James O. "Sonny" Ash - Unknown - November 12, 2023

Obituary Preview: On November 12, 2023 at the age of 94, James Osmond (Sonny) Ash, of Callao, VA, transitioned from time into eternity. Sonny was raised in Perrin, VA by his father, James Henry Ash, and his mother, Marie Bristow Ash, both of whom predeceased him. After graduating from Fork Union Military Academy in 1947, he attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University. From 1950-1953, he served his country in the United States Coast Guard. He later graduated from the Echols College of Mortuary Science following in the footsteps of his grandfather in serving the people living in the community during their times of loss. In 1960, he became a co-owner in the Jones-Ash Funeral Home and also owned James O. Ash Memorials, both in Rainswood, VA.
In addition to serving his community through funeral service, Sonny was also active in the Lions Club, was a member of the Achilles Masonic Lodge 281, the Westmoreland Masonic Lodge 212, and the Shriners. Sonny served on the Fork Union Military Academy Board of Trustees for eight years and served for seven years on the Virginia Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers, including one year as President.
Sonny loved his Lord. He was active in Melrose United Methodist Church, including serving as a trustee for the church’s cemetery. He was also active at Lakewood Park United Methodist Church in Fort Pierce, FL while spending the winter months in Florida. He was deeply touched when the United Methodist Men at Lakewood Park UMC recognized him as a Life Member in 2012.
Sonny also loved his family. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Jackson Ash; his children, Pamela C. Ash (Andrew W. Gallagher), James B. Ash, Gen A. Hahn (Kim), Andrew H. Jones (Sue), and Beth Jones Childs. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Matthew Jones (Nicole Drozd), Kyle Jones (Becky), Tollie Appleby (Phillip), Elizabeth Winyall (Davey), and Parker Childs. In addition, he absolutely adored his great grandchildren, Owen, Jackson, Logan, Ashlynn, Brooks, Cathryn, Leah, and Gabe. He was also predeceased by his two sisters, Lavinia Ash Stuart and Lois Marie Ash Carr.
Visitations will be held on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, from 3:00-4:00PM and 6:00-8:00PM at Melrose United Methodist Church, 1317 Lewisetta Rd., Lottsburg, VA 22511, with a Masonic Service being held at 7:00PM. His funeral service will also be held at the church on Thursday, November 16, 2023, at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Melrose United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 150, Lottsburg, VA, 22511.

Lois Ann Bonhaus - Unknown - November 10, 2023

Obituary Preview: Lois Ann Bonhaus of Tappahannock, Virginia passed away on November 10, 2023, at the age of 80.
Lois Ann was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on June 18, 1943, to William Sammons and Anna Mae Sammons. While living in Cincinnati she married Dale Bonhaus on June 19, 1965. The couple welcomed 4 loving sons into the world. As the children grew up Lois Ann volunteered her time to the Cub Scouts as well as the Hamilton County Park District. She also volunteered as an EMT for nearly a decade. When the opportunity presented itself, she attended college with several of her sons where she earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting.
In 1998, Lois Ann and Dale moved to Tappahannock to start a new chapter. While living in Tappahannock, Lois Ann worked for Dillard and Katona Attorneys at Law as well as Saint Timothy Catholic Church. She also volunteered countless hours to the church while serving on Parish Council twice as well as being the Liturgy Committee chair. In her later years she enjoyed her hobbies of quilting and embroidery but her favorite thing to do was spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Lois Ann was preceded in death by her husband Dale Bonhaus. She is survived by her children Daryl Bonhaus (Kathleen), Edward Bonhaus (Penny), Kevin Bonhaus (Amanda) and James Bonhaus and grandchildren Riley Bonhaus and Addison Bonhaus.
Funeral services will be held at Saint Timothy Catholic Church on November 27, 2023, at 11:00am. A memorial Mass will be held in Cincinnati at a later date.

Judy Allen - May 22, 1956 - November 10, 2023

Obituary Preview: Judith Truslow Allen was called home to be with her Lord & Savior on November 10, 2023. She passed away in her home in Tappahannock surrounded by family. Judy will be forever remembered as a kind, funny, hardworking, and loyal person. She was in federal service for the United States Department of Agriculture for over three decades before retiring to assume full time family and grandma duty. This included taking great care and interest in her beloved dog, Polly and cat with nine lives, Rambo. Judy enjoyed reading locally-set mystery novels; binge-watching westerns on TV; creating arts and crafts, particularly for holidays, birthdays, and other celebrations; following sports events that her family participated in; gardening; and cooking, baking, and pickling during the summer months. She will be deeply missed.
Judy was the daughter of Henry Lee and Florence Chenault Truslow of Champlain, VA. She is survived by her two daughters, Jennifer Wilson (and husband Chris) and Laura Pica (and wife Alexis). "Grandma" and "Monie," as she was lovingly called, is also survived by her three beautiful granddaughters: Abbie, Emma, and Hazel; brother, Kenneth Lee Truslow (and his wife Faye), and her life-long friend and companion, John Allen.
The family will receive friends from 11:00am to 12:00pm on Tuesday, November 21, at Upper Essex Baptist Church with a memorial service following at 12:15pm.

