Obituary Preview: Mrs. Joanne (Joan Palmer) Tousignant, 91, died peacefully on Friday, April 15, 2022. Blessedly, family was by her side.
Joanne was born in Belmont on March 2, 1931 to Byron and Edna Palmer. She was raised in a loving and musical family, the 3rd of 4 children and graduated from Belmont High School in 1949. With her school friends, she shared many trips and “good clean fun”. She worked at the John Hancock in Boston for a few years, making new friends and sharing many fun times. On a vacation with a good friend to Falmouth, MA in 1952, she met Larry. They were married on April 16, 1955 at St. Luke’s Church in Belmont. They had 2 children whom they cherished and raised in Holliston, Pittsfield and South Hadley, MA. They enjoyed 22 happy years together with family, relatives and good friends until Larry’s sudden death in 1977. Joanne, with much inner strength and love, continued to raise her two teenagers on her own.
Joanne loved dancing, traveling, nature, family pets, music and art. She enjoyed many exciting trips with family and friends: Hawaii, California, England, Italy, France, Kiawah, Florida and Ireland. She thoroughly enjoyed her years as a docent at the Springfield Art Museum. Anita L. DiGiacomandrea - April 21, 1943 - April 10, 2022

Departed: 04/10/2022 (Watertown)
Obituary Preview: Anita L. DiGiacomandrea  4/21/43- 4/10/22 Watertown, Massachusetts age 78 Beloved wife for 51 years of Anthony DiGiacomandrea
Anita was born in Newton Mass. where her parents John and Mary Kulesza raised their children. Starting at the oldest Joan, John (Jack) and Patty. Anita attended Newton South High School. Where she was very liked by her class! Keeping close to home she started working at a local factory, Sherman Paper. Where she met the love of her life, Tony!  Although Anita was a hard working woman, she was known for being late pretty often. So much so that a friend at the paper company would make sure to punch her in on time while she was running 10 minutes late even though she lived a block away from the factory.
Anita and Tony became dear friends at work and their strong friendship evolved into a loving relationship. Anita and Tony married on June 30, 1967 and then moved to Watertown Mass. where they raised their beloved family. Anita and Tony were inseparable. They both loved family parties, their bowling leagues, and shooting pool in the basement. Their lives were full of excitement; it could be something as simple as a family card game, a cookout, or jumping in the car to drive to Maine to grab a hotdog from Flos. No matter what it was, they did it together!
Anita always kept us on our toes. She wanted to know every detail of every moment of every story. If you came home from dinner she would want to know what the waiter was wearing and what the sides were with the meals. She also wanted to know if the butter was soft whipped butter or a hard square! haha. She also didn't miss a thing. She had Olcott Street on lockdown. She knew if we had new neighbors, what time people left for work, or how ridiculous someone parked their car. And trust me we have all inherited that trait.
Anita was a busy woman but had a lot of hobbies. Bingo, crocheting, reading, ceramics, gardening, even collecting random things from baseball cards to newspaper articles. But later in life she was all about Farmville and countless games on the computer and ipad.
Anita was a strong, fierce but gentle woman. Who fought vigorously for the last three years battling cancer. Anita passed peacefully at home surrounded by family. She never lost her compassion or sense of humor.  We all will be forever grateful for her love and warmth. She was a devoted wife, nurturing mother, and loyal friend.  In addition to her beloved husband Tony she was the loving mother of Robert W. DiGiacomandrea and wife lyn of Mableton, GA. Darlene L. Jabs of Maynard. Linda J. Tardiff of Natick. Anthony P. JR and fiancee Colleen O'Brien of Watertown. And the late Diane M. Turner and her surviving husband Matthew Turner. Anita always enjoyed visiting with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved hearing all about their sporting events and activities. She was a loving grandmother to 10 grandchildren: Jay, Rita, Ashley, Carl, Stephen, Dominic, Erik Jr, Camryn, Shawn, Caleigh and 3 great grandchildren Ava, Emma, and Logan.
A Funeral Service will be held in the MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home, 270 Main St. Watertown, MA 02472 on Tuesday April 19, 2022, at 11 am. Relatives & friends kindly invited. Visiting hours Monday 4-8 PM. Interment Ridgelawn Cemetery.

