Mittie Ward Hamilton - September 06, 1930 - August 18, 2023

Departed: 08/18/2023 (Creswell)
Obituary Preview: On Friday, August 18, 2023, Mittie Ward Hamilton, "Miss Mittie", a beloved mother, grandmother, friend, and neighbor, passed away at her home in Bulls Bay.  She was 92.  Born September 6,1930 to Henry Ellis Ward and Mittie Armstrong Ward in Columbia, NC, Mittie was the youngest of four children.
Upon graduation from Columbia High School, she met her future husband, Albin Hamilton.  They quickly hit it off with a shared talent for singing and married in 1949.  Mittie had a beautiful alto voice and could play the piano by ear.  She joked that her mother stopped paying for piano lessons when she realized she wasn't reading the music.  Mittie and Albin went on to have two children, Angela and Albin (Al), Jr.  Mittie was a hard-working mother holding positions at the draft board during the Korean War and later working as a secretary for the Soil Conservation Service in Williamston for twenty years.  Following the loss of her husband in 1987, she returned to Columbia.  When the Eastern 4H Center opened within walking distance of her home, Mittie was excited for the opportunity to serve as the receptionist and worked there from 2001-2017 retiring in her late 80's.
As one of the first faces to greet visitors at the Eastern 4H Center, "Miss Mittie" was known for her friendly smile and quiet Southern charm.  Her gentle nature, loving heart, and caring spirit were well-known across Bulls Bay.  She was an exceptional cook, which was one of her favorite ways to show love to those around her.  During the fundraisers for the 4H Center, Miss Mittie's homemade fudge was a runaway hit, with people eager to place a bid.
Mittie also loved sports, especially basketball, football and golf.  She enjoyed playing Solitaire on her computer every afternoon and was a member of a bridge club in Columbia until her physical health declined.  She had a sharp mind throughout her life, and she gave a listening ear and sound advice to those around her.  Mittie lived her life as a testament to the value she placed on friendships and relationships.  She was full of gratitude to be surrounded by friends and neighbors who loved and supported her.
Mittie's son, Albin Hamilton, Jr. and Mittie's brothers, Edison, Gus, and Winton predeceased her.  She is survived by her daughter, Angela and her husband Matt, who live in Wake Forest, NC.  They have two children, Courtland, who lives in Denver, CO, and Kate and her husband David, who reside in Cambridge, MA, along with many nieces and nephews.  She always spoke lovingly and proudly about her family.

She was born on March 9, 1941, on Rider's Creek in Tyrrell County.  She was the daughter of the late Robert Lee Spencer and Addie Reynolds Spencer, and was preceded in death by her beloved husband Walter Wesley (Tom) Tucker, Jr. and her sister Marie S. Sawyer.
Ann served as Register of Deeds in Tyrrell County for many years.  She loved her work, loved the people she worked with, and she loved her life.  She was an avid sailer, and she and Tom spent much time out on the Scuppernong River and the Albemarle Sound.  She loved traveling, loved Christmas, loved her grandchildren, loved to read, and in her late years, read novel after novel, and did hundreds of jigsaw puzzles.
Ann learned to play the piano when she was a young girl, and served as pianist and choir director at Malachi Chapel FWB Church for over forty years.  In her later years, she moved her membership to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, and she occasionally substituted as pianist there, if the need arose.
For a time, she accompanied a southern gospel quartet from Albemarle Church of Christ.  She played piano, sang alto, and loved every good old gospel song they sang.
She loved music, especially the works of Mozart, and she played at home for her own pleasure, even when illness took her mobility and she no longer accompanied the choir at church.
She loved to fish, loved homemade chocolate cake, she loved fried chicken, Tami's homemade bread, and sweet tea with extra lemon.  She collected frogs and anything her grandchildren made for her.
Most of all, she loved her family.
She is survived by two daughters, Vickie Woolard and husband Barry, Toni Brickhouse, and grandchildren, Kate Mayfour and husband Chad, Ellie Woolard, Alyssa Armstrong and husband Josh, Taylor Brickhouse, and great-grandchildren Jennifer, Axel, and Daisy Mae.  In addition, she leaves behind her best friend Margaret Boucher, her special friend Nick Carpenter, and her favorite cat Shadow.
Visitation will be held in the fellowship hall of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 19, 2023.  Ann's service of death and resurrection will follow in the sanctuary at 2:00 p.m., then committal at Azalea Memorial Gardens, where she will be laid to rest beside Tom.
Services will be conducted by the Reverends Karen Pruette and Ben Van Staalduinen.

It's usually published in a newspaper, online, or in a funeral home's website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They can help facilitate condolences, share memories, and provide closure for loved ones.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer should have a good understanding of the person's life, personality, and accomplishments.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include funeral service details and charitable donation information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. You may need to provide the written obituary text, along with payment information and photo files if applicable.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, corrections or edits can be made to an online obituary. However, changes to print publications may be more difficult or expensive to implement.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publication varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online platforms may publish immediately, while print publications may take several days or weeks.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes, incorporating meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to the obituary. Just be sure to obtain necessary permissions or credits if required.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce the death, you can opt for a private or family-only obituary. This might be shared through email or social media instead of public platforms.

Can I include charitable donation information in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include details about charitable organizations or causes that were important to their loved one. This can help continue their legacy and inspire others to give back.

How do I find old obituaries?

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

Contact the publication or online platform directly to report any mistakes. They will work with you to correct the error as soon as possible.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! A well-placed anecdote or witty remark can help capture the personality of the deceased and bring smiles to readers' faces.
