Obituary Preview: Wladyslawa “Lottie” Nerek Wasilewicz , 96, of Hamden died peacefully at her home on April 11, 2024. She was the wife of the late Vincent Wasilewicz. Lottie was born in New Haven December 23, 1927, a daughter of the late Stanley and Anna Gromala Nerek and was a secretary for the Hamden Board of Education for many years. Walking the trails of local parks was always a source of enjoyment for Lottie. She loved cooking and baking with her family for holiday gatherings and sharing time with her grandchildren, for which many will be eternally grateful. An aspiration since youth was to become a nurse and was never achieved, but in her later years, Lottie served those in need as a nurse’s aide. She will be greatly missed by all who love her. She is the mother of Elizabeth Jakiela, Katherine (George) Libby, Mary Wasilewicz, Dorothy (Steve) Vitello, Thomas and Martin Wasilewicz and the late Anne Inzero. Grandmother of Jennifer (Rob), Juliet (Vincent), George, Anna (Patrick), Michelle, Vincent “Teddy” and Thomas. Great-grandmother of Alexa, David, Olivia, Sofia, Vincent and Frances Rey. She was predeceased by her brother Thaddeus Nerek.

Obituary Preview: Florence Gajewski Szeligowski, 100, of Carmel Road in Bethany passed away peacefully April 2, 2024 at home. She was the beloved wife of the late Vincent Szeligowski. Florence was born in New Haven April 25, 1923, a daughter of the late Apolonia Adamski Gajewski and W. George Gajewski and resided in Bethany for 60 years. She is the mother of Richard Szeligowski and his wife Anne, Robert Szeligowski and his wife Marie and Raymond Szeligowski and his wife Micki. Grandmother of Richard Jr., Michael, Kathryn, Steven, Amanda, Vincent, Jonathan and David. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters Helen Turner and Mary Szeligowski, her brother Frank Gajewski and her stepmother Pauline Gajewski.
Florence was employed at AC Gilbert for 8 years as a train tester and at Oil Equipment Co. for 10 years as a bookkeeper prior to retiring in 1980. She was a member of the New Haven Council of Catholic Women, a member and past officer of the Columbiettes, Father Kavanaugh Council #7124, Southern Connecticut Ancestry Network (SCAN) Genealogical Society of CT (PGSCTNE), The Derby and Prospect Senior Centers and the Bethany Library Association.

Obituary Preview: Victoria A. Lupinski Adams,100, of North Branford, formerly of New Haven and Hamden, died March 23, 2024, at Evergreen Woods Health Center. Victoria was born in New Haven on August 13, 1923, the youngest daughter of Alexander and Stanislawa Lapeusz Lupinski. Predeceased by her husband William E. Adams, The Gold Life Master and Certified Director of the American Contract Bridge League. During the whole duration of WWII, Victoria was employed as a telegrapher at The Western Union Telegraph Co., and left when Japan surrendered. She retired from the accounting department of The United States Steel Corporation. Vicky and Bill were avid whole world travelers. Two and a third times around the world plus other trips on The Cunard Liner, Queen Elizabeth II, in addition to smaller ships and different destinations. In the U.S. they visited every state except Oregon and Michigan. They traveled by land and sea, no airplanes. Victoria continued traveling on Queen Mary II, logging 498 days with Cunard. She is survived by several nieces and nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her sisters and brother; Mae (Stanley) Zygmundowicz, Lillian (Elmer) Edwards, R.N., Francis J. (Esther) Lupinski, Josephine (Walter) Gwardyak, Sophie Lupinski and Helen (James Jr.) Barry.
The family wishes to thank Josina Raulins and also the Team at the Evergreen Woods Health Center for the compassionate care they provided.
Visiting hours will be Monday, April 8, from 9:30 to 10:30am in the Lupinski Funeral Home, Inc., 821 State Street, New Haven. Ted was born in New Haven, March 11, 1924, a son of the late Alexander and Gladys Sobolewski Gniazdowski. A child of The Depression, he began working at the age of 8 selling newspapers and shining shoes at York and Broadway. An Army Veteran, he served his country proudly during World War II as a cook. He was employed by M & B Aircraft, New Haven Pulp & Board, First Federal Bank Maintenance, and retired from Bilco Cellar Door. He also worked as an independent landscaper. He is the father of William (Linda) Gniazdowski and Thomas G. (late Lee) Garrett . Grandfather of Luke (Jennifer) Gniazdowski and Drew (Shannon) Gniazdowski. He is also survived by 5 great-grandchildren who were his vitamins. He was predeceased by his siblings Harriet, Henry and Stanley. The family wishes to extend its heartfelt thanks to The Veterans Administration, West Haven, CT for their exceptional care through the years and to Connecticut Hospice in Branford for his last days.

