Virginia was born on January 23, 1947, to the late Joe Mack Livingston and Mable Williams-Livingston in Bastrop, Louisiana.  She was baptized at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church in Louisiana. There, she developed an abiding faith in Christian principles, always embracing the call to serve her family and community. Virginia was an extraordinary student. She excelled academically and was Valedictorian of her graduating class. She enjoyed a wide range of extracurricular activities, especially basketball. When she was a senior,  Virginia met  a  young man who would become her high school sweetheart and future husband Colonel Lee Daniel Jr.  She affectionately called him  "Dan."
Eager to pursue higher education, Virginia attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She was a proud Southern University Jaguar and delighted in campus life. Colonel, a student at Grambling State University, visited her on campus often. Virginia graduated from college in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education.
Teaching and mentoring were her life’s work and in 1988. Virginia resolved to return to school to earn her Master of Science degree in Educational Psychology. She cared deeply about understanding how students learn best and how to craft pedagogy that would meet the needs of diverse school populations. Her outstanding service to the students in her community is a testament to her commitment to building a better world starting with the youth.
When Colonel passed away in 1991, Virginia grew even closer to her only child, Tanya. She would often remind Tanya, “It’s just the two of us,” as reassurance that they could count on each other. She made every effort to express her pride in Tanya and truly loved being her mother. Following her 2004 retirement, Virginia spent time traveling around the world with The Jetsetters Traveling Group. She traveled to China, Spain, South Africa, Jerusalem, Israel, Rome, Brazil, and more. In her spare time, she stayed connected with friends and family, watched The Young and the Restless, enjoyed trivia, and read her Bible.
Virginia Daniel finished her race successfully and rose happily to her eternal home on Monday, April 11, 2022. She was preceded in death by her husband Colonel Lee Daniel Jr.; parents, Joe and Mable Livingston; and brothers Robert R. Williams and Joe M. On a chilly day in December Elijah, “Babe” Thomas and his pretty young wife, Maggie Thomas, prepared for another addition to their growing family.  At St. Charles Legion Memorial Hospital, the young couple welcomed their fifth child. Emma Lou Thomas made her advent into this world on December 6, 1954. Life for the Thomas family was about to make a wonderful change. When she was only thirteen, Emma professed her belief in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was baptized by Rev. Albert Jones. From that day to the time God called her home, Emma’s love for the Lord and her spirit- filled proclamations about His love, were evident each time she entered a church. Praising God made her happy and she “just couldn’t keep it to herself.”
Her love for basketball developed into a passion that would last her entire lifetime. Newellton High School’s coach Mary Irving, knew that Emma Lou Thomas was something special. Her ball handling skills, her ability to make plays that were impossible for other players, her ability to “read” her opponent’s weaknesses made her a force to be reckoned with on the basketball court. Opposing teams dreaded playing Newellton because of “that Thomas girl.” Her height made her an imposing force. Emma enjoyed teaching, but she loved basketball. She loved sharing that love with her young basketball players who were dedicated to the sport and eager to please her. Her love and and their dedication led the Newellton Lady Bears to win her first state championship in 1980-81. By 1984, Emma had won two state championships in 4 years. In 1991, she was chosen as coach of the East Squad of the LHSAA All-Star Team.  She had the best record at Newellton High School with 479 games won and 97 games lost!
Emma was asked and she accepted the position of head coach of the Lady Rams basketball program at Bastrop High School in 2001. That same year Coach Emma Thomas Brooks guided the Lady Rams to the Sweet 16 for the first time in the history of the school. She was appointed Assistant Athletic Director and chosen as the coach of the East Squad of the LHSAA All-Star Team for the second time.  Her career record at BHS was 307 games  won and 129 games lost.   Coach Emma Brooks retired in 2017 with 785 games won and 226 games lost. She had 28 Coach of the Year awards, 31 All District Awards, 1 Northeast LA Coach of the Year Award, 2 State Championship titles, and appeared in the Sweet 16 twelve times.
