Dorothy Ann Northup Koch - October 03, 1924 - May 05, 2024

Departed: 05/05/2024 (McMinnville)
Obituary Preview: Dorothy Ann Northup was born October 3, 1924 in Newport, Washington. She was the eldest daughter of Benjamin and Jessie Northup. She died peacefully at home on May 5, 2024 with family nearby, hearing readings from the Psalms.
Dorothy graduated from Linfield College in 1947 with a degree in English and taught High School English in Newport, Oregon after college for one year. She married former classmate Paul Koch on June 6, 1948 and, after teaching one year at Lincoln High School in Portland, made her husband and family her primary life work. Dorothy and Paul enjoyed 65 years together before Paul died in 2013.
From 1964 to 1975, she worked alongside Paul in his VW business, until an auto accident limited her ability to work outside the home. After a long hospitalization and intense physical therapy, Dorothy regained much of her life’s activities. After the accident, she lived with constant pain but that did not stop her from being kind and loving to all she met. Dorothy embraced hardship or joy with patience, grace and gratitude. She always looked for and focused on the bright, optimistic and hopeful side of things. Dorothy met Jesus at the Salmon Creek Methodist Church when she was eight. She had a deep and lasting love for God and prioritized her spiritual growth with daily devotions and prayer. She and Paul were active at First Baptist Church in Portland for many years. She sang in the choir, was part of the Homemakers Sunday school class and hosted a Women’s Circle group for several years. After many years, Dorothy and Paul joined Mountain Park Church in Lake Oswego. Dorothy was faithful to watch various TV preachers when she was no longer able to attend in person. One granddaughter wrote: “I loved how she always talked to me while pointing at me to make sure I understood what she was saying. The last thing she told me before she died was this: ‘Keep your eyes to the path of Christ Jesus. I love you.’”
Family and friends remember her as a rare, precious and elegant woman with a spunky sense of humor; her laughter lit up a room! “Grandma would create humor even out of little things,” a granddaughter shared, “and begin laughing so hard she couldn’t talk!“ Another granddaughter remembers: “She was kind, spicy, endlessly fashionable, witty, wise, generous and thoughtful. I hope to be like her.” When the elevator was installed, she joyfully rode up and down in it with her three delighted great grandsons.
She loved to gather the family together around a beautiful table and treasured being with her children and grandchildren, and all of the friends or significant others that they brought with them. Whomever she was with felt their importance as she focused upon them, listened, gave advice, and gifts of wisdom. She encouraged people when the chips were down and uplifted everyone in prayer. She made sure to always remember to call for birthdays or send a card.
She was captivated by beauty of every kind, from hairstyles, clothing, and music to flowers of all kinds. Roses, rhododendrons, fuschia, petunias were among her favorites. She loved watching the birds in her garden and scolded the squirrels for eating the birdseed. She loved to show off new orchid blooms or flower arrangements on the dining room table. She was so proud also of artistic creations made by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren especially food, art, and music. She loved beautiful clothes and dressed with great intention every day. She often chose two or three outfits the night before and narrowed it down in the morning. For special events, she planned weeks in advance.
She had an enduring and never-ending love for food (especially cookies and ice cream) and always wanted to know the most important detail of everyone’s experiences: what did you eat? In the past few years, she was open to trying new kinds of food and was faithful to watch one of her favorite cooking shows in the evening. One of her favorites, Ina Garten, said, “I love to take something ordinary and make it special.” Seems like maybe they were kindred spirits.
Dorothy practiced giving thanks all the time. As she navigated doctor, hair, nail appointments, she left so many smiles in her wake. She was thankful for all she experienced. If a person came to visit and brought anything: flowers, cookies, a picture, she would make a point of calling the same evening to say thank you. In the past few months and especially as words became fewer she relied on the phrase, “Thank you, thank you, thank you!” as a response to visits, calls, and cards.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Paul Koch, and her sister Lois Swift. She is survived by her sister Abbie and husband Keith Shaffer, of Coquille, Oregon; by her three children: Katherine Koch and her six children Nicholas Koch, Bethany Reiner, Christopher Arnold Koch, Maddie Reiner, Katie Koch, and Benjamin Koch; Steve Koch, his son Micah Koch, and grandsons, Jadon, Ryker, and Bowen; and Karen Shimer, her husband Brian, and their four daughters and families, Anna and Zack Armstrong, Josie and Bridget; Grace and Justin Copeland, Susanna and Collin Howder, Antonia, Theo and Gregory, and Gabrielle Shimer. Dorothy was interred at Evergreen Memorial Park in McMinnville, Oregon. A celebration of life will be held Monday, May 13, 2024, 1 pm, at Wilsonville United Methodist Church, Wilsonville, Oregon. Josef "Sepp" Werner Rosenast - March 16, 1936 - April 23, 2024

