Obituary Preview: Henry Arnold Wilson passed away peacefully on April 16, 2024, after a full and vibrant life of 96 years dedicated to family, church, and community service. Born April 8, 1928, the youngest of four children to the late Marcellus Wilson and Ophelia Reid Wilson in Dayton, Ohio, he is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Bernice Wideman Wilson, sister, Ida Mae Wilson, brothers Josephus Wilson, Clifton Eugene Wilson. He leaves behind a legacy through his loving and devoted wife of 17 years, Hazel Webster Wilson, daughter, Camille J. Cooper, son, Roderick B. Wilson, granddaughter, Dominique R. Jones, cousin Rev. Edward Wilson, the Websters and a host of other family friends.
Henry graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in 1945, earned a B.S. Degree from the Ohio State University in 1950, a Master of Arts Degree from Central Michigan University in 1977, and a Certificate of Mediation Training from Capital University Law and Graduate Center in 1992. Professionally, he dedicated 35 years at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base as a Statistical Draftsman, Mechanical Designer, Engineering Technician, and Chief Equal Employer Opportunity Counselor on the ASD Commanders Staff. After retirement, he was self-employed as an Employment Investigator doing business with the Defense Logistics Agency (1985-2003.) Concurrently, he was employed at Wright State University as a Staff/Faculty Mediator (1987-1996).
Henry’s commitment to faith was evident in his lifelong membership at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as Boy Scout Committee Chairman, Church School Teacher, Youth Church School Superintendent, General Church School Superintendent, Deacon, Pulpit Committee, Brotherhood President, and President of Springfield District Baptist Laymen. Beyond the church, he served on the first Board of Aullwood Audubon Farm & Center, Board Chairman of the West Dayton YMCA, Chapter President of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Past Sire Archon of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Board member of local Arthritis Foundation, the Hall Hunger Initiative, and past member of the Leadership Dayton Association.
A patron of the arts and advocate for cultural preservation, Henry supported the Dayton Foundation's African American Community Fund, Dayton Foundation Endowment benefiting Central State University, and was life member of the NAACP and a Charter Member of the Museum of African American History and Culture. His hobbies included traveling, woodworking, and yard work, which brought him great joy.

In May of 1980, Elner married John “Ricky” Reeves and to that union were four sons: Warren F. Burnam, Larry C. Burnam, Michael A. Burnam and Mickey Reeves.
Elner was a devoted member of Greater Allen A.M.E. Church, Dayton OH for over 30 years. Elner worked for General Motors for 27 years before retiring in 1995. She was an avid fisherman and enjoyed watching a good boxing match.
Elner was preceded in death by her husband, son, Larry C. Burnam; father and mother; brothers: Leslie /ray, William and James Burnam; sisters: Lillie Mae Graves, Estella Webb and her twin, Elmer (Fatso) Lewin.
She leaves to cherish her memory, three sons: Warren F. (Debra) Burnam of Tampa FL, Michael A. Burnam of St Pete FL, and Mickey (Katherine) Reeves of Dayton OH; brother-in-law, Leonard Webb of Dayton OH; 20 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and close friends.

Evelyn Taylor Young - November 27, 1929 - February 14, 2024

Obituary Preview: Evelyn Taylor Young was born November 27, 1929, in Laconia, Tennessee by a midwife and departed this earthly life on February 14, 2024.
She graduated from high school in Yellow Springs, Ohio. She started college at Howard University in Washington D.C. then transferred and graduated from Central State University in Wilberforce Ohio, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree.
She married Francis A. Young (Slim) on February 12, 1956 in Xenia OH, Out of this marriage came three children, Bonita, James & Lendell where she dedicated her life to raising her children. Evelyn’s love for her children and grandchildren was a source of joy and strength with immense pride delight and laughter.
She went on to teach grade school for Dayton Public schools for over 30 years. She was Executive Director for the West Dayton YWCA for many years. She worked for/with State Representative C.J. McLin to successfully bring about the West Dayton US 35 Corridor.
In her spare time, she loved gardening, playing cards including poker, Bid Whist, and bridge. She also was a member of the Penny Pinchers social club. She accepted Christ at an early age and was a long-standing member of Greater Allen A.M.E. Church for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis A. Young; mother, Lorene Keffer; grandparents, John & Mary Taylor; her sisters: Bobbi Jean Taylor and Christine Leroy; aunt & uncle, Oda Bell Artis & Earl Artis.
Her memory will be cherished by, her children: Bonita Jackson of Springfield IL; James E Young of Dayton OH/ Atlanta GA; Lendell (Rochelle) Young of Dayton OH; grandchildren, great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and special friend, Loretta Goodson.

