Anthony R. Cirelli - August 28, 1943 - March 08, 2024

Departed: 03/08/2024 (Philadelphia)
Obituary Preview: ANTHONY RAYMOND CIRELLI “Tony”, age 80, US Navy Veteran, passed away peacefully at his home on March 8, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Devoted husband to Rose (nee Polo). Loving father to Carla Cirelli Mueller (Dennis), Anthony M. Cirelli (Michelle), and Dante Cirelli. Beloved grandfather to Madeline, Lucio, Gianna and Nina. Dear brother to Dante Cirelli (Mary) and Charlie Cirelli (the late Denise).
Anthony was born in the Lawncrest section of Philadelphia to the late Dante and Mary A. Cirelli (nee Villane). Anthony attended St. Williams Parish Grade School followed by Cardinal Dougherty High School. He served in the United States Navy from 1961 to 1964. He was stationed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He was employed by the US Postal Service, a job he truly enjoyed. Upon retirement, Anthony worked at Estee Lauder for twenty-two years and made many friends while there. He was an avid gardener and he was known for his famous tomatoes and basil. He loved to be among friends & family enjoying a nice Italian meal – braciole was his favorite along with a “Grey Goose” Martini. He loved life and found joy in the small things. He loved coaching and playing baseball with his sons. His love of the New York Yankees was legendary. The Yankees just lost their biggest and most loyal fan. He also had a passion for the Broad Street Bullies - aka the Philadelphia Flyers - and could name the entire 1974/1975 lineup and has every piece of memorabilia around those wins. His other love was everything Navy – including an intense love of Naval aviation and airshows. After the release of the movie Top Gun, Anthony could recite each line – and did so on many occasions. His favorite line, “Tower, this is Ghost Rider requesting a flyby. Negative, Ghost Rider the pattern is full.”
Among all things the one thing that was most important to Anthony was his family. He was so proud of his family and loved to talk and share their life with his friends and those around him. Anthony found joy in the simple things – fresh garden tomatoes, a good meal and listening to music. Comfort was found in his love for his Bride, Rose, and his faith. He had a wonderful sense of humor up to the end. He was proud to be a veteran and loved to talk and hear about his grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing Thursday, March 14, 2024, from 9:15AM until 11:15AM at Louis A. DiGiacomo Funeral Home, Inc., 1055 Southampton Road, Philadelphia, PA 19116, followed by his Funeral Mass at 12:00PM at St. Christopher Church, 13301 Proctor Road, Philadelphia, PA 19116. Vittoria Gallina - February 29, 1932 - February 01, 2024

Departed: 02/01/2024 (Philadelphia)
Obituary Preview: VITTORIA GALLINA (nee Romano), age 91, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2024. Devoted wife to the late Giovanni Gallina. Loving mother to Nicoletta “Nikki” DiSandro (Cosimo) and Bernice Wright (late Robert). Beloved grandmother to Giovanni DiSandro (Deborah), A. Tina DiSandro Castiglia (Bruno), Frank DiSandro (Lauren), Joseph DiSandro (Debra), Angela Long (Vince) and Robert Wright (Lauren). Adored great-grandmother to Samantha, Giovanni, Cristiana, Domenic, Joseph, Gianluca, Nicolas, Julia, Anthony, Victoria, Franco, Martina, Sabrina & Thomas. She was the daughter of the late Domenico Romano and late Berenice DiCredico and the cherished sister of Giuseppe (Graziella) and Rosaria Carafa (late Nicolino). She was also loved dearly by her nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Vittorina was born on February 29, 1932, in Montecilfone, Molise, Italy. She was born into a modest and hard-working family often surrounded by her siblings, cousins and paesani growing up together. She fondly remembers her parents and also her grandparents, Giuseppe Romano & Vittoria Mammoli and Paolo DiCredico & Rosaria Mezzanotte teaching her the values, traditions and language of their Arberesche roots. Reminiscing, Vittorina often spoke of happy memories of going to eat at her grandmothers’ and was often excited to choose a fabric for a new dress. Then, fate would have she and her family endure unimaginable circumstances of WWII hitting her town. Surviving such, had made she and her family keep their faith and grow stronger as they rebuilt their lives. She soon met and was engaged to her Love, Giovanni and she awaited him as he worked several years in Buenos Aires, Argentina for their future. They married on February 14, 1955 in their hometown and he soon headed to the United States to continue to work for their family to be. Their first daughter, Nicoletta, was born and Vittorina awaited 2.5 years before she could make the voyage to the U.S. to be reunited with her husband. She often recalled the memory of her father having accompanied her to the port of Naples and remembering that emotional and difficult moment when from his arms, he had to give his small granddaughter to Vittorina and say their goodbyes as Vittorina and Nicoletta boarded the ship for their voyage to the U.S.
Vittorina and her small daughter arrived in Philadelphia in 1958 and were reunited with her husband. She became a part of a beautiful immigrant community of Our Lady of Pompeii Catholic Church where she met many friends who helped each other, worked together and grew their families together. She was known as a kind and altruistic woman to many and Vittorina succeeded as a seamstress often working extra shifts and dedicating herself to the prosperity of her family together with Giovanni, a hard-working mason. In 1962, their family would be complete with the birth of their daughter, Bernice. They created beautiful memories together and she always supported and encouraged her daughters. Soon after, Vittorina and Giovanni became loving grandparents to their 6 grandchildren. Both are remembered so often as teaching strong work ethic, while the grandkids helped their Nonno cut the grass or helped their Nonna make so many of her traditional and delicious sweets and her loved lasagna in brodo passed down from generations past. Vittorina often had her family’s pants or a dress hanging near her sewing machine as she was always ready to help to pass down her great sewing skills.
Over her recent two decades, Vittorina loved and was adored by her 14 great-grandchildren each becoming her “favorite.” She shared beautiful memories with all of them and so many of her extended family enough to be an inspiration to all who met her. Vittorina will be remembered as a hard-working and dedicated woman who was kind, smart, supportive and altruistic. She blessed her family with decades of love, laughter, encouragement and wisdom while continuing her traditions leaving a legacy to last for generations.
Relatives & Friends are invited to her viewing on Saturday Morning, February 10, 2024, from 9:30am until 10:45am at St. Bede the Venerable Church, 1071 Holland Road, Holland, Pennsylvania, 18966. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in newspapers, online obituary platforms, or funeral home websites to share the news with friends, family, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify others of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process. The author should be someone who knew the person well and can provide an accurate and heartfelt tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), surviving family members, and any notable achievements or hobbies. You may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise yet meaningful, ranging from a few sentences to a short paragraph. Aim for 100-200 words at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload one or more photos of the deceased. This can help personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. Be prepared to provide the written obituary text, along with payment information (if applicable) and any necessary documentation.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary in a newspaper?

