She is survived by her eight children, Mary Chang (and husband George Yankwitt), Peter Chang, Eileen Machler (and husband Brian), Kevin Chang (and wife Michelle), Carolyn Chang (and husband Peter Martin), Leslie Metzler (and husband Thomas), Emily P. Chang, and Terence Chang; her three sisters, Joan O’Hare, Mary Jane O’Hare and Doris Primich; brother, Dennis O’Hare; fifteen cherished grandchildren, Erica Kessler (and husband Thomas), Kaitlyn Bott (and husband Jeffrey), Peter Chang, Jacqueline Berk (and husband Matthew), Elodie Peay (and husband Connor), Ryan Chang, Colin Chang, Luke Machler, Madeline Bauer (and husband Jacob), Jonathan Chang, Matthew Metzler, Emma Carreno, Simon Chang Martin, Quinn Chang Martin and Maya Metzler; one great-granddaughter, Raegan Kessler; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
One of six children, Maggie was born on July 13, 1939 in Highland Park into a large, loving Irish Catholic family. After high school, Maggie went on to earn her degree in nursing. While a nursing student at St. Peter’s Hospital in New Brunswick, she met a young resident, Dr. Peter Chang. The two were married and lived in Delaware, Pennsylvania and West Virginia before settling in Edison. Maggie was a wonderful mother to her nine children, loving them unconditionally and supporting them in all that they did. She was particularly thrilled to become a grandmother and took great pride and joy in the achievements of her fifteen grandchildren.
Maggie had a beautiful voice and gave the gift of music to her children throughout their lives. She was a talented seamstress and enjoyed making clothes, including First Holy Communion dresses and prom gowns for her daughters. An expert knitter, she made sweaters and scarves for family and friends, and later learned how to weave on a loom. Maggie loved to cook and bake for her family, and mastered her skills by attending many cooking classes over the years. Her culinary gifts will be truly missed at birthdays and holidays alike.
Maggie was warm and loving and had a wonderfully unique sense of humor. She was a loyal friend to many in all walks of her life over the years.
Two things were most important in Maggie’s life: her devotion to family and to God. Her tremendous Catholic faith gave her unwavering strength her entire life and she attended mass regularly. One of Maggie’s greatest achievements and a source of great pride was when she completed her journey to become an oblate at St. Mary’s Abbey in Morristown.
We will miss Maggie deeply but take solace in knowing that she is with the Lord. May she rest in peace.

Mitchell D. Rubin - January 11, 1943 - May 10, 2024

Departed: 05/10/2024 (Madison )
Obituary Preview: Mitchell Donald Rubin, raised in Queens and a longtime resident of New Jersey, passed away on May 10, 2024 at age 81.
Mitch graduated with his Bachelor’s degree from Queens College and obtained his JD and Tax LLM from NYU Law. He practiced law for decades in AT&T’s tax department, working particularly long hours during the company's divestment period in the early 80’s.
Mitch was an avid fan of the arts - most notably theater, music and modern art - and was deeply knowledgeable regarding a wide variety of subjects. Among other topics, he loved to expound on world history, religion and movies. He was deeply involved with his Jewish heritage and the LGBTQ+ community of New Jersey, and with family and friends through activities like his valued book club.
After several lengthy hospitalizations in recent years, Mitch would often share the unsolicited advice “don’t get old.” Well, he did, and we’re glad.
Mitch was predeceased by his parents, Ruth and Andre, and his brother, Herbert. He is survived by his brother Stuart, his two children, David Rubin and Jessie Van Arman (nee Rubin), children-in-law, Shannon and Darius, and his grandson Avery along with many close friends and community.