Olivia Truitt Ewing - January 02, 1930 - January 24, 2024

Obituary Preview: Olivia Green Truitt Ewing was born to the union of Cato Benjamin and Lula Grier Green. To this union nineteen children were born. Olivia and twin brother Oliver were the sixteenth and seventeenth to be born, and Olivia was the youngest daughter. Olivia was born January 2, 1930 in Troup County, LaGrange, Georgia. She departed this life on January 24, 2024 surrounded by her loving family.
Olivia graduated from East Depot High School in LaGrange, Georgia in 1948. She later attended Cooke County School of Nursing, Chicago, Illinois and graduated with a licensed practical nursing degree in the early 1950’s. She moved to Dayton, Ohio in 1954 where she subsequently worked for Miami Valley Hospital. She retired from Miami Valley with over 29 years of dedicated service. Following employment at Miami Valley, Olivia worked at the Dayton Urban League for 7 years, and was a member of the Dayton Urban League Guild.
Throughout her life she proved to be hardworking, friendly, fun loving and selfless. She possessed the same traits that all of the Green siblings possessed: the ability to make you laugh, an eye-catching smile, friendliness, a caring posture, and the ability to sing. These traits were always exhibited when they got together for family reunions. Everybody had a funny story to tell. Further, Olivia was an excellent cook and loved sweets. Her baking specialty among many was sweet potato pie. It was quite common to have family and friends over for dinner and conversation. She also loved to play cards and dance.
One of Olivia’s favorite songs was “If I Can Help Somebody,” and that she truly did. Helping others was her mantra. She worked tirelessly helping others in need. Due to her community service efforts, in 1996 she was recognized by Mary Scott Nursing Center as a Mary Scott Legacy Award Honoree.
Olivia accepted Christ at an early age and joined McGhee Chapel AME Church in LaGrange, Georgia. Upon moving to Dayton, she joined Phillips Temple Church and remained a faithful member for over 65 years. It was at the church where she met special friends: Mary Hogan, Marva Burton, Zenobia Horton, Dorothy Dozier, and Bessie Jones. Her membership at Phillips Temple included serving on the Missionary Society, singing in the Senior-Templelite Choir and membership in the Church Aid Society. She was a faithful member of the Women’s Sunday School Class until her illness. In 2016 because of her many years of dedication to the Senior-Templelite Choir, she was recognized, along with other senior members of the choir, for her years of dedicated service and commitment.
She was preceded in death by eighteen siblings. Olivia leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Merlinda Truitt (Larry) Johnson and Charlene Truitt (Charles) Nelson, Jr; Grandson, Charles (Christina) Nelson, III –Chelsea, Alabama; Great Grandchildren, Alexandra Olivia Dania Nelson and Alijah Charles Nelson - Chelsea, Alabama; Twin Brother, Oliver (Annie Lucille) Greene – LaGrange, Georgia; Special niece, Ann Robinson, Dayton, Ohio; Lifelong Best Friend, Ruth Rembert - Dayton, Ohio and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Patsy is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 58 years, Carlton Rickman, Sr.; sons: Rev Carlton Rickman, Jr., and Rev Darrell (Alysia) Rickman; daughter, Karla Johnson; Sister Deborah Williams, nine grandchildren: Aleisha, Brittany, Christian, Nia, Mathew, Damian, Julius, Alaina and Delaina; two great grandchildren: Kennedy and Kree, a host of family and friends.