William P. Fennell - October 02, 1939 - April 07, 2022

Departed: 04/07/2022 (Watertown)
Obituary Preview: William (Bill) Peter Fennell, born on October 2, 1939, passed away at 82, peacefully at home in the loving arms of his wife Vera and his two daughters, Denise and Sharon, after a fierce and courageous battle with Lung Cancer on April 7, 2022. Bill was passionate, determined, and unwavering in his pursuit to provide his family with a better life than he had as a child. Bill had an instinctual resilience for hard work, a zeal for information, and innate knowledge of engineering. He was wise at a young age and knew The United States Marine Corp could offer him expertise and opportunities that would broaden his horizons. Bill left high school, enlisted in the Marine Corps, and remained a strong and proud Marine until his last breath. He lived wholeheartedly by the code; Honor, Courage, and Commitment in every stage of his life, most evident in his final days, "Semper Fideles"!
Bill was honorably discharged from his service and returned home to Cambridge, MA. His desire to obtain his diploma required him to return to High School, where he proudly graduated as a young adult. Intern, offering him the opportunity to instill the importance of education and perseverance in your passion to his family in the future. Bill continued his education by taking night classes at MIT while working two jobs.
Severe fatigue and exhaustion landed him in the emergency room of Cambridge City Hospital. He was smitten' with his ER nurse Vera Francis DiLuzio. Bill's charm, charisma, and irrepressible humor were infectious, and their love story began. The boy from Central Square and the girl from Newton Corner started their life of endless adventures and were married on June 5, 1965. Over their 57 years of marriage, Bill's dream of having a beautiful, loving, and cared-for family has become his most incredible legacy. His drive and determination, generosity, and kindness knew no bounds. He was a loyal friend, mentor, and confidant to all he knew—beginning in the early days in The Cambridge Caballero's Drum Corps to his later years at the Nanny Cay Marina in the British Virgin Islands. His most significant accomplishments began in 1978 when he established The William P. Fennell Co., an industrial metals business; supplying, building, and repairing machinery up and down the North East Coast. Bill loved to travel his ability to map out any geographic location was unmatched. In 1996 he purchased his first property in York, Maine; in 2019, he sold that property and purchased for Vera the home of her dreams again in York Beach, Maine. That door has remained open to family and friends for 23 years; Bill's passion and integrity for those he loved were unwavering. Spending time surrounded by his favorite people is what brought him his greatest life joys. Bill was an avid sailor and methodical Captain. In 2000 he purchased his sailboat "The Caballero," a 46 ft. Bavarian set sail in the British Virgin Islands, welcoming friends and family aboard to enjoy that Paradise Bill called home for four months every year, achieving his lifelong dream. Bill was not just a husband, a father, a grandfather, a brother, an uncle, a friend; he was everyone's "Bucka"! We believe a close family member summed it up best; "Bill is now on a sailboat, somewhere with God, and there is no need for navigation, for the trip will never end."
William (Bill) Fennell is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Vera F. (Diluzio) Fennell. Daughters Sharon Carrieri, her husband Massimo of Newton, Denise Marie Christina Fennell Pasqualone, and her husband Richard of Los Angeles, CA. Dear brother of Daniel Fennell, Katherine "Kay" Coughlin, Richard Fennell, and the late John Fennell and Patricia MacDonald. Loving grandfather of Rocco and Massimo Carrieri and Anthony and Isabella Pasqualone. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and his beloved and chosen family of the "02458" neighborhood.

