Obituary Preview: Estil Luther “Bud” Burns, age 53 of Lewisburg tragically passed away on April 16, 2024 in a single vehicular accident near Pence Springs, W.Va. He was born June 21, 1970, in Ronceverte to the late Jimmy Luther and Elizabeth Ann (Keene) Burns.
Bud attended Alderson, union, and Lewisburg schools. He was employed at Mi Tequilia Mexican restaurant where he enjoyed working alongside his coworkers, and they all thought very highly of him. Bud will be remembered for his love of music, working on cars, wearing his cowboy boots, and his dogs. He never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone. He always had a tale to tell. Bud enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, he will be deeply missed.
Bud is survived by his loving daughters, Sheri Marie Burns and her husband Josh Arnett of Lewisburg, Melinda Burns Reed and her husband Mark of Hilton Village, WV, his sons, Aaron Keith Burns and Gary Michael Burns both of Lewisburg, his sister Sherry Elaine Burns and her companion John Clark of Lewisburg, his eight grandchildren, Williow Ortiz, Laurel Ortiz, Luna Arnett, Rhea Arnett, Sara Dunbar, Robert Dunbar, Aaron Dunbar, and Trenton Bennett, his nephew, Joseph Luther Burns and his wife Laura of Pickaway, as well as many loving cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his niece Emilee Clark.
Family and friends are welcome to attend at Lobban Funeral Home, 205 S Monroe St., Alderson, on Saturday, April 27, 2024, from 12:30 p.m. until the memorial service at 2:00 p.m., at the funeral home, with Pastor Anthony Carter officiating.

Mary Lou Sims - November 23, 1961 - March 24, 2024

Obituary Preview: Mary Lou Sims, age 62, of Alderson, W.Va., passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2024 at Lewisburg Health Center in Ronceverte, W.Va., following a long illness.
Born November 23, 1961 at Blue Sulphur Springs, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles Ross and Gladys Marie Hiser Sims. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Chester Lee Hiser; two brothers, Larry Lee Sims and Curtis Monroe Sims; two sisters, Betty Jane Sims and Rebecca Darlene Sims Hiser; and a nephew, Joshua Paul Sims.
Ms. Sims was a homemaker and babysitter. She attended Alderson Schools and was of the Christian faith. She loved to cook, can vegetables from the garden, swinging on the porch, and loved animals, especially her cats and dogs. She loved to spend time with her family and taking care of her family was by far her greatest joy.
Survivors include her companion of 45 years, Gary Lane Bragg, Sr. of Alderson; a son, Gary Lane Bragg, Jr. and his wife, Sara, of Rupert, W.Va.; a daughter, Rachel Nadine Bragg of Rupert; one sister, Audrey Marie Hall of Ronceverte; two brothers, Charles Robert "Bobby" Sims of Fort Spring, W.Va., and George Garland Sims and his companion, Nancy Smith, of Alderson; four grandsons, Lane Bragg of Green Sulphur Springs, W.Va., Kaiden Ransom of Roanoke, Va., Landon Clendenin of Meadow Bridge, W.Va., and Hunter Clendenin of Meadow Bridge; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Friday, March 29, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel in Alderson with Pastor Anthony Carter officiating. Entombment will follow at the Wallace Memorial Mausoleum at Clintonville, W.Va. Friends may call Friday, March 29, 2024 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Lobban Funeral Home in Alderson.

Born November 1, 1987 at Greenbrier Valley Hospital in Fairlea, Stacy was the daughter of David and Barbara Harris, and mother to Zoey Harris, Addylan Harris, and Giannah Harris. In addition to her parents and children, Stacy is survived by her siblings, Caleb Harris and Holli Barr (Tommy); and nephews and niece, Colton Barr, Paxtyn Barr, and Olivia Barr, and grandfather Richard H. Cook.
Above all, Stacy was a loving mother whose life revolved around her three daughters, and she will be remembered for her unwavering adoration of Zoey, Addy, and GiGi. She was always happiest when surrounded by friends and family, celebrating the simplicities of life at a cook out, camp fire, or any other social gathering. Growing up, Stacy was a sensitive and compassionate girl who lit up every room and made friends with ease. She was a natural athlete who could run like the wind, was a standout softball player, and seemed to instantly master any sport with very little effort. She was a beautiful, talented girl who grew to be a devoted mother and she will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be Monday, April 1, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. at the Old Greenbrier Baptist Church in Alderson, W.Va. with the Pastor Josh Rhodes Officiating. Burial will follow at the Old Greenbrier Memorial Cemetery in Alderson, W.Va. Friends may call Sunday, March 31, 2024 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Lobban Funeral Home in Alderson, W.Va., and one hour prior to services at the Church on Monday.