Elaine Y. Johnson - February 23, 1940 - October 27, 2023

Obituary Preview: Elaine Yvonne Barbour Johnson (Aunt Laine, Lainey, Sis Johnson) was born to Junius and Evon Westmoreland Barbour on February 23, 1940. She was one of 13 children borne to that union. Raised in Oakdale PA, Elaine graduated from West Allegheny High School, Class of 1957. She eventually would move to Dayton OH where she would meet and marry her beloved husband John B Johnson. They were united in marriage by Rev Dr. Charles Holmes on February 14, 1987. She lovingly raised 4 girls including: Leanne Henry (Keno), Uhuru Johnson (Brio), Keisha Thigpen (Jamal), and Dawntay Miles. She was Nana to 17 grandchildren: Kene’ and Keona, Charles IV, Keashaun, Jameisha, Janay, Maximus, Laurin, Destiny, Damarion, Deamir, Ramatah, and Tanaya. She was Grand-Nana to 4: Jayden, Silas, Au’Mari, and Savion. Because of her profound love for all children, she was influential in countless other lives in her family, her church, and her community. She had a presence that was unmatched and wisdom beyond our own.
Known as Sister Johnson, Elaine was one of the original members of Christ Our Redeemer African Methodist Episcopal Church, where she has been committed for over 40 years. In these years she has served as president of the Steward Board, Sunday School Superintendent, choir member, and member of the Women’s Missionary Society. She proudly and tirelessly served her family, her church and her community in full capacity. When she wasn’t serving others, she enjoyed painting, gardening (with all of her “garden friends”), playing her piano, and spending quality time with her family. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her including her family, her church, and her friends.
She is survived by her Loving husband, John, her daughters: Leanne, Keisha, Uhuru, and Dawntay; her brothers: Kenneth and Roger; sister, Frances; countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends.

Eddie Lester Johnson - February 23, 1939 - October 05, 2023

Obituary Preview: Born Edward Luster Johnson by his mother but spelled as we know it by the midwife who delivered him. However, he was affectionately known as “Lester” by all. Eddie made his grand entrance into this world February 23rd, 1939 to Mr. Allen & Mrs. Nancy Johnson. He was born in the very small town of Mound Bayou, Mississippi “The Jewel of the Delta” where he attended Bolivar County Schools and worked vigorously in the fields to provide for his family & himself.
In his early 20’s he relocated to the big city of St. Louis, Missouri for greater work opportunities with Hussman refrigeration before moving to the Gem city of Dayton, Ohio where he would spend the right of his earthly life in 1970.
While working at Bonded service station & Central Oldsmobile, he met the love his life, Mary Ann Freeman in December of 1973. After nursing her from a terrible cold just 44 days later….February 9th, 1974 they were joined in holy matrimony. He served faithfully at United Missionary Baptist Church as a Deacon until he was introduced to the way of holiness on November 29, 1987 when he was baptized in Jesus Name & later filled with the Holyghost at Christ Temple Apostolic Faith Church under the leadership of Bishop Fred Majors.
In March of 1978 Lester underwent a back surgery in which his heart stopped for over 5 minutes. After doctors fought tirelessly to save his life, they told his family his chances of surviving through that night were slim to none. He was rendered a vegetable losing everything from his memory to his mobility. However, God had other plans. Over the course of 41 days, Lester became a living miracle and on May 11, 1978 he walked out of the hospital to go home with his family. God completely healed him & he would often tell the story teary eyed & full of praise.
He enjoyed worshiping with his wife & faithfully serving on the usher board for 35 years. He took pride in being a great father & grandfather to his children. He would spend his summers gardening growing fruits & vegetables for loved ones. A simple, humble, loving man full of wisdom who you could find tuned into Monday night wrestling every single week. He was known particularly for his unmatched kindness to any & everyone.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Johnson; brothers: Allen Jr, William Benny, Carl Everett, Milton Lee, and Ervin; sister, Cora Leatrice, and daughter, Cindy Freeman.
His life, love & legacy will be forever cherished by the Queen of his heart for nearly 50 years, Evangelist Mary Ann Johnson; children: Jerry Kent of Silver Springs, MD, Eric (Wanda) Johnson Sr., Darren Johnson, Marilyn Johnson all of St. Louis, MO, Shana Goins, Jamar Freeman, & Javier Freeman of Dayton, OH; 16 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren. 3 brothers: Pervis (Antoinette) Don, Joseph Johnson of Chicago, IL, Ronnie Johnson of Milwaukee, WI; 3 sisters: Shirley Jean Maxom of Chicago, IL, Marva Ann (Jim) of Milwaukee, WI, & Nita Toy of Mississippi; sister in laws: Middie Freeman & Ruby Kelly; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, neighbors and his beloved Church family.