Dr. Herbert M. Potash - June 16, 1938 - May 07, 2024

Departed: 05/07/2024 (Madison )
Obituary Preview: Dr. Herbert M. Potash of Madison, NJ, passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2024. He is survived by his loving wife and life partner of 63 years, Janice, son, David Potash and daughter-in-law Jenny Gibbs, daughter, Stephanie Barry and partner Kevin Drexler; grandchildren, Sam, Max, and Nicky Barry, Lydia and Michael Potash, and his beloved Welsh terrier, Jasper.
Herb, affectionately known as Doc by his family, was, like elder sister Betty, born in the Bronx, NY to parents Esther (Gordon) Potash and Saul Potash. The son of Lithuanian immigrants, Herb worked alongside his parents at their dry goods store in the Bronx, attended Hebrew school, and graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School at the age of 16. He then attended University of Chicago for his BA in Psychology, continued with his MA at Kent State University, and completed his PhD in Psychology at Michigan State University, where he met his wife. He ultimately attained his Diplomate in Professional Psychotherapy.
Dr. Potash had an illustrious career as both a university professor and a private practitioner. He began his teaching career at the University of New Hampshire, and then devoted over 30 years of his professional life to heading the Master’s Program in Clinical Psychology at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, NJ. During this time, Herb wrote two textbooks for use by his students and fellow practitioners. He also worked at two state clinics. Doc impacted thousands of future practitioners through his innovative approach to teaching and his dedication to existentialism, the therapeutic practice founded in deep reflection on what it is to be human. He maintained a private clinical practice in his home for decades, helping hundreds of people both professionally and personally. After retiring from teaching, Dr. Potash wrote Becoming Plumb Healthy for his grandchildren, sound and loving words of wisdom summarizing his philosophy with myriad life lessons. Anyone who knows Herb can extract his true essence from this book.
A connoisseur of life, Herb was a passionate gourmand, serving as the appetizer chef at his and Jan’s numerous dinner parties. He was fond of Spanish food, ice cream and Jan’s delicious homemade cherry pie. As an art enthusiast, he appreciated many Impressionist and post-Impressionist painters, especially the works of the Ashcan School. Herb loved classical music, particularly violin, as well musical theater and dance. He enjoyed being close to Broadway and took in hundreds of shows, plays, and concerts with his friends and family.
Doc most loved spending time with his family and was dubbed the King of Scrabble, as he never lost! He traveled extensively with all of them, from numerous trips to Europe, winters in Hollywood Beach, FL, and summers in Newport, RI, and Saratoga, NY. Herb always welcomed a new adventure. A sports enthusiast, Doc was a die hard Giants fan—both football and baseball— and often recounted the games he attended at the Polo Grounds before the boys of summer left for the west coast. Herb and Jan took up tap dancing later in life to help keep active and once surprised the entire family with a rousing performance of “We’re a Couple of Swells.” More recently, Herb joined a competitive bridge group and diligently worked for master points.
Thoroughbred horse racing was Herb’s other great passion. In his retirement years, he became part owner of several thoroughbred horses. One of them, Afleet Again, won a Breeder’s Cup race in 2012, and his triumph was among Herb’s happiest experiences. Herb most relished time in his beautiful home of over 50 years, gardening in the backyard oasis he and Jan grew together over the years. In his own words: “I have been given the gift of love and have been able to give it back toothers. My life has been so full of meaning for me that I will never be fully obliterated by death. We conquer death by the affirmation of our own lives and by affirming the importance of thelives of loved ones who are no longer with us.”
In this spirit, Dr. Potash will be honored with a celebration of life in late summer. Contact CelebratingHerbertPotash@gmail.com for more information.

