Leona B. Nealon - July 26, 1925 - April 23, 2024

Departed: 04/23/2024 (Springfield)
Obituary Preview: Our mother, Leona Belle Nealon, was born on July 26th, 1925, to Rutherford Birchard “Hayes” Pierce and Julia Grace Dykstra Pierce, the third of their five children. The first few years of her life were spent in the town of Milton, now part of Milton-Freewater, in the northeastern part of Oregon. While still young, the family moved to southern Oregon and settled in Grants Pass, where Mom was raised and went to school, and graduated in the class of 1943. Times were hard during the Depression and the years following for the Pierce family. As a teenager, Leona took an office job at Terrell’s Wholesale Lumber Company in Grants Pass and worked there till shortly after she was married. She was able to buy a house in town and she and her younger sister Hazel moved into it, cleaned it and painted it, and eventually her parents and others of her family moved in as well. They often referred to it as the “Big K Street House!” Leona’s spiritual life was her priority from an early age through all her days. Here is some of what she wrote or told us, in her own words, about her early beginnings in learning about God. “I’m glad that as far back as I can remember I knew there was something “different” than the churches. Even when I went to Sunday school with some of my little friends, I knew that someday when I was older I’d get to know more about what my Mommy believed in. Some of my earliest recollections are of the hymn books and of Mommy singing “Only Remembered” and “When the King Comes In.” Then in 1937, Cora Horton and Mildred Fisher held a Gospel mission in Grants Pass. During that mission, my brother George, and others, made their profession to serve the Lord. I was a very shy 12-year-old, but finally, in the last meeting of the mission, on the last hymn, on the last verse, I stood to my feet as requested to express my choice as well. It certainly was a choice I’ve never regretted.” On Sunday mornings, Grandma “Gig” usually wasn’t able to go to the meeting, as she cared for old people at home in order to provide for the family. But others would pick up 12-year-old Leona and take her with them. She said, “At those first little meetings it all seemed so new, and I know there was very little progress for so many years, but at least there was a restraint even through school, and a conscience.” Each fall, Leona attended the annual church convention at Saginaw, Oregon. It was there, in the fall of 1937, that she and her brother George were baptized, in a little mill pond. And it was there in 1944 that she met Harold Nealon! They fell in love, and on November 22, 1945, they were married. It was not only a marriage, but a love, that lasted for over 75 years. Surely Leona and Harold were one of the most deeply devoted and happily matched couples ever!
Harold was still serving in the Merchant Marines, but had a 4 or 5 week leave at the time of their marriage. The wedding itself was in the family home in Grants Pass, on Thanksgiving Day. The honeymoon was along the southern Oregon coast.
When Harold finished his military service, he and Leona moved to the Eugene/ Springfield area, in the fall of 1946. They lived in several places and Harold worked several jobs during those first years. They purchased two acres at Pleasant Hill and they and Grandpa Nealon began building a house there. By January 1949 they were able to move into it. And that became our beloved family home for over 64 years.
For the rest of her days, Leona dedicated her life to being a faithful wife to her husband, a devoted mother to her 4 children, and a happy homemaker to all. She kept always busy cooking, washing, ironing, sewing, canning, shopping, and managing the household finances. She was famous for baking her incredible pies, cookies, and rolls. In the summertime, she was busy canning beans, peaches, pears, cherries, and tomatoes, and making pickles and raspberry jam. On Thanksgiving and Christmas, she spent all her holiday in the kitchen, happily preparing the feast for her family, often extended family and friends as well. She was an immaculate housekeeper, and never went to bed at night until every dish in the kitchen was washed clean and put away into its place! Although Mom and Dad loved to visit the Oregon coast, usually the Lincoln City area, Mom really didn’t enjoy traveling much and simply preferred spending time in the comfort of her home.
Leona and Harold counted it a great privilege that the living room of their home was host to a Sunday morning meeting for over 30 years. Their guest room was used often by visiting family members and the church ministers in the area. Their dining room was the setting for many meals and good times with family friends and relatives. Lee and Harold also provided space on their property for Leona’s mother and Harold’s parents as they got older and needed more care.
In 2014, though, the time came to make a change, so Lee and Harold sold the home and moved to a unit at Garden Way Retirement Community in Eugene. Though it was so different, they still enjoyed some good years there, till spring of 2021, when they moved to Bayberry Commons Assisted Living in Springfield. Harold passed away there in May 2021. Leona passed away there as well, last Tuesday, April 23rd, 2024, at the age of 98. We’d like to express our sincere thanks to the caregivers at Bayberry and the staff of Brighton Hospice for their tender care for Mom and Dad during their final days.
Besides her husband, Leona was preceded in death by her parents and all her siblings: Grace Graham, George, Hazel and Joyce Pierce. She is survived by her daughter Carol (Ron) Stobbe of Pleasant Hill, her 3 sons, Dave Nealon of Portland, Ken (JoAnn) Nealon of Newberg, and Mark (Paul) Nealon of Long Beach, CA.; by two sisters-in-law, Hazel Nealon of Coburg and Fran Pierce of Hillsboro; by her 6 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; by 5 nephews and 3 nieces; and by many more of her extended family and dear friends.