While in Bastrop, she was a member of the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, where she loved to sing in the choir. Emma Thomas Brooks believed in the power of prayer. Her faith and her powerful prayers and those of so many others healed Danielle when she underwent open heart surgery.  She knew, without a doubt that God was the source of her strength and the center of her joy. After retirement she moved to Baton Rouge, united with the Ebenezer Church in South Baton Rouge , and enjoyed being closer to her family. She loved traveling to visit her children and grandchildren. She treasured birthdays, holidays, and all family time. On Monday, April 11, 2022, on a highway in Beaumont, TX, as she traveled to visit her daughter and her grandbabies, God SUMMONED Emma Lou Thomas Brooks. She ANSWERED! Amen! Amen! Amen!

On Monday, January 17, 2022, Barbara Landry Goldsby, beloved daughter, wife, mother, and friend, transitioned peacefully from this life.
Born July 22, 1949, to the late Lillie Eaglin and Joseph O'Neal Landry of Opelousas, Louisiana,  Barbara was an only child. She attended Holy Ghost Catholic Church and School graduating with honors. Her next step on her educational journey was attending Southern University and A & M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It was there she met a handsome young man from Bastrop, Louisiana, who would eventually become her husband. The late Douglas “Ace” Goldsby, a humorous storyteller, delighted in telling anyone how they first met. According to “Ace,” he was walking on Southern's campus and this beautiful young lady, jumped from a bush, wearing a yellow mini skirt. She said, “Where have you been all my life?” Those who knew Douglas knew that story was probably just the opposite. Douglas and Barbara were blessed with three beautiful children: Sherrise, Douglas, and Tearany.
Barbara graduated from Southern with a Bachelor's degree in elementary education and a minor in English. She possessed a remarkable passion for education. Teachers have the power to inspire, through their attitudes, actions, and the lessons they teach. Barbara's compassion, her patience with her children and those around her were evident as she shaped and she molded young lives for thirty-seven as an educator. These qualities were rooted in her passion to teach. She truly believed that each of her students could succeed and was dedicated to the achievement of this success. Memories of grading test papers, homework assignments, and class assignments are still vivid in the minds of “her girls.” And, those papers HAD to be in alphabetical order! She loved working with children and seeing them grow and thrive.
Her life was centered around her family. Her greatest gifts were her children. Her loving and nurturing spirit, her beautiful smile, and her uncanny ability to “calm any storm” made her a favorite confidant to young and old alike.
Barbara loved a bargain. She could spend hours and hours shopping in stores for items, but always making sure she received the best price possible for an item.
Monday, January 17, 2022, with her daughters at her bedside, Barbara Ann Landry Goldsby, beloved daughter, mother, educator, and friend peacefully passed from this life to her eternal home. She was seventy-two.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Goldsby, a son, Douglas Goldsby II, a brother, Robert Landry, and her parents, Lillie and Joseph Landry. She leaves to cherish her wise counsel, gentle smile, her words of wisdom; and, to continue her legacy; two daughters, Sherrise (Gerald Boley) and Terany Goldsby of Bastrop, LA; four granddaughters, Tiffani Goldsby, Caitlin Robinson, Imri, and Indya Carr; and three great-grandchildren, Douglas Goldsby, Logan, and Khloe Robinson, friends, and hundreds of grateful students who will always remember Mrs. Barbara Goldsby: “their sweet teacher who truly made a difference in their lives." *********** “Her strength, courage, and peaceful demeanor enabled her to deal with the toughest of situations.”