Departed: 04/23/2024 (McMinnville)
Obituary Preview: Josef Werner Rosenast, 88, of McMinnville, Oregon, passed away at his daughter’s home in Granbury, Texas, on April 23rd, 2024, reuniting with his recently deceased wife, Hilda.
Sepp was born to Josef and Anna (Klaus) Rosenast in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, on March 16th, 1936. His formative years during WWII were spent along the Rhein River, where his father was stationed as a border guard. There, he acted as ringleader of pranks among his 4 siblings. One time, he shaved a Swiss cross on top of his little brother’s head; smeared the surrounding hair with tomato sauce; then stationed him on the river bank, bent over with his “flag” pointed at passing boats. Another time, he took apart a rude neighbor’s horse-drawn wagon…then reassembled it on the roof of his barn. This is just a small sampling of his many youthful pranks.
After Swiss military service and graduation from an agricultural trade school, Sepp was among 55 men chosen from 1000 applicants to join the Zürich Police Academy. As a police officer, one of his favorite jobs was directing traffic; but typing his own reports in triplicate made him want to “throw the typewriter out the window.” At one point, he even made it to the cover of the national newspaper for his daring work in apprehending a criminal.
Sepp jumped at the chance to join fellow officers on a trip to America in 1963. Upon his return to Zürich, his sister Renata suggested that he share travel stories with her friend Hilda Frei, who had a keen interest in travel herself. The talk went well, and on August 29, 1964, the two were married in a small church in Morschach, Switzerland. Their first daughter, Elisabeth, was born in June 1965. Later that year, Sepp and Hilda decided to move to the United States. His first job in the US was as a garbage collector, which allowed time for tending his berry farm in Boring, Oregon. The family welcomed their second daughter, Andrea, in May 1968. After a brief stint in Albany, they purchased a dairy farm in McMinnville, where they remained for over 50 years. It was here that Tony, Trish, and Joey were born.
Sepp loved dairy farming. He LOVED cows. With a proud, never-give-up attitude, Sepp worked hard to provide for his family. He never quit: 7 days a week, 365 days a year, no vacations. He once had a fever of 104, and Hilda told him he couldn’t go out to the barn with a temperature that high. Sepp looked at the thermometer, said, “It goes up to 107” – and went out to milk his cows.
People would always comment about HIS HANDS— those big, rough, strong, thick-palmed, meaty bratwurst-fingered hands— and the firm handshake he would always greet people with. Although, you had to make absolutely sure to give him a good grip in return, or he would think less of you.
Sepp commonly judged the character or worth of a person by how well he thought they accomplished a certain task or chore: and he set a very high standard. While stoic and demanding, he could also be quite tender. His children recall times when he’d come into the house from the barn at night and go to their bedside, pull up their blankets, and make sure they were snugly covered up.
Sepp had a charm and charisma that made you glad to sit and listen to his stories, of which he had many. He gave out quirky nicknames, and made up all kinds of words and catchphrases, creating his own little scat-like jingles that he’d sing when in a jovial mood. The kids delighted in pushing the buttons of a broken radio in the old pick-up truck, while Sepp “played” the stations, singing different songs and making up his own commentary. He’d write funny little notes and poems and sing silly ditties to his wife. The kids remember him sharing long, sweet hugs with her in the kitchen. He sure did love her.
Sepp was a lifelong devotee of “Schwingen,” or Swiss wrestling, a national sport of Switzerland. He was a wrestler himself in the 1950s- 60s and a member of the Zürich Schwingklub. He was even crowned the Schwingerkönig (Schwing King). He kept up with the sport throughout his life and loved reading the Schwingen newspaper. He was also a member of the Portland Swiss Society and the Yodelklub Edelwyss.
There was also that coy, mischievous smirk of his. It either meant he found something funny or that you were on the receiving end of one of his pranks, or maybe both. And one could never forget that hysterical, infectious laugh of his. Sepp loved comedy and his boisterous, bursting guffaw could always be heard when something funny was on TV, like The Carol Burnett Show (especially the exploits of Tim Conway) or Benny Hill.
Later in life, Parkinson’s dealt a surprising blow to this man who had always been known for his strength and physicality, but it was a difficulty he never really complained about and just treated as one of life’s many foibles.
Make no mistake, complaints about everything else were still forthcoming. For instance, whenever some celebrity or famous person came out with a book, he would always say, “Oh boy... another book. Everybody has to write a book,” then facetiously comment, "Maybe I should write a book." With all of his stories, we wish he had.
He died surrounded by family and cows. He is survived by his children, Elisabeth “Rocky", Andrea “Quacks" Hamilton (Shawn), Tony "Mr. T” (Maggie), Trish “Yips” (Chad), and Joey “Chuckie"; grandchildren Austin Hamilton, Cassie Johnson, Mason and Gavin Rosenast, and Zander Candia; and great grandchild Corby Johnson— “A Wonder"; and brothers Hilmar, Peter, and Armin. He is predeceased by his wife of 59+ years, Hilda Rosenast, and his sister, Renata Ostertag. Auf wiedersehen Sepp/Joe/Dad/"Paps the Great”/Pappi
Liäbä di.
We love you.
A Rosary will be held at 12:30pm, Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at St. James Catholic Church in McMinnville, followed by a Funeral Mass at 1pm. Sepp will finally be laid to rest next to his love, Hilda, in a matching coffin in the St. James Catholic Cemetery. A reception will follow at The Golden Valley Brewery, where we hope everyone will continue to share their stories of Sepp with one another— if you knew Sepp, you had a story.

