Edward George Groenhout - October 11, 1936 - January 25, 2022

Departed: 01/25/2022 (Flagstaff)
Obituary Preview: Edward George Groenhout, 85, of Flagstaff, Arizona, passed away January 25, 2022, at home with his family and with the support of Northern Arizona Hospice.
Ed was born October 11, 1936, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Richard and Johanna Boersma Groenhout. The eldest of three boys, Ed enjoyed fishing and hunting with his father and brothers, helping his uncle deliver fresh milk to neighbors, playing baseball, and singing tenor in the church choir.  After high school, Ed set his sights on pitching in minor league baseball, but it wasn’t to be, so he joined the US Air Force and boarded a bus for a base in Cut Bank, Montana. After four years of service, including two years in Japan, it was in this small western town that he fell for a raven-haired, blue-eyed beauty named Shirley Foster. Ed and Shirley eloped to Coeur D’Alene, Idaho, in August 1959.
After working as a radio station manager, a picture framer, and five years as a police officer, Ed and Shirl, with two children in tow, moved to Missoula where Ed enrolled at the University of Montana in 1964 with the help of the GI Bill. As an undergraduate, he was elected to Phi Eta Sigma national freshman honor society, Phi Kappa Phi national scholastic honorary, and Sigma Delta Pi National Spanish honor society.
A leader in student government, Ed was instrumental in organizing the commissioner form of government and served as the first U of M fine arts commissioner. He was also chairman of the dean’s fine arts advisory council.
After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with high honors, Ed worked as a teaching assistant in the U of M Fine Arts Department while pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree, awarded in June of 1967. He was also the 1967 recipient of the Phi Kappa Phi Outstanding Scholar Award.
In 1969, at the age of 33, Ed was appointed executive director of the Montana Arts Council (MAC), an agency created to stimulate Montana’s cultural development and to administer matching funds for that purpose from the National Endowment for the Arts.  Before leaving Missoula, Ed was commissioned by the student government of Sentinel High School to paint “The Spartan,” a 9 x 4.5-foot oil painting that is on display in the school’s lobby to this day.
In 1971, Ed, Shirley, and their three children moved to Bozeman where Ed became the assistant dean of the College of Arts and Architecture at Montana State University.  During his nearly 20-year tenure at MSU as assistant dean and then dean, Ed was instrumental in growing the School of Architecture, the department of film and television, and KUSM, the school’s public television station. In 1979, he was commissioned to sculpt a bust of Anna Pearl Sherrick, the founding director of MSU’s baccalaureate and master’s degree programs in nursing. The bust remains in place outside the nursing department, Sherrick Hall, as a tribute to her work.
While in Bozeman, Ed joined the Karl Mark’s Cardinals, an over-30 slow-pitch softball team. The friendships he made through this organization were some of the richest and most enduring of his life.
In 1988, the Groenhouts moved to Flagstaff, Arizona, where Ed took on the role of dean of the College of Creative and Communication Arts at Northern Arizona University. Over time, Ed became vice president of strategic initiatives and was pivotal in the development of NAU-net, a satellite and microwave television network program offering the first courses in Arizona to off-campus sites via television. Additionally, it pioneered offering a foreign language program to elementary students throughout the U.S., lower Canada, and upper Mexico.
After stepping down from university administration in 2001, for several years Ed taught color theory and charcoal classes at NAU, which were also broadcast through the distance learning program he helped create.  Upon retirement, Ed bought a small boat and delighted in fishing and camping with his grandchildren, Noah and Sofie, at Lake Powell until a pneumonia event in 2012 left him dependent on oxygen 24/7.
Ed loved watching his grandchildren play sports, the Michigan Wolverines, Roger Federer, and Snickers bars. He continued to create art until just a few months before his passing.
Ed leaves behind his wife of 63 years, Shirley Foster Groenhout; brother William (Carol); children Lori Jo (Marvin) Eleazer, Edward Guy (Yvonne), Brenda (Chris) Linskey, and five grandchildren: Jonna Jerdee, Jacob Jerdee, Joel Jerdee, Noah Linskey, Sofie Linskey, and a handful of great grandchildren.
Given the pandemic, a memorial service will be held in Flagstaff during warmer weather.

