James D. Smith - December 22, 1935 - December 18, 2020

Departed: 12/18/2020 (Vinita)
Obituary Preview: James D. Smith 12/22/35 – 12/18/20
After a hard-fought battle with cancer, James “Jim” D. Smith of Vinita, OK, peacefully transitioned to heaven at his home on December 18, 2020, at the age of 84, four days from his 85th birthday.  His family was in his presence at the time he went to be with the Lord.
Jim was born December 22, 1935, in Strang, OK, to James Martin Smith and Sue Gale (Trout) Smith, who predeceased him. He grew up in a large family in Big Cabin, OK, with 2 sisters and 4 brothers.  Two brothers, Tony Smith and Keith (Bud) Smith predeceased him.
He leaves behind 4 siblings, Geta Gatterman of Albuquerque, NM, Zane Douglas Smith (Dottie), of Gallup, NM, Gayle Vanatta of Vinita, OK, and Phil (Linda) Smith of Jenks, OK, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who spent their childhood around Uncle Jim and Aunt Violet.
After graduating from Big Cabin, he joined the Air Force from 1954-1958 and was stationed many places, including California, Washington state, and the Philippines, which he talked about often. He then returned to the Vinita area and worked for the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority before taking a position at Eastern State Hospital. It was during this time he met, Violet Mae Vanover at the California Café on old Route 66 and they were married on January 7, 1963.  Both worked at Eastern State Hospital until their respective retirements and made their home in Vinita, OK. They were married 40 years, until her death on September 29, 2003.
Jim and Violet adopted, with much love, discipline and patience, 3 children, Carla Pruden (Robert) of Bentonville, AR, Lisa Washam (Brian) of Vinita, OK, and Scott Smith of Vinita, OK. He is also survived by his 2 grandchildren, Brian Washam II of Hattiesburg, MS and Jessie Washam of Norman, OK, whom he loved very much and was blessed to be around their entire lives.
Jim was an electrician by trade, but retired as the Maintenance Superintendent at Eastern State Hospital in December 1997, with many fond memories and jokes with former co-workers and employees. He was on the Vinita City Council and a Deacon at Family Praise Center in Vinita, which he and Violet began attending in 1977.  He was a strong Christian man who loved the Lord and remained a member of Family Praise until his death.
Jim was a kind man who had a great smile and sense of humor, but could definitely be hard headed, he loved all sports and enjoyed coaching his children in their youth activities.  He loved watching his beloved St. Louis Cardinals and reading the newspaper every day, and was always in the market for a new vehicle, as Green Country Ford knows. Jim was also a songwriter and even during his last months, he would ask us to take down a few lines.   He had a profound knowledge of country music and could tell you who wrote almost any song recorded before 1975.  He loved watching his RFD country music shows and would not be happy if something interfered.  And he loved watching western movies or TV shows, always pointing out who an actor was or asking did we recognize someone.  He loved southern food, especially crappie and catfish, fried chicken, biscuits and gravy, and the occasional stop at Long John Silvers.  Our family had many wonderful occasions to get together throughout the years and always with an overabundance of food, but he didn’t want us to leave him leftovers.  Dad, you may be gone, but will never be forgotten.