Jory Lee Abrams - April 13, 1950 - April 20, 2024

Departed: 04/20/2024 (McMinnville)
Obituary Preview: It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jory Lee Abrams on April 20, 2024 in McMinnville, Oregon. Jory, age 74, was born in Corvallis, Oregon to Kathleen and Herb Miller, the eldest of four children.
Jory led a rich life, both personal and professional. Her love for Gerry, her husband of forty-six years, was the cornerstone of her life. They were partners in every sense of the word, sharing their devotion to family, friends, and community (at Hillside, the moorage on Hayden Island, and Borrego Springs, CA), their commitment to causes important to them and their love of travel and the arts.
Jory cherished her extended family and friends, and she and Gerry were a constant and engaged part of all their lives. She was both a mentor and a loving aunt to her nieces and nephews, being there to celebrate their life milestones and offering sage advice as they grew. She was the friend you could count on to be there to share your good times and comfort you in your sorrow.
Jory was one of only four women to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Portland State University in 1979. She went on to enjoy a long and successful career with CH2MHIll and ultimately rose to the position of Vice President, Northwest Region, Traffic Transportation Manager. Jory retired in 2006, and made an effort to keep in touch with many of her CH2MHill friends since then.
She was the President of the PSU Alumni Association for several years and was recognized as one of the first members of the PSU Distinguished Engineering Alumni. She was a driving force in the PSU Advocates’ successful effort to retain the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science at PSU.
Jory and Gerry traveled often. They followed the Grand Prix through Europe early in their relationship, visited England numerous times, skied in Austria and Switzerland, and enjoyed several cruises in their later years.
Her family and friends will remember her for her unwavering love and support, her sense of adventure and her intense drive to accomplish what she set her mind to. She laughed easily, was fiercely protective of her loved ones and was always there for them in times of need.
Jory is survived by her husband, Gerald Abrams, and her siblings, Page Miller, Lisa Houghton and Clay Miller, as well as thirteen nieces and nephews and eleven great nieces and great nephews. A memorial service honoring Jory’s life will be held at 10:00 am on May 17, 2024 at Macy & Son Funeral Home in McMinnville, Oregon. To leave condole