Obituary Preview: Patricia King Zane of North Branford CT entered into eternal rest on February 22, 2024. She was the high school sweetheart and wife of 65 years of John Zane. Mother of Kenneth J. Zane (Jillmary) of Cheshire and Christopher J. Zane (Kathleen) of Guilford; and grandmother of Ashley, Ian, Gregory, Charlie, and Oliver Zane. She was the sister of Stephen David King (Anne) of Exeter, NH. Born March 4, 1937, daughter of the late Stephen and Nora Cosgrove King, she was raised in New Haven, graduating from St. Boniface School (’50) and St. Mary’s High School (’54). Following high school, she was employed by SNET while attending comptometer school. Upon completion of the program, she was recruited to a position in the office of the Auditor of Disbursement at The New Haven Railroad. She resigned from the Railroad to raise her sons but maintained her interest and skills by volunteering her services to the East Haven schools as bookkeeper, financial secretary, and treasurer for the PTAs and the EH High School Band Parents’ Association. In the early 1980s she earned her licenses as a Realtor and Real Estate Broker but delayed her entry into the profession in order work with son, Christopher in the establishment of Zane’s Cycle and Zane’s Inc. She served as the corporate president for five years before resuming her interest in real estate with The W. T. Beazley Company and later with Coldwell Banker/Coast & Country. She was a member of the Cub Scout Pack 412 Committee while her husband
and sons were active members of the unit. From 1972 to 1989 she was an avid square dancer with the Guilford Shoreliners SDC, serving as president with her husband for three of those 17 years. More recently, she enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s athletic events. For all her activities and accomplishments, she might be best quietly remembered for her pro-bono assistance to many friends and acquaintances as a highly experienced Real Estate Broker during difficult times.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, March 1st at 11am in St. Stanislaus Church-Blessed Michael McGivney Parish, 9 Eld Street, New Haven. Obituary Preview: Beatrice R. Hahn, 102, of North Haven passed away on Saturday, February 11, 2024. She was the wife of the late Charles W. Hahn. Bea was born in New Haven November 23, 1921, a daughter of the late Stanley and Sophie Stanczak Ciak and was a graduate of the former Boardman Trade and Stone College schools. She worked in accounting and clerical functions at Winchester Repeating, stockbrokerages, S&H Green Stamps, and CT Savings Bank and also worked as a caterer with her sisters for a number of years. Survivors include her sons Russell C., William C. and Richard C. Hahn. She was predeceased by brothers Stanley and Theodore Ciak, and her sisters Helen Butler, Janina (Jane) Lorence, Frances Fletcher and Sophie Wunderlee. She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren, friends and neighbors many of whom were instrumental in helping her to live at home until a few days ago. Her close friend and niece Beverly Booze of Hamden was key in this effort. Bea maintained large flower and vegetable gardens, canning and freezing provisions for her family and won numerous ribbons in the North Haven Fair especially for her dill pickles and sauerkraut. As a neighbor once said, “when you walk into Bea’s kitchen, she makes you feel as if you are the most important person in the world”. She was a member of the Taddeus Koszcziuszko Society, a Cub Scout Den Mother, world traveler, astute Pinochle player, unbeatable at Scrabble, a prolific knitter and crocheter and seldom was without an active crossword puzzle.