Obituary Preview: Oma Jean Thompson, age 81 of Bluefield, WV went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 7, 2024. She was on born November 26, 1942, in Alderson, WV, a daughter of the late Overton Otto and Melva Blanche Hughes Thompson.
After graduating from Talcott High School in 1962. She went on to work at Deskins Grocery store before starting her own cleaning business until she retired at the age of 79. Jean always enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Her favorite things included fishing and watching sports, especially football and basketball in her spare time. She will be remembered for her strong work ethic, wonderful personality, and her love for her two fur babies, Cody and Kasey.
She is survived by her sister, Carol Rudisill and her husband David, of Barger Springs, her brothers, Ronald Thompson of Alderson, Benny Thompson and his wife Janice of Griffith Creek, Gary Thompson and his wife Ruth of Lewisburg, as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was proceeded in death by her siblings, Bill Thompson, Margaret Ann Angell, Charles Thompson, Dave Thompson, Fred Thompson, Bob Thompson, and Kenneth Thompson.
Graveside services and burial will be on Saturday, March 30, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the Alderson Cemetery in Alderson, W.V., with Pastor Derek Hall officiating.

Frances Tuckwiller Simmons - November 22, 1927 - March 02, 2024

Obituary Preview: Frances Tuckwiller Simmons, age 96, of Alderson, W.Va., passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at the Peyton Hospice House in Lewisburg, W.Va., following a short illness.
Born November 22, 1927 in Lewisburg, she was the daughter of the late Ross and Margaret Moomaw Tuckwiller. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Bill Twohig Simmons; a daughter, Julia Cline Simmons Shafer; a brother, John Tuckwiller and his wife, JoAnn; a sister, Ruth Tuckwiller Sweet, and her husband, Bill; two sisters-in-law, Mary Lou Tuckwiller and Evelyn "Sis" Simmons; and a brother-in-law, Hubert "Mike" Simmons and his wife, Virginia.
Frances graduated from Lewisburg High School and West Virginia University with a degree in English Literature. She fell in love and married Bill Simmons on August 11, 1951 and they raised and educated four children. She taught school at Rupert High School and was the co-owner and office manager of Simmons Building Specialties in Alderson from 1954-1996. Frances was a devout member of the Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church in Alderson, where she served the ministry in many capacities. She was a current and past member of the Administrative Board, a member of the Heritage Circle and the United Women in Faith. She was a member of Alderson Main Street, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Woman’s Club of Alderson and was a founding member of the Alderson Quilters Guild. She was also a member of the Alderson Bridge Club, a former 4-H Club Leader and Mother’s Club member. Frances enjoyed English literature, poetry, gardening and canning vegetables. She loved to read mystery novels, watch birds and was a proud Mountaineer fan. She will always be remembered for her kindness, generosity and love of community.
Survivors include three children, Dr. Michael Simmons and his wife, Pamela, of Phoenix, Md., Margaret Lynn "Margy" Simmons of Alderson, and Tom Simmons and his wife, Belinda, of Flat Top, W.Va.; one brother, Sam Tuckwiller of Lewisburg, four grandchildren, Laura Starr and her husband, Connor, of Charlotte, N.C., Brittany Lane and her husband, Joshua, of Princeton, W.Va., Jessica Bulson and her husband, Taylor, of Bluefield, W.Va., and Benjamin Simmons of Beckley, W.Va.; six great-grandchildren, Nobalee Lane, Jocelyn Lane, Isla Lane, Nicholas Bulson, Evelyn Bulson, and Charlotte Starr; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Sunday, March 10, 2024 at 3:30 p.m. at the Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church in Alderson, W.Va., with the Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Kanode and the Rev. Sam Groves officiating. Burial will follow at the Alderson Cemetery, Alderson. Friends may call Sunday, March 10, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church in Alderson, W.Va.