Martin Bennett Kay - August 24, 1946 - December 15, 2020

Departed: 12/15/2020 (Vinita)
Obituary Preview: Martin Bennett Kay, “Marty B” was born on August 24, 1946 in Vinita, OK to Bennett & Dixie Kay. He was born on South Scraper while his Dad was seating visitors at the Vinita Rodeo. He passed away on December 15, 2020 at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, OK with both of his daughters nearby. Marty was the father to Staci Kay of Vinita and Traci Langley of Claremore. He was also known as “Pops” to his first grandson, Skilar Miller, of Stillwater as well as Coleman and Kayci Langley of Claremore. He was an ornery brother to Glydene McDonald of Ponca City who preceded him in death and Benna Bivins, living in Claremore. He was also preceded in death by both parents.
Growing up, Marty B. was an avid hunter of all animals and he loved to fish at Grand Lake. He especially loved to catch Crappie! He always told fond stories of hunting with his Dad and his Uncle Dick Walker, plus many others throughout the years. He even made the Vinita Daily Journal as a youngster when he killed 2 rabbits with 1 shot! (Yes, there were witnesses) Marty also had a way of connecting with wild animals and often made them into pets.
Marty graduated from Vinita High School where he was active with FFA. He had lots of great, longtime friends from High School along with his friends from Trinity Baptist Church. All through his life, Marty continued these friendships and remained in contact with many. Just a few special friends we know to mention are: Kody Miller, Jimbo & Pam Shellenbarger, Barbara Jean and Bunny Meyers. He often talked about missing his friends that had already passed on as well as the old-timers. We know he has rejoined them now and is enjoying catching up and telling stories. Marty B. was a great storyteller and could always spin a good tale! He was always so smart and up-to-date on the daily news and current events. He loved to watch sports, especially football, hunting and boxing. He also did his best to catch live wrestling matches, baseball, soccer, kart-racing, and basketball games when his grandkids were playing. He was one of their biggest fans. Not only was Marty B. generous with his grandkids, but he also supported many diferent charities. Many of you have probably received fresh fruit or goodies in the mail from him over the years as well.
In 1965, Marty joined the US Air Force and spent the next 4 years serving. He was a proud Vietnam Veteran who believed deeply in honoring Veterans. His daughters, Staci and Traci, are asking that donations, in his honor, be sent to The Foundation for Exceptional Warriors instead of flowers for the family. When asked who had the biggest influence over his life, Marty replied, “U.S. Postal Service and the U.S. Government.” He also spent 17 years working at the U.S. Post Office in Vinita. Many people in the town of Vinita have fond memories of Marty B. delivering their mail.
Honoring Marty’s wishes, there will not be an official funeral. Condolences may be left at www.honoringmemories.com or our Luginbuel Facebook page. Marty’s final resting spot will be in the Kay family plot at the McLaughlin Cemetery in Cleora, OK. www.exceptionalwarriors.org The Foundation for Exceptional Warriors PO Box 356 Bixby, OK 74008

Leonard Albert Dalquest - December 11, 1932 - October 13, 2020

Departed: 10/13/2020 (Vinita)
Obituary Preview: Len Dalquest, native of Vinita, OK passed away on Tuesday October 13 at his home on Grand Lake with wife Nancy and family by his side. Below is a summary of his life in his own words My Life
One of the disadvantages of getting old is that you get to attend a lot of funerals. Inevitably at these ceremonies, the deceased person seems to always turns into a Saint. At times I wondered whether I was at the right funeral.
So, for the record...... I am not a Saint....far from it. I had my good side and my not so good side....and I have to admit I can be a royal pain at times... Here is what I am most proud of:
1. Growing up in Vinita. and the Grand Lake area.
2. Having four children that have blessed us with 13 wonderful grandchildren and 8 active great grandkids. 3. Always being there for my parents as they got older 3. Having the opportunity to see the world and its diversity during my 30+ years with GE 4. Making successful EMS services happen in Craig and Delaware county
5 Being a supportive husband to Nancy as she moved up the executive ladder and then launched her own company.
6. Being an OU fan- -- GO SOONERS. Here is what I could have done better 1.Been more patient and spent more quality time with my kids as they were growing up 2. Been more patient of others - especially Nancy's type A girlfriends 3.. Say Thank you and I love you more often So, I leave you with these last words of wisdom: Go into this week with the attitude that your peace, your health of mind, and your heart mean more than getting everything else done. That your smile matters, That feeling rested matters. That holding the hand of your loved one’s matter. So, pause lots, function at a pace that doesn’t pull you apart. Honor the things that make you feel good inside, the things that make you feel alive. Give time to those things this week. Make time the gift it is, by giving it to what really matters to you. — S.C. Lourie of Butterflies and Pebbles
I've had a good life.......thank you for sharing yours with me and remember to tell those close to you that you love them. Len
Nancy and the family would like to thank the following people for their compassionate care of Len: caregiver Savannah Chuckluck and Pat Haire, the Home Stay Assisted Care team of Tammie, Emily, Olivia and Tiffany and Carter Hospice nurse Sherry Reisman and aide Alliene Thompson. In addition, Nancy would like to thank her family and the numerous friends that have supported her over the past 29 months, including the Vinita Rotarians who made Wednesdays special for Len.
Len's final resting place will in the Dalquest Family Plot at the Vinita Cemetery. A graveside service will be held at a later date when out of state family members can travel safely.

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a way for loved ones to pay their respects.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process. The writer should be someone who knew the person well and can provide an accurate and meaningful tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), and surviving family members. It may also include hobbies, interests, achievements, and other personal details that help to tell their story.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or memorial websites.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's possible to write your own obituary in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, changes cannot be made to an obituary once it's been published in a newspaper. Online platforms may allow for edits or corrections within a certain timeframe.

When writing an obituary, aim for honesty without being hurtful or insensitive. Focus on celebrating the person's life and accomplishments while avoiding potentially divisive or controversial topics.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's personality or spirit.

What if I'm unsure about what type of information to include in an obitary?
