Obituary Preview: Marian Eda Katherine (Hoelz) Baderschneider was born on May 9, 1938, to William F. Hoelz and Edna M. Mielke in Waseca, Minnesota. Marian became a child of God through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism on June 12, 1938, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, New Richland, Minnesota, by Rev. William F. Lehmann. Marian continued her growth in faith and was Confirmed in her faith in Jesus Christ by Rev. Lehmann in the right of Confirmation on May 18, 1952.
Marian grew up on the family farm surrounded by nature where she grew to love the outdoors and enjoy God's wonderful and beautiful creation. She attended primary and secondary school at a one room schoolhouse where she developed a love for learning and enjoyed assisting her teacher with the younger students. Marian graduated from New Richland High School in 1956. That fall she moved to Waverly, Iowa to attend Wartburg College. While there she met the love of her life, Victor. Marian thoroughly enjoyed her college years, especially the lifelong friendships which developed. Marian continued her education at Allen Memorial Hospital Lutheran School of Nursing, in Waterloo, Iowa. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Wartburg College, and her Nursing Degree from Allen Memorial Hospital Lutheran School of Nursing in 1961. Over the years she enjoyed working in many different medical settings providing care to all ages.
Marian was joined in marriage to Victor on September 3, 1961, in New Richland at St. Peter's Lutheran Church by Rev. Lehmann. They moved to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin where Victor began his internship into the ministry. Marian supported and served with Victor in Petersburg, Minnesota, Grafton, Iowa, West Union, Iowa, and Mahomet, Illinois.
Marian and Victor were blessed with sixty and a half years of marriage, celebrating their sixtieth anniversary in September of 2021 with family and friends. Their marriage was blessed with many wonderful experiences as they shared the love of Jesus with so many others along life's road.
Marian loved others unconditionally. No one was a stranger to her for long.  Family was important to her, treasuring the time she was able to spend with her children and their friends, her grandchildren, and the family at large in California, Maryland, Minnesota, Michigan and Delaware. Marian was an “outdoor girl”, always enjoying being out in the yard among the flowers and beauty of nature. Her home was important to her and enjoyed the time she was able to spend there with family and friends. She enjoyed the opportunities she had to travel in the U.S. and abroad. She loved taking pictures and looking through memory albums. Marian's ability to be in the moment was uncanny. She was able to see the extraordinary in the ordinary. Marian taught all of us to enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
Marian died peacefully at home surrounded by her husband and daughter on Thursday, April 14, at the age of 83. She loved Jesus and served Him. She was blessed with a rich full life for which we give thanks to God. Marian now rests in the arms of Jesus her Savior through whom she has life and salvation. Surviving her are her husband, Rev. Bill went on to receive his Master of Business Administration at Wayne State University in Detroit. After college Bill used his booming voice to broadcast play by play for Western Michigan hockey and football for several years.
From 1980 to 2004 Bill served as Vice President for Planned Giving and Trust Relations at the University of Illinois Foundation. During his time there he built what is considered by many to be one of the nation’s preeminent gift planning programs. Nationally recognized, Bill was a specialist in major and deferred gifts and planning solicitation strategies. He earned the Certified Financial Planner designation in 1984 and regularly assisted a variety of charitable organizations. In 1995 Bill was honored as Planned Giving Professional of the Year by Planned Giving Today. In January 2014, he was named the first recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the East Central Illinois AFP Chapter. Drawing upon his expertise, Bill authored the book The Artful Journey: Cultivating and Soliciting the Major Gift, published in 1997, which is considered a must read for those in the industry, as well as being co-author of the Moves Management Manual which was published in 2012. Charitable with his time, Bill was a member of several family foundations, which he helped establish. He was also the co-founder of the Institute of Charitable Giving, which trained fundraisers from varying charitable organizations in both the United States and Canada. The guiding tenant for Bill in his career as a fundraiser was that dedication to the best interest of his donors was the only way to achieve the objectives of the charitable organizations he served.
Bill was, most importantly, a beloved and devoted father, grandfather and husband. His family will remember his gentle nature, kind heart, and curiosity. Though having a strong work ethic, Bill also knew the importance of days well spent traveling with Terri, meeting and learning about others, and spending days with family cheering on his favorite teams. He embraced each and every day and recognized the gift of life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online, or in a funeral home's website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They can also help families process their grief and provide closure.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing it. The writer should be someone who knew the deceased well and can provide accurate and meaningful information.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. You may also include a brief biography or anecdote to personalize the obituary.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be suitable for online publications or memorial websites.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the notice and make it more engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and requirements. Some newspapers may have online forms or email addresses for submitting obituaries.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, you can write your own obituary in advance. This is often referred to as a "self-written" or "pre-written" obituary. It can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told accurately.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life.

If you prefer not to share the obituary publicly, you can choose to keep it private by sharing it only with close family and friends or through a private online memorial page.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers or other gestures. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased's legacy.