John Frederick Dalby - April 04, 1950 - December 31, 2021

Departed: 12/31/2021 (Flagstaff)
Obituary Preview: John F. Dalby, 71, passed away unexpectedly on December 31, 2021 at his home.  He was born in Albuquerque, NM on April 4, 1950.  John is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Karyn (Dalby) Reid and Gary Reid of Durango; and their sister-in-law, Charmaine Dalby, of Albuquerque.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Dalby and Arlene (Premer) Dalby; and his brother, Michael Dalby.
John and his family lived in the same house from the late ‘50s to 1971. He and his siblings spent most of their time outside and shared many good memories of growing up on a short section of their street where it seemed that every child was named John, Karen, Mike or Linda. Boy Scouts played an important part in John’s formative years, and many of his closest friends were part of that organization.  He earned his Eagle Scout award in 1967and graduated from Del Norte High School in 1968.
John attended UNM as a Navy ROTC student and a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, graduating in 1972 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering.  He served in the US Navy from 1972 – 1980 and then worked in the defense industry in Southern California.  While there, John continued his education earning an MS in Systems Management in 1981 and a Professional Certification in Systems Engineering in 1994 from USC and UCSD respectively.
Following the decline in that industry in the 90’s, he moved to Flagstaff to be near his sister and brother-in-law and closer to the rest of his family in Albuquerque.  After working for a while as a substitute teacher, he was hired by ADOT and worked as a Transportation Engineering Specialist for 20 years until his retirement in 2015.
During his early years in Flagstaff John enjoyed hikes on the mountain trails, backpacking, mountain bike rides, and cross-country ski outings with family and/or friends.  He and his brother-in-law spent many days fishing at Lee’s Ferry.  Later, he enjoyed fishing at Lake Mary either on his own or with friends.  John enjoyed shooting and became a Range Safety Officer at the Northern Arizona Shooting Range after retiring.
John’s family remembers him as a loving and giving person with a quick sense of humor and many wisecracks.  He shopped specials and was tight with his money, but he enjoyed giving to his church, to needy families at Christmas, a local teacher’s classroom, orphans in Mexico, emergency relief agencies, St. Jude Hospital, Wounded Warriors, and other charities.  A close neighbor described him as a true friend, an honest man, and helpful neighbor. Although we teased him about being the “favorite child”, John and his siblings loved one another deeply, and they often got together to celebrate the close relationship that they maintained throughout their lives.
A funeral mass is scheduled for 10:30 am at San Francisco de Asis Catholic Church in Flagstaff, 1600 E Rte 66, Flagstaff, AZ, on Friday, January 28, 2022.  Due to COVID concerns, the family requests that those who choose to attend wear a mask.  Interment will follow at 12:30 at Arizona Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery at Camp Navajo near Bellemont, AZ.

Marion S Lopez - April 25, 1943 - December 28, 2021

Departed: 12/28/2021 (Flagstaff)
Obituary Preview: Marion “Mimi” passed away on December 28, 2021.
Mimi was born in Hollywood, California and grew up on an 18-acre prune farm in Gilroy, California. Her father died when she was young, leaving Mimi and her mother, Mathilde (Mommike), to tend the newly purchased farm for about a decade and a half by themselves. Later, Mimi and Mommike moved to a much smaller 2-acre property in San Martin, which they planted with an apricot orchard.
Mimi completed her bachelor's degree in Food Service Management at San Jose State University and her master's degree in Dietetics at the University of Milwaukee. She had a successful career as a dietitian for Stanford University Food Services where she met her husband, John Pat. When Mimi and John Pat were first married, they lived in Palo Alto. They moved to Gilroy in 1976, where they had their daughter, Jessica, three years later. Then in 1986, the family moved to Los Gatos. In 1995 Mimi, John Pat, and Jessica left California and moved to their dream home in Flagstaff, Arizona where Mimi turned her attention to gardening and quilt making.
Mimi was always sewing, cooking, or working in the garden. While participating in the Gilroy 4H when she was young, Mimi won ribbons at the County Fair for her sewing projects. She was always making her own clothes, especially for special occasions. We will all miss being recipients of so many of her creative endeavors, including her handmade quilts and delicious meals.
Mimi loved to garden. She did things with care and excellence after studying how to do it correctly. Mimi achieved the formal status of Master Gardener while living in Flagstaff. She had always worked with plants, as her mother did, whose parents had been florists and flower growers. Mimi made an art of it.
Mimi leaves her husband John Pat, her daughter Jessica, son-in-law David, and grandson Wyatt, as well as many friends and family members. We will miss being the recipients of her handmade gifts and occasional twinkle-eyed teasing, the unmistakable sound of her laughter, and beautiful smile.
Please join us for a celebration of Marion’s life on Sunday, May 15, 2022, at the Gardens at Viola’s, located at 610 Highway 89A in Flagstaff, beginning at 1pm and ending at 4pm.
The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to The Ark Cat Sanctuary (https://www.arkcatsanctuary.org/the-ark/) in Marion’s name.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify others of the person's passing, allowing them to attend funeral services, send condolences, and share memories.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about funeral services, memorial contributions, and other relevant information.