CT was born to the late Clyde and LaNelle Jeffrey, March 21, 1956, in Louisville, KY. He graduated from JR Tucker High School, Henrico County, in 1974 and continued his education with courses at University of Richmond.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Lori Nygard Jeffrey (having been together a total of 46 years), and one sister, Sandra Jeffrey Jordan.
In 2018, CT retired from Bank of America after 38 years of employment in Dealer Financial Services.

Kenneth Paris - Unknown - October 13, 2023

Obituary Preview: Kenneth G. Paris, 92, Lieutenant Colonel, US Army (Retired), died peacefully at home in Tappahannock, Virginia on Friday, October 13, 2023. He was born on July 5, 1931 to Alice (Gilseth) and Fred Paris of Mohall, North Dakota whose families had homesteaded the prairie there in the early 1900s.
Ken graduated from Mohall High School in a class of ten students in June 1949. He then attended the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks. Later enlisted in the US army in 1951 during the Korean War. He later finished his undergraduate course at the University Of Maryland in 1956 with a degree of Bachelor of Military Science.
After two years as an enlisted soldier with the US Army Security Agency, Ken was commissioned through OCS (Officer’s Candidate School) as a 2nd Lieutenant of Infantry, but assigned back to his original unit at HQ USASA at Arlington Hall Station. While stationed there, he met Joan Kaiser, a secretary with the Central Intelligence Agency. They were married at Fort Myer Chapel in Arlington, VA on July 17, 1954 and they were blessed with a son, Andrew Joseph Paris, born Dec 21, 1957 in Germany.
Ken attended the Army General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 1967. Ken’s military career took the family to two tours of three years each in West Germany and a one year tour in Thailand and one year in Vietnam where he served as an advisor in the five most northern provinces with the I Corps and Military Region 1.
During his career, Ken earned nine meritorious awards, eight of which were American medals and one from the Easter Offensive in Vietnam in 1972, when he was recognized by the joint General Staff of the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces and authorized by the US Army to accept and wear the RVNAF “Gallantry Cross with Bronze Star” and the RVNAF “Armed Forces Honor Medal First Class” which was presented to him by President Thieu of South Vietnam.
Ken finished the last two years of his 24 year career in August of 1974 as a Lieutenant Colonel and Deputy Director of Personnel at the Headquarters of the Army Security Agency. He began a new career as a real estate agent and broker while allowing his son to finish high school in West Springfield, Va. and to search for a permanent retirement location. Ken found the perfect location for us in Essex County on Muddy Gut Road in 1976 with his parents, Joan’s mother and their son. In 1996, they settled in the Town of Tappahannock.
He is survived by his wife Joan C. (Kaiser) Paris, his son, Andrew J. Paris, his daughter in law Kimberly G. (Crigier) Paris, all of Orange County, Va two nieces, Allyn Vogel of Raleigh, NC; Paris Vogel Watkins and husband Daniel and a grandniece, Alice Watkins (Mrs Erik) Hennigar , of Delaware. He was predeceased by his parents, his infant son Stephen Kenneth, and two infant daughters, Louise Gail and Kathleen Ida : his sister Jacqueline G. Paris of Tappahannock, VA, : a grandson Kenneth D. Paris: a brother-in-law, Robert J. Kaiser
It is his request that there be no local memorial service. His cremains will be interred in the family lot in a private ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.

Robert Harris Hudgins Jr. - August 30, 1938 - October 12, 2023

Obituary Preview: Robert Harris Hudgins, Jr., 85, of Tappahannock, passed away on October 12, 2023. He was a strong Washington Redskins and Jeff Gordon fan. He also enjoyed his time as a karate instructor, fishing, piloting airplanes, riding his trike, and all things motorcycles. Robert was a passionate supporter of Tunnels to Towers.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Laverne Hudgins; parents, Maisey and Robert H. Hudgins Sr.; sisters, Ruth Temple Baylock (Robert) and Judith Ainsley.
Robert is survived by his children, Robert H. Hudgins III (Edie), Donna Powell (Gary), Melody Hemby (Tom); sisters, Rose Ellen Harper (Charles), Wanda Lee Laing (Neil); brother-in-law, Davis Ainsley; nine grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at Ephesus Baptist Church, Dunnsville, VA.

