Departed: 05/15/2024 (Lubbock)
Obituary Preview: Fernando Louis Gonzales passed away after nearly six years of battling cancer on May 15, 2024. Despite tremendous physical pain, he fought to remain with his beloved family for every moment until the very end. His devoted wife of 47 years, Oralia Gonzales was at his side. Known to many as "Louie" or "F.L.", Gonzales was born October 29, 1954, in Slaton, Texas, to Fernando R. Gonzales and Herminia Gonzales. He excelled in music at Slaton High School, graduating in 1972 and earning a scholarship from Texas Tech University to continue his musical training as a Tuba player in the marching band. In order to support his family, he left university early to seek work, eventually joining the Santa Fe Railway as a locomotive engineer, a position he continued for nearly 36 years. A steadfast member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, Louie always encouraged his younger colleagues to learn about the protections and rights afforded by union solidarity.
A man of extraordinary faith, Gonzales embodied an ethos of deeds over words and could always be counted on to serve his community. He was an encouraging friend to the downtrodden and a champion of the underdog. After years of volunteering with the Scouts and other civic organizations, Louie was proud to serve as a Chair of the Stewardship Committee of Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

Houston Elder - August 12, 1928 - May 15, 2024

Departed: 05/15/2024 (Lubbock)
Obituary Preview: Houston McDonald Elder, age 95, a respected member of his community, beloved family man, and faithful servant of God, passed away surrounded by his family on May 15, 2024, in Lubbock, Texas. Born on August 12, 1928, in Seagraves, Texas, Houston was the second of six children to McDonald and Mary Ophelia Crocker Elder, growing up alongside his siblings Dwayne Alfred, Wendell, John, Ella Mae, and Mary Alice. Despite a challenging bout with scarlet fever at six, he grew up to be resilient, raising hogs, playing football, and excelling academically before graduating from Seagraves High School in 1946.
In 1948, life brought Doris Gressett into his world. Their first date, marked by a memorable sandstorm, led to a lifetime of love. They married on February 14, 1950, in Plainview, TX. Together, they embarked on a remarkable journey, building a life centered around faith, family, and community that would last 72 years.
Houston's career with the United States Postal Service began in Seagraves at the age of 17 and led him to Crane in 1951, where the Elders’ family grew with the births of Susan Ann, Beverly Kay, and Houston McDonald Jr.
Houston and Doris became integral members of Crane’s community. Houston was not only known for his role as Assistant Postmaster but also for his unwavering service as a volunteer firefighter, a deacon, and a Sunday School teacher at the First Baptist Church of Crane. His tireless work on numerous church committees, his leadership in building projects, and his participation in mission trips underscored his commitment to serving both his community and God.
In 1977, Houston's journey took a new turn when he and his family moved to Kermit, Texas, continuing his career with the USPS serving as the Supervisor of Postal Operations. Beyond his professional duties and numerous hobbies, Houston and Doris immersed themselves in the life of the Kermit First Baptist Church, contributing their time and talents to various church activities.
After retiring in 1983, Houston put his carpentry skills to use and over 8 years built his and Doris’s dream home in Fort Davis, Texas. Even in retirement, Houston remained active in the community. In the Davis Mountains Resort Baptist Church, he did everything from preach to janitorial duties, while also resuming his work as a volunteer fire fighter.
In 2007, Houston and Doris moved to Lubbock. They joined Calvary Baptist Church where Houston served as a deacon until 2012, when he felt it was time to turn it over to the younger men. However, he continued to enjoy his Tuesday morning coffee and always found an occasion to climb a ladder to do repairs around the church. In 2019 Houston had a minor stroke but fully recovered and was home in two weeks doing yard work. Unfortunately, Doris went to be with the Lord shortly after celebrating their 72nd wedding anniversary in 2022.
Houston has reunited in heaven with his beloved wife, Doris, his parents, two sisters, and two brothers. A true Man of God, Houston leaves behind a legacy cherished by his brother John, daughters Susan Ann and Beverly Kay (Mike Pharaoh), son Houston Jr., five grandchildren, James Houston, Robert Wayne, Stefanie Michelle (Tye Graham), Karis D’Ann (Brandon Henry), and Rachel Renee, seven great-grandchildren, Ella, Kamber, JJ, Brasher, Sofia, Chase, and Michael, and a multitude of nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Cal Farley's Boys Ranch or Wounded Warriors, in Houston's memory, continuing his lifelong commitment to service and community.
Houston McDonald Elder's story does not end here; it lives on in the hearts of those he loved, the communities he served, and the profound impact he had on the countless lives he touched. “God has kept His word. Your children, by no means perfect, have not departed from His ways. We sometimes stumble and even fall, but we fall on the foundation of God, that you have so diligently and responsibly helped build with your teaching but mostly by your example. Your children call you blessed. Thank you.” - Donny Elder