Howard John Beaunoyer - June 18, 1943 - March 17, 2022

Departed: 03/17/2022 (Watertown)
Obituary Preview: BEAUNOYER, Howard
Of Joplin Missouri, formerly of Somerville, passed away on Thursday March 17, 2022.
Beloved son of the late Edward & Barbara (Walton) Beaunoyer, dear brother of Linda Fiorello of Windham NH, Vaughn Beaunoyer of Joplin Missouri, and the very recently deceased Marie Brueggeman of Watertown.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Missouri.
Howard, better known to his many friends and co-workers as “Howie”, was born in Sanford Maine but was a Somerville resident for many decades.  He was a graduate of Somerville High School and a loyal parishioner and volunteer of Saint Ann’s Catholic Church in Winter Hill.  He lived in Medford briefly before settling in Joplin, MO the past several years to enjoy the company of his brother Vaughn and the many nieces, nephews, and extended family in the area.  He enjoyed his retired life in southwest Missouri and quickly became a parishioner of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Webb City.  Howie was a proud union member with the railroad for close to 40 years.  Starting with the Boston and Maine (B&M) Railroad in Billerica before retiring with Amtrak in the early 2000’s.  He also briefly served in the United States Army.
Howie was a die-hard Boston sports fan and would frequently call relatives back home to check in on all the teams’ latest news, or to complain about how “bad” the teams were doing.  He was an avid candlepin bowler and participated in many leagues and tournaments over the years.  Howie was well known wherever he went, was always quick to lend a hand, and was a gentleman to one and all.  He made sure that every member of the family was up to date on all the happenings across the generations, making sure no one missed out on any news.  He will surely be missed by the many friends, coworkers, and loved ones blessed by his presence over the years.
Howard will be interred in his family’s grave, along with his sister Marie, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett.