Born December 23, 1933 at Fort Spring, WV, she was the daughter of the late William Arritt and Georgie Mildred Carter Wickline. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Lewis Harold Allen; and one brother, Clyde Milton Wickline.
Mrs. Allen was a homemaker and seamstress having worked at Pence Springs Manufacturing and Kellwood Manufacturing. She attended Ronceverte High School and was a devout member of the Alderson Church of the Nazarene on Muddy Creek Mountain, Alderson. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, and watching game shows on television. Mrs. Allen’s greatest joy was being a homemaker and taking care of her family and friends. She loved babysitting her grandchildren, enjoyed doing special things for her family, and loved to cook for her family and friends, especially Sunday dinners. Mrs. Allen loved her family and will always be remembered for being the devoted mother, grandmother, and natural caregiver that she was.
Survivors include two daughters, Sue Ann Bennett and her husband, Ray, of Alderson, and Mildred "Millie" Tallman and her husband, Kenny, of Alderson; one brother, Tommy Wickline and his wife, Becky, of Beckwith, WV; a sister-in-law, Mary Jane Rudisill of Pence Springs, WV; four grandchildren, Tara Freeman and her husband, Mike, of Alderson, Jason McCallister and his wife, Shawna, of Lewisburg, WV, Lori Bennett of Portland, OR, and Aaron Bennett of Alderson; five great-grandchildren, Autumn Palmer and her husband, Heath, of Rupert, WV, Dylan Carter and his fiancée, Kylie Sams, of Alderson, Gabriel Carter of Alderson, Skyler McCallister of Athens, WV, and Joel McCallister of Lewisburg; one great-great-grandson, Ridge Carter of Alderson; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and neighbors.

Randy Lee Bryant - December 28, 1954 - February 04, 2024

Obituary Preview: Randy Lee Bryant, age 69, of White Sulphur Springs, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at CAMC General Hospital in Charleston following a short illness. He was born December 28, 1954, in Blue Sulphur Springs, a son of the late Howard and Annie M. (Bryant) Cook.
Mr. Bryant attended Smoot Schools. He later went on to work as a food runner in Draper’s café at the Greenbrier Hotel, where he proudly retired after 47 years of service. Randy always enjoyed watching westerns, wrestling, and playing horseshoes. He will be remembered for his love of hunting, fishing, and riding 4-wheelers, but most of all being a loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be truly missed.
Randy is survived by his son, Randy Lee Bryant, Jr., of South Carolina; his daughter, Tacy Dawn Bolen, of Coal City, WV; his two brothers, Arnold Cook of White Sulphur Springs, and Vernon Jay Cook of Blue Sulphur Springs; his four sisters, Dorothy Van Hoye and her husband Bill, of White Sulphur Springs, Wilma Van Hoye of Alderson, Sarah Cook of White Sulphur Springs, and Anita Jones of Mississippi; his four grandchildren, David Bolen, Jeffrey Howerton, Gracie Shuck, and Isaac Bowyer; his two special nieces, Samantha and Amber Van Hoye, and many other loving, nephews, nieces, and cousins.