Obituary Preview: Descendant of a noble Polish family, Lilyanna was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1933. Just before the second World War, her family moved to Sofia, Bulgaria, where she spent most of her life as an exemplary business partner, passionate wife, devoted mother, and caregiving daughter to her own parents.
Born and raised with the values of strong Roman Catholic tradition, Liliyanna was one of the most beloved leading figures into the congregation of the St. Joseph’s Concathedral in Sofia, and with her generosity, wisdom, and open mind, she touched the hearts of many far beyond the catholic community. She was “wearing many hats” as a civil Franciscan nun from the Third Order. On our invitation, Mother Liliyanna arrived in Virginia to be with my wife Konstantina through her final battle with cancer. Since her daughter’s passing, Liliyanna’s health worsened progressively till our beloved Mother passed away on October 12th, at the Health and Rehab facility in Fredericksburg, VA. Always gentle and sweet, she left her mark in the hearts of those who ever met her, and I’m sure Liliyanna will be dearly missed and never forgotten! Ignat Konstantinov (Liliyanna’s son-in-law)

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Phyllis; a son, Kevin (Stephanie); two daughters, Karen Thomas (Jim) and Kristi Cunningham (Eric); two grandsons, Justin and Jason; two brothers, Thomas (Vera) and Deane (Arlene) and one sister, Joyce Davis (Calvin).
John was a United States Army Veteran who served his country in the Korean War. He retired after 33 years from Southern States Cooperative where he supported farmers as the Manager of the Tappahannock store.
He and Phyllis built their home in Howertons where they have resided since December of 1959 and are members of Howertons Baptist Church. They raised their family and grew in the community while he pursued his loves of woodworking, fishing, and gardening. He worked hard and family was the center of everything he did.
The family will receive friends on October 12, 2023 from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at Howertons Baptist Church. Services will follow at 11:00 A.M. with interment in the church cemetery. Obituary Preview: Birkett, Gordon McKay, died at his home on Friday, September 8, 2023. He lived a full and adventurous life for 92 years. Being a Navy brat, he and his parents, Jack and Ruby Louise Babb Birkett, lived in many states, Panama and Hawaii. After completion of high school in Pensacola, Fl., he joined the Air Force flying combat missions as a gunner on a B26 Bomber in Korea. After serving four years, he joined the civil work force with many varied and interesting jobs. The last and dearest to his heart was owner operator of Garrett’s Marina on the Rappahannock River.
He loved speed and raced Class B Hydroplanes, go-karts, and had a few starts racing cars in the Grand National circuit (NASCAR). He learned to fly and never tired of short jaunts with friends.
He served his community being a member and president of many civic groups and marine trade associations. He was appointed for 2 terms to the Virginia Marine Resource Commission, serving over 9 years, the Potomac Rivers Fisheries for 8 years, and Essex County Airport Authority for over 30 years.
He is survived by his wife, Valerie, the son of his heart, Brandon Prince (Suzanne) and a special niece, Sylvia Dodge (Kelly) and many cousins in Southampton County.

He was a gifted artist, photographer, amateur paleontologist, computer wiz, singer and lover of knowledge. What set Josh apart was his pure heart and unpretentious nature in helping and inspiring others to learn. Our deepest gratitude goes to the gifted oncology doctors and nurses, and especially hospices nurses Terri and Denise.
The family invites friends to visit Wednesday evening, July 26, 2023, from 5-7:00 p.m. at Faulkner Funeral Homes, Marks-Bristow Chapel. He was also a farmer during part of his time at Arlington Truck Rental and for years after he retired. Farming was his true passion. He loved his farm, his granddaughters and his animals. He always gave a helping hand to anyone who needed it.

Carroll is survived by his wife, Betty Lee Miller; son, Carroll E. Miller, III (Belinda); daughter, Kathy M. Whitaker (Dwaine); son in law, Ray Barber; nine grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.
A private interment of ashes was held at Riverview Cemetery, Richmond, VA.

