a deep love for nature and being outdoors. His favorite place in the world was next to the creek at their cabin in the woods on their property in Cleveland Township, where he enjoyed watching the local wildlife, including a bald eagle, bobcat, cougar, deer, and many squirrels. He was passionate about gardening and had a green thumb, cultivating both flowers and vegetables. Spencer enjoyed landscaping in his retirement and was always eager to tackle any project, never content to sit still.