William Joseph Walkup, Sr. - October 01, 1942 - January 31, 2024

Obituary Preview: William Joseph "Bill" Walkup, Sr., age 81, of Alderson, WV, passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at the Peyton Hospice House in Fairlea, WV, following a long illness.
Born October 7, 1942 in Alderson, he was the son of the late Willie Elmer and Bonnie May Burns Walkup. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, William Joseph "Billy" Walkup, Jr.; one brother, Jeff Walkup; and one sister, Jane Crary.
Mr. Walkup graduated from Alderson High School in 1960. He joined the United States Air Force in 1962 and honorably served his country until he was discharged in 1966. He returned to Alderson and married his wife Rosa, and they raised three children on their farm on Muddy Creek Mountain. Mr. Walkup loved farming and horses and was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Rosa Maria Phillips Walkup of Alderson; two daughters, Donna Bryars of St. Robert, MO, and Bonnie White and her husband, Vince, of White Sulphur Springs, WV; one brother, Bobby Walkup and his wife, Janet, of Alderson; two sisters, Ruth Bragg of Huntington, WV, and Carol Reed and her husband, Gary, of Alderson; six grandchildren, Taylor Bryars, Caleb White (Amy), Jenni Carpenter (Seth), Dylan White, Mandy Quick (Ryan), and Zac Walkup (Bri); 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In keeping with his wishes, Mr. Walkup will be cremated, and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Obituary Preview: Donna Sue Akers, age 71, of Alderson passed away peacefully on Friday, January 5, 2024, at the Petyon Hospice House in Lewisburg. She was born October 14, 1952 in Creamery, a daughter of the late James H. Humphreys and Mary J. (Martin) Cunningham.
Following graduation from high school, she worked as an interior designer for several years. Donna then went on to become self-employed selling houses that she remolded. She was a member of the Old Greenbrier Baptist Church and the Monroe County Animal League. She will be remembered for her love of gardening, planting flowers, and taking care of pets, but most of all spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her son, Ronnie Lee Akers and his wife Joanie, of Alderson; her sisters, Joyce Martin, of Morganton, NC, and Tamara Lowery and her husband Jerry, of Wytheville, VA: as well as several loving cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Carry Akers.
Graveside services will be held Monday, February 5, 2024 at 2:00 pm. at the Akers Family Cemetery in Creamery, with Pastor Anthony Carter officiating.

After graduating from Greenbrier East High School in 1969, she went on to work as a cook at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center and later employed by British United Turkeys (BUTA). Mary enjoyed working and spending time on her family farm with her family.
She is survived by her son, Steven Michael Carter, of Huntington.
In keeping with her wishes, Mary will be cremated.

Born June 24, 1961 in Clifton Forge, Va., he was the son of the late Jack Elwood Willey, Sr., and the late Ruth Mae Graham Willey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Elwood Willey; his sister, Janet Trolian Rakes; and two nephews, Jason Trolian and Paul Richard Honaker.
Mr. Willey was a former carpenter and Master Plumber having worked at H & L Construction Company in Alderson for many years. He attended Talcott High School in Talcott, W.Va., and Hinton High School in Hinton, W.Va. Mr. Willey attended the River of Life Church of God in Alderson. Log home building was his passion. He loved to go fishing, kayaking, and camping. He also loved to travel when his health permitted him to do so. Mr. Willey enjoyed working on a multitude of creative handcrafted projects and loved to spend time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Teresa Lynn Cantley Willey of Alderson, W.Va.; three children, Alana Dawn Blankenship and her husband, James, of Clover, S.C., Alisa Jane Willey-Lule and her husband, Felix, of Forth Worth, Texas, and Jack Elwood Willey, III of Alderson, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren, Brittany Blankenship, SPC Logan Willey, Shyanne Lule, Gabriel Lule, Ryker Lule, Abigayle Lule, Mason Willey, Jacob Willey, Cailyn Willey, Scarlette Willey and Kaiden Willey; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Born May 31, 1993 in Fairlea, WV, he was the son of Clayton Lee Carter of Alderson, WV.
Jon was a community service worker and volunteer at numerous community service organizations in the Wheeling area. He attended James Monroe High School, Ballard Christian School, and New River Community Technical College.
Jon was a bright soul with a huge heart. He brought happiness to those he met. His humor, whit, charm, and charisma were unmatched. Jon loved his family and although he had no children of his own, he adored children and had a special way with them.
Through his youth, Jon was an outstanding athlete. He won many awards in multiple sports while at Ballard Christian School. He was known to be one of the best basketball players in the state, helping those teams win State Championships while winning player of the year awards.
Jon was living in Wheeling at the time of his death, and he enjoyed his life there. His work in the community gave him purpose and his heartfelt love touched so many people. Jon had such a heart for the hurting, forgotten, and the unwanted. He loved cooking, listening to music, star gazing, studying psychology, his sunglasses, and hanging out with his friends.
Jon was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Noah Ivan Carter; his paternal grandmother, Delorise Annestine Vance Carter; and his aunt, Frances Arminta Hanna.
Survivors include his father, Clayton Lee Carter and his companion, Brittany, of Alderson; one brother, Payton Carter of Columbus, MS; two sisters, Alexa Preston (Lucas), of Secondcreek, WV, and Casey Pond of Texas; one aunt, Tracy Carter of White Sulphur Springs, WV; five nieces and nephews, Tanner, Carly, Diana, Campbell, and Ebbitt; and many loving Cousins.