God sent a rose, plucked from Heaven’s garden. Her mission was simple; to reflect His glory, and leave behind a beautiful story… And She Did! *********** Each day, sunshine, or rain, she dazzled! Adorned with a smile and a heart of servitude,
she gave to her community and family. The Rose taught us how to bloom
To bloom in spite of adversity. She taught us by faith to truly believe, And with the help of the Lord,
we could be anything our minds’ conceived. The Rose was resilient;
she will forever be remembered. "Bloom Beautiful Rose - On The Other Side!" ****************
On a rainy Thursday in the small rural northeastern Louisiana hamlet of Bastrop, Louisiana,  Morrell and Ruth Spencer were blessed with a beautiful baby girl. The rain did not diminish their joy, however, because, on August 10, 1950, Linda Diane Spencer made her advent into the world. She was given the name "Linda,"  biblical  in nature, meaning "tender woman." Linda Diane Spencer would live a life that epitomized her name.
She was blessed with so many admirable qualities and she freely shared her love of life with her family and friends alike. Her radiant smile would light up a room; but she believed in truth and fairness, and would not hesitate to tell you so.
In 1967 Linda was joined in holy matrimony with McArthur Bibby.  They were blessed with a beautiful baby girl. Her name: Cathy. She attended Northeast Louisiana State University. Linda served as an educator in the Morehouse Parish School System for thirty-three years She touched the lives of hundreds of children.  Many would recognize her when she was out, remembering times that she made them feel special.  They would remind her of those times. She would look lovingly at them and flash her famous smile. She remembered!
Linda's greatest joy was spending quality time with her family.  She loved shopping; delighting in being impeccably dressed when she stepped out of her home.
On November 23. 2021, God, in His infinite wisdom, felt that it was time to return this beautiful rose to His heavenly garden. She closed her eyes. And, she slept.
Linda leaves a lifetime of memories for all who encountered her to cherish. Her legacy is continued by her daughter, grandchildren, and siblings. "Bloom Beautiful Rose - On The Other Side!"

The Celebration of Life honoring Mrs. Robin Lorraine Smith Loche will be held on Wednesday, November 10, 2021, at the St. John Missionary Baptist Church.  Rev. Steven R. Conley, Jr. will be the officiant of the services. The interment will follow the services in St. John Cemetery.  Her Visitation will be held from four to six p.m. in the chapel of Loche's Mortuary on Tuesday evening, November 9, 2021.  To send flowers, words of condolence, light a candle, or plant a tree, kindly go to www.lochesmortuaryinc.com. A Heavenly Songbird "My heart is confident, God; I will sing; I will sing praises with the whole of my being. Wake up, harp and lyre! ... I will praise you, Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to you among the nations."
Robin Lorraine Smith was born to the union of Samuel and Eloise Smith on December 20, 1961, a Wednesday in Bastrop, Louisiana. An early Christmas present for this young couple in Bastrop, Louisiana. Little did they know that this beautiful baby girl would be blessed by God with an angelic voice that would touch the hearts of many.  On November 2, 2021, this beautiful songbird flew away to be at rest; leaving the cares and pains of this world behind.  She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings.
Robin LOVED to sing.  When she was younger, secular songs were popular and she could sing them when hanging with her friends or working around the house,  But the exhilaration that she felt when singing praises to God could not be matched.  When she was in the choir at the St John Missionary  Baptist Church she felt free and so close to God.
Robin attended the public schools of Morehouse Parish.  It was here that she met  Pamela and Yvette, and they would form a bond that would last her lifetime.  Robin never met a stranger.  Her radiant smile and her infectious laughter endeared her to members of St. John, her friends, her teachers, and members of the community.
On July 24, 2013, a young man came through the doors of St. John.  She "thought" she knew all the young men in Bastrop, but this one did not look familiar.  She was determined to find out who he was. She had caught his eye also. They were properly introduced, and a whirlwind courtship began. Exactly one year later, on July 24, 2014, Robin Lorraine Smith became Mrs. George Patrick Loche. Even though illnesses often plagued both of them, their faith in God and love of life afforded them opportunities to go on cruises, and to travel to different parts of the country., to care for her son, to meet to his son and daughter, and to bask in a love that would last forever.  She made him a better man. "She taught him how to love."   Blissfully happy, the young couple shared a love that would transcend the short time granted to them by God. On November 2, 2021, with the love of her life holding her hand, Robin Lorraine Smith Loche, moved to another realm, a realm where pain is a thing of the past, and illness is but a distant memory.  A place where "The Heavenly Songbird " would join those loved ones who had gone on before; a place where one "never grows old."  "Sing Heavenly Songbird, Sing." "Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

She enjoyed fishing, cooking, and spending time with her grandchildren. Teola was a dedicated mother to Sue Gipson Wilson and Stephanie Dejohnette Price, but the joys of her life were her grandchildren and spending quality time with them. She loved helping people and gave unselfishly of herself to those in need.