Obituary Preview: MELVIN ROY WHITE was born into the union of Clifford and Cresma White on December 22, 1939. He was the seventh of twelve children, and attended public schools in Dayton, Ohio including Paul Laurence Dunbar High School.
Melvin was a proud entrepreneur who owned and operated Mel’s Appliances for over forty (40) years and was a staple within the Dayton Community. He loved spending time with his family and friends when he was not working. He enjoyed going to work and meeting new people. He would always reminisce with his family members and friends about the good, old and fun times during his lifetime.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five (5) sisters: Marlene Wilson, Jacqueline Carter, Gloria Watts, Ellen Collins and Mary McCray; two (2) brothers: Clifton White, Jr., and Gerald White; one (1) son, Jamel L. Miller.
He is survived by three (3) sons: Michael (Chelsea) Clay of Haymarket, Virginia, Paul Miller and Marland Miller both of Dayton, Ohio; seven (7) grandchildren; five (5) great-grandchildren; two (2) sisters: Ruth Glass and Patricia Reed; two (2) brothers: Paris White, and Rodney (Barbara) White all of Dayton, Ohio; a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and special friends: Tony Glasper, Ralph Jenkins, Jr. and Robert McCoy (Chandler).

Obituary Preview: Virgil H. Smith Jr., age 77, was born November 24, 1945, in Dayton Ohio to the late Virgil Sr. and Lena M. Smith. Virgil Jr. graduated from Roosevelt High School, Class of 1964. At an early age he discovered his love of music. Virgil was a member of Roosevelt’s Marching Band, fluent in saxophone, flute, and clarinet. Over the years Virgil played with the Imperials Band and various other groups around the city.
Virgil worked for the Inland division of General Motors. He also worked and retired from The Biltmore Towers in 2017.
Virgil was a quiet, kind, good-hearted man who loved his family. He was always ready to help in any way he could. Virgil helped to care for his dad during his last days, always dependable and willing to do anything he was asked to do.
Although Virgil Jr. was not an active church member at the time of his death, he accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and was a member of St. Luke Baptist Church in Dayton Ohio. When Virgil Sr. passed away, the only possession of his father’s he requested was his bible. Further confirmation that Virgil Jr. knew and accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior.
Virgil Jr. is preceded in death by his parents, Virgil Smith Sr. and Lena M. Smith, and his brother, Jack H. Smith.
Virgil leaves to cherish his memory, a loving sister Joyce (Smith) Roberts and brother Derrick (Staycee) Smith of Dayton Ohio. There were many challenges to being a single parent to 3 teenagers, but she loved her children, and wanted to see them become happy and successful.
Damika was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Beatrice Manns and Thomas McCain; paternal grandparents, Edward T. and Eva Mae Bailey; sister, Daquita McCain Greathouse; aunts: Ruby McClennon and Renee Macauter; uncles: Warren McCain, Lacey Bradley, Howard, Duane and Brian Bailey.