Obituary Preview: Mary Ellen Christian Reese, age 88, of Alderson, W.Va., passed away on Sunday, October 22, 2023 at the Peyton Hospice House in Fairlea, W.Va., following a sudden illness.
Born September 4, 1935 in Beckley, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late French Russell and Hallie Ardene Shanklin Christian. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edward Reese, Sr.; a daughter, Barbara Brooks; a grandson, Mitchell Lee Phillips; a sister, Helen Wedge; and two brothers, Lawrence Christian and Charles Christian.
Mrs. Reese was a homemaker, a 1952 graduate of Alderson High School in Alderson, and was a volunteer at the Alderson Senior Citizens Center. She was a member of the Alderson Chapter No. 119 Order of the Eastern Star and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Tri County Memorial VFW Post 6723, Alderson. Mrs. Reese enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren and loved her dog Niko.
Survivors include a son, Charles Edward "Chip" Reese, Jr. of Alderson; three daughters, Chrissy Harris and her husband, Roger, of Alderson, Donna Martin of Lewisburg, and Nancy Smith and her companion, George, of Alderson; one brother, Jerry Gable of Peru, Ind.; one sister, Mary Dingman of Shelbyville, Ind.; nine grandchildren, David Brooks, Aaron Brooks, Michelle Hill and her husband, Jason, Charles Phillips and his wife, Dana, Amy Smith, Jason Smith, Keri Crane, and her husband, Denny, Stacy Shires and her companion, Joey, and Stephen Reese McLaughlin; 20 great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; special family friend that was like a son, Pat Standard; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be Thursday, October 26, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel in Alderson with Joe Baker officiating. Burial will follow at the Fletcher Addition of the Alderson Cemetery in Alderson. Friends may call Wednesday, October 25, 2023 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson.
Family will serve as pallbearers.

He was a 1976 graduate of Lakota High School in West Chester, OH. Greg went on to work as a truck driver for many years until his health declined. Greg will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, outdoor activities, and rebuilding classic cars. But most of all he enjoyed spending time with his daughter Michelle and his family.
He is survived by his brother, Michael Darrell Farley and his wife Lynda, of Beaver, WV; his nephew, Justin Darrell Farley and his wife Allie, of New York; his aunt, Helen Hilton, of Alderson; as well as many loving cousins.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter Michelle Farley, his uncles, Junior Farley and Verl Farley, and his aunts, Patty Minnick and Shirley Allen.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Elbert Cantley; a grandson, Chris Willey; a brother, Roy Bowden, and three sisters, Annie Canterbury, Nannie Kounse, and Mary Ellen Jones.
Mrs. Cantley was a homemaker. She was a member of the Clayton Baptist Church at Clayton and attended the Pence Springs Community Church at Pence Springs. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, shopping, entertaining and social gatherings but above all, she loved to spend time with her family and friends.
Survivors include a son, George Elbert Cantley of Clayton; a daughter, Teresa Lynn Willey and her husband, Jack E. Willey, Jr., of Alderson, W.Va.; three sisters, Oassie Canterbury of Pence Springs, W.Va., Virginia Cantley of Forest Hill, W.Va., and Dorothy LeMaster and her husband, Don, of Russell, Ky.; six grandchildren, Alana Blankenship and her husband, James, of Clover, S.C., Alisa Lule and her husband, Felix, of Fort Worth, Texas, Heather Cantley of Lindside, W.Va., Jack Willey of Alderson, Amy Cantley of Alta, W.Va., and John Adam Cantley of Alta; 11 great-grandchildren, Brittany Blankenship, Logan Willey, Mason Willey, Jacob Willey, Cailyn Willey, Gabriel Lule, Ryker Lule, Abigayle Lule, Scarlette Willey, Jaylee Cantley, and Kaiden Willey; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