Obituary Preview: Charles “Chuck” Anthony Cheslock, Sr., 79, of New Haven passed away suddenly on October 30, 2023. Born on November 5, 1943, he was just a few days shy of celebrating his 80th birthday.
Chuck was a lifelong entrepreneur, owning multiple businesses throughout his lifetime, The Boulevard Flea Market was among his most notable ventures. Chuck always had a deep love for the sea and enjoyed boating, fishing, and taking many trips to Costa Rica to go sport fishing. He was known for his wild and adventurous spirit and could be found taking a drive in his Slingshot in the warm summer months. Some of his simple pleasures in life included savoring a glass of blackberry brandy, a lively game of Yahtzee with those he held dear, and enjoying the companionship of his beloved cat, Mouse.
Chuck is survived by his devoted sons, Charles “Tim” Anthony Cheslock, Jr. and his wife Mary, as well as Carl Cheslock and his wife Jenna. His legacy lives on through his cherished grandchildren Chelsea, Madi, Alanna, Morgan, Kaitlyn, Gavin and Sara. In addition to his sons, Chuck is survived by his sisters Evelyne Cheslock, Cynthia Caliendo, Eileen Heinig, and her husband Walter, and his Sister-in-Law Frances Cheslock. He was predeceased by his son Gregory Cheslock and brother Michael “Ches” Edward Cheslock, Jr.
In memory of Chuck, we celebrate a life lived with love, adventure, and unyielding generosity. May he rest in peace, his spirit forever sailing on the waves of our fondest memories.

She enjoyed traveling with her husband and family, trips to the casino, listening to music, completing puzzles, Christmas trees. But her greatest love was being with family. She was predeceased by her siblings; Mary Coloski and Helen, Sophie, Walter, Michael, Stanley and John Swiatek. She is survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Douglas Andrew Taylor - May 14, 1959 - September 22, 2023

Obituary Preview: Douglas A. Taylor, 64, passed away on the morning of September 22, 2023 with his beloved Anna holding his hand.
Douglas was born to Frank and Mary (Nemergut) Taylor, their third son and fourth child, on May 14,1959. He grew up in and around the Stratford area for most of his life. He was an avid fisherman when he wasn’t working and enjoyed NASCAR racing. After graduating from the University of Bridgeport, he entered the area of Security. He stayed in this field until having to retire last year due to health concerns. After a brief sojourn to New Hampshire to care for his aging parents, he and Anna returned to the Branford area to be closer to family.
Doug was predeceased by his parents, his brother Curtis (2021) and Michael (1985). He is survived by the love of his life, Anna Zielinska, his daughter Alyssa and son-in-law Robert Muller, his sister-in-law Nancy Taylor, his sister, Gail Rossi and husband Carl, his nephew Stephen Rossi and wife Patti, his niece Erin Mena and husband Randall, two great nephews Giorgio and Mateo Mena, and Anna’s extended family.
The family wishes to extend their thanks to the ICU at Milford Hospital for their extraordinary care and compassion these last few days.

Robert S. Frew - March 02, 1940 - September 22, 2023

Obituary Preview: Robert S. Frew, of New Haven passed away peacefully September 22, 2023 in Yale New Haven Hospital. He is the beloved husband of Susan Hatch Frew. Born in a tiny village of 200 people, Chapelton, Scotland on March 2, 1940, son of the late James G. Frew, a blacksmith and Hannah Morrow Simpson Frew, a weaver. He was born from loving simple beginnings, where creativity took place on the kitchen table. He was a graduate of The Mackintosh School of Architecture, 1963, B.Arch Manitoba School of Architecture,1965, M.A.S.C. Engineering, University of Waterloo 1967, PhD. Engineering, University of Waterloo,1973.
While at the University of Waterloo, he was part of building the Kaliedoscope Pavillion at the 1967 World's Fair. Professionally, Robert, an Architect, was known for the renaissance of State Street in New Haven. He was President of Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven, served on the Board of Aldermen. He was also a Scottish Dancer and helped formed and taught the New Haven Branch of Royal Country Scottish Dancers, and he also was part of the Beginning of Schooner, one of his and New Havens Favorite Organizations.
Bob taught at the Yale School of Architecture from 1969-1999, In the 1970's Bob made significant programming contributions to the early developments of Computer Aided Design. At the Yale School of Architecture he established the Computer lab, with applications that have now influenced every aspect of architectural design and construction.
Bob Frew and Bob Workman were the FOUNDERS of the Computer Science Department at Southern Connecticut State University, Both Bobs were professors, and Bob Frew was the Department Chairman (1981-84) of Computer Science at Southern Connecticut State University, he taught from 1978-2003.
Bob is survived by his wife, Susan, his children Ian Frew (Dawn), Susannah Frew Dameron (Philip), grandchildren Zachary and Madeleine Frew and James Robert Dameron and great granddaughter Adriana Frew. Predeceased by siblings Hannah Frew Paterson and James Frew.
In most recent years Bob was a member of Baldwin Yacht Club (virtual as well as social), and a Member of the Property Committee at First Presbyterian Church.