Obituary Preview: Ms. Shirley M Thornton, age 87 of Dayton OH, went home to be with her heavenly father on Tuesday, August 1, 2023 after a lengthen illness. Shirley was the daughter of the late Robert C. “Red” Prear and Lois (Wheat) Thornton. She was a graduate of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, Class of 1952. Shirley married the late Reverend Dr. Ernest “Bubby” Neilson, Jr. and to this union four children were born.
Shirley was employed by McCall Printing Press Company and later worked for the US Postal Service. She began her postal career as a sorter and was quickly promoted to a customer service clerk. She retired as a customer service supervisor after more than 24 years of service.
She was a lifelong member of Greater Allen African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church where she was an usher, member of the choir, a class leader and a vacation Bible school leader. Shirley was civic minded and a passionate community activist. She worked with the City of Dayton’s Priority Boards and the City of Trotwood. The Trotwood mayor and city council recognized her for her volunteer work with the Neighborhood Association Presidents Council. She truly enjoyed working with the Melissa Bess Child Development Center and being a member of the American Business Women’s Association, Polaris Chapter. Throughout her life, she received numerous state and city honors/awards for her community service.
Shirley was a committed member of the New Hope Chapter #10, Dayton, Ohio, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Freemasons, Order of the Eastern Stars for 65 years. She held various offices in her chapter and in the Daughters of the Desert. In addition, she was a member of the Supreme Grand Chapter of the America Order of Eastern Star, Inc. and the Supreme Council of America - Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite.
She is preceded in death by her birth father, mother, adopted father, Lenistein L. “Buddy” Thornton; 2 brothers: Robert “Corky” Prear and Lenistein “Sonny” Thornton; 2 sisters: Regina Prear Borum and Marceline Thornton Wright; grandmother, Ethel C. Prear; aunt, Exine Prear Wilson; 2 uncles: J. Paul Prear and Roger P. Prear; a cousin, Benjamin P. Wilson; and a daughter-in-law, Amy J. Neilson.

She received many accolades: The Color of Hope Award for Excellence in the field of substance abuse prevention and treatment, April 1996, from AKOMA Diversity of Sisterhood; Earned the President’s Award as Interim Executive Director in July 1997; the Sharon M. Scott Inspirational Hour and Award, dedicated June 1998, at Hitchcock Center for Women, Inc.; In 2000, AKOMA honored Sharon again for her dedication and commitment to women’s chemical dependency treatment services with the Women of Color Award. She completed her career as a Professional Counselor for the Department of Defense. Sharon enjoyed life. She traveled extensively and spent some time abroad seeing the world.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Todd Scott; her brother, Odis Williams, and her sister, Theresa. She leaves to cherish her death, her loving husband of 52 years, Curtis Scott Jr.; sisters: Deanna Shelton, Linda Hubbard, and Janet Williams; granddaughters: Tyler Marie Scott and Todeisha Jones; great-grandchildren: DeAnthony and DeMiya; lifelong friend, Marjorie Baker; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends.