After graduating Alderson High School in 1959. She went on to work for the WV Dailey News and Hinton Newspaper as a news journalist. Joyce was a devout member of the Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church, where she played the organ and directed the choir. She was a member of the Alderson Women’s Club and enjoyed being involved in the community.
Joyce will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her favorite things included sewing, crocheting, baking, and playing the piano, and she taught private piano lessons as well.

Born February 9, 1941 at Meadow Bridge, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Herbert Wilson and Willie Snow Bragg Adkins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Franklin Kirby, Sr.; a son, Jesse Kirby; a brother, Luther Adkins; and a sister, Sadie Adkins.
Mrs. Kirby was a retired certified nursing assistant having worked at Summers County Continuous Care at Hilldale, W.Va. She was also the co-owner and operator of several businesses in Alderson over the years. She attended the Bellview School at Wolf Creek, W.Va. and was a member of the Broad Run Baptist Church at Wolf Creek. Mrs. Kirby enjoyed bowling, playing cards, reading, and coloring, but above all, she loved to spend time with her family. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Survivors include one son, James Franklin Kirby, Jr. and his wife, Candi, of Alderson; two daughters, Bertha Erma Mann of Pickaway, and Barbara Ellen Persinger and her husband, Jack, of Sinks Grove, W.Va.; two brothers, Raymond E. Adkins and his wife, Ann, of Liberty, Mo., and James J. Adkins and his wife, Myrna, of Alderson; six grandchildren, Misty Kirby, Jamie Barb, Briton Kirby, Chase Kirby, Paige Persinger, and Jessica Carver; nine great-grandchildren, Cheyenne Barb, Cherokee Barb, Chevelle Barb, Lucious Barb, Jasper Persinger, Amilah Carver, Bradley Carver, Ciara Harmon, and Brianna Deskins; and several nieces and nephews.

Born May 5, 1967, in Clifton, Va., he was the son of the late Lyle “Coco” Highlander and Betty Smithson Highlander.
Mr. Highlander grew up as a member of the Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church in Alderson, W.Va. In school, he ran track and played on the basketball and baseball teams. Mr. Highlander graduated from Greenbrier East High School in 1985 and later graduated from West Virginia University in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. He worked as a Sales Manager with Schwan’s Company for many years. He was an avid fan of the West Virginia Mountaineers Sports teams. Mr. Highlander also enjoyed spending time at the softball fields watching his daughter play, running, painting, and being with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Maria Ortiz Highlander of Williamson, Ga.; three daughters, Yldamarie Turner and her husband, Daniel, of Locust Grove, Ga. and Elizabeth Highlander and Addison Highlander of Williamson, Ga.; granddaughters, Evelyn Turner and Elaine Turner of Locust Grove, Ga.; brother, Jeffrey Highlander of Alderson, W.Va.; mother, Betty Smithson Highlander of Alderson, W.Va.; several cousins; and several nieces and one nephew.