Obituary Preview: John Wilson Colby, Jr., 77 of Tappahannock, Virginia, passed into the arms of Jesus on May 30th, 2023 at Dockside Health and Rehab Center after a long illness. John was born in Ithaca, New York on May 27, 1946; son of John Wilson Colby, Sr., and Geraldine (Choate) Colby.
John received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of the South, his Master’s in Social Science from the University of Mississippi, and his Master’s of Business Administration from Jackson University. He also took several courses towards his PhD. John worked as a teacher and coach in Duval county in Jacksonville, Florida; Administrator and Headmaster at Southampton Academy in Courtland, Virginia. He was a coach, teacher, and administrator at Christ Church School in Middlesex County, Virginia. He was also the headmaster at Aylett Country Day School in Millers Tavern, Virginia; Headmaster at James F. Byrnes Academy in Quinby, South Carolina; and also served as Headmaster at Patrick Henry Academy in Estill, South Carolina.
John is survived by his wife of 28 years, Ann Hinman Colby of Tappahannock, Virginia; his beloved step-grandchildren, LeighAnn Matthews and Bryce Matthews. He was also predeceased by his step-daughter, Amanda Marie Matthews of Tappahannock, Virginia. John has three children, John Wilson Colby III (Cheri), Julie Heather Carson Richey (Steve), and Deirdre Garrison James. John has a sister, Deirdre Sato, and one brother, George Colby (Cathy). John had ten grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many close family and friends all of whom he loved dearly.
John was a member of Tappahannock Presbyterian Church, a “pillar of the church,” and enjoyed attending and participating in any event. He loved the members of the church as his second family. John loved music and enjoyed the beautiful sounds of the organ and piano as Kathy Hughes, Director of Music made. He also enjoyed the choir, small in size, but mighty in song.
He enjoyed reading, music, gardening, spending time at the beach, coaching wrestling, wrestling, and enjoying taking care of his beloved shih-tzu, Simba.
John was a God-fearing man and put God first in his life. He gave himself to God a long time ago. He, his wife, and grandchildren try hard to live that way. John was kind to all, loving, caring, and always wanting to make life better. Special thanks to Jamie Cook, Director of Nursing, and her nursing staff at Dockside New Wing, who made John’s last days loving, kind, attentive and caring.
A memorial service for John will be held on Saturday, June 17th, 2023 at Tappahannock Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m.

Judy Rice Mitchell, age 78, passed away peacefully at her home with family on Wednesday, May 17, 2023. Born at the Columbia Women’s Hospital on July 8, 1944, in Washington, DC, Judy was the beloved daughter of Robert and Mary Rice. Together with her older sisters, Janet and Lourah Anne, she was raised in Arlington, Virginia. Judy pursued her education at Yorktown High School before attending Elon College in North Carolina. Returning to Washington, DC, she started working for the National Science Foundation (NSF), where she met her husband, Donald Raymond Mitchell. Donald, a former Marine and Vietnam Veteran, and Judy were married for 46 years. Together, they lovingly raised three children in Dunn Loring, Virginia.
Judy was a dedicated homemaker, devoting herself to the upbringing of her children and creating a warm and welcoming home for all who entered. She actively participated in her community, volunteering at the neighborhood pool and contributing to her children's classrooms and PTAs. Judy's family brought her immeasurable joy, and she delighted in being a grandmother. She proudly proclaimed that each of her four grandchildren, Lauren and Lillian Runz, Charles and Brooks Moxley, were perfect and bore a striking resemblance to her.
Following retirement, Judy and Donald relocated to Hayes, where they relished their time with their cherished dogs, Molly and Jack, and embraced the natural beauty of their "Rivah" view and pool on Creekside Lane. Judy discovered a passion for bowling, finding camaraderie and friendship both through her bowling league and political volunteer work. Judy was preceded in death by her loving husband, Donald, as well as her parents, Robert Russell Rice and Mary Chapman Rice. She is deeply missed and survived by her dear sisters, Janet and Lourah Anne, as well as her Ware cousins. Judy is lovingly remembered by her daughters and their spouses, Lara and Curran Runz, Mary and Kyle Moxley, and her son, Britt Raymond Mitchell. Judy's spirit lives on through her cherished grandchildren, her family, and all those whose lives she touched with her kindness, warmth, and genuine love. She will forever be remembered as a devoted wife, a nurturing mother, a doting grandmother, and a dear friend with an unforgettable smile.

Polly was retired from a long and successful nursing career. After retirement, Polly, an avid bingo player continued to serve her community by volunteering at local food banks, working blood drives, and volunteering to pack backpack lunches for local children. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, and sending cards and meals to those in need in the community.
Polly is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Jerry Lee Frye; children, Rusty Carlton (Kay) and Kathy Carlton Ogg (Cliff). Polly is also survived by the true loves of her life, her grandchildren, Russ Carlton, Maria Ogg Burton (Chase) and Millie Carlton.
A celebration of her life will be held Thursday, May 11, at 1:00 p.m. at Ephesus Baptist Church, Dunnsville Virginia. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