"HER JOURNEY HAS ENDED HERE.  NOW, THE REAL WORKS BEGIN FOR SHE HAD ALREADY PREPARED FOR HER GLORIOUS DESTINATION."  HALLELUJAH. ********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************* A Mother’s love is something that no one can explain, It is made of deep devotion and of sacrifice and pain, It is endless and unselfish and enduring come what may For nothing can destroy it or take that love away… It is patient and forgiving when all others are forsaking, And it never fails or falters even though the heart is breaking… It believes beyond believing when the world around condemns, And it glows with all the beauty of the rarest, brightest gems…
It is far beyond defining, it defies all explanation, and it still remains a secret like the mysteries of creation… A many-splendored miracle man cannot understand And another wondrous evidence of God’s tender guiding hand.

GRADY MURPHY was born the son of farmers, Alice Irvin Murphy and Milton Murphy, on November 5, 1925, in Huttig, Arkansas. He would become the sixth of eight siblings. The family soon moved to Bastrop, Louisiana. As a child, he attended and was baptized at New Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in Bastrop, Louisiana.
From 1956-1970, he served as principal at Magnolia High School where he was so popular and respected by the students that he earned the nickname “Mr. Magnolia.” This stuck with him throughout his life, and up to his death, he served as advisor to the Magnolia School Reunion Committee. From 1970-1978, Grady was employed with the West Carroll Media Center as Supervisor of Mathematics. He returned from the West Carroll School System in 1979, but being concerned about the youth of his community, he returned to work briefly in 1989 as one of the first teachers for the East Carroll Alternative School Program. Later, in 1997, he served as an instructor in a college consortium
Mr. Murphy was always interested and involved in politics  on every level. In 1974, the citizens of Lake Providence elected him one of five all-black aldermen, along with a black mayor, and a black city marshal, the first Black people elected to these positions since Reconstruction. The story of their election made the pages of Jet Magazine (June 27, 1974; Vol. XLVI, No. 14; p. 10).
Upon moving to Lake Providence, Grady became a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church. There he served as organist, particularly for the Sunday school, as a Sunday school teacher, and as a deacon. He often recited the 23rd Psalm, commenting in-between the verses. Grady was constantly concerned about the welfare and effective ministry of his church, First Missionary Baptist Church of Lake Providence, Louisiana. He also was active with the East Carroll Parish Baptist Association. He knew the Shepherd and was “looking forward to singing with the angels,” after bearing his cross down here. Grady Murphy left this earthly tent for his heavenly home on Friday, October 8, 2021, at approximately 2:55 p.m. Absent from the body and present with the Lord. He was preceded in death by his parents, Milton and Alice Irvin Murphy; and by six of his siblings: Eliza Murphy Jimerson (Herman); Asilee Murphy Smith (Elisha); Freddie Murphy; Haƫtie Mae Murphy; his only brother, Victor Murphy (Shelby); and Henrietta Murphy Spragin (Ore Lee, Sr.). Left to cherish his memories are one sister, Valena Vernestine Murphy Ray of Mission Hills, California (James - deceased); special friends, Consewilla Reed and Pam Henderson; a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews; and many grateful co-workers, students, and friends.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries are important because they provide a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also informing others of their passing. They can also serve as a historical record, providing valuable information for genealogical research and future generations.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?