Who writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary often falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. Funeral homes or obituary writers can also assist with crafting an obituary if needed.

How long does it take to write an obituary?

The time it takes to write an obituary can vary depending on the complexity and length of the notice. On average, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours to craft a well-written obituary.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, you can write your own obituary! In fact, many people choose to do so as a way to reflect on their life and legacy. This approach can also help reduce the burden on loved ones during a difficult time.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, typically including only essential information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides a more detailed account of the person's life and accomplishments.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Some newspapers and online obituary sites offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge a fee based on the length or prominence of the notice.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or multiple photos with the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the notice and celebrate the person's life.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

You can usually submit an obituary to a newspaper by emailing or faxing the text and any accompanying photos to their obituary department. Be sure to follow their specific guidelines and deadlines for submission.

What is an online obituary?

An online obituary is a digital version of a traditional print obituary. It's published on websites or social media platforms, allowing friends and family to share condolences, memories, and tributes with ease.

Are online obituaries permanent?

Most online obituaries remain available for viewing indefinitely, providing a lasting tribute to the deceased. However, some platforms may have limitations or restrictions on how long they will keep the notice active.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's possible to make corrections or updates to an obituary after it's been published. However, this may depend on the publication or platform's policies and procedures.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or websites that specialize in storing historical records. Many libraries also maintain archives of local newspapers that can be searched in person or through interlibrary loan programs.

Can I use an obituary as a eulogy?

What is the purpose of an obituary in genealogical research?

Obituaries can be valuable resources for genealogists, providing information about ancestors' lives, relationships, and migrations. They can also help researchers identify previously unknown relatives or connect with distant family members.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be an effective way to celebrate someone's personality and spirit. Just be sure to consider the tone and audience when incorporating humor into the notice.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice mistakes in an obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately. They will typically correct the error and republish the revised notice as soon as possible.

Can I reprint an obituary from another source?

You may need permission from the original publisher or copyright holder to reprint an obituary. Be sure to check their policies before sharing or republishing someone else's work.

What is the role of social media in sharing obituaries?

Social media platforms have become increasingly important for sharing news of someone's passing and connecting with others who want to pay their respects. Many funeral homes and online obituary sites now offer tools for easily sharing notices on popular social media channels.

How do I write a condolence message in response to an obituary?

A sincere condolence message should express sympathy for the family's loss and acknowledge their pain. Keep your message brief, heartfelt, and respectful – avoid clichés or generic phrases whenever possible.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes! Many families prefer memorial donations over traditional flowers as a way to honor their loved one's memory. Be sure to specify the charity or organization receiving donations in the obituary.

What is the significance of publishing an obituary in multiple languages?

Publishing an obituary in multiple languages can help reach a broader audience and ensure that all who knew the deceased are informed of their passing – particularly important for individuals with international connections or multilingual communities.

Can I create a video tribute instead of a written obituary?

Yes! Video tributes are becoming increasingly popular as a way to celebrate someone's life through images, music, and storytelling. You can share these videos on social media, funeral home websites, or dedicated memorial pages.

How do I preserve an online obituary for future generations?

You can save online obituaries by printing them out or saving them as PDFs. Additionally, consider creating a physical scrapbook or memory book with copies of the notice and other mementos from the funeral service.