Marie Janet Brueggeman - September 25, 1950 - March 04, 2022

Departed: 03/04/2022 (Watertown)
Obituary Preview: A Funeral Service for Marie Janet Brueggeman will be celebrated on Saturday March 12, 2022, at 12 Noon, in the MacDonald Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home.
A daughter of the late Edward & Barbara (Walton) Beaunoyer, Marie passed away Friday afternoon. She was 71.
She was the loving mother of James J. “JJ” Brueggeman & his wife Susanne of Watertown. Beloved grandmother of William & Timothy Brueggeman. Dear sister of Linda Fiorello of Windham NH, Howard Beaunoyer and Vaughn Beaunoyer both of Joplin Missouri.  She is also survived by many nieces and nephews in New Hampshire and Missouri.
Marie was born and raised in Somerville.  She was a graduate of Somerville High School and lived there for many years.  She also resided in Salem, Lynn, and Medford before settling in Watertown the past several years.  Marie worked at Cara Donna’s Bakery in Magoun Square Somerville for several years and most recently with Auto Zone.
Marie loved nature and animals alike.  She was especially fond of cats and cherished the many she had as companions throughout her lifetime.  She was a big fan of Disney movies and would never miss the chance to relax while watching them along with other classics films.  However, her most treasured moments were the times spent being “Mem-May” to her grandsons Will and Timmy.  She always looked forward to long car rides capped off by “lunch dates” with her son JJ’s family.  Whether it be summertime trips to local clam shacks, impromptu stops at classic car shows, leisurely drives along New England’s many coastlines, or grabbing a meal at Friendly’s in the middle of winter, these were the times she was at her happiest.
When distances between her and family members made visits less frequent, Marie found other ways to connect, whether through handwritten letters to her nieces or very long phone conversations with her siblings.  You would never find Marie without a smile on her face, and she always found a way to use humor or silliness to make you feel at ease.  She made sure that when people left her home that they had a sweet treat, or warm hug, to remember her by.
Visiting hours will be held in the MacDonald Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home 270 Main St., Watertown on Saturday March 12th from 10 AM to 12 Noon.  A service will immediately follow at 12 Noon, at the funeral home. Rather than a “standard” obituary, the Family would like to share with the reader excerpts from a Blog written by Susan Goodman three years ago. Ms. Goodman interviewed Evelyn in person on multiple occasions for a piece she was writing about “Women’s lives at 85+”. The family felt that her piece describes Evelyn’s life best – in her own words. ************************
“I’ve seen a lot of changes during my lifetime. For many years, the only way to keep our food cold was to wait for the iceman to fill the icebox. Now look at me! I’m on the Internet.” Evelyn Casey, age 96, holds her tablet and views the stunning photos her son Kevin has sent from his travels to the Canadian Rockies. “The pictures are so clear. I can practically smell the fresh air.”
It is truly remarkable that Evelyn can enjoy sights that are thousands of miles away that her son discovered just moments before. Evelyn grew up in a simpler time. Her world was shaped by firm rules and full compliance was the expectation. She was the daughter of immigrants. Her father, born in Ireland, taught his children to “remember their place.”
“The Irish were not that well appreciated at the time. My father told us to stay in the background. Don’t show off. Don’t be bossy. You’re lucky to be alive and living in such a great place.” There were additional directives passed along. “Growing up, I learned to appreciate the Church and education. These had been the guiding principles taught by my father.”
Like many young people, when Evelyn first entered the world of work, she had to endure some toe stubbing until she found her path. She can still recall the awkwardness of applying for a sales job at the Grover Cronin department store in Waltham. “The job included modeling the featured clothing. I was the same age as all the other girls at the interview but they looked more grown up. They were wearing makeup, something I was never allowed to do. I knew I was out of my league.”
Evelyn explored other options. She was hired as a clerk at the Waltham Watch Factory. It proved to be a good fit. This was the start of a satisfying career as a bookkeeper.
When Evelyn was married in 1945, she and her husband Frank set up a household that mirrored the strict tenor of her childhood home. Frank was in the Navy and he brought the orderliness of that world into their everyday lives. As a Navy wife, Evelyn was familiar with the drill. The Casey’s three children were raised to be exceedingly polite and well behaved. They knew from an early age how to decipher right from wrong. Money was limited, as it had been when Evelyn was a girl, but that never impacted the family’s ability to “dress the best they could.”
Academic success was highly valued, and each of the Casey’s kids went to college. Once the kids were out of the house, Evelyn returned to bookkeeping.
James, their eldest child, embraced the family’s conviction that military service was a citizen’s obligation. He trained to be a helicopter pilot and left for Viet Nam in January 1969. Five months later, the Caseys received the news that military families most dread. His helicopter was shot down and James did not survive the attack.
The grief was all encompassing. Evelyn’s religious faith carried her through these painful years. She discovered that she coped best when she stayed busy, so she continued to be as active as possible.
When Evelyn retired, her community was opening one of the first senior centers in the region. It was a new concept. Towns were turning their attention to providing space and activities to cater to the needs and interests of their older citizens. Evelyn decided to see what the Watertown Senior Center, with its very accessible membership fee of $.50, had to offer.
Evelyn started off as a participant in an exercise class, but before long, she stepped into a leadership role. For many years, she oversaw classes on nutrition and exercise. Although she didn’t have experience with either, she quickly got up to speed. She took a night class on nutrition and read popular magazines that featured the latest trends. Weight control was a primary target of her class, and she devised a clever approach. Each week, participants came to the senior center to be weighed. Those who had gained weight during the week had to pay a dime. The weight-losers were eligible to win whatever amount of money was collected. Evelyn called the program “The No-Belly Award”.
Evelyn also led a dance class. When the previous instructor decided to stop the class during the summer because the gym lacked air conditioning, Evelyn was very willing to manage the heat and the class.
The years spent at the senior center were particularly special. Evelyn relished the chance to develop new friendships and add structure to her week. Perhaps most importantly, she opened herself up to new possibilities, discovering skills and passion that had previously been unrecognized.
“The people at the center saw something that I was unable to see. I was a teacher!” While no longer at the front of a room encouraging participants to lose weight or teaching new dance moves, Evelyn remains as busy as ever. Of her nine great grandchildren, two are the enthusiastic recipients of her favorite hobby: creating clothes for the girls’ Barbie dolls. Evelyn’s daughter Maureen is a seamstress and she passes along scraps of material so that her mother can create unique fashions.
It’s a toss-up as to who derives the most pleasure from Evelyn’s handiwork: the two great granddaughters who love to showcase their dolls’ new fashions or the clothing designer who is always up for the challenge of finding a creative way to use a piece of unused cloth.
For Evelyn, the benefits are extensive. First, she truly enjoys engaging in an activity that she didn’t experience in her own childhood. “I never played with dolls. I was too busy taking care of my younger brothers and sisters!”
When engrossed in a hobby, Evelyn never feels alone.
“You can’t possibly feel lonely if you use your hands. It gets your mind going and time just flies by.
Perhaps most rewarding, Evelyn appreciates the welcomed timelessness in all that she creates.

