Richard G. Baumgarten - October 19, 1937 - April 15, 2022

Departed: 04/15/2022 (Green Bay)
Obituary Preview: Richard “Dick” Baumgarten passed away on Good Friday, April 15, 2022, with his son, friends, and caregivers at his side, after living a full and loving life.
He was born on Oct. 10, 1937, in Loganville, WI, to Edwin and Lorna (Hasz) Baumgarten and enjoyed his childhood roaming freely around town with his older sister, Connie. His love of automobiles started at an early age, building soap box derby cars and racing them around Wisconsin, including the championship races in Madison. This is also when his love for the Cubs was solidified, traveling with Connie to Wrigley Field during the summer of 1947 at age 9 to see his favorite team play.
At Webb High School, Dick played football, basketball, and baseball. School wasn’t his favorite, but his humor, charm, and drive to succeed – plus a bit of a stubborn streak – served him well throughout his life. After attending college in La Crosse and Platteville, Dick served in the military from 1960 – 1962 and was awarded a Medal of Honor for conduct and a commendation for marksmanship.
Dick painted power poles, worked as a first responder, and at the movie theater in Reedsburg, to name a few jobs, before he found his calling in banking. He started his banking career in Loganville in the late 1950s, a path that would take him throughout southern Wisconsin before becoming the President of the Fox Heights Bank in 1966. Dick remained at the bank for 45 years, building lifelong friendships, community bonds, and enjoying every moment.
1966 was a truly important year for Dick – he met the love of his life, Hope (Overholt) Baumgarten (1944 – 2016), whom he married on July 16, 1966. Their beloved son, Kurt Richard Baumgarten, was born in 1967, after which they moved to Ashwaubenon, WI, where Dick promptly attended one of the great moments in Packers history – the Ice Bowl. Dick and Hope built their family home and life on Marhill Road, founding members of a loving community that thrives to this day.
The next years were spent enjoying a life packed full of joy – including work, travel, and quality time spent with friends and family. Memorable moments included weekends at the family cabin near Crivitz, watching the Cubs on WGN, playing golf and ping-pong with Kurt, hunting and fishing trips, planting and tending to his gardens, spoiling the family cats (Chelios and Tucker), and fighting the never-ending battle between the squirrels and the birdfeeders. Dick treasured his lifelong friendships with Gene, Gordie, Al, Binker, Jim, Bob, and many others.
Dick kept busy in his years after retirement. He devoted untold hours to one of his greatest joys in life – cultivating his gardens, which were featured on the 2012 Green Bay Botanical Garden’s Garden Walk, hosting visitors from around the Fox Valley. His yard is full of rare trees (including Dick’s prized Japanese Maple), flowers from his mother’s gardens that have bloomed for nearly a century, fruits and vegetables, and a koi pond full of lilies, all of which tell a story and inspire a sense of peace.
He and Hope wintered in Florida, driving down each year with Tucker the cat in the backseat and enjoying the warmth, sun, and friendships until spring brought them back to Wisconsin. They took      trips to Alaska and throughout the Northeast, enjoying friends, food, and nature. He particularly took pride in going to car shows in his 1954 Oldsmobile (his favorite car of all), talking shop with anyone and everyone.
One of Dick’s most striking characteristics was his generosity, as evidenced by his frequent donations to organizations such as the Green Bay Botanical Garden, the National Railroad Museum, and the Salvation Army. He sat on numerous philanthropic boards throughout his retirement and was passionate about his causes. Most importantly, his desire and drive to help others extended to his friends and family, all of whom knew they could rely on him for support in times of need.
The last several years of Dick’s life were not easy. Hope passed away in 2016 after a long fight against ovarian cancer, and soon after his own health declined. Still, he enjoyed visiting with friends, watching the Cubs and Packers, and being in his treasured home until he passed. A truly fond memory was a final trip to Wrigley in 2017 after the Cubs won the World Series with Kurt, Rachael, and his sister and her entire family in tow – 70 years after their first trip there. Most importantly, he deeply treasured weekends spent with Kurt, watching sports, history and animal shows, and simply spending quality time together. He loved his son very much.
We would like to particularly thank Binker and Tim, Jennifer and Wally, Maria and Jim, Sara and Phil, Kortney, Mike, and the Marhill community for their incredible support and love throughout the years. Dick is survived by his son, Kurt and his partner, Rachael Cooper; sister, Connie Kramer; and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church in Ashwaubenon (2700 Babcock Rd.) on Saturday, April 30 at 10 AM. A service will be held at noon, immediately followed by a reception and luncheon celebrating Dick's life. Graveside military funeral honors will be paid at Woodlawn Cemetery (1542 Webster Ave) following the luncheon.

Steven J. Jacobs - November 11, 1968 - March 04, 2022

Departed: 03/04/2022 (Green Bay)
Obituary Preview: Steven James Jacobs passed away peacefully on March 4th, 2022, surrounded by his loving family and in his favorite place, home.
Steve was born on November 11th, 1968, to his loving parents Larry and Patricia Jacobs and raised in Green Bay alongside three siblings. As a child he excelled at many sports, with a particular talent for baseball and football. In addition to always remaining active in those and other sports, his fondest childhood memories included spending weekends at the family cabin, trout, and bass fishing, and exploring the north woods.
Steve graduated from Ashwaubenon High School in 1987, then went on to college at UW- Whitewater graduating with a degree in Business in 1991. He ran a successful insurance agency for over 20 years, priding himself on the service and relationships he built with his many long-standing clients.
He married the love of his life Kari (Dittloff) on July 30th, 1994. They were adventurous in the first couple years of marriage, living in Savannah, GA and Columbia, SC before moving back to Green Bay to start entirely new adventures raising their boys closer to family and friends.
Steve’s boys (Logan, Nathan, Luke, and Evan) meant everything to him. He would choose listening to their playful bantering at the kitchen table over a tropical vacation any day. Steve’s first and main interest was always his family and spending time with Kari and the boys.
Steve was an avid reader, grill master extraordinaire, fisherman, golfer and supporter of anything and everything that the boys were involved in. Steve loved being a baseball coach and dedicated countless hours to the Ashwaubenon baseball program, finding great joy in the inclusion and advancement of his players and celebrating their achievements big and small.
Steve’s quick wit, sense of humor, and general perspective and observations on life (think Seinfeld) were among his most memorable traits and produced stories that will be told for years to come.
Steve heroically battled cancer to remain a beloved part of his family and to continue adding to his legacy as a father, husband, brother, son, and friend to many.  Most people never knew the challenges he took on.  It was his extreme determination and grit that allowed him to keep life as normal as possible for his family. Everything he did was for them. The way he confronted and battled his illness was truly inspirational.
He is survived by and will live on in his beloved wife Kari, his sons: Logan, Nathan, Luke, and Evan; parents: Larry and Patricia Jacobs; siblings: Sheryl (Felicia), Greg (Anne) and Neil (Jennifer); nieces; in-laws: Richard and Jackie Dittloff; brothers-in-law: Mark and David; sister-in-law Deanna; other relatives and many friends.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process. The author should have a good understanding of the person's life, personality, and accomplishments to create a fitting tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise yet meaningful, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. You may need to provide the written obituary, along with any photos or other materials, via email or online portal.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. However, it's essential to keep in mind that the final version may need to be edited or revised by others after your passing.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the notice. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options, while traditional newspapers may charge by the word or line.

What is an online obituary?

An online obituary is a digital version of a traditional printed obituary. It's typically hosted on a website or social media platform and can include additional features such as guestbooks, photo galleries, and donation links.

How long do online obituaries stay online?
