Departed: 05/17/2022 (Granite Falls)
Obituary Preview: Donald Lee Kirkpatrick passed away peacefully on May 17, 2022, in his home, surrounded with the love of his family. Don was born in Charlotte, North Carolina on October 17, 1930 to Leroy Houston and Callie Virginia Kirkpatrick. He grew up in Albemarle. His childhood memories included stories of road trips with his dad, summers at the coast and working at the Sanitary Fish Market in Morehead City. Don graduated from Albemarle High School in 1949. It was there his lifelong love of sports and particularly football, all began. After high school, Don attended Lenoir-Rhyne College on a football and basketball scholarship. Some of his proudest moments came on the football field as a Lenoir-Rhyne Bear. It was on the tennis courts at Lenoir-Rhyne where Don first laid eyes on the love of his life, Edna Joyce Robinson, and he was smitten from the start with “the prettiest girl”. Don and Joyce were married on December 27,1953 at Miller’s Lutheran Church in Hickory. Soon thereafter, they moved to Granite Falls when Don took a job as the head football coach at Granite Falls High School and lived in the teacherage on Falls Avenue first, before building their home of more than sixty years on Clearview Street. Together, Don and Joyce raised three sons, James Lee, Donald Lynn and Marc Alan, all of whom Don coached and supported in sports and in all their endeavors across the years and into college. With Joyce, Don spent the rest of his life in Granite Falls where he impacted the lives of many more youth in countless positive ways during his years as an educator and coach. Early in his career, he led the 1956 Granite Falls team to a state championship. He took several more “Blue Demon '' teams to postseason play and later the first South Caldwell High School team to the state championship game. In 1968, Don proudly coached in the North Carolina East West All Star football game. He retired from education and coaching in 1987.Don was a charter member and former president of the North Carolina Coaches Association. In 2013, Don was inducted into the North Carolina Football Coaches Hall of Fame. He felt a calling for civic service and was devoted to his community, serving on the board of Granite Falls Recreation Center for several years and in the Lions Club for sixty two years, ten or more as director. In retirement, Don served several terms on the Granite Falls Town Council and one term as mayor pro tem. For over sixty years, Don was an active member of Philadelphia Lutheran Church, where he always aimed for perfect attendance in his Sunday school and served on the church council. He and Joyce loved little more than a Sunday with all of their children and grandchildren joining them in the pews at Philadelphia Church. Don loved the home he shared with Joyce on 1 Clearview Street all the way to his last days. They made their home warm and welcoming for all who visited, and Don found special joy in the family gatherings and wonderful traditions that he carried out for the grandchildren he and Joyce so loved. This included an annual Easter egg hunt, treat bags at Christmas time he filled himself and fresh watermelon and homemade ice cream by the pool several times every summer. Don is survived by many beloved friends and family, including three children, James (Mary), Donald (Misty) and Marc (Lisa), seven grandchildren, Valerie (Lamar), Molly, Davis, Miller, Jackson, Justice and Cooper, four great-grandchildren, Jayden, Jediah, Jrue and Javeon and his lovely wife of 68 years, Joyce Kirkpatrick, whom he doted over and adored into his last days, in fact making her morning kisses one of his very last wishes. Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They help to notify people of the funeral or memorial service arrangements, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences to the family.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with writing the obituary. The writer should be someone who knew the deceased well and can provide accurate and meaningful information.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or memorial websites.
