Joyce Carlene Roush - October 01, 1929 - December 10, 2023

Departed: 12/10/2023 (Macon)
Obituary Preview: Joyce Carlene Roush died peacefully at the age of 94 on December 10, 2023 at the Eastern Star Home in Macon, IL. She was born on October 1, 1929 in Blue Mound, IL to Eloise (Brown) and Carl Baughman.
After high school, Joyce was a medical secretary until she married Lyle Roush in 1951. They were married for 57 years until his death in 2008. Also preceding her in death were her brother Jack, her sister Maxine, and her step-sister Kit.
She leaves behind a son, Brad Roush and special friend Denise Jones of Urbana, and a daughter Rene (Terry) Knowles of Centralia. She is also survived by three grandchildren Emily (Kyle) Phillips of Decatur; Ethan (Lindsay) Roush of Aurora, IL; and Heath (Glenda) Knowles of St. Petersburg, FL. Her five great grandchildren are Eva, Waverly, Carter, Macklin and Makenna. In addition, several nieces and nephews loved her and kept in touch with her, visiting even in November. Joyce was a longtime member of the Macon United Methodist Church and at one point taught Sunday school there. She also volunteered at the Macon Public Library for the children’s program and read to preschool kids. For many years, going to "Wednesday coffee" with other local women friends was routine. She was also a proud member of the Red Hat Society and participated in their many events. After having broken both hips she needed help at home and was lucky enough to find the care of a student nurse; Taylor Dance, who was the daughter of her hairdresser, Judy. She and Taylor became very close. Taylor was invaluable! She learned the art of growing and caring for plants and flowers from her grandmother whom she and her family had to move in with after her father died in 1933. Her flower gardens were a source of pride and joy for many years, until she could no longer kneel on the ground! For many years she and Lyle were members of Southside Country Club where they were avid golfers. She also enjoyed cooking and she loved hosting big holiday celebrations with her excellent food followed by competitive board or card games with all the kids and grandkids. She took up artistic painting as an adult with tutelage from her good friend Sally Sprague. She had a love of decorating; shopping; kayaking; traveling; and of course, spoiling her three adoring grandchildren who coined the nickname “Mima.” Quite fittingly, at the end of her life, many at the nursing home called her Mima again!
On Thursday, December 14, 2023 a visitation will be held at 10:00 A.M. at the Macon United Methodist Church with a service to be held immediately afterward at 11:00 A.M., followed by graveside services at South Macon Township Cemetery.