Kenneth Dale Monagon - February 03, 1948 - April 07, 2024

Departed: 04/07/2024 (McMinnville)
Obituary Preview: Kenneth Dale Monagon has left this earthly world and moved on to his forever home with Jesus Christ. He was born in upstate New York. His family of 9 moved first to Arizona, Washington State then settling in Oregon for the majority of his life.
Ken was married to Gwen L (Blasingame) Monagon in 1969.
He had 5 children, 13 Grandchildren and 12 Great Grandchildren. He was proud to be their Father and Grandfather and loved his family dearly. They will be his forever legacy.
He leaves 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Also, a few Aunts and Uncles, many Cousins, Nieces and Nephews. He was a very fortunate man in that many of his “in law” relatives loved and adored him as well.
Ken worked as a mechanic on the race car, “The Ridler”, in his early years of marriage. That may have been what ignited his love of cars. From that he went to iron work, then on to sheet metal fabrication for more than 30 years. He also, became their Freight Manager for years. With a break in the sheet metal employment years, he became a self-employed restaurant owner for a several years, and then back to sheet metal fabrication. Well before retiring, he moved his family to the countryside of Dayton. They wanted to grow something healthy, deciding on blueberries. Ken and family tended 15 acres of organic blueberries for many years.
He was an avid fan of the Seahawks football team. He loved fishing and hunting with his father and brothers. There was a lot of family camping, hiking, and fishing.
He had a love for vintage and antique cars. Belonging to the Igniters Car Club. He spent many years working on his old cars. He completely rebuilt from the ground up a 1972 Ranchero. This car is beautiful and he enjoyed taking it to car shows all over the state and some out of state. The car won many honors and trophies. His latest endeavors were a 1923 Tall T Model A and a 1957 Ford convertible which he had owned as a teenager. It broke down, way back then, in a farmer’s field, eventually being dumped in a ravine. Many decades later someone pulled it out of the ravine and finding it in Ken’s name, looked him up and ask if he wanted it back. It was still registered and titled in his name. Of course, he said yes and had it hauled to his shop.
He was a patriotic man. He had a collection of eagles, which represented to him the strength and freedom to love America’s flag, God and Country.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for those grieving.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, a close friend or colleague may also be involved in writing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, as well as any charitable donations or memorial funds established in their name.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform it will be published on. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details, aiming for around 100-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased person. This can be a nice way to personalize the obituary and make it more meaningful to those reading it.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

You can usually submit an obituary to a newspaper through their website or by contacting their obituary department directly. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for the publication fee.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or platform. Some may charge by the word or line, while others may have a flat fee. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars.

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance, often as part of their estate planning or as a way to reflect on their life. This can be a unique opportunity to tell your own story and leave a lasting legacy.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the most basic information. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and accomplishments.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful, it's also okay to inject some personality and humor into the writing. This can help capture the essence of the person who has passed away.

How do I handle sensitive or difficult information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or difficult aspects of the deceased person's life that you're unsure how to address in the obituary, consider consulting with family members or a trusted advisor for guidance.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes, incorporating meaningful quotes or song lyrics can add depth and emotion to an obituary. Just be sure to verify the accuracy of any copyrighted material before publication.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publication varies depending on the newspaper or platform. Online obituaries may be published immediately, while print newspapers may take several days or even weeks.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, yes – but it depends on the publication or platform. If you need to make corrections or updates, contact the relevant party as soon as possible.

What if I want to publish an obituary in multiple newspapers?

You'll need to submit the obituary separately to each newspaper, following their individual guidelines and payment structures.

Yes! Many online platforms allow you to create a virtual memorial page where friends and family can share memories, photos, and condolences.

How do I find old obituaries from years ago?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites. Local libraries or historical societies may also have archived copies of old newspapers that you can access.