She is also survived by her friend Barb Skomro. Sandy was predeceased by her Brothers Miroslaw ”Muggzy” and Peter Pietraszuk.

Jeanne Wiatrowski - January 20, 1929 - August 24, 2023

Obituary Preview: Jeanne Austin Wiatrowski, 94, passed away peacefully August 24, 2023. Active and healthy for most of her life, she faced her illness with grace and resilience. Jean was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Frank Wiatowski. She is survived by her son William “Bill” Wiatowski and her daughter Catherine “Cathy” Ahern and her partner Marilyn Mather. Jean was predeceased by her brother Samuel R. Austin and her infant daughter Susan. Born in Meriden, CT, Jeanne spent most of her life in New Haven. Much of that time was on Bishop Street with Frank, Bill, Cathy and her parents, the late Roland and Mabel Austin. For 35 years Jeanne was a crossing guard for the New Haven school system. On her busy State Street corner, she directed many school children, learned all their names and quirks, and eventually even assisted some of their children. She knew the neighborhood well and helped out at a local breakfast spot, also a good way to warm up on those winter days. Jeanne was friends with everyone that she would meet, both in New Haven and later at their condo in Hamden where she was on the condominium board for many years. When she decided to move to Atria Assisted Living in Hamden, she also made many friends, participated and even led as many activities as possible and was an “Ambassador” welcoming new residents. Jeanne also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Her family is grateful for her final months at the Guilford House. There she enjoyed meals in the dining room, participated as she was able in activities and enjoyed the sunshine of the lovely courtyard.

Obituary Preview: Robert J. Markowski, 86, of East Haven, passed away peacefully August 7, 2023, in the West Haven VA Medical Center. He was the husband of Dorothy “Dolly” Mead Markowski. Father of Robert G. (Carol Evancovitch) Markowski, John J. (Debbie) Markowski and Steven M. (Marina) Markowski. Grandfather of John and Joe Markowski.
Bob was born in New Haven Connecticut, the only child of Julius & Elizabeth (Kaczynski) Markowski on September 20th, 1936. He attended St. Stanislaus School in New Haven and continued his education at Boardman Trade High School as an apprentice tool and die maker. Working in this trade for only a short time, Bob enrolled into the United States Navy and served aboard the Destroyer Escort USS Greenwood 679 stationed in Green Cove Springs Florida. During this time, his parents decided to move from Connecticut to Florida where his father Julius joined a construction crew as a master carpenter building new homes in the Opa-Locka Florida area. With a year left in the Navy, he was introduced to the love of his life Dorothy (Dolly) Mead. They married on September 7th, 1957, in St. Augustine Cathedral, St. Augustine Florida.
Upon discharge, Bob and Dolly along with his parents decided to return to Connecticut, where Bob and his father started Markowski & Son Builders in 1958. They constructed single-family homes in New Haven County, largely in East Haven. Bob remained active in the business and worked alongside his son John until the age of 86. His reputation was stellar as he gave customers uncompromising value at a fair price and an unconditional never-ending guarantee.
In his spare time, Bob began taking flying lessons out of Bethany Airport from 1963 to 1965. He received his private pilot’s license in 1966, and shortly after bought a Cessna 172 for weekend excursions to Block Island, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and trips down south. He achieved a commercial light plane rating and after that started on an IFR rating. Later, he purchased a Cessna Cardinal 177 RG. Bob was Vice President and later President of the Connecticut Aircraft Pilots Association at Tweed New Haven Airport. He was also a member of the Civil Air Patrol, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and the Experimental Aircraft Association.
Another passion of Bob’s was his love for antique cars and trucks. His 1957 Corvette won several Topflight Awards given by the NCRS (National Corvette Restorers Society) and he was a very early member of the Society. He enjoyed participating with the local chapter, judging the C1 1953-1962 Corvettes.
Outside of his many hobbies, Bob was passionate and understanding of everyday life encounters. He was a role model not only for his family and friends but for everyone whom he shared a relationship with; a true gentleman of kindness and love – he certainly will be missed immensely.

