Grace M. Card, May 6, 2024 - April 18, 1944 - May 06, 2024

Departed: 05/06/2024 (Whitman)
Obituary Preview: Grace M. Card (80) of Sagamore Beach, MA, passed away on May 6th, 2024. Grace was married to George E. Card Jr for 58 years prior to his passing in May of 2023. She is survived by her two children: her son, Robert E. Card, and his wife, Jean Card, of Madison, CT; and her daughter, Andrea Stevens, and her husband, Russ, of Boxford, MA. Grace is also survived by her sister, Patricia, and her husband, Jerry Prew, of Carver, MA. She adored her grandchildren: Garrett, Alexandra, and Nick Stevens; Andrew, Will, and Michael Card; along with her wonderful and loving nieces and nephews.
Grace was born and raised in Braintree, MA and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1961. After high school she had close friends who all traveled to many destinations including the World’s Fair in both Queens, NY 1964 and then Montreal in 1967. She worked for The New England Telephone Company, where she met George, and married in 1967. In 1972 they purchased a small parcel of land just 100 feet from the home she was raised in. They built a modest home where they would raise their children with great neighbors and friends. Grace was always active in her children’s school and community. She was a successful realtor for Jack Conway Co. where she and George went on regular annual trips for top performers.
Grace and George retired to Sagamore Beach in 2000 where they built their dream home, a small humble cape with bunkbeds for the grandchildren and a short walk to the beach. They loved their neighbors and their time out on the back deck. Grace was known for her spectacular garden. She spent most of her days working, admiring, and shopping to add to the beautiful landscape she and George built together. Those who would visit always left with cut flowers or a seedling she pulled out on the spot with directions to plant it soon. Many have those flowers growing in their gardens to be enjoyed for years to come.
Grace and George spent many winters on Little Gasparilla Island in Florida with dear friends. She was known for organizing and winning the yearly golf cart decorating parade contests and planning ladies’ luncheons. She should be remembered for always having beautiful fruit trays for guests, matching t-shirts for the grandchildren after a long day at the beach, putting lobsters to sleep, her famous Thanksgiving stuffing, and of course her Irish Terrier Emmit. She celebrated her 80th birthday with her family and newest friends at Keystone Place. She so enjoyed her community at Keystone where she felt loved and cared for. We take comfort in knowing she is reunited with George, and they are both happy and healthy, watching over all of us. Grace and George’s cremated remains will be spread together at a later time. They requested no services and in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at: https://www2.jdrf.org/site/TR?fr_id=9629&pg=personal&px=13115641

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They can help facilitate condolences, allow people to pay their respects, and provide closure for loved ones.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased. Funeral homes or crematories may also offer assistance with writing and publishing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), and surviving family members. You may also include hobbies, achievements, or other personal details that celebrate the person's life.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's best to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for 1-2 paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes! Many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload one or more photos of the deceased. This can help make the tribute more personal and meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment (if required).

Are there any costs associated with publishing an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers charge a fee for publishing an obituary. The cost varies depending on the publication and the length of the obituary. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication or platform. Some may allow revisions or corrections, while others may not. Be sure to review your obituary carefully before submitting it.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online platforms may publish immediately, while print newspapers may take several days or weeks.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes! Many people choose to write their own obituary as a way to have control over how they're remembered. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually without additional biographical information. An obituary provides more detail about the person's life and accomplishments.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Absolutely! Many families choose to include details about preferred charities or memorial funds in lieu of flowers.

How do I find an old obituary from years ago?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites. Local libraries or historical societies may also have access to archived newspapers and records.

Can I republish an old obituary on social media or a memorial website?

Check with the original publication or copyright holder to ensure you have permission to republish. You may need to obtain permission or provide proper attribution.

What if I want to keep the funeral private?

You can still publish an obituary without including funeral details. Simply state that services will be private or by invitation only.

Can I include humor or lighthearted moments in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Feel free to share anecdotes or personality traits that celebrate the person's life.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform immediately to report the error. They may issue a correction or reprint the revised obituary.

Can I create an online memorial or tribute page instead of a traditional obituary?

Yes! Online memorial platforms allow you to create a personalized tribute page with photos, stories, and memories of your loved one.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress?

Dona€™t hesitate to reach out to a trusted friend, family member, or professional counselor for support. You can also consider seeking guidance from a funeral home or bereavement organization.

Can I include quotes, poems, or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! These can add depth and meaning to the tribute, as well as provide comfort to those reading it.

How do I ensure that my loved one's legacy lives on through their obituary?

Focusing on their accomplishments, passions, and values can help preserve their memory and inspire future generations.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who was young or died suddenly?

Sensitivity and compassion are key when writing about someone who died prematurely. Focus on celebrating their life and acknowledging the impact of their loss on loved ones.

Can I use social media to share an obituary or notify friends and family of a passing?

Yes! Social media can be a powerful tool for spreading news quickly and reaching a wider audience. Just be mindful of privacy settings and respect for the grieving family.