David E. Whiting - May 26, 1938 - May 01, 2024

Departed: 05/01/2024 (Madison )
Obituary Preview: David Edgar Whiting, Chatham Business Owner, longtime Florham Park resident
David Edgar Whiting, born in West Orange, New Jersey and a resident of Florham Park from 1970 to 2000 before retiring in Forked River, passed away from pancreatic cancer at age 85 on May 1.
He was the proud business owner of Dependable Parts in Chatham from the 1960’s-2000 and of 168 Main Street.
Dave discovered Chatham, New Jersey not from a map, a job, or a drive from the neighboring county, but from a guy he met on the Citizens Band Radio.
Dave, a 1956 graduate of Bloomfield Technical School trained in electronics, held one of only seven licenses in the state of New Jersey, a requirement to be on the radio band. A skilled technician always ahead of technology trends, he was keen for adventure.
In pursuit of the best radio signal, Dave would take to the Mountain peak in West Orange, where he could participate in what he called a “gossip circle” of guys on the radio. Here he met a fellow enthusiast who invited Dave to visit him at Dependable Parts, where he worked part-time in his hometown of Chatham.
After bouncing around various technical and appliance jobs in the Oranges, Dave described coming to Chatham as “finding God’s country where people paid their bills for your work,” unlike his early experiences in Orange. Eventually, Dave bought Dependable Parts from the owner who was keen to be in the budding technology business but needed someone with the right skills and acumen to help the company succeed. Dave thrived with the times, becoming a sought-after Zenith authorized dealer.
Over the years at Dependable Parts, Dave worked side by side with his beloved co-workers Chris Ahlers and Steve Fetherston. He also enjoyed working with a few local students who he hired as part-time employees and kept as lifelong friends.
Dave knew the Chatham towns along with neighboring Madison and Summit like the back of his hand. After nearly 30 years of installing countless TV antennas on roofs and servicing an impressive amount of TVs and electronics, he was familiar with most of the homes and families in the area. He loved his customers and enjoyed meeting and helping a great number of people in the community.
Dave loved Chatham and proudly supported the Best Little Luncheonette and the Chatham Sub Shop for his daily lunch walks. He was a member of the Chatham Chamber of Commerce and could be found most Tuesday evenings at Charlie’s Aunt. He also loved being a landlord of 168 Main Street where he and Peg Whiting were owners from 1975 to 2023.
In addition to all things electronic, Dave was also skilled and equally passionate about motors. He took great pleasure in his impressive car collection. For many years, he could be spotted driving in Chatham’s Fourth of July parade in his baby blue 1954 Kaiser Darren or 1959 T-bird convertible. He was also known to take a spin around town while restraining the V12 265 Hp engine that bolted from 0-80 in seconds in his 1963 Jaguar E-Type coupe roadster. His garage swelled with many motorcycles, including his favorite lawn mowing tractor and a go-kart he crafted from a lawnmower engine and plywood, for his children (and sometimes himself) to enjoy in the woods behind his house. Dave was not only an adventurer and Thrill seeker, In addition to working and spending time on his many projects, Dave was a very quiet organizer and protagonist of fun. He was the ringleader for a bi-annual father-son dirt biking weekend at the “coal pile” mountains in Scranton, PA. Trucks, vans, and trailers would leave his driveway on a Friday, returning at the end of the weekend covered in dirt, carrying smiling fathers and sons with stories to tell. Many memories and legends came from these weekends, and invitations were highly coveted. A family friend who joined for every trip shared this memory: I always remember feeling so comfortable wherever we were, as long as your Dad was there! There was never any concern about getting lost or having some kind of breakdown. As long as Uncle Dave was around things were always ok!
Always plotting the next adventure from his reclining chair, Dave also planned various canoe, rafting, and tubing excursions along the Delaware Water Gap along with annual winter ski trips with family and friends. He never missed an opportunity for a summer picnic, which always included his favorite group game, Pie face.