Rob was an avid Red Sox and Phish Fan, a gifted saxophone player and a lover of dogs. He was a great carpenter, a jack of all trades and one of the most authentic, genuine people you could ever meet. He is the brother of Marta (James) Royer, Piotr Ziolo and the late Konrad Jan Ziolo. Uncle of Ava and Waylon Royer. He is survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins and his very special gaggle of hens; Tobie Schuerfeld, Ellen Roy, Michelle Riley and Beth Cowperthwaite.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday evening from 4 to 7pm in the Lupinski Funeral Home, Inc., 821 State Street, New Haven. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday morning in Blessed Michael McGivney Parish at St. Stanislaus Church at 10. Burial will be private. All the patients loved her, she was always easy to talk to and very compassionate. Anne enjoyed gardening in her free time as well as cooking and traveling. She and her closest friend Marion had many girl trip adventures together which she cherished dearly. She was also an animal lover and advocate. Anne was predeceased by her father Vincent and uncle Ted. She leaves behind her daughter Michelle, her significant other Sal, her mother Lottie, her 6 siblings; Elizabeth, Katherine(George), Mary, Dorothy(Steve), Thomas and Martin. Janet was predeceased by her beloved sister Alfreda Burblis.

He told tales of working on fishing boats out of Gloucester, MA and couldn’t wait to share fruit and vegetables from his garden. Paul’s greatest passion was spending time with his late wife Gracie. It was nothing for them to drive to Cape Cod or to Rhode Island for lunch. Paul leaves his beloved cat Bootsy.

He is survived by a son Richard E. Muthersbaugh Sr., a grandson Richard Muthersbaugh Jr., great grandchildren Jessica Correa and Teela Brewer and great-great grandchildren Salvador Correa Jr., Andrea Correa, Jayden Brewer, and Damien Brewer. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Bob was predeceased by a son Robert A. Muthersbaugh Jr., sisters Ruth Moran and Mary Bedford, a brother James E. Muthersbaugh, sisters-in-law Lydia “Betty” Bolash and Anna Bolash, and a grandson Robert A. Muthersbaugh III. Known as Bob or Buck, he graduated from Central High School in Bridgeport in 1939 and proudly served his country during WWII in France, Germany, and Czechoslovakia for 3 ½ years in the 3rd Army in the 12th and 16th Armored Infantry Division. He was a high speed International Morse Code Radio Operator. His vehicle was the first one into Pilzen, Czechoslovakia, when they were liberated from the Germans. Bob was awarded medals for Good Conduct, the American Campaign, the European-African-Middle East Campaign, WWII Victory Medal, Army of Occupation with Germany Clasp, Honorable Service Lapel Button, Soldiers’ Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and the Bronze Star. He worked for Railway Express Agency for 27 years, then for several area trucking companies as an account executive. Bob was President of the Bridgeport Traffic Association in 1979-1980. He was also a member of the New Haven Traffic Club, Norwalk and Stamford Traffic Club, Danbury Traffic Club, Quarter Century Traffic Club and Yellow Dogs’ Traffic Club of Meriden. After retiring, he went to work in security for Yale University Sterling Memorial Library and Cross Campus Library where students taught him a few words in 22 languages, finally retiring once again in 1998. Bob was a proud and active member of the Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Church in New Haven for over 60 years and served on the Church council, was past President of the CT Russian Orthodox Laymen’s League, and the Ladies’ and Men’s Auxiliary. He was named parishioner of the year in 1977. Bob was a goodwill ambassador and personally welcomed new faces in church as well as new families on his street. He had a great sense of humor and always had a joke to tell and a little magic for children in church. Pursuing their shared hobby of bird watching, Bob and Vera had over 40 flowering trees and shrubs, loaded with bird feeders and even a heated bird bath. Avid ballroom dancers, they were members of several local dance clubs.