Joseph E. Taylor - November 23, 1938 - July 06, 2023

Obituary Preview: On the afternoon of July 6, 2023, Joseph Taylor received the ultimate assignment from God. He was called from labor to reward to serve as director of God’s heavenly choir.
God had been preparing Joseph for this position since he was 19 months old, when he first sang with his family group, The Taylor Tots of Piqua, OH. He began playing the piano at age 4, and at only 9 years old he was pianist for the Sunday School at Cyrene AME Church in Piqua. God provided him with many opportunities to cultivate his musical talent and Joseph continued to prove himself to be a faithful Christian servant, he tirelessly committed his time and talent to minister to churches, choirs, groups and the community-at-large. Most noteworthy is his 45 years at Greater Allen AME Church serving as minister of music, choir director, superintendent of Sunday School and Steward. Joseph served other church congregations including: Cyrene AME (Piqua, OH), Macedonia Baptist (Dayton, OH), Dixon United Methodist (Dayton, OH) and Mt Zion AME (Southampton, Bermuda). He led the following groups and choirs: The Joe Taylor Singers, The Gospel Delegates, The Gospel Believers, The Littlejohn Brothers, Dayton chapter of the GMWA and ONE. He also wrote dozens of gospel songs, some of which were recorded. Over a span of 80+ years Joseph ministered to churches and communities throughout Ohio, in Bermuda and across the United States.
Joseph was born the youngest of 15 children to Darrell and Louise Taylor of Piqua, OH. After graduating from Piqua Central High School, he attended Central State University (Wilberforce, OH), and served in the United States Air Force for 4 years (1958-1962). In May 1962, he married Carolyn Jean Troupe of Claremore, OK. They were happily married for 58 years until her death in July 2020. Their union was blessed with six children- Maria Michelle (James) Simpson, Kevin Joseph (Ursula) Taylor and Sean David (Shannon) Taylor; seven grandchildren- Jaron Elliot Simpson, Taylor Jarel (Ariana) Simpson, Kevin Joseph Taylor II, Camden Sean Taylor, Benjamin Michael Dale Taylor, Kennedy Elizabeth Taylor and Aaron LaSalle Taylor; and six great grandchildren- Ariya Jae Simpson, Semira Gloria Simpson, Hailey Alexis Suekamling, Madison Gabrielle-Ann Taylor, James Avery Simpson and Kevin Joseph Taylor III. Joseph worked at NCR Corporation as a Regional Manager and Systems Analyst before retiring in 1994. After retirement he was an analyst at the Bank of Butterfield in Bermuda for 3 years and music teacher/ choir director at Richard Allen Schools in Dayton, OH.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and wife. He is survived by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren; sister-in-law Ann Thornhill, nephew, and great nieces; close cousin Luisa Herbert; close nieces and nephews: Cheryl Davis, Cecilia Davis, LaDonna Burns, Vernon Burns, Vicki Gaynor, Tamyra Hobson, Terry Bolds, Tayana Smith, Cheryl Harris Manoly, and David and Tamisha Thornhill; great nieces: Makani Thornhill and Kendall Thornhill; special friends: Leroi Hall, Linda Leonard, Don Barmore, Sharon Crutcher, Frances and Tom Maultsby, the Littlejohn family and Marlena Smalls; special in-laws: Sammye Hitchye and Yvonne Jacques-Jefferson; former neighbor and friend Debbie Ragland; family friends Rev. William was a faithful member of the Christian Missionary Baptist Church for approximately 10 years under the leadership of the late Reverend A. C. Peterson, Emeritus, where he served as a Deacon. He later joined the New Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Malik Shaw.
William was retired from Standard Register Company after 30 years of service. He loved the Lord with his whole heart, he had such a loving spirit, kind hearted to all. He enjoyed bowling, listening to music, playing the drums and spending time with his extended family. William will be truly missed by many.
William was preceded in death by his parents, William and Indastine Daniels; his wife of 37 years, Cathy Daniels and his sister, Gloria Russell. Obituary Preview: Virgil H Smith Sr., Age 100, was born on November 19, 1922, in Elberton Georgia to the late Charles and Ruth Smith. On Saturday, June 10, 2023, God dispatched His holy host of angels to escort him to his heavenly home.
At an early age, his family moved to Dayton Ohio where he attended Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. After high school, he met and married the love of his life, Lena Smith and to this union of 70 years, four children were born.
Virgil retired from Delco Air after more than 30 years of service. He was an excellent bowler and loved all sports, especially “Them Bengals.” Virgil loved spending time with his family, always teasing and cracking jokes to keep everyone smiling. Even during his sickness, he still managed to say something to make us smile. His smile and playfulness will be missed by all that knew him. Virgil was generous to all, always ready to assist in any way he could.
Virgil and Lena joined St Luke Baptist Church in 1953. He was a dedicated member, moving from the Clifton Drive location to the Current location on Gettysburg Avenue. Virgil sang in the Mass choir and Male Chorus for many years until his health started to decline.
Virgil is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Ruth; his loving wife, Lena Smith; his son, Jack Smith; his brothers: Charles and Marvin Smith; and one sister, Margene Brame.
