Departed: 03/17/2023 (Pompton Plains)
Obituary Preview: Edith M. Cannizzaro (nee Baldi), 84, of Highland Lakes, NJ, passed away on March 17, 2023.
Born in Jersey City as the oldest daughter of Charles and Lena Baldi, Edie lived in Union City until the age of 13 when the family moved to Fort Lee. She married Joseph L. Cannizzaro in 1960 and the couple settled in Lincoln Park. Edie called Lincoln Park her home for 40 years, moving to Highland Lakes in 2007, shortly after her retirement.
Edie was a successful career woman at a time when this was rare. She worked diligently from right after secretarial school to her retirement at age 70. Every 10 years or so, Edie would reinvent herself in the corporate world and, with each new career, she enjoyed greater success. She began her work life as a marketing associate for J. Walter Thompson Ad Agency in New York City. She paused her career to raise her children. When she resumed, Edie achieved success as a travel agent, an executive secretary, and a paralegal. She was fastidious, the go-to person in each of her positions, making sure every last detail was taken care of. You knew that if you gave it to Edie, it would get done and done properly.
After Edie retired, she volunteered her talents to the office of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Highland Lakes, and with the church’s Rosary Society. She was an avid football fan, supporting her son and grandsons’ football careers, ringing her famous cowbell at every game to cheer them on. You could be sure to find her every Sunday in the fall watching her beloved Giants and every other football game that was on.
Edie is predeceased by Joseph, her husband of 41 years. Baldi, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Her family was always her top priority, as she would ensure that Joe and the kids (Lisa, Lainie, and Joe) were cared for like only an Italian Mom could do. She not only provided for her immediate family that way, but everyone she could. She earned the nickname “Feedie Edie” as she made sure to feed family, neighbors, friends, church goers, at every opportunity with Italian dishes (lasagna, risotto, eggplant parmesan) or her favorite deviled eggs. Cooking for others was at the heart of her caregiving and demonstration of love.

Rosa Gifford - July 20, 1955 - February 25, 2023

Departed: 02/25/2023 (Pompton Plains)
Obituary Preview: It is with great sorrow, the Wizner and Weiberth families announce the passing of our strong, brave and compassionate daughter, sister, mother and aunt, Rosa Gifford (Weiberth), at the age of 67.
Born in Mergelstetten, Heidenheim, Germany in 1955, Rosa was just 1 year old when she came by plane to the US with her mother, Rose Weiberth and brother, Franz Weiberth, reuniting with their father, Franz Weiberth, in New Jersey to start their new life.
Rosa gave birth to her son, Joey, in 1974. She was a devoted mother, friend, confidant, companion, advocate and caregiver. She encouraged his passions for electronics, and they regularly bonded over food and TV. Joey was the apple of her eye, who she loved with all that she was.
Rosa’s nature as an advocate and caregiver became her calling when she began a long career as a registered nurse. Her commitment to the field and her patients was evident when she went back to complete higher education in her 50’s. Rosa’s lively character, no nonsense demeanor and absolute commitment to her job made her loved by colleagues and respected by management of the many hospitals and ORs she worked in. She was particularly proud of leading initiatives to introduce robotic surgical products in several ORs.
Rosa was a beautiful person, both inside and out. She was a woman full of vibrant life and energy. Rosa took absolute pride in her appearance, never leaving the house without her makeup being pristine, and her outfit fit for the catwalk. Her trademark bottle of Riesling and smile followed her to every family gathering and party.
Rosa loved her German heritage and its culture, music and the thrill of driving her dodge charger. She loved reading, day trips to the beach, doting on Joey with McDonalds, and spoiling her nieces and nephews. She bought everyone an enormous amount of Christmas popcorn, loved a devil dog for breakfast and a light and sweet iced coffee from Dunkin’.
Rosa passed on February 25th, 2023, comfortably and surrounded by family at Morristown Medical Center. Her sudden loss is shocking to us all, and leaves a gap in our family that cannot be filled. Rosa is predeceased by her father, Franz Weiberth, and is survived by her mother Rose Weiberth, son Joey Rizzo, brother Franz Weiberth, sister-in-law Carol Weiberth, sister Elizabeth Wizner, brother-in-law Adam Wizner, and her many nieces and nephews who loved her like a second mother - one that took spoiling very seriously.
Rosa’s favorite song, and ringtone for the last 10 years, was “On Top of The World” by Imagine dragons. She said it made her smile no matter how often she listened. The opening lyrics “if you love somebody, you better tell them while they’re here” could not ring more true.
There will be a private cremation with a celebration of life to be organized later this spring, details will be shared when available.
Rest in peace Rosa. You are loved. https://everloved.com/life-of/rosa-gifford/obituary/

Norma B. Simmons - February 23, 1925 - February 16, 2023

Departed: 02/16/2023 (Pompton Plains)
Obituary Preview: Norma B. Simmons, of Cedar Crest Village in Pompton Plains, formerly of Germantown, New York, died at home Thursday, February 16, 2023, just one week shy of her 98th birthday.
Born in Brooklyn, Norma was one of three children born to Richard and Beatrice Ahrens. Raised in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, she graduated from high school there before moving upstate to live with family. While out on a double date in Germatown, New York, she met Samuel Simmons. Though they weren't originally paired up, the two were destined for one another, and in 1948, they wed.
Settling in Germantown, Norma and Samuel raised a son and a daughter there together. While Samuel worked six days a week to support his family, Norma kept the kids in line and the house neat and tidy. While the kids were in school, she worked as a seamstress in one of Germantown's only factories: a manufacturer of women's brassieres. With great hours and lots of flexibility, Norma was able to work and manage her home as well, and in turn, gave her family a strong foundation.
Norma had a huge heart, and was driven to help those in need. She took on the care of several elderly relatives, friends and neighbors, who in succession moved into her home to be cared for by Norma at the end of their lives. Norma was gifted with patience and compassion, and never shied from doing the work for those who could no longer do for themselves.
Norma retired to Cedar Crest Village in Pompton Plains, and immediately enjoyed living in the busy community. She was invited to join a group of women for dinner on her very first day, and that group became her posse. She embraced the clubs, activities and socialization that the community provided, and was happy to live in such a wonderful community.
Norma was deeply loved, and was cared for by her children until the end of her life. She is lovingly survived by her daughter, Nancy J. Simmons and her husband, Leslie Christie, and her son, Samuel S. Simmons; by her grandchildren, Lily, Ahren, Grayson, and Cameron; and her great-grandchildren, Jameson, Eva, Alani and Aidan.
She was predeceased by her husband, Samuel S. Simmons; her daughter, Holly; her daughter-in-law, Melody Froehlich; and her brothers, Douglas and Frederick Ahrens.
A graveside service will be held at the Linlithgo Reformed Church of Livingston, NY, at a future date.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary typically includes the deceased person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include funeral service details, memorial contributions, and any other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

What if I'm unsure about what information to include in an obituary?