Robert A. "Bob" Manzelli - June 13, 1937 - January 17, 2022

Departed: 01/17/2022 (Watertown)
Obituary Preview: Manzelli, Robert A. “Bob”, passed away on January 17th, 2022, at the age of 84.
Bob was born in Roxbury, and was a longtime resident of Watertown and Rockport.
He was the son of the late Attilio and Ida (Gatti) Manzelli. Loving and devoted husband of Barbara E. (West) Manzelli for 63 years. Loving father of Marc A. Manzelli & his wife Christine of Wakefield, Michael Paul Manzelli & his wife Betsy of Gloucester, and Michelle M. Bodoni & her husband Rob of Tewksbury. Dear brother of Marilyn J. Cookson of Marston Mills, and the late Francis P. Manzelli and Thomas P. Manzelli. Loving grandfather of Brianna West Huddleston & her husband James, Kash E. Manzelli & his wife Maura, Sean C. Manzelli, Allison Heath Manzelli, Julia E. Bodoni, & Matthew R. Bodoni. Also survived by his sister-in-law Jane; brother-in-law John; and many nieces and nephews. He was inspired and driven to serve others. He attended Watertown High school and Huntington prep. He graduated from Boston College and received his active duty commission as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army in 1959, where he trained as an artillery officer. He was assigned as a reserve instructor in the 5th Howitzer Battalion, 5th Artillery. He was honorably discharged in 1968 as a 1st Lieutenant . He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans organization. He was a distinguished member of the Watertown Rotary club. He served on the board of trustees at the Watertown Savings Bank; an aptly named position for such an honorable man.  He owned Munhall Energy company for many years. He was a giant in the home heating industry, but more importantly he was loved by employees and customers alike. He used to say “it always gave me a good feeling to go into that house over there and give them heat.”
Civic duty was an important calling for him. In 1966 he won his election to the Watertown selectman’s office at 29, one of the youngest ever.
He served three terms, one as chairman of the board. In 1975 he was sworn in as a state representative on Beacon Hill after winning the election for the Watertown district. He served as member of the government regulations committee. He was a champion of his Watertown constituents, giving them a voice at the state level. He completed his service to Watertown as the town Purchasing agent.
He played a baseball game at Fenway Park with fellow state reps, Republicans vs Democrats. He lined a few singles. He was extremely active and enjoyed many years of pickup basketball with dear friends at the Watertown Boys and Girls club. His corner jump shot was money, as the story goes.
His greatest joy was his six grandchildren, he adored them all unconditionally. While his whole life is something to be celebrated, it’s his moments as a grandfather that stand out. Papa, as he was known to his 6 grandchildren, absolutely adored his grandkids and the feeling was wholeheartedly reciprocated. He could often be found cheering them on from the sidelines of sporting events and in the front row of concert auditoriums, playing in the waves at Long Beach, building snowmen and cross country skiing, or running the meanest poker game around—comprised of his grandkids and beach grandkids— from the kitchen of the beach house, him smoking real cigars, the kids using pretzel sticks as stand in cigars.
At his core, he was a man of honor, character, decency. His love and overall positive enthusiasm for everything that is life was palpable to everyone around him and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
His lessons, guidance, and blessings will be with us forever. Funeral from the MacDonald Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home at 270 Main St., WATERTOWN, Saturday, January 22, at 9 AM, followed by Funeral Mass in the Church of St. Patrick, 212 Main St., Watertown, at 10 AM.
