Ronald LeRoy Lawyer - February 13, 1943 - February 14, 2022

Departed: 02/14/2022 (Windsor)
Obituary Preview: Ronald LeRoy Lawyer, 79, of Stewardson, Illinois passed away on Monday, February 14, 2022, in HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.
Ron was born on February 13, 1943, in Charleston, to John Albert and Ella Mae (Howard) Lawyer.  He attended grade school in Charleston, Mattoon and Gays and graduated from Windsor High School in 1961.  He met and fell in love with Ellen May Cole (Jo) when she was 13 and he was 15.  It was “love at first sight” and she was his high school sweetheart and they married on January 17, 1965.
Ron attended Eastern Illinois University from 1961-1962 and worked as a management trainee for Montgomery Ward in Mattoon until he was drafted into the United States Army in September 1966.  He completed a 12-month tour of duty in Vietnam from March 1967-March 1968 and was recognized for his heroic service during the North Vietnamese and Vietcong Tet Offensive attack on the Long Binh base camp in January 1968.  He returned home in April of 1968 to reunite with his wife Jo and saw his 4 ½ month old daughter, Lesa, for the first time.
The army assigned him to Fort Sill, Oklahoma and he took Jo and Lesa with him to Lawton, Oklahoma.  He was honorably discharged at Fort Sill in September 1968.  After the Army, Ron decided to go back to school and worked on the night shift at Anaconda-American Brass Company in Mattoon but after the birth of Ron and Jo’s first son, Lance, in October 1970 he got a job in January 1971 working in the construction field office for one of the largest construction companies in the United States at that time, S.J. Groves and Sons Construction.  He worked for “Groves” for 21 years.  Their second son, Larry, was born in January 1974 when they lived in Chester.
Ron enjoyed the challenge of his work and was very good at what he did.  He was very proud of his children and grandchildren because they all share that same attribute.  They are all very good at what they have chosen to do in their lives.  Because of the nature of his work, Ron and his family moved a lot, living in Illinois, Missouri, Mississippi and Maryland.
Ron was very competitive in everything he did.  He enjoyed bowling, playing pool and won several individual and team trophies over the years.  Ron owned several old cars and enjoyed working on them but usually had to sell them when he had to move to a new construction project.  When you saw Ron, you did not have to look very far, Jo was usually close behind.  It was like that since their early days in high school.  Ron and Jo enjoyed time together and taking care of their family which was one of the most important things for them.
Jo passed away in April 2013.  Ron and Jo attended church as often as they could in the cities in which they resided during the 48 years of their marriage.  They both believed they would meet again in Heaven after their life was through on this earth.  Ron was not ashamed to say that he cried himself to sleep every night, missing his “Jo” for the remainder of his life.
After being widowed for eight years, Ron connected with Carole on social media.  After talking with each other, they realized that they went to the same junior high school in Mattoon.  They were both given a second chance with love and married in July 2021.
Ron is survived by his wife, Carole Lawyer of Stewardson; daughter, Lesa (Bobby Barker) of Granite City; sons:  Lance (Crystal) Lawyer of Olmsted and Larry (Dina) of La Vale, Maryland; grandchildren:  Joel Sims (Teagan), Alesha Sims (Zach Gaddie), Garrett Lawyer, Nathan Lawyer, Makayla Lawyer and Andrew Hawley; great-grandchildren:  Korah and Kali Sims, Adelina and Alexander Hawley and Everett Gaddie; brothers:  John (Cheryl) Lawyer and Perry (Jeanie) Lawyer; sister, Brenda (Harold) Burwell; sister-in-law, Nancy (Lee) Metcalf; stepchildren:  Lori (Steve) Ludwig and Tim (Wendy) Waldhoff and numerous step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ellen (Jo); stillborn brother, Steven Earl Lawyer and granddaughter, Cohren Hawley.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 20, 2022, in Lovins-Lockart Funeral Home in Windsor with Pastor Dave Dolan officiating.  Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service.  Burial will take place in Windsor Cemetery with military rites by the Garrett-Baldridge American Legion Post #725 of Windsor.  Memorials may be made to the donor’s favorite charity and mailed to Lovins-Lockart Funeral Home, 207 N. Oak, Windsor, IL 61957.  Lovins-Lockart Funeral Home in Windsor is assisting the family.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often used to share information about the deceased with family, friends, and community members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need it. They can help notify people of the passing, share details about funeral services, and offer a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or crematorium may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template to help guide the process.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), and surviving family members. You may also choose to include hobbies, interests, achievements, or other personal details that celebrate the person's life.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform where it will be published. Generally, it's best to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. Aim for around 100-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes! Many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to add a personal touch and help readers visualize the person being remembered.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Contact the publication or platform directly to learn their specific submission guidelines and deadlines. Some may accept submissions via email or online forms, while others may require you to visit their office in person.

Is there a cost associated with publishing an obituary?

Yes, there may be a fee associated with publishing an obituary in a newspaper or online platform. The cost varies depending on the publication, word count, and any additional features like photos or special layouts.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Absolutely! Writing your own obituary can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. Just be sure to store it safely and make sure your loved ones know where to find it when the time comes.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. It's often used in situations where a full obituary isn't necessary or feasible.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing someone's death and sharing biographical information. A eulogy, on the other hand, is a speech or written tribute that celebrates the person's life and legacy, often delivered at a funeral or memorial service.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, poems, or lyrics that resonate with the deceased's personality or spirit can add depth and meaning to the obituary. Just be sure to keep them concise and relevant.

How do I handle errors or corrections in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately to request corrections. Be prepared to provide proof of the error and suggested corrections.

Can I republish an obituary from another source?

You may need permission from the original publisher or author to republish an obituary. Be sure to check copyright laws and obtain necessary permissions before sharing someone else's work.

What is a living obituary?

A living obituary is a self-written tribute that celebrates one's life while they're still alive. It can be a unique way to reflect on accomplishments and share gratitude with loved ones.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes! You can specify if donations should be made in lieu of flowers or suggest specific charities or memorial funds that were important to the deceased.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

Triple-check facts like dates, names, and spellings to ensure accuracy. You may also want to have multiple people review the draft before submitting it for publication.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for many years?

Absolutely! Even if someone passed away years ago, you can still write an obituary as a way to honor their memory and share their story with others.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who was young or died suddenly?

Yes. When writing an obituary for someone who died young or suddenly, it's essential to be sensitive to the grieving family and focus on celebrating their life rather than dwelling on the circumstances of their passing.

Can I include humor or lighthearted anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a wonderful way to capture someone's personality and spirit. Just be sure to use good judgment and avoid anything that might offend or upset readers.

What is the purpose of publishing an obituary online?

Publishing an obituary online makes it easily accessible to a wider audience, allowing friends and family who may not have access to local newspapers to learn about the passing and pay their respects.

How long do online obituaries remain available?

The duration varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep archives indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period. Be sure to check with the specific platform for their policies.

Can I create a memorial website or page in addition to publishing an obituary?

Absolutely! Memorial websites or pages can serve as a digital gathering place for loved ones to share memories, photos, and condolences. They can remain active for years to come as a lasting tribute.

What resources are available to help me write an obituary?

You can find templates and guides online, consult with funeral homes or crematoriums, or seek assistance from professional writers specializing in obituaries. Don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it!