Dave also took his toys on the water. In the 60’s he bought a very old motorboat with a 35 Hp Evinrude engine from his friend and fellow technical enthusiast, Jay Fisher. This white and robin’s egg blue boat had many Jersey adventures before it went to Wisconsin to reside in a barn. It would come out to play during the annual family holiday week on Lake Ripley, Wisconsin. Dave would spend half the vacation repairing the boat and the other half doing endless loops around the lake so that everyone got a turn water skiing and tubing.
In 1993 his garage swelled once again when he added the Harley Davidson Electra Glide cruiser to his collection. This next chapter saw Dave organizing many local rides enjoyed with his son Brian. He also went on several cross-country adventures with friends and family to visit his other son, Brett, out west.
Dave passed along many of his best attributes, skills, and talents to his three children. Brian was gifted with David’s technical and mechanical acumen and passion for projects. Brett was graced with Dave’s “man of the people” spirit, open-heart, and generosity with creating connections and planning gatherings. And Gwen received Dave’s creative problem-solving skills and passion for creating and building a business.
Dave was a steadfast rock, dedicated to his children. From assisting Brian with his childhood recycling collection to driving him for midnight practice at the Ice Hockey Rink, Dave was blessed to have a son who was his best friend, sharing passions for projects together.
Dave and Brett enjoyed many father-son activities including years of cross-country adventures, sharing invaluable experiences and moments as they traveled the US. Dave was always happy to be the driver for Gwen and her friends throughout high school, college, New York City, and beyond. While he enjoyed getting everyone home safely and was always up for a drive, he also loved as a friend of Gwen wrote this week, “having a front row seat to the fun.”
In the 80’s, Dave spent endless hours behind the very first and giant!) Betamax Video Recorder, capturing hours of video footage of Gwen and her teammates competing in the Madison Rosettes YMCA Gymnastics meets.
While Dave loved to mentor and care for his children and extended brood, he was known to look the other way when he knew they were up to mischief, sometimes joining them in a crank or caper.
In his small suburban circles, Dave was always perfectly placed to be there for many young neighbors and locals who needed safe adult support. Dave’s unique, kind way made him special. He was very proud and privileged to be a role model, mentor, friend, and father figure for a few key people in his life, including Bill Howell and John Duetsch. Even a toddler neighbor would come to the backyard to see if Mr. Whiting could play, as he enjoyed Dave’s life-sized toys.
Dave and Peg shared 30 years together filled with family, friends and fun. Many wonderful years, Sunday luncheons, holidays and weekly visits with Dave’s mom Olive and brother Charles. Years of holidays, vacations, and special events with Peg’s parents Bob and Winnie, Peg’s sister Cindy and her husband Jud, and his nieces Betsy and Susan. In addition, they enjoyed spending time together with many life-long friends.
Dave spent his retired years dedicated to the Lacey County Ambulance Squad and enjoyed volunteering on many charity motorcycle events.
Dave served in the U.S. National Army Reserves as a cook and fondly recounted the camaraderie with the guys and especially his time talking to everyone and making mash potatoes in the mess hall. Dave truly embodied the spirit of living life to the fullest. He loved what he did and the people he did it with. A month ago, the hospice chaplain asked Dave if there was anything left on his bucket list or if there was anything he didn’t get to do, to which Dave responded peacefully, “no, I’m good.’
Dave is survived by Margaret Taber Whiting of Florham Park, son David Brian Whiting of Florham Park (mother Judy Whiting of Madison), son Brett Taber Whiting, daughter-in-law Elieen Whiting, and granddaughter Sage Marie Whiting, of Bloomington, MN, and daughter Gwen Laura Whiting and son-in-law James Jordan Dale of Bridgehampton and New York City, NY.
Charitable contributions may be made in Dave's memory to the Lacey Township EMS, P.O. Box 289, Forked River, NJ 08731.

