Roberta Nadine Chance - September 13, 1936 - March 28, 2024

Departed: 03/28/2024 (Locust Grove)
Obituary Preview: Roberta Nadine Chance, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, left her body on Thursday, March 28, 2024, at the age of 87 years, 6 months, and 15 days. She was loved dearly and will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know her.
Roberta was born on September 13, 1936, to Robert “Bus” and Kathleen Robinson in Locust Grove, Cherokee Territory, Oklahoma. Roberta was the oldest child to sister and brother, Sue and Edward “Son”. Some of Roberta’s fondest childhood memories were being with her grandparents who lived near Locust Grove. Her grandmother Robinson loved Maraschino Cherry cake, and often asked Roberta to bake it. Roberta also enjoyed sleeping over at her grandmother Holden’s house, where she always felt deeply loved.
She attended school in Locust Grove from 1941-1954, graduating high school with 30 other classmates. Grandma Robinson gifted Roberta with a musical jewelry box and a bouquet of gladiolas for graduation which Roberta said made her feel so special.
After graduating, Roberta moved to Kansas City, Missouri to attend the National School of Aeronautics. In March 1955, Roberta earned a “Ticket and Reservations” diploma and shortly after was hired by Central Airlines to work at the Kansas City, Tulsa and Fort Worth airports. This began Roberta’s love of travel.
While catching the bus to work to Central Airlines at Meacham Field in Fort Worth, Roberta met her husband-to-be James Henry Chance, who was a charming bus driver. Roberta and James were married in 1957, then moved to California to start a family and welcomed four children: Kathleen Beth (1957), Cynthia Lea (1959), Robert Wesley (1961) and Gary Wayne (1963).
In 1964, Roberta began working for IBM in San Jose, California, assisting the punch card line. Punch cards were a component used to run the first computers. That year, she gifted family and friends holiday wreaths made from discarded punch cards, sprayed gold with pinecone accents. In 1965, Roberta started working at Beech-Nut, where she made Lifesavers and baby food. We were never short of cough drops or mint lifesavers for our homemade Valentines cards. Beech-Nut is where she met Rudy “Sal’ Munoz and they married on March 31, 1972. Roberta continued to work for Beech-Nut until they closed the San Jose division in 1972.
Roberta was always a hard worker and often worked a second job in the food and hospitality industry. This led her to take a full-time job in the East Side Union High School District as a cafeteria cook at Andrew Hill High School. It was the beginning of a very rewarding career, which spanned over 16 years. She quickly built a strong leadership reputation and was offered the opportunity to manage two new high schools and several elementary school cafeterias in the district. In 1977, she was elected President of Valle Verde Chapter California School Food Service Association and served there for four years. In 1978, Roberta received the Josephine P. Morris Scholarship Award from the California School Food Service Association for her outstanding performance and innovative contributions. This award prompted her to go back to school to get a Director Level certification at the American School Food Service Association, which she completed in August of 1986. It was during this time that she married Donald Stephen Ribisi on July 9, 1983. Roberta then went on to become the Director of Food Service management for Franklin-McKinley School District supporting over 20 elementary and middle schools in San Jose until she retired in late 1989.
Roberta later moved to Oklahoma and came out of her first retirement in July 1990 to join the Maintenance & Engineering Quality Assurance team with American Airlines. She received numerous awards for her exceptional work and was recognized for perfect attendance for 8 years, retiring again in 1998. Roberta continued her love of travel, especially with her church, and through American Airlines her family was also gifted with flights. Over the years Roberta had a passion for tutoring and encouraging students of all ages, giving them the tools to excel in life through reading, writing and math. She was also an avid quilter and leaves behind many beautiful quilts as part of her legacy. She loved football and golf, walking, and reading books including her bible. Education was very important to her, and she encouraged her grandchildren to study. Roberta was proud of her Cherokee heritage and wanted to remind her great-great grandchildren “Don’t forget that you are Cherokee, that is where your dignity is.”
She is survived by her four children; Kathleen Beth (Steve) Mendoza, Cynthia Lea Chance, Robert Wesley (Rosemarie) Chance, and Gary Wayne (Hong) Chance; sister-in-law, Christy Robinson; daughter-in-law, Linda Chance. She is preceded in death by her parents, sister Barbara Sue Cooper, brother Edward (Son) Clausine Robinson, husbands James Henry Chance, Rudy “Sal” Munoz and Donald Stephen Ribisi and nephew Scott Robinson.
Roberta lived a very principled life and made note of 6 life lessons to remember. May the wisdom of the lessons she leaves behind bring us comfort as we say farewell. 1. Time marches on regardless of what takes place in your life. 2. Knowing Jesus is the most important part of life. For he is our hope and eternal life. 3. Never gossip about another person. It will come back and bite you. 4. Always be kind to others. You never know when you might need their help. 5. Learn what is right and wrong. Always do right. Be honest. Admit if you have wronged someone and seek forgiveness. 6. Have common sense. If you don't, learn what it is.
Our love is with you Roberta, as you take your last big journey into the heart of the Creator. May Heaven be as beautiful as you always spoke of.