Donald "Don" Fred Papenfus - October 31, 1932 - January 25, 2024

Departed: 01/25/2024 (Springfield)
Obituary Preview: Donald Fred Papenfus, age 91, passed away peacefully on January 25th, 2024. Don was born October 31st, 1932, in Eugene, Oregon to Fred and Linda Papenfus.
Don grew up as the youngest child on his family’s homestead in Pleasant Hill, with his older sister, Ellamae and older brother, Delbert. Being a young man on a farm, Don helped his father with the regular ranch duties and found his love for the land. Don took great pride in the family homestead and made sure that when his father was eventually too ill to take care of the ranch himself, he would be ready and willing to take over the responsibility. In the meantime, he worked as a lumber carrier at Hills Creek Lumber Mill in Jasper, Oregon.
At age 20, Don married Martha Chase of Goshen on January 9th, 1953. Together, they traveled to Alaska for Don’s time in the service and lived there for 2 years. Don and Martha returned to their hometown of Pleasant Hill and had 3 children: Deloris, Donna and Daren. There, Don continued his work at the lumber mill. One of Don’s favorite activities was to pile his children in his car and go on a long drive to his favorite campsites. Together they would make campfires and look at the stars; being in nature was one of Don’s favorite escapes.
In 1971, Don began his career as a log truck driver and continued this passion until his retirement in 1994. After retirement, Don enjoyed the rest of his days doing the things he loved most: ranching, socializing at the local VFW, dancing with pretty ladies, and drinking finely balanced drinks. Don lived a full life, one many would wish to have experienced, and he did it with an awnry grin and quick-witted jokes. Don’s large personality and presence will be sorely missed. Don’s legacy continues through his two living children Deloris and Daren, his 5 grandchildren and his three great-grandchildren.
Please join us to celebrate the life of Donald Fred Papenfus on February 10th, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Major Family Funeral Home in Springfield, Oregon.

Hilda Nadia Whipple - January 09, 1940 - January 23, 2024

Departed: 01/23/2024 (Springfield)
Obituary Preview: Hilda Nadia Hadawi Whipple, age 84, passed away on January 23, 2024, in Eugene, Oregon, surrounded by loved ones. Hilda was born in Jerusalem, Palestine on January 9, 1940, to the late Edward Hadawi and Carmel Bedrossian Hadawi. Just over one year later, her brother Albert L Hadawi, was born. The family moved to the Old City, Jerusalem after what is known as the Palestinian Tragedy of 1948 (Nakba). In first grade, Hilda attended an all-French school, where only the French language was spoken. This was the beginning of her love for the language. Hilda continued her education in Jerusalem until the family moved to Toronto, Ontario Canada in 1957.
Fluent in three languages, Arabic, English, and French, Hilda pursued degrees in French and Education. Hilda attended Hope College in Holland, Michigan where she graduated in 1963 with her Bachelor of Arts in French. She received her teaching certificate from Kansas State College in 1964. After moving to Eugene, Oregon, she endeavored to continue her education at the University of Oregon where she earned her Master of Education in 1973.
Meanwhile, Hilda began teaching at Spencer Butte Middle School in Eugene and did so for several years. After a short tenure at Sheldon High School, she took a position as Foreign Language teacher at Churchill High School. There, she taught with excellence and enthusiasm for the remainder of her career. Beloved by students, many of whom she took on trips to France, Hilda instilled a greater appreciation for the French language, culture, and country. She attributed her fascination with French to three things: the beauty of the language, the richness of the culture, and the many doors that the language opened for her, allowing her to experience a variety of cultures.
Hilda belonged to several professional societies including the Oregon Foreign Language Council, Committee on Basic Standards of Achievement, the Oregon Foreign Language Teachers and the State Department of Education, the Eugene Education Association Representative Council, the Board of the Oregon Chapter of American Association of Teachers of French, and Chairperson of the 1978 National French Contest of the State of Oregon.
She was not only an educator by profession and at heart, but Hilda was a life-long learner. Highly intellectual, she read extensively, including books and newspapers from around the world. She also treasured taking time to learn about people as she enjoyed a wide group of friends, including former students, in whom she invested her time and care. As a Christian, Hilda was a faithful member and supporter of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church of Eugene. She also supported the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice, which is an organization that meant a lot to her, as a proud, Palestinian Christian. Hilda had a fond appreciation for the Arts and was a patron of the Eugene Symphony for many years. She was enthusiastic about University of Oregon football and could be found passionately cheering on the Ducks in the stands with friends at Autzen Stadium and later, from her living room.
Hilda had high standards for her students as well as herself. As an accomplished, well-spoken woman, she pursued excellence, was meticulous with details, and held in high esteem those who showed genuine consideration for others. Like many dedicated teachers, she knew how to encourage with praise and adulation from the heart. Those who knew her well, remember her regal nature, her exceeding kindness, as well as her sly sense of humor and spice.
Hilda loved spending time at the Oregon Coast over the years in addition to much-anticipated summer drives up the mountains, through McKenzie Pass. She enjoyed frequenting her favorite local eateries with friends including Marché at 5th Street and SweetWaters on the River, at Valley River Inn.
Though Hilda was a private person in many ways, she was an important part of her community and her loss will be deeply felt. She is survived by many friends and family whose lives she blessed by her generosity, consideration, grace and love.
Per Hilda's request, no services will be held.