Everly Blake Havens - December 17, 2020 - May 06, 2024

Departed: 05/06/2024 (Lubbock)
Obituary Preview: Everly Blake Havens. An absolute gift. The light of a lifetime. Everly was full of life and joy. She was fun and funny and loved to laugh. Evy delighted in the simplest things - bubbles, buckles, microwaves, babies, chips and dip-dip, and making her sister, Jaidyn, laugh. In fact, most days she could be found following Jaidyn around, a cup of goldfish in hand, on the prowl for a new accessory to add to her person.
Evy was the sweetest giver of love. She shared her light and life in the most out-of-this-world way. She hugged big, laughed big, smiled big, sang big, and loved so big. Evy was brave. She was resilient. Her life was the glory and goodness of God on full display. He was lifted high in her waving “HI” at every stranger and He was lifted high in every kiss she gave her dad. He was lifted high in her “wheels on the bus” songs and in her aggressively helpful nature with friends.
She is cherished deeply, held in the most beautiful of memories - giggling and twirling, loved beyond measure by everyone who was lucky enough to know her.
The name Everly means “a life of purpose.” Our human plans could never have known the way Evy’s life would glorify the name of Jesus and have purpose far beyond our understanding.
She is survived by her sister Jaidyn Havens, parents, Andrew and Jaimie Havens, her grandparents David and Carrie Hayslip and Warren and Stacy Havens, and by her aunts and uncles - Hallie, Camille, Chris, Cyle, Kit, Evan, Kelsey, Jordan, Erica, Manda, Sam, Morgan, Caleb, Summer, Matt, Lauren, CJ, Maddie, Regan, Allanah, Jack, Kiana, and Ben; as well as cousins - Dawson, Caden, Kolie, Scout, Salem, Beau, Charleigh, Zeke, Ellie, Abigail, Levi, Foster, Laney, Maggie, Calloway, Zyler, Owen, Nora, Witney; and countless others who love her.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased. Funeral homes or obituary writers may also assist in writing the obituary, especially if the family needs guidance or support during this difficult time.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. You may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, such as the date, time, location, and any specific requests or instructions.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Traditional newspaper obituaries are usually shorter, ranging from 100 to 200 words. Online obituaries can be longer, often up to 500 words or more, allowing for a more detailed and personal tribute to the deceased.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload photos of the deceased. This can be a wonderful way to personalize the obituary and share memories with others. Some publications may have specific guidelines or restrictions on photo submissions.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for the publication fee. Some newspapers may also have online submission forms or partner with funeral homes to facilitate the process.

Can I write my own obituary?

Absolutely! Many people choose to write their own obituary as a way to reflect on their life and leave a lasting legacy. This can be a therapeutic exercise in self-reflection and a unique opportunity to share your story with others.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement that simply states the person's name, age, date of death, and funeral service information. It's often used when a more detailed obituary is not desired or when time is limited.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the notice. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $500 or more for a traditional newspaper obituary. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

It depends on the publication or platform. Some may allow minor corrections or updates, while others may not make changes once the obituary has been published. Be sure to review your submission carefully before publication.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online platforms may publish immediately or within a few hours, while traditional newspapers may take several days or even weeks.

Can I request corrections or changes to an existing obituary?

If you find errors or inaccuracies in an existing obituary, contact the publication or platform directly to request corrections. They will typically make every effort to update the notice promptly.

What is a guest book or condolence message?

A guest book or condolence message is a digital space where friends and family can leave messages of sympathy, share memories, and offer support to the grieving family. These messages are often attached to the online obituary.

Can I plan my own memorial service?

How do I cope with grief after losing a loved one?

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

This depends on the publication or platform's policies. Some may allow republication on anniversaries or special occasions, while others may not permit re-publication at all.

How do I preserve my loved one's memory after they're gone?

There are many ways to preserve your loved one's memory, such as creating a memory book, planting a tree or garden, making a donation in their name, or establishing a scholarship fund. Find what resonates with you and your family as you navigate your grief journey.

Is it appropriate to share funny stories or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber; sharing humorous stories or anecdotes can help celebrate your loved one's personality and spirit.