Departed: 04/14/2024 (Madison )

Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Judith Campbell of Madison; two granddaughters, Christine Preston and her husband Michael; the Hon. Samantha Elliott and her husband Matthew; one grandson, Bryan Campbell and his wife Elena; five great-grandchildren whom she adored, Delia Preston, Fiona Elliott, Ben Preston, Sarah Kate Preston, and Henry Elliott; her daughter-in law, Shana Campbell, and family; and many dear friends at Juniper Village.

They enjoyed many adventures there with Phyllis’s sister and brother-in-law Bobo and Lou McNally, their children, and many other friends and relatives. Phyllis was an active parishioner of Sacred Heart Parish in Staten Island for many years and was also a member of the mother’s guild of Augustinian Academy.

Nancy T. Brower - January 31, 1929 - March 25, 2024

Departed: 03/25/2024 (Madison )
Obituary Preview: The wind has changed direction, and like her much loved Mary Poppins, Nancy Tasman “Taz” Brower has left us. She died peacefully on March 25, 2024 at age 95, with her family around her. Taz was born January 31,1929 in Lansing MI and grew up with her loving and devoted parents Eric and Helen Tasman in South Orange, NJ. Taz loved spending time with her wonderful father who called her “Pal.” He taught her to ride a bike, play tennis, and roller skate, and together they loved to watch baseball and football games. Such was their relationship that she took on her dad’s nickname–”Taz” which she used for the rest of her life. Calling her Nancy was a tip off that you were either a telemarketer or that you wanted to irk her. While her Mother proclaimed Taz’s sister “practically perfect in every way,” and that Taz “would never be a lady,” she forged a wonderful bond with her Dad over their mutual love of sports. After graduating from Miss Beard’s School in 1947 as the “Athenian” sports captain, she went to Vassar, barely graduating in 1951. “I think I loved playing bridge more than studying,” she often remarked. Double dates with various Princeton men paid off, and she finally settled on Bailey Brower Jr of Chatham, NJ. Though she never converted him to skiing, he fashioned her into an avid Princeton football fan. Together they never missed 70 years of Yale-Princeton games, where she was never shy about loudly offering her analyses of the coach’s play-calling. Yet she always included a supportive “Go Tigers!”
Taz’s “first child” was the Noe Pond Club which she and Bailey established in 1955. Taz loved nothing more than being at Noe, teaching swimming and lifesaving, and creating programs and memories for so many families over the years. She invented the “emblem system” with badges that showed the level of swimming each child had accomplished. Proudly wearing your Gold Fish gave you access to the “deep end” and let the lifeguards know where you belonged. Taz led the development of superb swimming, diving and tennis teams, first at Noe, and then at Copper Springs and Clover Hill. Her most unique creation was the annual “Watershow,” a musical she narrated complete with scenery on the dock and costumes able to be swum in without drowning! Some of her favorite people were the young men and women on the staff, many of whom will never forget Taz, Lake Wallenpaupack, water skiing, and raucous games of touch football.
Taz showered her love and support on her four daughters, six granddaughters, and one grandson. She loved decorating for the holidays, especially Christmas. Taz and Bailey’s nine-foot Christmas trees were legendary as were the evenings of caroling in the neighborhood followed by a hilarious “Yankee Swap.” Many a burned Christmas dinner resulted in the fire department showing up, much to the delight of her grandson. When a fireman exclaimed, “Oh no, Taz, not again!” She offered him cookies and the day was saved. One of Taz’s essential parental beliefs was that the family that played Wales Tales together stayed together, and many games were played around the Brower family room table. Sons-in-law were inaugurated into this tradition, and though she loved them dearly too, Taz would never ever take it easy on them.
In addition to running Noe Pond, Taz co-founded and starred in many shows as part of the Morristown Marionette Players for nearly 45 years, relishing her roles as heroes, witches, wizards, or really any part that involved a good costume. Throughout her life she volunteered at the Red Cross and Junior League, served as an officer of the National Recreation and Swimming Association as well as the Town And Country Association and NJ Junior Tennis Association, and held various leadership positions at Morristown-Beard School, serving as a Trustee, President of the Alumni Association and more. Taz was ahead of her time, empowering girls through her coaching and directing of school plays at the Peck School, and she was instrumental in bringing girls lacrosse to the Morris County area. She inspired her offspring to live lives full of sports and theater. Taz played a mean game of field hockey well into her 40s, and cheered on the athletic and artistic exploits of her daughters and granddaughters.
Taz loved sharing a good laugh, cruising in her red convertible, making up silly lyrics to well-known songs to celebrate a milestone, or beating anyone in a game of cards. Her spirit was indomitable, and she will be missed by the many who knew and loved her, including her wonderful caretakers Lucy and Karen. Taz was predeceased by her opinionated but much loved Bailey, and is survived by her daughters and their spouses– who will gladly toast to Taz with anyone: Kate Solisti and Marcus Kurek, Kris and Kurt Schulte, Kim and Chuck Barton, Karin Brower Corbett, as well as assorted granddaughters, grandsons-in-law, and one grandson.

Uninterested in the rigidity of formal education he joined the workforce straight out of high school. He started with Standard Chartered Bank, where he met his beloved wife, Alison. Despite his obvious attraction, he maintained a professional relationship at work even refusing to vote for Alison in a contest to elect the "best bum" in the office.
When their affection could no longer be contained, they married in 1983 and had two beautiful children, Alexandra who married Thomas Kirk and James who married Mackie Elwell.
His three grandchildren Oliver Kirk, Chloe Kirk and Jem Miley will remember him as their Poppa.
He climbed the ranks through Standard Chartered which eventually brought him the opportunity to move his family to the US. The family fell in love with America and when his contract was up, he sought new employment at Oracle to continue living the American dream.
Immediately, Oracle moved the family to the Netherlands, where they spent a year enjoying the poffertjes, frikandel and seaside. Upon his return to the States, he joined Deloitte where he would ultimately finish his career as a partner.
He was as passionate arguing the minutiae of financial strategy as he was capable of recalling major and minor historical events and trivial facts.
He was an avid reader and lover of fun, traits that would lead to hosting The Firkin Pub quiz fundraiser for The Chatham Emergency Squad annually for many years.
As a former rugby player, he loved to cheer on James and team at Marist College as an unofficial manager/benefactor.
He made his dream of living at the beach a reality when he purchased “Blue Moon” in Cape May. A house full of family memories, laughter, holidays and giggles.
He will be fondly remembered for his good nature, warmth, bear hugs and quick wit. Charitable donations in his memory can be made to https://www.multiplesystematrophy.org/
