Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the funeral arrangements and other details. They also help to notify people who may not have been aware of the person's passing.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include funeral service details and charitable donation information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Traditional newspaper obituaries are often limited to 200-300 words, while online obituaries can be longer and more detailed.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload photos of the deceased. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the obituary and celebrate the person's life.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for the publication.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce the death, you can opt for a private or family-only obituary. This can be arranged through the funeral home or online platform.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

How do I find an old obituary?
