Larry Pilling, 75, of Macedonia, Iowa, passed away on May 31, 2023 in the comfort of his home where he was surrounded by family members.
Larry Paul Pilling was born on October 1, 1947 in Council Bluffs, the eldest child of Paul Lewis and Daisy Mae (Moore) Pilling. Larry grew up east of Macedonia, Iowa on the family farm and graduated from Carson-Macedonia High School in 1965. After high school Larry began farming full time with his father and continued to farm with his son-in-law, Nick Allen, until his death.
Larry and Karlene Sue (Susie) Eckert were united in marriage on October 18, 1969 at the Macedonia United Methodist Church. They made their home on a farm near Macedonia and were blessed with two daughters, Leslie Ann and Lisa Sue.
Larry was born to be a farmer. His father taught him how to drive a tractor at the age of six. When Larry wasn't helping his father with farm chores, you could find him hanging out with Rich Henry who he considered a brother. The two of them had fun riding horses, hunting squirrels, and "torturing" Larry's sisters, Paula and Marcia. A strong work ethic was instilled in Larry by his father from the time he started helping out on the farm. Along with farming, Larry enjoyed the role of a seed sales representative for Pioneer Seed for over 25 years. Larry was an honest man of his word and he was well-respected by everyone he did business with. From the landlords that he rented farm ground from to the customers that he sold seed to, everyone always had such high praise for Larry. Whenever Larry had somewhere to be, he always managed to take the "long way" to his destinations so that he could see the different sights and sounds of Southwest Iowa.
Larry joined the U.S. Army Reserves in 1966 and served for six years. Larry was an active member of both the American Legion and the Masonic Lodge. Larry loved pheasant hunting and deer hunting every season. He also looked forward to the fishing trips he would take to either South Dakota or Minnesota in the summers. In his free time, Larry loved watching old westerns and car races (Nascar and Indy) on television. He cheered on the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals. Larry had a love for his pets and some of his favorite memories involved gator rides with his dogs Mickey and Brownie.
Larry's grandkids were his pride and joy. He found the role of grandfather very fulfilling and he enjoyed every minute spent with them. The grandkids affectionately referred to him as "Pop." During the final months of his life, Larry was extremely grateful for the time he spent with his two sisters. Without hesitation, Paula and Marcia moved in with Larry to care for him and look after him just as their mom would have done. During this time, the three of them had the opportunity to take a trip down memory lane and reminisce on cherished childhood memories.
Larry was preceded in death by wife Susie Pilling, his parents, Paul and Daisy Pilling, in-laws, John and Gladys Eckert, and brother-in-law Dennis Peterson.
Larry is survived by his daughters, Leslie Pilling and husband Kirk Eckert of Fallbrook, CA, and Lisa Allen and husband Nick of Macedonia; three wonderful grandchildren, Jackson Paul Allen, Lillian Lynn Eckert, and Daizy Sue Allen; sisters, Paula Peterson of Davenport, IA and Marcia Pilling of Seattle, WA; nieces and nephews; many extended relatives; and a host of special friends.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the life of the deceased, providing closure for those who are grieving, and serving as a historical record of the person's life. They also give family and friends an opportunity to pay tribute to their loved one and share memories.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include funeral or memorial service details.

Who writes an obituary?

In most cases, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes or mortuaries may also offer assistance in writing and publishing obituaries.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. A good rule of thumb is to keep it concise yet meaningful.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can help personalize the tribute and make it more engaging.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Check the publication's website or contact their customer service department for submission guidelines. Some may accept online submissions, while others require email or phone submissions.

Is there a cost associated with publishing an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online platforms charge a fee for publishing an obituary. The cost varies depending on the publication, word count, and additional features such as photos or video tributes.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told in your own words.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce the death, you can opt for a private obituary or create a memorial page on a password-protected website or social media platform.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber. Including humorous stories or personality traits can help celebrate the person's life and make the tribute more relatable.

How do I handle errors or corrections in an already published obituary?

Contact the publication or online platform where the obituary was published and provide correction details. They will work with you to correct the error and republish the revised obituary.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a worthy cause.

What if I want to publish an obituary in multiple languages?

Some publications and online platforms offer translation services or accommodate multilingual submissions. Be sure to check their policies before submitting your obituary.

Can I create an online memorial or tribute page instead of an obituary?

Yes, online memorial pages are becoming increasingly popular as they allow for more flexibility and creativity in celebrating a loved one's life. These pages can remain active for years to come.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the publication or online platform. Some may publish within hours or days, while others may take longer due to editorial review processes.

Can I edit or update an already published obituary?

In some cases, yes. Check with the publication or online platform for their editing policies. Keep in mind that changes may not always be possible once an obituary has been published.

What if I want to publish an obituary for someone who passed away years ago?

You can still publish an obituary even if the person passed away years ago. This can be especially meaningful if you're creating a memorial page or wanting to share their story with others.

Can I include quotes, poems, or songs in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including meaningful quotes, poems, or song lyrics can add depth and personalization to the tribute.

How do I ensure that my loved one's legacy lives on through their obituary?

Beyond publishing an obituary, consider creating a memorial fund, planting trees, or establishing a scholarship in their name. These gestures can help keep their memory alive for years to come.

What resources are available to help me write an obituary?

You can find templates and guidelines online, consult with funeral homes or mortuaries, or seek guidance from friends and family members who have written obituaries in the past.

Can I republish an existing obituary on social media or other online platforms?

YES! You can share existing obituaries on social media platforms like Facebook or Twitter, or republish them on other websites or blogs with permission from the original publisher.