The cost varies depending on the newspaper and its circulation area. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for a basic listing. Some papers may offer package deals or discounts for longer notices.

Can I publish an obituary online for free?

Yes, there are several online platforms that allow you to publish an obituary at no cost. These may include funeral home websites, social media groups dedicated to obituaries, or online memorials like Legacy.com or Tributes.com.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline depends on the newspaper's schedule and deadlines. Online platforms usually publish immediately after submission. For print newspapers, expect a delay of 1-5 days before publication.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, changes cannot be made once an obituary is published in print. However, online platforms may allow you to make edits or corrections within a certain timeframe.

What if I need to correct an error in the obituary?

Contact the publication or platform where the obituary was published as soon as possible. They will guide you through their correction process and make any necessary changes.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes! Writing your own obituary can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told accurately. Consider sharing it with loved ones or storing it with your important documents.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers, genealogy websites like Ancestry.com, or visit local libraries with microfilm collections. Funeral homes may also keep records of past services and obituaries.

What is an "in memoriam" notice?

An "in memoriam" notice is a paid announcement that commemorates the anniversary of someone's passing or birthday. It's often used to honor loved ones who have passed away and keep their memory alive.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber; they can celebrate the person's personality, quirks, and accomplishments. Share stories that capture their spirit and make readers smile.

Should I include charitable donation information in an obituary?

If the deceased had a favorite charity or cause, consider including this information in the obituary. It allows friends and family to make donations in their name as a meaningful tribute.

Can I create a digital archive of my loved one's life?

Yes! Online platforms like digital legacy websites or social media groups allow you to collect memories, stories, and photos into a digital archive that can be shared with others.

How do I handle condolences from people I don't know well?

Acknowledge their kind words with a simple "thank you" or response expressing gratitude for their sympathy. You're not obligated to engage in lengthy conversations or respond individually to every message.

What if I'm overwhelmed by condolences and messages?

It's okay to set boundaries during this difficult time. Consider designating a point person to manage condolences on your behalf or taking breaks from social media and messaging apps.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

This depends on the original publication's policies. Check with them first before republishing elsewhere. Online platforms may allow republication without restrictions.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an LGBTQ+ inclusive obituary?

Yes! Be respectful of the person's gender identity, sexual orientation, and relationships when writing their obituary. Use their preferred names and pronouns, and acknowledge their partner(s) if applicable.

How do I ensure my loved one's legacy lives on?

Celebrate their life through storytelling, sharing memories, and continuing their passions or traditions. You can also establish a scholarship fund, plant trees in their honor, or create a memorial garden.

What resources are available for grieving families?

Bereavement support groups, counseling services, and online forums can provide emotional support during this difficult time. Reach out to local hospices, churches, or non-profit organizations for guidance.

Can I request corrections or updates to an existing online obituary?

Contact the platform where the obituary was published and provide detailed information about the errors or changes needed. They'll work with you to update the notice accordingly.
