Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and provide an opportunity for loved ones to pay tribute and share memories.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer will gather information from the family and create a concise and respectful summary of the person's life.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, burial arrangements, and any charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or memorial websites.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the notice and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and requirements. They may have specific guidelines for formatting, word count, and deadlines. You can usually find this information on their website or by calling their office.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary in a newspaper?

The cost varies depending on the newspaper, location, and length of the obituary. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for a print publication. Online obituary platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and legacy. However, it's essential to discuss your wishes with your loved ones to ensure they understand your intentions.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites like Ancestry.com or Newspapers.com. Local libraries or historical societies may also have archives of past newspapers that you can access.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, corrections or edits can be made if there are errors or inaccuracies in the original obituary. However, this may depend on the publication's policies and deadlines. It's essential to review the obituary carefully before submitting it for publication.

What is a death notice versus an obituary?

A death notice is a brief announcement that simply states the person's name, age, date of death, and funeral information. An obituary is a more detailed biography that provides additional context about the person's life.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help capture the personality and spirit of the deceased.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues or controversies surrounding the deceased's life, it's best to approach these topics with tact and discretion. Consider consulting with family members or close friends to determine what information should be shared publicly.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, poems, or lyrics that were meaningful to the deceased can add a personal touch to the obituary and provide comfort to those reading it.

What is a living obituary?

A living obituary is a written tribute to someone who is still alive. It's often used as a way to honor individuals who have made significant contributions or achievements during their lifetime.

How do I write an obituary for someone who was cremated?

The process is similar to writing an obituary for someone who was buried. Be sure to include information about any memorial services or celebrations of life that will take place.

Can I publish an obituary online only?

Yes! Many online platforms specialize in hosting digital obituaries. These websites often offer features like guest books, photo galleries, and donation links.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. For print newspapers, expect 1-5 business days for publication. Online platforms may publish immediately or within 24 hours.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

In some cases, yes! If you want to republish an obituary on a special anniversary or birthday of the deceased, contact the original publication or online platform to inquire about their policies.

What if I need help writing an obituary?

If you're struggling to write an obituary, consider seeking assistance from a funeral home staff member, professional writer, or online resources that provide templates and guidance.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Absolutely! Many families prefer that donations be made to a favorite charity instead of sending flowers. Be sure to include the charity's name and contact information in the obituary.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

Diligently fact-check dates, names, and other details with family members and records. A single error can cause unnecessary distress for loved ones.