Born March 17, 1939, in Baileysville, he was the son of the late William and Elsie Short Lester. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Inez Sue Lester; his brothers, Luther Lester, Fred Lester, Billy Lester, Pete Lester, and Rodney Lester; his sister, Cleta Halsey, Mildred Toler, and Macy Kusewicz. Roger was a graduate of Baileysville High School. After earning a degree from Concord College, he returned to Baileysville High School to teach and coach basketball and football for many years. Roger and his wife Sue, relocated to Clayton, where he continued to teach and coach at Alderson Jr. High and Lewisburg Jr. High. His love of sports kept him busy. He was active in the community where he coached little league teams. He and Sue became affectionately known in the community as “Nanny” and “Pappy.”
Roger is survived by his children, Vickey Blankenship and her husband Darren, of Beckley, Jeannine Utterback and her husband Jamie, of Alderson, Dale Lester and his Wife Tracy, of Fayetteville; his four grandchildren, Rebekah Ramboldt, and her husband Todd, of Ronceverte, Colten Blankenship and his wife Danielle, of Lexington, KY, Heath Utterback and Savannah Keffer, of Clayton, and Evan Lester, of Fayetteville; his five great grandchildren, Slayton Utterback, Perri Ramboldt, Gus Ramboldt, Greer Blankenship, and Caden Blankenship, and his loving sister Jean Rose and her husband Ronald, of Tamarac, Florida, as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was born August 25, 1944, in Baltimore, MD, a daughter of the late Otto Jaakob Suokas and Toini Aili (Juvonen) Suokas.
After graduating from Lake Worth High School in 1962, she went on to work for Mckesson & Robbins Pharmaceuticals and LabCorp as a courier. She also enjoyed driving part-time for a Finnish Taxi service in the Lake Worth, Florida area. In 2008, Toini moved to Alderson. She worked at the Riverside – Alderson Exxon deli, she met a lot of friends and enjoyed talking to and seeing people day-to-day.
Toini was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Old Greenbrier Baptist Church in Alderson. She always enjoyed spending time with her mother traveling to visit in Finland, where she had dual citizenship. Her favorite things included reading, listening to music, evening drives looking for deer, and driving throughout West Virginia because the beautiful scenery reminded her of Finland.
She is survived by her close friends, Sylvia Jean Keaton, and Charla Fisher, both of Alderson.

After graduating from Alderson High School in 1968, Jenny attended Little French Beauty Academy where she received her A.A.S in Cosmetology. She attended Bluefield State College and received her BA in education. Later receiving her Master of Arts in Education at Virginia Tech. She went on to teach and work in the Cosmetology field in all capacities for forty years until her retirement, she was a member of Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church. Jenny also served on the Virginia State Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists and was a proud volunteer of the Kentucky/West Virginia Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. She will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and teaching, but most of all spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her son Richard Arbaugh, of Naples, Florida; her two daughters, Beth Massey and her Husband Joe, of Alderson, and Jennifer Mason and her husband Dana, of Lewisburg, Scott Keadle and his wife Kathy, of Louisville, Kentucky her granddaughter Bella Arbaugh, of Naples, Florida; her grandsons Jacob Massey, of Alderson, Alex Massey, of Fort Bragg North Carolina, Jack Keadle and his wife Lizzie, of Smiths Grove, Kentucky, and Emerson and Dana Scott Mason II, of Lewisburg; granddaughters Kati Massey and her companion Russ, of Roanoke, Virginia, Liza Keadle, of Louisville, Kentucky; her great grandson, Afton Keadle, of Kentucky and her sister-in-law, Jacqueline Bennett, of Lewisburg, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Thursday, March 16, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel in Alderson, with Pastor Eddie Harris officiating. Burial will follow in the Campground Cemetery, at Creamery. Friends may call Thursday, March 16, 2023 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Lobban Funeral Home in Alderson.

Obituary Preview: Luther Darrell Farley, age 93, of Alderson passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at the Glasgow Health and Rehabilitation Center in Glasgow, WV. He was born January 9, 1930, in Coal City, WV, the son of the late George Dewey Farley and Lessie Cannandy Farley.
After graduating Stoco High School in 1949, Luther went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Maires Corps during the Korean conflict. He worked for McLean Trucking until his retirement. He was a member of the Sharonville, Ohio Masonic Lodge 204 F & AM, and a 32∘ Beni Kedem Shine. Luther enjoyed traveling, camping, watching sporting events, especially the NFL. His favorite things included attending military functions and his Marie Corps reunions. But most of all enjoying time with his family over the holidays.
He is survived by his sons, Michael Darrell Farley and his wife Lynda, of Beaver, and Gregory Keith Farley, of Alderson; his grandson, Justin Darrell Farley and his wife Allie, of New York; his sister, Helen Hilton, of Alderson; and many loving nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his granddaughter Michelle Farley; his brothers, Junior Farley and Verl Farley; his sisters, Patty Minnick and Shirley Allen.
In keeping with his wishes, Luther will be cremated and Lobban Funeral Home is honored to be assisting the family with the arrangements.
